5. WHAT IS SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT?
Supply chain management in not only a process served to generate
a cost reduction in the budget or a mission to create greater
operational efficiencies within an organization. While these are a
part of the whole ecosystem, modern supply change management
encompasses the strategic alignment of end-to-end business
processes to realize market and economic value, as well as giving a
firm the competitive advantage over their business rivals.
In recent times, the dawn of the digital age has brought wholesale
transformation to the world of commerce. Only twenty years ago,
these processes were arduous, labor intensive, time consuming and
disorganized. It now may seem like ancient history, delivery times
have gone from two weeks to a month down to a turnaround of
hours in some cases. Automated systems and high-speed
communication have paved the way for supply chain management
and its increased demand

WHY IS SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT SO IMPORTANT?
SUPPLY CHAIN STRATEGY
In 2014, a survey by Tompkins Consortium delivered a shocking
revelation. Of the business leaders participating in that survey,
more than 50% considered supply chain to be a standalone
business operating function. In other words, the majority did not
recognize the need for close alignment between supply chain and
general business strategies.
Now let’s rewind to the earliest paragraphs in this post, and the
statistic relating to supply chain performance and revenue growth:
If your company hasn’t focused much attention on supply chain
strategy, now is the time to start, even if it means enlisting some
external help to do so. A properly designed supply chain strategy
is an enabler for achieving commercial goals and consequently,
corporate success. What does “properly designed” mean? It means
that your supply chain strategy should support the overall
strategy of your business. In far too many organizations, this is
unfortunately not the case.
Remember, poor
strategic
management is a
factor in 44% of
Australian
business failures.
Given the other statistics we’ve
looked at so far, it’s fair to include
poor supply chain strategy along
with general strategic management
in the figure above. So if you want
to be sure of business success,
review your supply chain strategy.
If it doesn’t align with the objectives
of your business, you have some
work to do.
7. .
IMPROVE CUSTOMER SERVICES
Today, more than ever before, supply chain management has
become an integral part of business and is essential to any
company’s success and customer satisfaction. Supply chain
management has the power to boost customer service, reduce
operating costs and improve the financial standing of a company,
but how does this work?
Customers expect to receive the correct product
mix and quantity to be delivered on time. For
example, if you buy five books from Amazon and
only two of the actual titles arrive, one is an entirely
different book and two are missing, the customer
will lose faith in Amazon, prompting them to leave a
bad review and hinder them from returning to the
platform.
Products need to be on hand in the right location.
Customer satisfaction is tarnished if your car’s brake
pads fail and the auto repair shop is delayed in
making the repairs because parts are not available
in-house.
Follow up support after a sale must be done
quickly. When an appliance store sells a furnace
with a warranty and it breaks down when
temperatures are below freezing, it is a great
possibility the customer will be irate if the heating
unit cannot be fixed immediately.
8. REDUCE OPERATING COSTS
Decreases Purchasing Cost: Retailers depend
on supply chains to quickly distribute costly
products to avoid sitting on expensive
inventories.
Decrease Production Cost: Any delay in
production can cost a company tens of
thousands of dollars. This factor makes supply
chain management ever more important.
Reliable delivery of materials to assembly
plants avoids any costly delays in
manufacturing.
Decrease Total Supply Chain Cost: Wholesale
manufacturers and retailer suppliers depend on
proficient supply chain management to design
a network that meets customer service goals.
This gives businesses a competitive edge in the
marketplace.
IMPROVE FINANCIAL POSITION
Insert Profit Leverage - Businesses value supply
chain managers because they help control and
decrease supply chain expenditures.
Decrease Fixed Assets - Supply chain managers
decrease the use of large fixed assets such as plants,
warehouses and transportation vehicles, essentially
diminishing cost.
Increases Cash Flow - Firms appreciate the added
value supply chain management contributes to the
speed of product flows to customers.
9. WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH A PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION
ON SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT?
Globally Professional Certification with latest
curriculum with interaction with industry
leaders is of high demand rather than Academic
Degrees for implementing it at practical field.
Supply Chain Function is one of the major
functions in local corporate and MNC business in
Bangladesh. Others are basically its sub function
such as HR, IT, even Engineering etc. Therefore,
Supply Chain Education should be one of major
focused area of interest in all university which is
rarely found practically.
ISCEA (International Supply Chain Education Alliance) designs the
curriculum for Supply Chain Education to provide students with a
fundamental understanding of company supply chain management from a
global perspective, with an emphasis on leveraging the effects on business
performance and objectives.
The CSCA (Certified Supply Chain Analyst) and
CSCM (Certified Supply Chain Manager) are
two major programs run for junior & senior
level respectively that is committed to prepare
supply chain leaders who will be able to work
in local & international organizations around
the world. It aims for a high level of integration
between professional leaders and the
enthusiastic students so that they control &
innovate with emphasis on the strategic
decision-making and international supply chain
management across borders. Basically skill and
expertise are two different terms in practical
world.
Academics are liable for raising skilled manpower through typical
education system whereas expertise can be grown up with the future
leaders through interaction and case studies of the supply chain leaders who
lead these two courses in Bangladesh along with latest curriculum of ISCEA
which the conglomerates around the world is looking for beyond going
through typical jargons only. These who chose to earn CSCA & CSCM are
pursuing management or consulting positions in Bangladesh along with
global positions around the world in supply chain management, operations
management, manufacturing, purchasing, or related fields.

