Evil In Paradise Lost
"Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned,
or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn" (Nolan, Nolan, The Dark Knight).
These men are those which evil protrudes off them like smoke from a fire. In many works evil is
manifested with its presence, the villains' goals, their motive, and their strategy to achieving their
goal. One big question that one must ask about anything is its beginnings. The same goes for evil. In
the Western society, most people associate evil with the Christian Devil. In Paradise Lost by Milton,
he displays the inception of evil and the rise of Satan. So the story of the start of this being must be
one of violence and betrayal. On the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The best villains have really thought out plans with end goals that justify their sometimes
outrageous plans. Iago is one of those villains. Iago's goal is clouded because his reasoning is
twisted. Iago starts to let his goal be known when Othello and Desdemona are cuddling up. Iago
hopes "set down the pegs that make this music,/As honest as I am" (2,1,198–199). From this point
on it is believed that Iago wants to bring Othello down to his level. Iago wants to bring Othello's
happiness down to his level of happiness which seems to be none before he started his plan. Another
interpretation is Iago could also mean that he wants to brings Othello's relationship with Desdemona
down to the same place as Iago's relationship with Emilia. Iago does not trust Emilia because he
thinks other men have been in his bed and then he tries to convince Othello of the same. This
becomes a very apparent when he names three goals: to be "even'd with him, wife for wife", to " put
the Moor/At least into a jealousy so strong/That judgment cannot cure" and to "Make the Moor
thank me, love me and reward me" (2,1,295–304). It seems that Iago is making up reasons for
himself to get back at Othello and justify his goal. Based Othello's character he does not seem like
the man to have relations with a married woman especially not one of his soldiers. It is also ironic
that Iago wants puts a jealousy in about Cassio when it is jealousy

Essay about Don John is a Credible Villain
Don John is a Credible Villain
Don John is a believable villain because he is a bastard which means that in Elizabethan times Don
John would have been seen as evil. Don John's legitimate brother on the other hand is wealthy and
well respected by everyone. Don John hates Claudio because Claudio has taken his position as Don
Pedro's right hand man. Don John even acknowledges his own evil and he also shows no mercy.
Don John's character doesn't alter throughout the play, meaning he is only there to cause trouble.
Don John dislikes Don Pedro because Don John is the illegitimate brother, a bastard child. This
means that he isn't recognised by the court of Messina or by anyone. Although Don John is of royal
blood, his royal blood would've ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the men went to war, Claudio proved himself to Don Pedro. Claudio took the position away
from Don John as Don Pedro's right hand man. This much to Don John's displeasure, he says to
Conrade "He has all the glories of my overthrow". This means that Claudio is now best friends with
Don Pedro and being called a hero by Don Pedro. A characteristic of a credible villain is a motive
for their evilness, Don John's is he is jealous of Claudio's relationship with his brother. Don John
tries to ruin Claudio's happiness by claming Hero has been unfaithful. Don John also has henchmen,
which is another characteristic of a villain.
Nowadays, it is hard to understand why it is so horrific that Hero isn't a virgin(but she was). But in
those times being a virgin until marriage was a huge thing. Hero would have been cast out of court
and it would have been the end of her life. Although some women would have gone off to be nuns.
Don John, knowing what would happen to her; carries out his plan to ruin Hero's life anyway in
order to hurt Claudio. The fact that Don John shows no mercy , is more evidence that he is a
credible villain. Don John does not let his emotions get the better of him.
Don John is aware of his own evil, he says to Conrade "let it be known that I am a plain dealing
villain". Some could argue that Don John isn't plain dealing because he is devious. If Don John

Lord Of The Flies Character Analysis
Lord of the Flies Essay
William Golding was an author in the 20th century who wrote many great books including Lord of
the Flies. In Lord of the Flies there are many characters that start off good and smart but as the book
goes on, many characters turn into freaks and maniacs. This paper will list off three characters Jack,
Roger, and Ralph, and how the changed for the worse as time went on in the novel.
One of the characters is Jack, he starts off in the book looking like the bad guy as he always
counter–arguments Ralph and makes fun of Piggy. Jack, while mean, was a normal kid that didn't
seem to bad, but he wanted to kill a pig and he found one in the first chapter, but he looked at it
holding up his knife but he didn't strike it down. He felt bad about seeing the flesh and skin rip
open, blood pouring down its throat of a living creature, this is shown how he kept pretending that
he was tough when he came up with an excuse "I was choosing a place" said Jack, he said that over
and over. After that, he swore to kill the next pig and he did, showing no mercy.
Roger is a character that is portrayed as the all bad, although at the beginning even though he wasn't
the nicest, he wasn't evil. Roger saw the littuns playing on the beach, making sandcastles and having
a great time, until Roger came running through stomping all over the sandcastles and crushing them.
One of the littuns, Henry, was walking through the forest, with Roger secretly

Is Shakespeare A Hero Or A Villain Research Paper
Valorous morrow to thee, 8F
As you probably know, Shakespeare was a playwright who has written many stories and poems.
And in these he has created a number of fascinating characters, including villains. When reading a
story, people tend to identify the hero. In fact, it is the villain who makes the story exciting! But has
anyone ever thought about how a story would go without the villain? For example, what would the
story of Cinderella be without the ever–present evil of Cinderella's wicked stepmother and
stepsisters? Shakespeare has created a great number of female and male heros and villains.
Characters like; Portia and Shylock to Claudio and Don John. These opposing character bring their
stories together.
One of Shakespeare's most famous villains would be Iago from Othello, who persuades Othello to
murder his wife. Then there's Richard the III who was both the protagonist and major villain of the
play who was deformed in body and twisted in the mind. He tried everything and murdered
everyone that got in the way of him and the throne. He was self–centred, sadistic and corrupt. One
of Shakespeare's most famous characters is a female villain called Lady MacBeth who was an
ambitious women seeking power and control of others. She even urged her husband to kill the king
to seize the crown. Many of Shakespeare's villains seem to have some sort of role in seizing power
and being in control. Many of the best theatrical moments ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

series, as they both had heard a prophecy making them believe that they were invincible. However,
they both misinterpreted the prophecy, and in the end they both end up

Playdoh: Superheroes Or Super Villains?
A super villain is defined as the antithesis of a superhero, and are generally embedded into a plot to
foil the actions of a superhero during the climax of a story. Superheroes possess powers that are
exceptional to any power or ability a human could normally achieve. Likewise, a supervillain must
dominate special powers, abilities and apparatus to pose a threat to superheroes. While the
superhero continuously tries to better society, the supervillain refutes their attempts in order to
inflict destruction and dismay. Typically, their motives are derived from traumatic incidents that
occurred in the early onset of their lives (Gullo 2016). Albeit for some, no traumatic past or bad
accidents were inflicted on the lives of these villainous creatures, as their motive comes from
passion, experience, and a drive for chaos. It was hard for most to understand why Playdoh had
become so vile and gruesome. From a small town in Soviet Russia, he always held somber thoughts
and obscure motives to wreak havoc and mayhem across the town. Playdoh envisioned himself as
dominating the world, although all knew it was a difficult ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Despite his attempts to destroy the world and cause distress to an entire state, let alone an entire
nation, Playdoh was ultimately unsuccessful in his venture through being a villain. From taking
hostage of civilians touring the statue of liberty to taking over a flight on American Airlines,
Playdoh could never achieve the goals that he set for himself as his plans were constantly foiled and
never went as planned. This news would be consolidated to most, but to Playdoh, it would just
motivate him to seek for success and make further attempts to overthrow the government, gain
control of the Northern population, and pave way back to Soviet Russia where he wished to become

