This document summarizes a study that explored the motivations of volunteers involved in nature conservation projects in Lincolnshire, UK. The study found that volunteers' primary motivation was interest in environmental protection. It also found that local conservation activities addressed themes of sustainable development better than local policies. The study concludes that involving volunteers in local policymaking could help inform policies with local knowledge, complementing expert knowledge and leading to more effective nature conservation policies that translate to local action.

Introduction
The tremendous increase in the scale of human impact on earth together with our increased although imperfect understanding of ecological processes means that the environment can no longer viewed as a relatively stable background factor. Rather the interaction between economic development and complex and often fragile ecosystems on which that development depends has become a major political issue both locally and globally (Maigua & Musyimi, n.d.).
It is no longer possible to treat ecology and politics as separate spheres. The institutions that matter most are no longer specifically environmental but rather are the core institutions that govern or at least seek to govern the workings of the world politics and economy. A major focus is actually the integration of environmental concerns into the sphere of economic planning and policy making rather than the development of an entirely separate thus peripheral sphere (Maigua & Musyimi, n.d.).
This study therefore aims to make a critical analysis of some important aspects regarding the political ecology of environmental management. Political ecology informs political makers and organizations about the complexities surrounding environment and development thereby contributing to better environmental governance. It helps understand the decisions that communities make about the natural environment in the context of their political environment, economic pressures and societal regulations. Political ecology also looks at how unequal relations in and among societies affects the environment especially in the context of government policy (Grieber, 2009).
The study therefore at various political aspects and their influence on environmental management. Firstly it looks at the issue of environmental democracy and how it influences environmental management. This includes the aspects of participation, environmental justice and information access. It then elaborates environmental governance including global environmental governance and implications on environmental management.
The study then looks at other political aspects of relevance to environmental management including: the global commons, geopolitics, environmental movements and the conduct of politicians. It then looks at trends in the political ecology of Africa and then Kenya specifically. Policy making and how it influences environmental management is then explained. The study then winds up with a review of. The legal and policy frameworks for environmental management in Kenya.

The occurrence of natural disasters is currently one of the major developmental challenges that the world is facing. The Society for National Integration through Rural Development (SNIRD), an NGO working with the fisherfolk communities in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, has long been working towards reducing community vulnerability and strengthening coping mechanisms. As there were no preparedness measures among the communities, the impact of the disaster was worsened, often destroying their livelihood support mechanisms. Hence SNIRD initiated a project to organize the community and imparted trainings towards disaster coping mechanisms. The project followed a community-based strategy, making use of Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) techniques by involving the community. This paper deals with the techniques of vulnerability assessment by involving the community and in preparing alternate livelihood income plan towards disaster preparedness and management. The project was evaluated using an amended version of the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) and found that the project was able to sufficiently increase their alternative livelihood mechanisms and therewith comprehensively and sustainable decrease community vulnerability to natural disasters.

The 2016 ProSPER.Net Leadership Programme was held in Labuan Island and Beaufort, Sabah, Malaysia. The Programme included workshops, plenary sessions, and fieldwork around the topics of local sustainable development challenges in the region. The main goals of the Programme were to identify local leadership opportunities for sustainable development and to link local and national sustainable development projects to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Climate Treaty, and the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction.
From 27-29 October 2014, WLE, in cooperation with the CGIAR Systemwide Program on Collective Action and Property Rights (CAPRI) and the CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees, and Agroforestry (FTA), held a workshop on Institutions for Ecosystems Services in Washington DC.
The goals of the workshop were to:
-Encourage sharing and discussion on research methods and tools to study the links between institutions and ecosystem services
-Synthesize lessons about institutional arrangements needed to ensure that ecosystem services projects are able to deliver benefits to local resource users and produce local, regional, and national global environmental benefits
-Identify policies and program interventions that can strengthen these institutions
-Outline priorities for future research, policy, and project implementation, particularly of relevance for PIM, WLE, and FTA programs

Attitudes and behaviours of caring for the environment are the willingness arising from internal
encouragement to express actions to care about the environment, to improve or maintain the quality of the
environment. The purpose of this research is to see the dominant factor that influences the attitudes and behaviours of
caring for the environment in the community who live in the tourist area. Research is in the Bili-Bili Dam Tourism Area,
South Sulawesi Province. The number of samples in this study was 100 respondents. The survey method in this study
conducted by in-depth interviews and through questionnaires to respondents. The sampling technique used is to use
purposive sampling. Processing questionnaires obtained from respondents then proceed with data analysis with
confirmatory analysis or often referred to as Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) with IBM AMOS Program. The results
showed that attitudes and behaviours in environmental care would increase if there is direct involvement of the
community in tourism management in the region. The existence of a sense of belonging will lead to attitudes and
behaviours to guard the tourist area. Factors that are encouraging attitudes and behaviours to care for the
environment by the surrounding community will have a direct impact on the sustainability of the region and the
environment.

