This document provides instructions for Essay #2, an in-class essay assignment. Students will be given a prompt about either Lao-Tzu's "Thoughts from the Tao Te Ching" or Machiavelli's "The Qualities of the Prince" and have two hours to write a 500-750 word response in a blue book. The essay instructions advise students to prepare by attending class discussions, reading the source texts, and buying a blue book to write their response in on the test date. Students who miss the in-class test can make it up by writing it as a revision but will lose the opportunity to rewrite one of their out of class essays.

make-­‐up
essays
are
different
from
the
original:
there
will
only
be
one
essay
prompt
on
the
make-­‐up
test.