Unwind Character Analysis
The main protagonist in Unwind is Connor Lassiter, a sixteen year old rebel who found his unwind
order form when looking for a stapler in his dad office. Connor was a rebellious teenager who got
into fights with his parents and at school. He is stubborn, impulsive, and very easily angered, which
means he often loses his temper. He has three emergency modes, while most people have two. Fight
or Flight. Connors has fight, flight, or screw up royally. As the stores progress Connor becomes
more rational and is able to control his anger, of course this is with the help of Risa. Now in the
whole series the main antagonist is the whole idea of being unwound. However each book has their
own antagonist other than being unwound, in Unwind its Roland Taggart. When Roland and Connor
first meet they both have a mutual dislike for one another. Roland is very similar to Connor in the
sense that they were both troublemaker, expect Roland was much worse than Connor. Roland was
sent to be unwound because he beat up his stepdad for beating up his mom, which in turn his mom
sided with the stepdad. Roland puts up a tough front but he is just as scared as everyone else when it
comes to being unwinding.
There is really not good or bad for Connor and Roland they both just want to survive. Roland is just
worried about him and himself only, while Connor is worried about Risa, Lev, and so many others.
While it would be said that Connor is the good guy and Roland is the bad guy, I would say that they

Similarities Between Othello And The Crucible
The antagonists of a story are usually not the ones critically acclaimed. Due to our human
inclination it's fairly relevant that, as readers, more of an emotional attachment is built with the
protagonists. However, in spite of that, villains still deserve our attention. From taking a close look
at a few villains and the methods in which they manipulate, parallels in strategy are prevalent. A few
examples of antagonists that particularly stand out are: Iago from the tragedy Othello written by
William Shakespeare, Roger Chillingworth from the novel The Scarlet Letter written by Nathaniel
Hawthorne, and Abigail Williams from Arthur Miller's novel The Crucible, these characters all use
isolation to manipulate others throughout the stories.
Iago time and time again paves the way to be in the right place at the right time to produce exactly
the outcome that he wants. During Act 3 scene 3 in Othello, Iago is alone with the main character

Chillingworth does the exact opposite. For example during chapter 10, Chillingworth interrogates

TO WHAT EXTENT DOES SHAKESPEARE PRESENT MACBETH
AS A VILLAIN?
TO WHAT EXTENT DOES SHAKESPEARE PRESENT MACBETH AS A VILLAIN?
Shakespeare presents Macbeth more extensively as a villain using methods which would be more
understood in the era the play was composed, which was the Jacobean period, but influenced by the
reign of Elizabeth. During the Elizabethan period people were preoccupied with the supernatural,
which is one of the main topics in Shakespeare's play. In my opinion Shakespeare structures the play
to make the audience see Macbeth transforming from a hero into a villain, we can also see how
Macbeth's character transfigures from a valiant, noble soldier to a deceitful traitor.
Shakespeare exhibits Macbeth as being heroic both at the prelude and the climax of the play by
portraying him as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The letter triggers the series of evil acts committed by the Macbeths, which starts with the killing of
Duncan as a result of Lady Macbeth's manipulative ambition. Lady Macbeth acts as a catalyst to
make Macbeth's transition happen faster because she starts to become manipulative as soon as she
hears the witches' prophecies: "All hail Macbeth that shalt be King hereafter." The prophecy comes
from the supernatural aspect of the play: the witches and Lady Macbeth is indirectly persuaded by
the witches to manipulate Macbeth in this matter. The reason for her manipulating Macbeth is her
own ambition to become queen, which in ways is stronger than Macbeth's. This is actually shown by
Macbeth in his speech in Act 1 Scene 7: "Nothing but males," here Macbeth is stating that he knows
how much time and effort Lady Macbeth has put into the planning of the regicide and he will go
through with it. In my opinion the quote shows that Lady Macbeth has got more ambition than
Macbeth because she is the one that has planned the entire plot and she is the one who keeps trying
to manipulate Macbeth into killing Duncan. At this point in the play the Jacobean audience would
have started having suspicions about Macbeth because of his dealings with the supernatural, which
was considered evil and wrong;

Losing My Friend
In 8th grade there was 5. In 9th grade there was 4. In 10th grade there was 3.
Losing the people who really know you is one of the worst and best things you can go through. It
happened to me. When I was a freshman I was 14 years old, I had just lost my uncle, very
traumatically, a few months prior. But he's not the loss i'm talking about. A few months after he
died, I got ditched by my friends. Right before finals. They had a history of ditching there friend,
how do I know this, because I did it to someone with them.
In 8th grade we started out as the unbreakable group of friends. We spent as much time together as
we could. It was the friendship I always wanted. Until it wasn't. Soon we started getting annoyed
with Molly. Eventually we ended the friendship. The worst and most devastating way possible. We
quit talking to her. Of course we thought she was the bad guy and she thought we were the bad guys.
We never really had a major blow up, there was no gigantic dramatic fight in front of the whole
school like you see in the movies. Just hurt feelings on each side. We had enormous amounts of
detest for each other. Our relationship ended around the middle of 8th grade. After that Hailey and I
grew incredibly close. She was my absolute best friend. Both my parents loved her. She helped me
through my uncle's death, helped my mom and I pack our house up when we moved. This all
occurred after we were no longer friends with Molly. But all good things come to an end. Just

Why Is Don John A Villain
Bastard, a child born out of wedlock, an illegitimate descendant that "deserves to be slapped." Don
John, coined as "Shakespeare's most passive villain" is plagued by the society of Messina that
rejected him from the very moment of birth. Looking through the idea of predetermined roles in life,
we can come to realize the roots of Don John's agitation arises from his illegitimacy, stacking him at
the bottom of the social hierarchy. Here he feels obliged to act the part of the villain, delegated by
his very own blood. What exactly determines the words written on this label of hero vs villain? How
much comes from inner predisposition, from personal destiny, from mere interpretation? Is someone
obliged to become a hero or villain by virtue of their existence, or are heroes and villains molded

He was given a house to live in, yet never had a true home. He was taken under the family name yet
would never be treated as a part of it. Even Don Pedro sook a more "fitting" companion to spend
time with. Freely gifted to his brother, Don would never receive the same money, status or respect.
Now I'm sure you can come to see where the bitterness and spurn arose from, things he had no
control over defined his life, fitting him with more than enough motivation to spoil the happiness of
the residents of Messina. Yet being a shakespearean comedy, focused on displaying the comic and
follies of misunderstandings, it can fairly said he lacks the depth and development of some of
Shakespeare's darker villains from tragedies, rendering him an underdeveloped and arguably
uninteresting antagonist. Melancholy and sullen by nature, he ironically believes that his brooding
makes him appear strong, but it actually shows him to be a coward. Don John is too caught up in
self–pity to do anything that could better his life, so he simply lives to destroy the lives of

A True Hero In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies
A true hero is not the one in the spotlight afraid of what the people will think about his actions a true
hero stands and proclaims for what is right although people may despise him for his/her actions. The
heros of real life are usually the one that people think are considered over the top and usually end up
being ignored while people agree with a person who says the same thing but only slightly less over
the top. William Golding saw this and have incorporated into his novel Lord of the Flies. Due to the
recurring pattern of the hero being the protagonist people automatically assumes the protagonist to
be the hero, although he/she may not be the hero, but rather a support character as shown in the
novel Lord of the Flies.
The definition of a hero is a person who struggles against evil for what is right. In most literature the
villain embodies the evil that the hero is struggling against. The hero most often is the person who is
struggling against. In the beginning of the book Jack clearly did not enjoy Piggy's presence as is
proven when Jack snapped at Piggy when he was telling them the names of the boy around them.
Jack was originally alright with Ralph but he never liked Piggy. From the beginning of the book this
is is already setting up the classic format of having the villain mark the hero as the enemy at the
beginning. Jack was not only against Piggy for the beginning of the book "'I got the conch–" Jack
turned fiercely "You shut up!'" (42) this show that Piggy is still struggling against Jack the villain of
the novel trying to withhold Piggy form speaking reason to the people of the island. Jack is not only
insulting him, but he has malicious intents towards Piggy. "He took a step, and able at last to hit
someone, stuck his fist into Piggy's stomach"(75) Jack could of chose to lash out at Ralph but
instead he went towards Piggy because although he and Ralph may bump heads they are still friends
but Piggy is his enemy.
The main reason that Ralph is considered to be the hero of the narrative is because of the common
assumption that the protagonist is always the hero. In most literature this is correct, but there are
always exceptions, many times even if the protagonist is the villain people still trying

