1700’s -early 1800‘s what’s the story?
Jean Baptiste Lamarck

1809
Suggests that organisms could change during their lifetimes
by selectively using or NOT using various parts of their
bodies.
Traits altered by an individual organism during its lifetime he
called: Acquired CharacteristicsAcquired Characteristics
Principle of Acquired Characteristics:Principle of Acquired Characteristics:
Characteristics acquired by an individual organism could be
passed on to their offspring.
Malthus
❖ If the human population grew unchecked there wouldn’t
be enough living space and food for everyone.
❖ War, famine, disease, etc. keep populations “in check”.
❖ Malthus did put coal in little kids stockings too...
What’s Next?!
Darwin was convinced that species evolved by the
time he read Malthus. What was Darwin
missing for his explanation on evolution?
A Mechanism!A Mechanism!
A scientific explanation basedA scientific explanation based
on natural processes.on natural processes.