Protected Area Conservation Measures and Practices of Community The Case of B...ijtsrd
Biri LAROSA Protected Landscape and Seascape BLPLS is a marine protected area in the Province of Northern Samar and is one of the countrys protected areas facing biological degradation because of human exploitation. Thus, this study assessed conservation programs implementation and community awareness to propose a policy redirection. Using qualitative descriptive research design, data revealed that BLPLS spans 33,492 hectares encapsulating 36 barangays with 18 known implemented conservation programs. The conservation programs investigated in this study covered ecological, economic, social, and cultural functions that aimed to benefit communities. Notably, the programs were well planned, but the problem was generally on the implementation. Some of the conservation programs succeeded because of strong legal basis and proper execution, forged partnership and linkages, prioritization, constant program monitoring and evaluation, and research based decisions, while other programs failed due to lack of commitment, lack of political will, lot of inconsistencies, Filipino negative traits, implementer’s incompetence, lenient monitoring and evaluation, political intrusion, lack coordination, and people’s passive and inadequate knowledge. Therefore, it is certain that successful conservation programs are advantageous to the integrity of the protected area, while failure poses a risk of increased vulnerability to degradation. Ergo, all successful programs must redound for the benefit of both BLPLS and the community people as it champions BLPLS’s ecological integrity. Thus, there researchers highly recommended that various agencies connected with the protected area may imposed a stringent and harmonized implementation of conservation policies, institutional reform, strengthen the capacity of the implementers, community empowerment, creation of reward system, context based environmental education, institutionalization of program impact, and evaluation studies, and data based decision making for program development and plan of BLPLS. Climate change and the provision of biodiversity in public temperate forests
– A mechanism design approach for the implementation of biodiversity
conservation policies

The provision of forest biodiversity remains a major challenge in the management of forest resources.
Biodiversity is mostly considered a public good and the fact that societal benefits from biodiversity are private
information, hinders its supply at adequate levels. Here we investigate how the government, as a forest owner,
may increase the biodiversity supply in publicly-owned forests. We employ a mechanism design approach to find
the biodiversity provision choices, which take into account agents’ strategic behavior and values towards bio-
diversity. We applied our framework to a forest landscape in Southwestern Germany, using forest birds as
biodiversity indicators and evaluating the impacts of climate change on forest dynamics and on the costs of
biodiversity provision. Our results show that climate change has important implications to the opportunity cost
of biodiversity and the provision levels (ranging from 10 to 12.5% increase of the bird indicator abundance). In
general, biodiversity valuations needed to surpass the opportunity cost by more than 18% to cope with the
private information held by the agents. Moreover, higher costs under more intense climate change (e.g.
Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5) reduced the attainable bird abundance increase from 12.5 to 10%.
We conclude that mechanism design may provide key information for planning conservation policies and
identify conditions for a successful implementation of biodiversity-oriented forest management.
1. Introduction
The provision of biodiversity remains a major challenge in the
management of forest resources. Biodiversity has been continuously
declining worldwide during the past decades, despite its recognized
importance to human well-being, ecosystem functioning and ecosystem
resistance and resilience under climate change (Díaz et al., 2006; Isbell
et al., 2015; Tilman et al., 2014). A main constraint to the im-
plementation of biodiversity conservation strategies is the fact that
biodiversity is mostly considered a public good, and in the absence of
markets or policy mechanisms to promote its provision, there are in-

