7. Looking back at your preliminary
task, what do you feel you have learnt
in the progression from it to the full
product?
In the progression between doing the preliminary task, I have become more
accustomed to be able to think about the decisions I make about what to
include and how I would justify these choices with how it would attract the
audience and how it would be similar to other magazine conventions.
Especially learning how to integrate these aspects into the magazine while
keeping it to the genre and making it look professional and not clustered.
Something else, I have learnt regarding the design of the magazine is the
importance of the aspects of the image adds to the overall product from the
models poses to what costumes they wear.
In the choices of the fonts and text used it has changed drastically as we
began to construct the magazine as it was important in all aspects of the
magazine to be able to fit together nicely and also, fit our genre of which is
why we downloaded other fonts. This allowed to find unique and fonts more
suited to magazine instead of using those that come on the software. The
final product of the main task contains more in a way of depth and
conventions whereas, the preliminary had very little in a way of text only a
mast head, a date line and a cover line. The text would not be very effective
when it came to attracting a potential readership whereas, the taglines, eye
catching cover-lines to enable to appeal to readers.
I learnt about the importance of the images chosen and where they are suitable to be placed on the
magazine also, the impact the photo has on the design and the effect it has on how it is brought
everything together. The reason the decision to use a photo with a plain background which opens
up the choices for the overall design and can use wider range of colours.
Another, big improvement regarding image choices is the image quality has improved immensely as
the school shoot was rushed as were unorganised in planning a proper photoshoot as a result it was
low quality where as, the maintask photos were planned out before: models, outfits and location to
allow the time to be use productively. We came in with ideas of what we wanted the photos to look
like which made it easier to communicate with the models to ensure our ideas we’re made but we
also, allowed the models to have an input so, we could get the best photos possible.
We took a variety of shoots to enable us to have a wide choice in images we could include of which
we didn’t achieve in the preliminary as we had very little choice of photos to choice.
The development of idea when it came to designing the magazine was by looking at
other music magazines and analysing different details to be able to see what went well
also, what I could potentially apply to my magazine. My analytical skills has improved
greatly since doing the preliminary tasks as I am now able to provide an more depth
analysis on why the magazine has been designed this way and what aspects where
used to fit the genre and attract readers.
Throughout doing the main task I have been conscious about improving my photoshop
skills of which I have been asking for guidance from people who have a lot of
knowledge in terms of editing photos and been able to take their advice and learnt
how to use certain tools. This enabled me to experiment more within the design of the
magazine and be able to make sure the photo is to the best it can be.
Overall, I have been able to develop a better I idea on what a professional magazine
contains and why certain conventions are used to attract a readership.
I have learnt the importance in being able to work and making sure all members each do
their part to ensure everything is done also, not just one member doing all the work. I
took the reigns within the theme of the magazine with designing the cover and contents
mocks and the other member of group took charge of the double page spread of which
we distributed the other work between us ensuring we got everything done.