Are Villains Good Or Bad
Throughout history, villains have been apart of every aspect of life. A villain can be seen in a
multitude of areas ranging from being a physically abusive person to a person that is very mentally
manipulative. Villains can also be seen in other areas from children's movies to real life scenarios.
But the most notorious villains are the ones society gets to see in some form of theater or film. A
good story or film often has some form of an obstacle to overcome in the version of a bad guy. And
although each villain has their own specific characteristics that makes them bad, there is a criteria or
checklist that each villain must meet prior to obtaining the label of a villain. Whether it is just one of
the criteria or all of the mannerisms, a good bad guy must display one of the traits. This then brings
up the question, what criteria is displayed and needed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jerry Jenkins is the author of over 190 books, so he has a very good outlook on what is needed for
the proper villain. A villain can display many traits but all it takes is the fulfilment of one of them to
make a villain. The traits vary from behavioral characteristics such as: being manipulative, jealous,
hateful, persuasive, deceitful, and vengeful. A good villain can also have many physical
characteristics such as: being likable, acting kind to people as a reward, and demands attention and
respect when ever they are present. To top it off, a villain can display many mental health
instabilities such as: being convinced that they are doing the right thing, doing their deeds to protect
other people regardless of who gets hurt along the way. The options of criteria can be endless but for
the most part, villains tend to display one or many of these traits. And these traits help the audience
identify and label the character as a villain so the story can progress towards a

The Merchant of Comedy
The Merchant of Venice, a story of despair and pain. Wait, nevermind it's a comedy. There are too

this play would have been very humerous. I still think this play is a comedy because what isn't

A Good Man Is Hard To Find And Where Are You Going Where...
"A Good Man is Hard to Find" and "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been" share the same
plot by having the protagonists in each of the stories end with death. Although their plots are the
same, the landscape and imagery of the surroundings, leading up to the death of the characters are
different. In these stories, there are different points like the unexpected deaths to make the ending
the same. Each story consists of a different scenery/ landscape imagery to show the ultimate ending
of death to the main characters.
In the story "A Good Man is Hard to Find", it starts out by having the family go on a vacation to
Tennessee and not to Florida because there is a Misfit on the loose. On their way, the family passes
different landmarks including a cotton field and a restaurant. The Grandmother realizes that there
was a plantation she once visited nearby. On their way to the house, she realizes that the house is not
actually where she says it was and she jerks herself making the cat jump in front of the drivers face
making him crash the car. A passing car comes and the Grandmother points out it's the Misfit with
his two men. The Misfit says, "you shouldn't have said who I was, you should have kept it a secret"
(O' Connor 1241). This forces the Misfit to send his men to go kill John Wesley and Bailey in the
woods. The grandmother then looks to the Misfit and asks him to pray. The Grandmother then says
that "you are like one of my own children" (O' Connor 1245) and after that the Misfit shoots and
kills the Grandmother. He wishes that it didn't have to end that way because he is proclaiming he is
not a bad man, he didn't find pleasure out of it.

How Does Shakespeare Present Iago As A Villain
In the 16th century drama Othello, written by William Shakespeare, the character "Iago" establishes
himself as the villain early in the tragedy. In the drama, Iago is furious that Othello overlooked him
and gave the lieutenant position in the army to Michael Cassio, while Iago remained lowly ranked.
Iago, seeking his revenge against Othello, uses characters such as Desdemona, the wife of Othello,
Roderigo, a man deeply in love with Desdemona, Emilia, the wife of Iago, and Michael Cassio,
current lieutenant, as tools in his plot for his revenge. As Iago's plot against Othello begins to
unfold, the ones dearest to Othello seem to disappoint him in the utmost all because of Iago using
them to fulfill his plot without them knowing. Iago lets it be known that he is the villain through his
soliloquies during the drama. His evil, revenge–seeking nature characterizes Iago as the villain of
this tragedy. Iago reminds the audience of his evil plot against Othello and enhances his villain
characterization through his soliloquies in each of the acts by defining to the audience what his plot
is and how he will execute his it.
As the first scene of Act 1 comes to an end, an interaction between Iago and Roderigo diminishes
and an Iago soliloquy begins. In this soliloquy, Iago continued ... Show more content on

My Personal Success : My Philosophy Of Success
Success can mean different things to different people. The definition of success can change for a
person at different stages of their life. A person's culture, family, friends, experiences, and
environment can be a big influence on defining what success is to that individual. We all hear the
stories of people failing and failing until one day they make it to the top, beat the bad guy or pass
the trial. The story can also go that they got all they desired or raised up from the ashes. All of these
have one thing in common, it is at the end of the story. It's never the beginning or middle. It's always
at the end of the story that the person succeeds in their quest. But why does it have to be at the end?
Simply, like how there is no good without evil. You can not have succeed without struggling and
failing first. My philosophy of success is simply being content with your life. To me personality, I
still do not know what contentment is to me and that's fine. I can guess it is being independent, with
a job I am passionate about and surrounded by people that truly care about me. Success is finding
that point in life that, if things stayed like how they are at this moment then it would be alright. I'm
not saying to stop improving yourself or that after that point nothing bad or better will happen.
People should always try to improve themselves and in reality, bad things will always happen at one
point. Therefor my philosophy is to work towards that feeling of contentment. It

Shakespeare As A Villain In William Shakespeare's Romeo...
William Shakespeare's play, 'Romeo and Juliet' is wrought with tragedy. Like most tragedies,
'Romeo and Juliet' too has a villain, or rather villains. However, what is different perhaps is that
Shakespeare's villains themselves are victims of entrenched social prejudices. Tybalt and Lords
Capulet and Montague may be seen as tragic characters who were driven into villainy by a family
feud.
Juliet's cousin Tybalt, is one of the most villainous characters in 'Romeo and Juliet' as he is the cause
of multiple adversities such as Mercutio's death and Romeo's banishment. Tybalt is belligerent and
quarrelsome and constantly picks fights and adds fuel to the fire that is the feud between the
Capulets and Montagues. This occurs throughout the play. For example, when Tybalt makes his first
appearance he incites the fight between the servants of the two houses, contrasting to Benvolio's
fleeting attempts to keep peace. Such hostility and antagonism causes the deaths of Mercutio and
Tybalt himself, as well as Romeo's banishment. This is shown when Tybalt proclaims "I am for
you," challenging Mercutio to a fight as he draws his sword. Thus leading to the downfall of the two
surly characters. These events are the stepping stones that lead to the tragedy of the star crossed
lovers' deaths. Had it not been for Tybalt's inimical ways, the main tragedies of 'Romeo and Juliet'
would not have occurred. This makes Tybalt one of the most villainous characters in the play.
Lord Capulet and Montague's immature persistence to keep the feud between the families alive is
the cause for several tragedies in the play. Arguably, the saddest element in 'Romeo and Juliet' is the
human created obstacle which prevents the union of two young lovers. The only hurdle in their
love's path is the approval of the Lords Capulet and Montague. Despite Lord Capulet stating, "My
will to her consent is but a part," when informing Paris of Juliet's free will, he forbids Juliet from
declining Paris' proposal. Lord Capulet's violent reaction to hearing Juliet's true wishes forces
Romeo and Juliet to despair and they are forced to great lengths to be with each other. This ends in
their eventual demise. The Lords of the families have the power to end the feud

