Below are the guidelines for the Informative Speech. Refresh your memory of the requirements before you record your speech. Remember when recording your speech that you must have an audience of at least 6 adults (over the age of 16), and you must pan the audience before you speak, begin speaking without stopping the tape, and then pan the audience again at the conslusion of your speech. Make sure you begin your recording with your name and the speech you are presenting (i.e. Process speech) and make sure you follow the guidelines for recording speeches, available in the Resources section of our course.
Click the link above to submit your speech, preparation outline, speaking outline, bibliography, audience analysis tally and analysis paragraph. Remember that in order for a speech to be counted as on time, you must submit all the required documents along with the speech video.
After you submit your video, watch the speech again and complete the self-evaluation.

To use a variety of supporting materials in order to add depth to your speech, to add evidence in support of your ideas, and to maintain your audience’s interest in the topic.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Your second formal informative speech is designed to help you further develop speech making skills.
You may give your speech on a PERSON, PLACE, CONCEPT or EVENT
, but not on a process because that was the requirement for your first informative speech. A variety of topics would be appropriate. For example, you might present a biographical sketch of Winston Churchill, or you might research and explain the extent and causes of alcoholism or drug abuse, the significance of the battle at Gettysburg, the causes of the landslide election in 1932, or the growth of cable television. Some topics might lend themselves to persuasive as well as informative presentations. However, you should stick to informing your audience for this speech. (
Do NOT tell the audience what they should do or believe or that something is a problem or beneficial
– because that would get into your opinion and that would be persuasive.) A visual aid should be used for this presentation.
REQUIREMENTS & EVALUATION CRITERIA:
Your speech should be effectively organized, outlined, introduced and concluded as you did for the last speech.
You must orally cite at least 5 references in your presentation. Your examples, statistics and quotations will support your main points and must be cited in 1) your speech, 2) your speech outline, and 3) your bibliography. Not citing your sources in any of those three (3) places will constitute PLAGIARISM and will result in an F grade for the presentation or possibly the course. You must use a minimum of three (3) different types of sources.

In creating a presentation it is important to have credibility so that the
audience will find that you are an authority on a topic.
You get to be an authority by learning about a topic through research. A
student learning objective for this course is to demonstrate the ability to use
search and the Internet to find excellent resources on a particular topic. A
portion of your presentation grade will depend on what you can show you
used for research on your topic and how you discuss what was learned
from the research citations.
A good presenter needs to entertain and inform the audience.
The way the presentation is crafted, how much is revealed in bullets versus
how much the author discusses, often determines how captive the
audience will be. Placing text in a slide and then reading the slide is not
entertaining to most audiences. So find a good summary for each slide,
then have the speaker notes to provide the details you plan to cover. DO
NOT READ your speaker notes!
In order to inform your audience you need to have credible information.
Reciting common topic knowledge will fail to entertain and certainly not be
informative. Try to find a twist on the topic. Find some angle of thinking
about it. For example, did an event occur that has something to do with
the topic. Why is the event important? What does it show about the topic?
As you work to build up the information for your topic, ask yourself some
questions as you do the research.
Who/what explained the topic well? What did it contribute?
Was the citation more of an introduction to the topic or detail?
What details stood out in the citation?
What did you learn from the citation?
What subtopic did I discover as a result of the search?

Failure to have less than the required 6 audience members will result in failing the assignment.

Formal vs. Informal Presentation Style
Presentations are a necessary part of business and there will be times when you will be asked to present about a topic. Sometimes you are given time to prepare a structured presentation and other times you might be asked to give an impromptu presentation with little or no time to prepare. Each of these presentation styles requires good communication skills but there are unique expectations when delivering a formal vs. and informal presentation.
Formal Presentations
A presentation is considered formal when you have been asked to share ideas with an individual or group and you have been given time to prepare. Formal presentations require a very different approach than presenting to your team during a weekly meeting.
Set clearly defined goals
In order to deliver a successful formal presentation you need to be very clear about what it is you want your audience to learn. You need to write down the main points of your presentation and use this as a guide for your outline.
Know your audience.
Are you presenting in front of 100 people or are you presenting in front of a smaller group? Are you presenting to managers and executives or are you presenting to clients? Are you presenting to people who are familiar with the topic? You must know your audience so you can tailor your presentation to meet their needs. You might need to include a hand-out for your audience or perhaps an infographic that summarizes your key points.
Create an outline
When you are giving a formal presentation it is expected that you will be well-prepared and well-rehearsed. You have been given time to prepare so your audience is expecting a well-structured presentation. Therefore, you need to create an outline of your presentation so you will have an order in which to follow.
Use visuals
Again, when you have been given time to prepare it is expected that you will have some visuals for your audience. Formal presentations usually include a PowerPoint or slideshow of some sort so your audience can follow along.
Include questions for
audience interaction
A formal presentation should engage the audience. You can end a formal presentation with a Q&A session or you can ask questions along the way after each point.
Dress the part
Just as the name implies, a formal presentation requires more formal dress. Men might wear a suit or tie while women should wear a nice dress or business suit. You should also always stand during a formal presentation.
Informal Presentations
It is fairly common for business meetings to include impromptu presentations. These types of presentations are usually prepared in a short amount of time and do not require the same organizational methods as a formal presentation.