The United Nations Environmental Protection (UNEP) has core values that guide its strategic planning and decisions. They are; respect for diversity, professionalism, and integrity. They should be practiced and upheld by every individual working for or allied to the organization as means of fostering the organization’s culture. Respect for diversity means that the organization is committed to upholding diversity in all areas including human diversity such as treating men and women equally. Integrity means that the organization’s decisions and acts are carried out in a manner which is for the common good and not for personal gain (Ivanova, 2010). Professionalism entails demonstrating professional competence as well as mastery of subject matter when implementing strategic decisions.
The core values are aligned with advocacy, leadership, and social change. UNEP professionally advocates for various methods that ensure the environment is not exposed to harm by humans. For instance, it recommends ways through which carbon emissions by automobiles can be reduced. More so, it researches and presents findings on climate change and global warming. For instance, its 2017 report indicated that the emission gap could not be closed by 2030 as predicted (The Emissions Gap Report 2017, 2017). Essentially, the organization has been advocating for most effective strategies that can be implemented in curbing climate change and global warming while also evaluating whether laid measures are giving promising results.
The core values are aligned with leadership as the organization serves as the role model that other organizations and people want to follow. More so, UNEP has been leading the way while showing courage through taking the unpopular stands to realize change and improvement. Further, UNEP has been proactive in developing leadership strategies that help translate vision into results through partnering with other bodies and agencies. Essentially, the organization has shown leadership in the way it relates with other internal and external parties.
UNEP has also aligned its core values with social change. It is a major organization that has promoted measures against climate change. For instance, the organization has been offering civic education on bioenergy sources which have been proven more effective and less harmful on the environment. Assessment of Solid Waste Management among Households in Kaptembwa Location i...paperpublications3
Abstract: Solid waste disposal remains one of the major challenges of urbanization in developed and developing countries. The sanitary state of an area, particularly the sub-urban areas is influenced by waste handling practices by the residents and the measures put in place for safe waste collection and disposal. The objective of this study was to assess disposal mechanisms of solid waste among households in Kaptembwa location in Nakuru West Sub-County. The research adopted social inquiry design where a structured questionnaire was administered to household heads, oral interviews and focus group discussions were also conducted. The unit of analysis was the household selected in four estates. The study population was 400 households and a sample size of 200 households. The selection of the household units for data collection was based on simple random sampling. The data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) computer software (version 17) and results presented by descriptive statistics (graphs and tables). Inferential statistics was also used to show the relationships between independent and dependent variables. The findings and recommendations of this study provide information not only to the Kaptembwa residents but also residents living in low income of urban and peri-urban areas to adopt best practices in solid waste management to improve environmental quality and enhance the health status by reducing the incidence of disease outbreaks. This can be achieved by the implementation of some key research recommendations which includes use of smart shopping to avoid the excess use of polythene bags, proper sorting and storage of waste, using improvised storage receptacles such as disposable cartons and dust bins as well as engaging the Community Based Organization (CBO) dealing with waste collection, transportation and disposal.

Abstract
Nature conservation at a local level is characterised by
high involvement from volunteers. Meanwhile, the
recognition of their potential and capability to use local
knowledge to inform nature conservation policies and
actions is lacking. In this paper we explore their
motivations for participation in nature conservation
activities and compare these against the goals of policy
initiatives that support local projects. Using four case
studies, we apply a neo-endogenous development
framework and the principles of sustainable
development (SD) to demonstrate the capabilities
for local communities to manage their natural
resources. The study suggests that a better
understanding of the motivations of volunteers in
nature conservation and the creation of
opportunities for them to participate in local policy
making would positively influence local planing
policies.
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE AND POLICY MAKING
Not until recent decades have biodiversity and nature
conservation as well as the sustainable use of natural
resources been a major concern globally. This has been
prompted by overwhelming evidence of biodiversity loss
(Biodiversity 2020, 2011, p4). Meanwhile, planning and
management of natural resources has been largely
dominated by a top-down approach, which is mainly
driven by expert knowledge and is autocratic (Brown,
2003). This has seen local knowledge about nature
conservation being undervalued in policy making, yet local
communities have a potential to bring about local
knowledge on ecosystems and management practices that
can be utilised to inform nature conservation policies and
actions (Brown, 2003;Campbell, 2003; Gadgil eta l., 2003;
Berkes, 2007; Kass et al., 2011 and Fetene et al., 2012).
A paradigm shift is therefore required to ‘unlock’ the
potential of community-led nature conservation to inform
nature conservation policies. Involving local communities
in decision making on nature conservation has therefore
become a condition for environmental management to be
effective (Mendez-Contreras et al., 2008).
Using cases of best practice in nature conservation, this
study is aimed at understanding community-led voluntary
nature conservation projects in Lincolnshire as well as
motivations for the volunteers to participate in these
projects. The aim is to investigate how these voluntary
community-led nature conservation activities can be
utilised to inform nature conservation policies and actions
locally, and in the United Kingdom.
This study draws from the neo-endogenous theory of rural
development and the sustainable development concept.
One of the sources that the neo-endogenous theory draws
from is the argument about rural sustainability which is
perceived to be people-centred, initiated and driven by
local people (Lowe et al., 1995, p91)