The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn By William Twain
1. Twain must have thought Huck carried on his ideas best, and Huck is character that is quite
dynamic throughout the story because everyone heavily influences him until he decides to take
control of his own life.
2. The first act would be like an introduction to Huck's life and how he lives with the widow
because of his rough life. The next act would be his escape with Jim and starting his path up the
river like his call to action. Huck's "I'll go to hell moment," should be act three because that is the
moment the audience sees him no longer on the fence about everything. The fourth act would be the
plan to help Jim escape because freedom is so close yet so far. Obviously the last act will involve
catching up with the characters and providing closure for most.
3. The first one would be Huck abusive father because he seems to be the only one who can truly
hold back. Jim is running away from slavery and needs to get his family back too. The Wilks sisters
need to find their voice and independence. Huck also needs to find himself and not bend to others
will. The main ones are solved. Huck's father dies. Jim finds his freedom. The Wilks sisters stop the
king and the dauphin. Huck presumably figures part of his life out and then the book is left in the
open. The bigger scale problems of society approving of slavery is defiantly not resolved nor in the
present day. Human trafficking exists. Tom Sawyer's stupidity is also incurable.

1979. Choose a complex and important character in a novel or a play of recognized literary merit
who might on the basis of the character's actions alone be considered evil or immoral. In a well–
organized essay, explain both how and why the full presentation of the character in the work makes
us react more sympathetically than we otherwise might. Avoid plot summary The stereotypical an
evil villain always has a damsel in distressed usually tied as a hostage while wearing dark and evil
attire only out for money and power. In the play, A Doll 's House, by Henrik Ibsen the reader is
presented with an antagonist not a villain, Krogstad. This man does seek money, but he does not
have a passion for hatred and wickedness like the typical villain does. Readers may interpret this
character as a villain; however, with the horrible things that he has gone through and what he needs
to do in order to provide for his family makes him behave in such a way that he can easily be
mistaken as a villain. Krogstad is widely wronged and is responsive to the treatment he takes from

Othello, The Duchess Of Malfi, And Paradise Lost
Elizabeth Andrews

Professor Earley
Final: Long Essay
While reading Othello, The Duchess of Malfi, and Paradise Lost there is a noticeable theme
throughout all of them. Throughout each of the three works there is at least one character that is
considered to be a villain. A villain is a cruel character whose evil actions and motives are important
to the main plot of the story. The three characters that are considered to be villains include: Iago
from Othello, Bosola from The Duchess of Malfi, and Satan from Paradise Lost.
In the play, Othello, written by William Shakespeare, the character that shows the most
characteristics of a villain is Iago. The downfall of Othello is caused by Iago who is a manipulative
liar. Iago is the main villain of the story and manipulates Othello and most of the other characters.
Iago's manipulative personality allows him to advance in his evil scheme leading to Othello's
downfall. Iago worked alongside Othello and Cassio, Othello's lieutenant, for a long time and used
his knowledge of their character to manipulate them. When Iago said, "And I of whom his eyes have
seen the proof. At Rhodes, at Cyprus, and at other grounds" he claimed to have been witness to both
Othello and Cassio's weaknesses (I.i.25–26). He knew that he had the ability to manipulate them,
and this foreshadowed his use of knowledge to ruin them. Iago is cruel and took pride in
manipulating Othello and Cassio. Iago formed close relationships with many of his fellow

OFF, by Mortis Ghost
What truly makes a 'villain' to us? Is it the need to cause mayhem, a long, resounding evil laugh? Or
just someone whose values run in opposition to ours? Whatever the case may be, we perceive these
characters carefully, recognizing them almost instantly as forces to be reckoned with– That is, most
of the time. In the next few paragraphs I aim to explore why what the most frightening of villains
terrify us the most. Mortis Ghost's 'OFF', a french RPG from 2007, will be our setting for this
phenomenal antagonist. This indie game features a delightful soundtrack, strategic turn–based
combat, and an increasingly dark storyline. The adventure begins with you, the player, being
assigned to control a stoic hero known as 'The Batter'. If he expressed emotions, he would be

called Zone 0, entrusted by some unknown force with the task of 'purifying' the land. You encounter
a stray, eloquent and articulate cat calling itself 'The Judge'. It assists you in getting oriented in the
world, and guides you safety through the deserted landscape and to the cusp of the first inhabited
zone, Zone 1. It departs, promising to see you again. As you advance through Zones 1, 2, and 3, The
Batter continues to insist he is the savior of the world, sent to purify the evils within. The timid and
neurotic inhabitants known as 'Elsen' more or less welcome his presence, especially when tormented

Evil In Frankenstein
In many works of literature, some characters are driven by lust, power, hatred, acknowledgement,
and greed. Such motivations can be either used to harness good or evil. The composition of an
extraordinary villain can bring frustration, suspense, and create a love– hate relationship with the
audience. Consequently, a remarkable villain is a crucial aspect of the plot. The villain is a deciding
factor as to whether the plot of the story will be compelling or not. A description of a bad guy

Madness In Lady Macbeth
Many plays written in the Elizabethan era test humanity, gender roles, and address madness. In
William Shakespeare's Macbeth, the play does not fail to include these ideas and many more. Lady
Macbeth is a very complicated character who exploits her villainous characteristics and uses literary
references to manipulate Macbeth into doing evil acts. With the thought of power in mind, Lady
Macbeth digs deep into her soul "unsexing" herself, asking the devil to release himself onto her to
do whatever it takes to ultimately gain the power of the throne. Throughout the play, Shakespeare
uses Lady Macbeth to exemplify the madness associated with power and the acts it takes to achieve
such things. Lady Macbeth shows how power can make someone question themselves and their
morals when they desperately want something. The first impression of Lady Macbeth is her villainy,
asking the devil to shed her remorse and humanly feelings and femininity: "come, you spirits/ That
tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here,/ And fill me from the crown to the toe topful/ of direst
cruelty. Make thick my blood./ Stop up th'access and passage to remorse..." (I.v.47–51). She
currently has the ability to feel remorse and to feel as women feel but must shed these feelings of
empathy to do devious things. Her madness after regretting Macbeth's murdering symbolizes the
effect of her actions of pressuring Macbeth to murder has done to her and the regret she feels toward
his actions. She does not have an illness,

The Superhero Of Superhero Movies
Superhero movies have been on the rise lately. These movies are often looked at as entertainment
for people who play Dungeons and Dragons and are simply mindless pleasure; however, this is not
the case. The reason behind the popularity of superhero movies is more than just the want of the
common comic book reader. The superhero movie industry has made a sharp incline in popularity;
in fact there are more superhero movies now than ever before. A website called Fights, Tights and
Movie Nights listed all of the superhero movies made since the 1980's by year and these were their
findings. In the 1980's an average of three to four super movies came out a year. In the 1990's these
movies were made on average five to six times per year. In the 2000's the movies doubled to 12–13
produced on average each year. Today, 2010's, the average number of superhero movies has again
doubled in size with it now resting at twenty–two to twenty–three superhero movies made on
average each year. The drastic increase of the number of superhero movies leaves the average movie
attendee wondering why they are seeing this spike of superhero movies. The increase of superhero
movies can be contributed to a few key factors: the advances of technology in the movie industry,
the movie genre's adaption to be socially relevant, and the characters now possessing more
humanistic qualities (Fights...).
When asking most people why they think superhero movies have made such surges in popularity