TIME LIMIT: 6-8 minutes
OBJECTIVES:
1.
To persuade your audience on a proposition of policy; thus, convincing your audience that a specific course of action should be taken.
2.
To use effective methods of persuasion: building credibility, using evidence, using logical reasoning, and appealing to emotions.
3.
To use effective delivery techniques, descriptive language techniques, audience analysis, and a variety of supporting material.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Your formal persuasive speech is designed to help you develop persuasive speech making skills. Your goal is to persuade your audience for or against a Question of Policy. Questions of Policy inevitably involve Questions of Fact and Questions of Value BUT Questions of Policy
always
go beyond both to decide whether something should or should not be done.
In other words, Questions of Policy attempt to persuade an audience that a specific course of action should or should not be taken.
You may seek either passive agreement or immediate action from the audience, both of which should include all three (3) basic issues of policy speeches – need, plan, and practicality.
A variety of topics would be appropriate. For example, you might try to persuade us that same-sex marriage should be legalized, to agree that a security fence should be constructed along the US/Mexico border, to create a living will, to vote for a total ban on human cloning, that school districts should not allow soft-drink companies to stock their products in school vending machines, or that we should put an end to the violence on television.

Speech Title: A creative title will add to audience interest.
General Purpose: Is it to inform? To persuade? To entertain? To mark a special occasion?
Specific Purpose: A specific statement of what you expect to accomplish with your speech - your desired outcome.
Introduction: Grabs the attention of the audience, presents a topic of the speech and tells the audience the major points of your speech.
A. Attention Getter: grab the attention of the audience- ideas include:
Use a famous quotation; tell a story, real or hypothetical; pose questions, rhetorical or directed; make a startling statement; use suspense; make a personal reference; use humor
B. Thesis Statement: The thesis is a single sentence that summarizes your message. Every other part of your speech should support your thesis statement.
Credibility: Somewhere early in the presentation, typically after the thesis statement, but before the preview statement, it will be important to establish credibility as a speaker.
Credibility can be established through reference to your own expertise on the topic and/or through making verbal reference to the sources of your support. This persuades the audience that you are "trustworthy" enough to speak about the subject, which is critical to your success.
You should continue to make references to your credibility throughout the speech to maintain that perception, but it is most important near the start. Body: Contains the main points of your speech and is where you focus on the details; here your intent is to provide all the necessary evidence to explain and support your points.
Preview Statement: Here you preview your main points, which should be stated using parallel language.
Tie to the audience: Somewhere early in the presentation, typically after the preview statement, but before the first main point, it will be important to tie the topic to the audience. Why should they be interested in what you have to say? Why is it important to them?
You should continue to tie the material to your audience throughout the presentation to maintain the importance of the material, but it is most important near the start.
A. Main Point #1: You should have between 2 and 5 main points in the body of your speech, which will be supported by the subordinate points below.

a. Support should be outlined following the conventions of outlining
b. Your outline should be of sufficient detail
2. The number of support points and sub-points in your outline will vary.
a. Be sure to read the text about the different types of outlines.
b. It is important that you use subordination to effectively demonstrate relationships between ideas.

Supporting materials illustrate the main points by clarifying, elaborating and verifying.

What is a effective presentation?
A effective presentation makes the best use of the relationship between the presenter and the audience. It takes full consideration of the audience’s needs in order to capture their interest, develop their understanding, inspire their confidence and achieve the presenter’s objectives.
Careful planning is essential.
Seven stages in planning a presentation
1. Preparation
Many factors affect the design of your presentation. A powerful presenter will acknowledge and address each of the following:
· objectives;
· audience;
· venue;
· remit.
Objectives
Why you are making your presentation? Bear in mind what you want to achieve and what you want your audience to take away with them. Once you have decided upon your objectives, you are in a much better position to make strategic decisions about the design and tone of your presentation. For example, a presentation to a seminar group might require a balanced
argument, whereas a charity appeal might require a more creative approach. Ask yourself:
· what do you want your audience to have understood?
· what action do you want your audience to take following your presentation?
· how can you best design your presentation to meet your objectives?
Audience
Your audience will have a variety of different experiences, interests and levels of knowledge. A powerful presenter will need to acknowledge these and prepare for and respond to them accordingly. Ask yourself:
· how much will your audience already know about your topic?
· how can you link new material to things they might already understand?
· will you need to win them over to a particular point of view?
You may not be able to answer these questions for each member of your audience but you should have enough information to ensure that you have targeted your material at the right level for their needs. This might involve avoiding technical jargon or explaining abstract concepts with clear practical examples. If you fail to consider your audience’s needs, you will fail to appeal to their interest and imagination.
Venue
Where will you be making your presentation? What will the room be like? What
atmosphere will the physical conditions create? A large lecture theatre might create a formal atmosphere. Similarly, a seminar room might create a less formal tone. Ask yourself:
· what kind of atmosphere do you wish to create?
· how might the room arrangement affect your relationship with the audience?
· can you do anything to change the arrangement of the room to suit your
objectives?
· what audio-visual aids can you use?

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing.