11. WHAT IS SUPPLY CHAIN?
A supply chain is a network between a company
and its suppliers to produce and distribute a specific
product to the final buyer.
This network includes different activities, people,
entities, information, and resources.
The supply chain also represents the steps it takes
to get the product or service from their original state
to the customer.
WHY IS SUPPLY CHAIN IMPORTANT?
Supply chains are developed by companies so they can
reduce their costs and remain competitive in the business
landscape.
WHAT IS SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT (SCM)?
• Supply chain management is the management of
the flow of goods and services and includes all
processes that transform raw materials into final
products.
• Involves active streamlining of a business's supply-
side activities to maximize customer value and gain a
competitive advantage in the marketplace.
• SCM represents an effort by suppliers to develop
and implement supply chains that are as efficient and
economical as possible.

12. WHAT ARE SUPPLY CHAIN STRATEGIES?
A supply chain strategy determines the nature of
procurement of raw materials, transportation of materials
to and from the company, manufacture of the product or
operation to provide the service, and distribution of the
product to the customer, along with any follow-up service
and a specification of whether these processes will be
performed in-house or outsourced.
13. PROCESS VIEW OF SUPPLY CHAIN:
There are two different ways to view the processes performed
in a supply chain.
1. Cycle View
The processes in a supply chain are divided into a series of
cycles, each performed at the interface between two successive
stages of a supply chain.
2. Push/Pull View:
Pull processes are initiated in response to a customer order,
whereas push processes are initiated and performed in
anticipation of customer orders.
CYCLE VIEW
All supply chain processes can be broken down into four process cycles:
1. Customer order cycle
2. Replenishment cycle
3. Manufacturing cycle
4. Procurement cycle
Each cycle occurs at the interface between two successive stages of the
supply chain.
14. PUSH/PULL VIEW
Examples:
• One of the pull supply chain examples is the direct
computer seller that waits until it receives an order to
actually build a custom computer for the consumer.
• A company choosing to stockpile finished product at its
distribution centers to wait for orders that pull them to
stores.

17. SUPPLY CHAIN: WHAT IS THAT BUZZING
WORD?
Simply, it's an accumulation of all processes that concerns
about providing a product or service to it's customers,
either it could be marketing, operations, distribution,
finance or even customer service. In any company, three
elements flow through the veins of its formation:
information, product and funds. It starts with information
of demand, then company manages the chain for
sustainable production and eventually through the sales,
funds is generated and distributed among the
stakeholders.
To be frank, the underlying goal of any
business is to make money. And here is
the supply chain that maximizes the
overall value generated. To obtain that
utmost goal, company supply chain may
adopt several frameworks, purchasing
patters, material requirement planning,
team dynamics and so forth.

18. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT TO STUDY SUPPLY
CHAIN?
It was once said that 'Sales' is the core portion of an
organization, even it was said that 'branding' section does
the core. But in modern time the situation has completely
changed. Information is open, everything is open. In
today's market, the progress depends completely on
supply chain. Competitive playing field has shifted from
Company Vs Company to Company's Supply Chain Vs
Company's Supply Chain. Even, the companies are hiring
their CEOs from Supply Chain Professionals.
Before talking about “why study supply chain”, let’s have
a look on the recruitment list of renowned companies of
this country. Recently Uniliver has recruited nine fresh
minds as entry level future leaders, whereas two of them
in company’s supply chain section. Same thing is
happening around other MNCs including big names like
BAT, GP, Marico, RB, Banglalink, Robi and so forth. All
companies, during their recruitment process, are
emphasizing on their supply chain section similarly or
more than their other main core sections like Sales, GTM
or HR. But the question is “who are recruited?”
Do we all have the ability to handle
bigger supply chain mechanism of these
large MNCs? Can we join the same
market as those guys are doing?
‘’
19. In Bangladesh, a few universities like BUP, BRAC, etc. have
introduced supply chain in their education system as major or
minor section. The result is on hand, they are ruling on these
recruitment processes. But we also have a brilliant opportunity to
have in-depth knowledge of supply chain that is not only globally
recognized but also can be a key to join the job market arena. That
is to be a Certified Supply Chain Analyst (CSCA).
In Bangladesh, Mind Mapper, under International Supply Chain
Education Alliance (ISCEA), approved CSCA is the only Globally
Recognized Supply Chain Related Certification that can be
achieved during undergrad, post-grad and job-fresher level. One
thing to add, among those who are getting the rare opportunity to
take SCM (Supply Chain Management) as their major/minor in
university education, a large part of them are also becoming CSCA
to add global value to their supply chain expertise. Nevertheless,
as each instructors of CSCA course are highly qualified
former/present CEO, COO, MD – level corporate personnel, CSCA
can be a Corporate encroaching event or a super fast medium to
engage in multiverse communication.
20. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CSCA AND PTAK PRIZE
A question may arise that what is the relationship between CSCA
and PTAK Prize. Quite similar of being CA or CFA, being CSCA is
highly valuable and costly. Normally, it costs around 1Lakh BDT,
but each and every year, ISCEA provides a huge amount of
scholarships for global students like Bangladeshi, European, North
and South American, Arab and Indian students on the basis of their
performance in PTAK prize. Personally, I secured 70% scholarship
and I had to pay only 30k instead of 10k just because of this
reward.