Macbeth Is Evil
What defines a villain? Is it a person who whose actions has negatively affected society? Acted
immoral? Has done something that is scorned down upon by society? Or is it simply a person who
has done wrong in general? Many argue that a villain is "Yes" to all these questions but I believe
otherwise. I believe that a villain is not just someone who has done wrong, or acted immorally, but
someone who has done those things without reason. The more we think about it, the more we see
how unlikely these crimes apply to reality and how much they evade us from the truth of the villain
world. The character Macbeth in the tragedy of Macbeth and Jae–Hee in The Girl Who See Smells

did I wish he were dead. Instead, I felt sympathy and remorse for his wrongful deeds. At this point,
you're probably thinking " What a strange, strange person. Why would she even justify for this guy
in the first place?" In this case, the villain,Jae–Hee, like Macbeth was not "born evil." It was simply
his experiences that led him to make the decisions that he did. His childhood life had been terrifying
in the sense that his whole family had been previously slaughtered by another man. Determined to
exert revenge, Jae–Hee embodies his life around the idea of catching the murder and everyone he

Examples Of Villain In The Nun
Villainy in The Nun
There are many villains in The Nun by Diderot. There are many things that define a villain.
According to Cambridge Dictionary, a villain is "a bad person who harms other people or breaks the
law, or a cruel or evil character in a book, play, or film" (Cambridge Dictionary). There are some
characters that fit this description in the book, but Sister Sainte–Christine is the greatest villain of
them all. In The Nun, Sister Sainte–Christine is a villain because she is cruel to Suzanne. Her
cruelty is shown when Sister Sainte–Christine abuses her physically and mentally, she turns the
other nuns against Suzanne, and breaks rules in the convent to cause harm to Suzanne.

She is technically breaking the law, and that is a huge sign of being a villain. Sister Sainte–Christine

Sister Sainte–Christine proves that she is a villain in many ways. She is the worst villain in The Nun
because she meets all of the criteria to be a villain and surpasses it. Sister Sainte–Christine is very
cruel toward Suzanne and punishes her for things that are not her fault. She takes the punishments to

Is Anton Chigurh a Positive or Negative Influence on Literature? In Cormac McCarthy's book No
Country for Old Men, there is a hitman named Anton Chigurh who is hired to take back the money
that Llewellyn Moss took. He is described as a cold and calculated killer who will do anything to
get the job done. Even though Anton Chighur kills, steals, and works for a drug gang, he possesses
principles, skills, and values that are not present in even the good characters of the story. Anton
Chigurh should not be labelled as a true antagonist of the story but as the necessary evil, a hired

commitment and the realize that the bad guys can win as well in stories and in real life. Anton
Chigurh would literally take a bullet for somebody and risk his own neck to get the job done. If
Chigurh focused on a more noble or positive goal, he could have benefited the world. Readers can
even learn about motivation and drive from Chigur which is desperately needed in today's time. The
reason why I see Anton Chigurh as a positive influence is because he is driven, motivated, and gets
his job done. In today's time, people are not motivated or driven to do something. They have
become lazy. I have seen it in school and work where fellow classmates or coworkers either

Near the end of the movie Beauty and the Beast, Gaston reaches the Beast's castle, and attempts to
kill him. The Beast was able to kill Gaston, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His conceited personality is illustrated throughout the movie, especially with regards to his
obsessive interest in Belle. Gaston is so self–centered and confident that Belle will agree to marry
him, that he never truly cares for her opinion: "I'd like to thank you all for coming to my wedding.
But first I'd better go in there and uh, propose to the girl!" (Beauty and the Beast). Arranging for a
wedding without Belle's permission, is truly a consequence of Gaston's self–absorbed nature.
Without his overly high self esteem and confidence, Gaston would not be the well–known and loved
villain that he is today. Many cannot truly be the greatest villain since they are not capable of
believing in themselves. Gaston's overconfidence plays a very important role in making him the
most evil Disney antagonist. His personality is much more loud and entertaining than the other
antagonists, due to his egotistical nature, making him a key member of the dinner party. He would
also contribute to interesting conversations with some of the other evil members of the party. For the
mentioned reasons, Gaston would be ideal as Disney's best villain and guest of honour due to his
incredibly large

Hamlet's Frustration Essay
Hamlet's Frustration
In order to understand Hamlet, we must understand his frustration. This frustration is most clear in
his famous monologue, famously beginning with the line "Oh what a rogue and peasant slave am I."
This self–condemnation is contrasted by his admiration for the actor of the previous scene, who "in
a fiction" is able to "force his soul to his own conceit." The word "soul" is an example of metonymy,
as the soul represents the actor's "visage," "tears," "distraction," and "voice." Thus Hamlet equates
"soul" with one's actions, so by his own comparison his soul is weak, as he does not take action
against the king. The second sentence is furthermore a rhetorical question, beginning with, "Is it
notŠ" So clearly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of being "pregnant" Hamlet instead admits he can say "nothing." Ironically, the same word
was used earlier to describe the actor's cause ("for nothing,/for Hecuba"). Hamlet thus feels
completely impotent in his situation, like a "slave." He rhetorically asks himself, "Am I a coward?"
From cowardice, humiliation results, as Hamlet in his mind's eye is being taunted by Claudius, who
is calling him a "villain." The word villain is especially ironic, since clearly Claudius is the villain,
the murderer, and also since a villain is often meant to mean the antagonist of a play. Thus in a sense
it is Hamlet who is the antagonist of the play, working against his noble instincts. Then Hamlet
describes what Claudius does to him, metaphorically breaking his "pate across," and plucking out
his "beard," to blow it in his "face."
These images of humiliation make one imagine a slave master belittling his slave or an abusive
parent scolding his child. Then he decides he deserves this humiliation, saying "swounds, I should
take it" since he is "pigeon–livered and lack[s] gall." This is in violent contrast to what Hamlet
would do or "should" have done: "fatted all the region kites with the slave's offal," which is what
Hamlet feels Claudius deserves. The word "slave" is ironic since this is what Hamlet feels he
himself is, indicating that the roles

The Importance Of Villain In William Shakespeare's King Lear
Whether one is a villain in a novel, movie, or in real life, it is said there is a root to all evil. Whether
it's power, jealousy, or loneliness, one can be or become evil from the sole reason of a matter that is
uncontrollable or a resentment towards other beings. In the play King Lear written by William
Shakespeare, Edmund, the illegitimate son of Gloucester had taken a turn for the worst as his
insecurity of being a "bastard" began to interfere with the relationship between his father and his
brother Edgar. As Edmunds manipulative nature unfolds, the deceiving power he holds amongst his
family, jealousy of unfair rule, and the insecurity of being an illegitimate child has intermixed into
the source of Edmunds villainy. One's motive to intentionally disrupt others from normality can be
acquired from a variety of reasons such as being dissatisfied with one's position. Edmunds source of
dissatisfaction is derived from the jealousy of Gloucester's illegitimate son also known as his
brother Edgar. Edmunds jealousy can be seen from the start as he is confused why only Edgar can
take the next heir of the throne. For example, "...Well then, Legitimate Edgar, I must have your land.
Our father's love is to the bastard Edmund As to th' legitimate. Fine word, 'legitimate,' Well, my
legitimate, if this letter speed And my invention thrive, Edmund the base Shall top th' legitimate. I
grow, I prosper. Now, gods, stand up for bastards" (1.2.15–22). Edmund has decided that if he