whilst recognising and utilising extra-local factors to
the advantage of the local community (Ray, 2006). It
charactererises the concept of sustainable
development as one that aims at bringing together
economic development and environmental
conservation. Sustainable development also
advocates for viable localities and communities that
can maintain the environmental and economic
activities.
RESEARCH APPROACH AND METHODS
Nature conservation policy documents at local,
national and regional level were evaluated in relation
to sustainability and some weaknesses were identified
in addressing the themes of sustainable development.
These included failure of the Habitat Directive and the
Birds Directive to explicitly address the theme on
intra and inter-generational equity to natural
resources.
Four best practices in community-led voluntary nature
conservation cases were then studied in the
Lincolnshire. These were Stamford Community
Orchard group, Nettleham Woodland Trust (NWT),
Friends of Bourne Wood and Green Synergy. A total
24 interviews (one-on-one and semi-structured) were
conducted with the nature conservation groups,
followed by two participant observation exercises
which were conducted for each case study to gain an
in-depth understanding of the group activities, their
relevance to the goals of sustainable development
and the participants’ motivations for taking part in
nature conservation. A thematic analysis approach
was used to analyse the data collected.
This was followed by conducting semi-structured,
one-on-one interviews with five local planning policy
practitioners and three key stakeholders for local
planning policy to establish their views on the extent
to which the concept of sustainable development is
utilised in local policy making. The findings on a local
approach to nature conservation and sustainable
development as well as motivations for volunteering
to take part in nature conservation by local
communities were shared with them and they were
asked to comment on the implications of the findings
to local policy making.
FINDINGS
The figure below gives a summary of the findings on
motivations of local communities to participate in
community-led voluntary nature conservation
projects.

From the figure, it can be observed that, interest in the
environment scored highest in the most important
category, followed by heritage and tradition, interest in
gardening and community development respectively. The
results suggest that interest in environmental protection is
the main motivation to participate in voluntary nature
conservation, as confirmed by the following examples of
quotes obtained during the interviews;
’I put interest in environmental protection first as I believe
that unless we protect the wider environment then we risk
losing everything, everything has a place in the world and
we have done so much to destroy it over the years we
now need to put something back’ (Volunteer 3, NWT)
‘I think the environment is very important, we have all
these wild animals, they need somewhere to hibernate
and we need to get wildlife, like butterflies, bees and
wasps and all of the insects to come, just to get them to
pollinate things and to make this planet worth living on
and better’ (Volunteer 2, Green Synergy)
Also established by the study is that, the motivations of
the volunteers change over time, for example one of the
interviewees said; ‘Almost ten years ago my motivation
was that the village needs more trees. I suppose that back
then it was simply the idea of wanting to add a few
trees around the village of Nettleham…..,ten years on, we
have had four significant projects. So why put
environmental protection at the top of the list? Now our
main priority is to protect the woodlands so that the
present and the future genarations can enjoy them’

Moreover, the study also suggests that, using a local
approach to sustainable development, through nature
conservation activities, the voluntary groups are
addressing themes of sustainable development, with key
themes such as, prudent use, intra and inter-generational
equity, long term view, integration of the social,
environmental and economic pillar and quality of life being
adequately addressed through their activities.
Meanwhile, the interviews with the policy practitioners and
the key stakeholders confirm that the themes of
sustainable development have not been adequately
addressed in local policy making. They focus mainly on the
integration of SD pillars which policy-makers perceive to
be inadequately addressed and feel that the environment
is given very little attention compared to the economic and
social pillars. The environment has been considered as a
constraint. Therefore a more balanced overall view is
required, as the environment needs to be better
recognised in plan making (Stakeholder 1, Greater
Lincolnshire Nature Partnership, GLNP)
Moreover, there is a consensus that; if a policy
makers understood local people’s motivations, they
would incorporate local knowledge (Stakeholder1,
GLNP) and local views (Stakeholder 2, Natural
England) in the local plans and the plans will be more
accepted by the people if they take part in developing
them (Stakeholder1, GLNP) and (Stakeholder 2,
Natural England).
IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS
The study reveals that, most volunteers were not
aware of any policy goals, however they expressed
willingness to participate in local policy making. This
calls for effective
dialogue between local communities and the policy
practitioners, as well as the creation of opportunities
for local communities to participate more fully in
policy making. As revealed by this study, the NWT
case study is actively involved in making the
neighbourhood plans for the Nettleham village,
providing evidence on environmental issues to inform
the neighbourhood plans, which will feed into the
Central Lincolnshire Local Plan (CLLP). Their
involvement was through networking and building
relations with the Parish councillors. However, this
study has not established whether the provisions of
Neighbourhood Plans are effectively incorporated into
the CLLP.
We therefore concludes that the involvement of
voluntary nature groups in local plan making would
see their local knowledge on nature conservation and
the lessons learnt from their local approach to
sustainable development being utilised to inform local
policies, thereby complementing expert knowledge.
This will result in effective policies that can translate
into local action.
