Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who led the first voyage around the world from 1519 to 1522 for Spain and discovered the strait that now bears his name, but was killed in the Philippines. Christopher Columbus was born in Italy but sailed for Spain, discovering the Americas and establishing the first European settlement in the Caribbean, making multiple voyages across the Atlantic.