Evil In Paradise Lost

  • 1. Evil In Paradise Lost "Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn" (Nolan, Nolan, The Dark Knight). These men are those which evil protrudes off them like smoke from a fire. In many works evil is manifested with its presence, the villains' goals, their motive, and their strategy to achieving their goal. One big question that one must ask about anything is its beginnings. The same goes for evil. In the Western society, most people associate evil with the Christian Devil. In Paradise Lost by Milton, he displays the inception of evil and the rise of Satan. So the story of the start of this being must be one of violence and betrayal. On the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The best villains have really thought out plans with end goals that justify their sometimes outrageous plans. Iago is one of those villains. Iago's goal is clouded because his reasoning is twisted. Iago starts to let his goal be known when Othello and Desdemona are cuddling up. Iago hopes "set down the pegs that make this music,/As honest as I am" (2,1,198–199). From this point on it is believed that Iago wants to bring Othello down to his level. Iago wants to bring Othello's happiness down to his level of happiness which seems to be none before he started his plan. Another interpretation is Iago could also mean that he wants to brings Othello's relationship with Desdemona down to the same place as Iago's relationship with Emilia. Iago does not trust Emilia because he thinks other men have been in his bed and then he tries to convince Othello of the same. This becomes a very apparent when he names three goals: to be "even'd with him, wife for wife", to " put the Moor/At least into a jealousy so strong/That judgment cannot cure" and to "Make the Moor thank me, love me and reward me" (2,1,295–304). It seems that Iago is making up reasons for himself to get back at Othello and justify his goal. Based Othello's character he does not seem like the man to have relations with a married woman especially not one of his soldiers. It is also ironic that Iago wants puts a jealousy in about Cassio when it is jealousy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Essay about Don John is a Credible Villain Don John is a Credible Villain Don John is a believable villain because he is a bastard which means that in Elizabethan times Don John would have been seen as evil. Don John's legitimate brother on the other hand is wealthy and well respected by everyone. Don John hates Claudio because Claudio has taken his position as Don Pedro's right hand man. Don John even acknowledges his own evil and he also shows no mercy. Don John's character doesn't alter throughout the play, meaning he is only there to cause trouble. Don John dislikes Don Pedro because Don John is the illegitimate brother, a bastard child. This means that he isn't recognised by the court of Messina or by anyone. Although Don John is of royal blood, his royal blood would've ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the men went to war, Claudio proved himself to Don Pedro. Claudio took the position away from Don John as Don Pedro's right hand man. This much to Don John's displeasure, he says to Conrade "He has all the glories of my overthrow". This means that Claudio is now best friends with Don Pedro and being called a hero by Don Pedro. A characteristic of a credible villain is a motive for their evilness, Don John's is he is jealous of Claudio's relationship with his brother. Don John tries to ruin Claudio's happiness by claming Hero has been unfaithful. Don John also has henchmen, which is another characteristic of a villain. Nowadays, it is hard to understand why it is so horrific that Hero isn't a virgin(but she was). But in those times being a virgin until marriage was a huge thing. Hero would have been cast out of court and it would have been the end of her life. Although some women would have gone off to be nuns. Don John, knowing what would happen to her; carries out his plan to ruin Hero's life anyway in order to hurt Claudio. The fact that Don John shows no mercy , is more evidence that he is a credible villain. Don John does not let his emotions get the better of him. Don John is aware of his own evil, he says to Conrade "let it be known that I am a plain dealing villain". Some could argue that Don John isn't plain dealing because he is devious. • 3. Lord Of The Flies Character Analysis Lord of the Flies Essay William Golding was an author in the 20th century who wrote many great books including Lord of the Flies. In Lord of the Flies there are many characters that start off good and smart but as the book goes on, many characters turn into freaks and maniacs. This paper will list off three characters Jack, Roger, and Ralph, and how the changed for the worse as time went on in the novel. One of the characters is Jack, he starts off in the book looking like the bad guy as he always counter–arguments Ralph and makes fun of Piggy. Jack, while mean, was a normal kid that didn't seem to bad, but he wanted to kill a pig and he found one in the first chapter, but he looked at it holding up his knife but he didn't strike it down. He felt bad about seeing the flesh and skin rip open, blood pouring down its throat of a living creature, this is shown how he kept pretending that he was tough when he came up with an excuse "I was choosing a place" said Jack, he said that over and over. After that, he swore to kill the next pig and he did, showing no mercy. Roger is a character that is portrayed as the all bad, although at the beginning even though he wasn't the nicest, he wasn't evil. Roger saw the littuns playing on the beach, making sandcastles and having a great time, until Roger came running through stomping all over the sandcastles and crushing them. One of the littuns, Henry, was walking through the forest, with Roger secretly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Is Shakespeare A Hero Or A Villain Research Paper Valorous morrow to thee, 8F As you probably know, Shakespeare was a playwright who has written many stories and poems. And in these he has created a number of fascinating characters, including villains. When reading a story, people tend to identify the hero. In fact, it is the villain who makes the story exciting! But has anyone ever thought about how a story would go without the villain? For example, what would the story of Cinderella be without the ever–present evil of Cinderella's wicked stepmother and stepsisters? Shakespeare has created a great number of female and male heros and villains. Characters like; Portia and Shylock to Claudio and Don John. These opposing character bring their stories together. One of Shakespeare's most famous villains would be Iago from Othello, who persuades Othello to murder his wife. Then there's Richard the III who was both the protagonist and major villain of the play who was deformed in body and twisted in the mind. He tried everything and murdered everyone that got in the way of him and the throne. He was self–centred, sadistic and corrupt. One of Shakespeare's most famous characters is a female villain called Lady MacBeth who was an ambitious women seeking power and control of others. She even urged her husband to kill the king to seize the crown. Many of Shakespeare's villains seem to have some sort of role in seizing power and being in control. Many of the best theatrical moments ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, MacBeth was a man of ambition. • 5. Playdoh: Superheroes Or Super Villains? A super villain is defined as the antithesis of a superhero, and are generally embedded into a plot to foil the actions of a superhero during the climax of a story. Superheroes possess powers that are exceptional to any power or ability a human could normally achieve. Likewise, a supervillain must dominate special powers, abilities and apparatus to pose a threat to superheroes. While the superhero continuously tries to better society, the supervillain refutes their attempts in order to inflict destruction and dismay. Typically, their motives are derived from traumatic incidents that occurred in the early onset of their lives (Gullo 2016). Albeit for some, no traumatic past or bad accidents were inflicted on the lives of these villainous creatures, as their motive comes from passion, experience, and a drive for chaos. It was hard for most to understand why Playdoh had become so vile and gruesome. From a small town in Soviet Russia, he always held somber thoughts and obscure motives to wreak havoc and mayhem across the town. Playdoh envisioned himself as dominating the world, although all knew it was a difficult ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite his attempts to destroy the world and cause distress to an entire state, let alone an entire nation, Playdoh was ultimately unsuccessful in his venture through being a villain. From taking hostage of civilians touring the statue of liberty to taking over a flight on American Airlines, Playdoh could never achieve the goals that he set for himself as his plans were constantly foiled and never went as planned. This news would be consolidated to most, but to Playdoh, it would just motivate him to seek for success and make further attempts to overthrow the government, gain control of the Northern population, and pave way back to Soviet Russia where he wished to become the ... • 8. Similarities Between Othello And The Crucible The antagonists of a story are usually not the ones critically acclaimed. Due to our human inclination it's fairly relevant that, as readers, more of an emotional attachment is built with the protagonists. However, in spite of that, villains still deserve our attention. From taking a close look at a few villains and the methods in which they manipulate, parallels in strategy are prevalent. A few examples of antagonists that particularly stand out are: Iago from the tragedy Othello written by William Shakespeare, Roger Chillingworth from the novel The Scarlet Letter written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Abigail