Directed by Fede Alvarez, Evil Dead was released on 8th of March 2013
The producers involved were Bruce Campbell, Robert Tapert and Sam Raimi
The running time in the movie is 92 minutes
The budget for the movie was 17 million, they then went on to making
$97,542,952 from the box office
The opening of this movie starts with a black screen. Then immediately the title ‘EVIL DEAD’
appears with a non-diegetic clash sound, this introduces the opening of the movie to the
audience; giving thematic suggestions hinting at a dramatic story line. Just by the manner in
which the combination of the title and sound is presented it is clear that this is a Thriller movie.
Also the colour scheme of dark red and black evokes connotations of death and negativity.
Also, the forest in the background of the writing reveals to us the stereotypical sense of
abandonment which is a common theme in Thriller movies.
In this scene, we can see a close up of stairs with what looks to be blood. This could give the audience a
sense that somebody has just died and the blood drooping down steps could connote that there closer to
more deaths. As that is happening, there is a crescendo where we hear dramatic, loud music which adds
that scary effect to the opening. Up to this point in the
opening, the colours presented are only black and red
which represents the cynicism in this movie.
There is a quick change in shots at one point in the opening. I think this was purposely
put in to add intensity and drama. Furthermore, because the shots are quite dark and
are extreme close ups, we cannot see exactly what the shots are, I think the director
purposely made that happen. This is to confuse the audience straight away and the
only thing we can actually identify is blood which could foreshadow strange things will
happen with everyone being subconscious about it.
The visuals are increasing in time with the sound which also increases the intensity, this builds
up the tension for the viewers. We also see flashing images, this becomes an enigma code for
the audience as we are unable to identify what is on the screen, it draws the audience in by
wanting to resolve the enigma code. Towards the end of the opening we see fire be introduced
in the shots, fire flames connotes rage and fierceness and Alvarez included that possibly to say
these things are involved in the movie.
