Feathers evolved in theropod dinosaurs prior to the evolution of birds like Archaeopteryx. Several feathered dinosaur fossils have been discovered, including Sinosauropteryx which had down-like feathers and Caudipteryx which had vaned feathers on its tail and limbs. While early feathers included simpler filamentous structures, vaned feathers similar to modern feathers had evolved in dinosaurs like Microraptor gui which had wings with asymmetrical feathers. Feathers are believed to have evolved from scales to aid with temperature regulation before being adapted for flight.