Williams from Arthur Miller's novel The Crucible, these characters all use isolation to manipulate others throughout the stories. Iago time and time again paves the way to be in the right place at the right time to produce exactly the outcome that he wants. • 9. TO WHAT EXTENT DOES SHAKESPEARE PRESENT MACBETH AS A VILLAIN? TO WHAT EXTENT DOES SHAKESPEARE PRESENT MACBETH AS A VILLAIN? Shakespeare presents Macbeth more extensively as a villain using methods which would be more understood in the era the play was composed, which was the Jacobean period, but influenced by the reign of Elizabeth. During the Elizabethan period people were preoccupied with the supernatural, which is one of the main topics in Shakespeare's play. In my opinion Shakespeare structures the play to make the audience see Macbeth transforming from a hero into a villain, we can also see how Macbeth's character transfigures from a valiant, noble soldier to a deceitful traitor. Shakespeare exhibits Macbeth as being heroic both at the prelude and the climax of the play by portraying him as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The letter triggers the series of evil acts committed by the Macbeths, which starts with the killing of Duncan as a result of Lady Macbeth's manipulative ambition. Lady Macbeth acts as a catalyst to make Macbeth's transition happen faster because she starts to become manipulative as soon as she hears the witches' prophecies: "All hail Macbeth that shalt be King hereafter." The prophecy comes from the supernatural aspect of the play: the witches and Lady Macbeth is indirectly persuaded by the witches to manipulate Macbeth in this matter. The reason for her manipulating Macbeth is her own ambition to become queen, which in ways is stronger than Macbeth's. This is actually shown by Macbeth in his speech in Act 1 Scene 7: "Nothing but males," here Macbeth is stating that he knows how much time and effort Lady Macbeth has put into the planning of the regicide and he will go through with it. In my opinion the quote shows that Lady Macbeth has got more ambition than Macbeth because she is the one that has planned the entire plot and she is the one who keeps trying to manipulate Macbeth into killing Duncan. At this point in the play the Jacobean audience would have started having suspicions about Macbeth because of his dealings with the supernatural, which was considered evil and wrong; ... It happened to me. When I was a freshman I was 14 years old, I had just lost my uncle, very traumatically, a few months prior. But he's not the loss i'm talking about. A few months after he died, I got ditched by my friends. Right before finals. They had a history of ditching there friend, how do I know this, because I did it to someone with them. In 8th grade we started out as the unbreakable group of friends. We spent as much time together as we could. It was the friendship I always wanted. Until it wasn't. Soon we started getting annoyed with Molly. Eventually we ended the friendship. The worst and most devastating way possible. We quit talking to her. Of course we thought she was the bad guy and she thought we were the bad guys. We never really had a major blow up, there was no gigantic dramatic fight in front of the whole school like you see in the movies. Just hurt feelings on each side. We had enormous amounts of detest for each other. Our relationship ended around the middle of 8th grade. After that Hailey and I grew incredibly close. She was my absolute best friend. • 12. A True Hero In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies A true hero is not the one in the spotlight afraid of what the people will think about his actions a true hero stands and proclaims for what is right although people may despise him for his/her actions. The heros of real life are usually the one that people think are considered over the top and usually end up being ignored while people agree with a person who says the same thing but only slightly less over the top. William Golding saw this and have incorporated into his novel Lord of the Flies. Due to the recurring pattern of the hero being the protagonist people automatically assumes the protagonist to be the hero, although he/she may not be the hero, but rather a support character as shown in the novel Lord of the Flies. The definition of a hero is a person who struggles against evil for what is right. In most literature the villain embodies the evil that the hero is struggling against. The hero most often is the person who is struggling against. In the beginning of the book Jack clearly did not enjoy Piggy's presence as is proven when Jack snapped at Piggy when he was telling them the names of the boy around them. Jack was originally alright with Ralph but he never liked Piggy. From the beginning of the book this is is already setting up the classic format of having the villain mark the hero as the enemy at the beginning. Jack was not only against Piggy for the beginning of the book "'I got the conch–" Jack turned fiercely "You shut up!'" (42) this show that Piggy is still struggling against Jack the villain of the novel trying to withhold Piggy form speaking reason to the people of the island. Jack is not only insulting him, but he has malicious intents towards Piggy. "He took a step, and able at last to hit someone, stuck his fist into Piggy's stomach"(75) Jack could of chose to lash out at Ralph but instead he went towards Piggy because although he and Ralph may bump heads they are still friends but Piggy is his enemy. Iago, seeking his revenge against Othello, uses characters such as Desdemona, the wife of Othello, Roderigo, a man deeply in love with Desdemona, Emilia, the wife of Iago, and Michael Cassio, current lieutenant, as tools in his plot for his revenge. A person's culture, family, friends, experiences, and environment can be a big influence on defining what success is to that individual. We all hear the stories of people failing and failing until one day they make it to the top, beat the bad guy or pass the trial. The story can also go that they got all they desired or raised up from the ashes. All of these have one thing in common, it is at the end of the story. It's never the beginning or middle. It's always at the end of the story that the person succeeds in their quest. But why does it have to be at the end? Simply, like how there is no good without evil. You can not have succeed without struggling and failing first. My philosophy of success is simply being content with your life. To me personality, I still do not know what contentment is to me and that's fine. I can guess it is being independent, with a job I am passionate about and surrounded by people that truly care about me. Success is finding that point in life that, if things stayed like how they are at this moment then it would be alright. • 21. Shakespeare As A Villain In William Shakespeare's Romeo... William Shakespeare's play, 'Romeo and Juliet' is wrought with tragedy. Like most tragedies, 'Romeo and Juliet' too has a villain, or rather villains. However, what is different perhaps is that Shakespeare's villains themselves are victims of entrenched social prejudices. Tybalt and Lords Capulet and Montague may be seen as tragic characters who were driven into villainy by a family feud. Juliet's cousin Tybalt, is one of the most villainous characters in 'Romeo and Juliet' as he is the cause of multiple adversities such as Mercutio's death and Romeo's banishment. Tybalt is belligerent and quarrelsome and constantly picks fights and adds fuel to the fire that is the feud between the Capulets and Montagues. This occurs throughout the play. For example, when Tybalt makes his first appearance he incites the fight between the servants of the two houses, contrasting to Benvolio's fleeting attempts to keep peace. Such hostility and antagonism causes the deaths of Mercutio and Tybalt himself, as well as Romeo's banishment. This is shown when Tybalt proclaims "I am for you," challenging Mercutio to a fight as he draws his sword. Thus leading to the downfall of the two surly characters. These events are the stepping stones that lead to the tragedy of the star crossed lovers' deaths. Had it not been for Tybalt's inimical ways, the main tragedies of 'Romeo and Juliet' would not have occurred. This makes Tybalt one of the most villainous characters in the play. Lord Capulet and Montague's immature persistence to keep the feud between the families alive is the cause for several tragedies in the play. Arguably, the saddest element in 'Romeo and Juliet' is the human created obstacle which prevents the union of two young lovers. The only hurdle in their love's path is the approval of the Lords Capulet and Montague. Despite Lord Capulet stating, "My will to her consent is but a part," when informing Paris of Juliet's free will, he forbids Juliet from declining Paris' proposal. Lord Capulet's violent reaction to hearing Juliet's true wishes forces Romeo and Juliet to despair and they are forced to great lengths to be with each other. This ends in their eventual demise. • 24. Othello, The Duchess Of Malfi, And Paradise Lost Elizabeth Andrews May 9, 2015 Professor Earley Final: Long Essay While reading Othello, The Duchess of Malfi, and Paradise Lost there is a noticeable theme throughout all of them. Throughout each of the three works there is at least one character that is considered to be a villain. A villain is a cruel character whose evil actions and motives are important to the main plot of the story. The three characters that are considered to be villains include: Iago from Othello, Bosola from The Duchess of Malfi, and Satan from Paradise Lost. In the play, Othello, written by William Shakespeare, the character that shows the most characteristics of a villain is Iago. The downfall of Othello is caused by Iago who is a manipulative liar. Iago is the main villain of the story and manipulates Othello and most of the other characters. Iago's manipulative personality allows him to advance in his evil scheme leading to Othello's downfall. • 26. OFF, by Mortis Ghost What truly makes a 'villain' to us? Is it the need to cause mayhem, a long, resounding evil laugh? Or just someone whose values run in opposition to ours? Whatever the case may be, we perceive these characters carefully, recognizing them almost instantly as forces to be reckoned with– That is, most of the time. In the next few paragraphs I aim to explore why what the most frightening of villains terrify us the most. Mortis Ghost's 'OFF', a french RPG from 2007, will be our setting for this phenomenal antagonist. This indie game features a delightful soundtrack, strategic turn–based combat, and an increasingly dark storyline. The adventure begins with you, the player, being assigned to control a stoic hero known as 'The Batter'. If he expressed emotions, he would be probably be indifferent to your being his puppeteer. Regardless, you and he proceed through a land called Zone 0, entrusted by some unknown force with the task of 'purifying' the land. You encounter a stray, eloquent and articulate cat calling itself 'The Judge'. It assists you in getting oriented in the world, and guides you safety through the deserted landscape and to the cusp of the first inhabited zone, Zone 1. It departs, promising to see you again. • 27. Evil In Frankenstein In many works of literature, some characters are driven by lust, power, hatred, acknowledgement, and greed. Such motivations can be either used to harness good or evil. The composition of an extraordinary villain can bring frustration, suspense, and create a love– hate relationship with the audience. Consequently, a remarkable villain is a crucial aspect of the plot. The villain is a deciding factor as to whether the plot of the story will be compelling or not. A description of a bad guy according to Agnes Repplier, "A villain must be a thing of power, handled with delicacy and grace. The first plan she executes is to ask Oswald, her servant to behave in a rude manner to King Lear and his knights to ignite a dispute. The second move she devises is to reduce King Lear's knights " This man hath good counsel. A hundred knights" ( I, iv, 340). Sphinx was apologetic that he couldn't hang out, saying that his goal was to be a film director, and he worked two jobs and attended NYU film school. When David got in the cab to go to the hotel, Sphinx asked him what he should say to Lia. David could only reply that he should tell her whatever he felt was best. A few minutes after he was in his room, Sphinx texted, saying he'd told Lia that David was at the airport on his way back to London, adding that even if she learned the truth in the next day or two, he felt it was best if she believed that tonight. • 29. Madness In Lady Macbeth Many plays written in the Elizabethan era test humanity, gender roles, and address madness. In William Shakespeare's Macbeth, the play does not fail to include these ideas and many more. Lady Macbeth is a very complicated character who exploits her villainous characteristics and uses literary references to manipulate Macbeth into doing evil acts. With the thought of power in mind, Lady Macbeth digs deep into her soul "unsexing" herself, asking the devil to release himself onto her to do whatever it takes to ultimately gain the power of the throne. Throughout the play, Shakespeare uses Lady Macbeth to exemplify the madness associated with power and the acts it takes to achieve such things. Lady Macbeth shows how power can make someone question themselves and their morals when they desperately want something. The first impression of Lady Macbeth is her villainy, asking the devil to shed her remorse and humanly feelings and femininity: "come, you spirits/ That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here,/ And fill me from the crown to the toe topful/ of direst cruelty. Make thick my blood./ Stop up th'access and passage to remorse..." (I.v.47–51). • 30. The Superhero Of Superhero Movies Superhero movies have been on the rise lately. These movies are often looked at as entertainment for people who play Dungeons and Dragons and are simply mindless pleasure; however, this is not the case. The reason behind the popularity of superhero movies is more than just the want of the common comic book reader. The superhero movie industry has made a sharp incline in popularity; in fact there are more superhero movies now than ever before. A website called Fights, Tights and Movie Nights listed all of the superhero movies made since the 1980's by year and these were their findings. In the 1980's an average of three to four super movies came out a year. In the 1990's these movies were made on average five to six times per year. In the 2000's the movies doubled to 12–13 produced on average each year. Today, 2010's, the average number of superhero movies has again doubled in size with it now resting at twenty–two to twenty–three superhero movies made on average each year. The drastic increase of the number of superhero movies leaves the average movie attendee wondering why they are seeing this spike of superhero movies. The increase of superhero movies can be contributed to a few key factors: the advances of technology in the movie industry, the movie genre's adaption to be socially relevant, and the characters now possessing more humanistic qualities (Fights...). Or is it simply a person who has done wrong in general? Many argue that a villain is "Yes" to all these questions but I believe otherwise. I believe that a villain is not just someone who has done wrong, or acted immorally, but someone who has done those things without reason. The more we think about it, the more we see how unlikely these crimes apply to reality and how much they evade us from the truth of the villain world. In Cormac McCarthy's book No Country for Old Men, there is a hitman named Anton Chigurh who is hired to take back the money that Llewellyn Moss took. He is described as a cold and calculated killer who will do anything to get the job done. Even though Anton Chighur kills, steals, and works for a drug gang, he possesses principles, skills, and values that are not present in even the good characters of the story. Anton Chigurh should not be labelled as a true antagonist of the story but as the necessary evil, a hired gun, or a mercenary. Readers and writers can benefit from Chigurh by recognizing his drive and commitment and the realize that the bad guys can win as well in stories and in real life. Anton Chigurh would literally take a bullet for somebody and risk his own neck to get the job done. If Chigurh focused on a more noble or positive goal, he could have benefited the world. Readers can even learn about motivation and drive from Chigur which is desperately needed in today's time. The reason why I see Anton Chigurh as a positive influence is because he is driven, motivated, and gets his job done. In today's time, people are not motivated or driven to do something. • 38. Hamlet's Frustration Essay Hamlet's Frustration In order to understand Hamlet, we must understand his frustration. This frustration is most clear in his famous monologue, famously beginning with the line "Oh what a rogue and peasant slave am I." This self–condemnation is contrasted by his admiration for the actor of the previous scene, who "in a fiction" is able to "force his soul to his own conceit." The word "soul" is an example of metonymy, as the soul represents the actor's "visage," "tears," "distraction," and "voice." Thus Hamlet equates "soul" with one's actions, so by his own comparison his soul is weak, as he does not take action against the king. The second sentence is furthermore a rhetorical question, beginning with, "Is it notŠ" So clearly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead of being "pregnant" Hamlet instead admits he can say "nothing." Ironically, the same word was used earlier to describe the actor's cause ("for nothing,/for Hecuba"). Hamlet thus feels completely impotent in his situation, like a "slave." He rhetorically asks himself, "Am I a coward?" From cowardice, humiliation results, as Hamlet in his mind's eye is being taunted by Claudius, who is calling him a "villain." The word villain is especially ironic, since clearly Claudius is the villain, the murderer, and also since a villain is often meant to mean the antagonist of a play. Thus in a sense it is Hamlet who is the antagonist of the play, working against his noble instincts. Then Hamlet describes what Claudius does to him, metaphorically breaking his "pate across," and plucking out his "beard," to blow it in his "face." These images of humiliation make one imagine a slave master belittling his slave or an abusive parent scolding his child. Then he decides he deserves this humiliation, saying "swounds, I should take it" since he is "pigeon–livered and lack[s] gall." This is in violent contrast to what Hamlet would do or "should" have done: "fatted all the region kites with the slave's offal," which is what Hamlet feels Claudius deserves. Whether it's power, jealousy, or loneliness, one can be or become evil from the sole reason of a matter that is uncontrollable or a resentment towards other beings. In the play King Lear written by William Shakespeare, Edmund, the illegitimate son of Gloucester had taken a turn for the worst as his insecurity of being a "bastard" began to interfere with the relationship between his father and his brother Edgar. As Edmunds manipulative nature unfolds, the deceiving power he holds amongst his family, jealousy of unfair rule, and the insecurity of being an illegitimate child has intermixed into the source of Edmunds villainy. One's motive to intentionally disrupt others from normality can be acquired from a variety of reasons such as being dissatisfied with one's position. Edmunds source of dissatisfaction is derived from the jealousy of Gloucester's illegitimate son also known as his brother Edgar. Edmunds jealousy can be seen from the start as he is confused why only Edgar can take the next heir of the throne. For example, "...Well then, Legitimate Edgar, I must have your land.
