In what ways does my media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real media
product?
Evaluation 1:
Comparison to other magazines!
• This is an example of a
Billboard Front Cover and I
used the same colour
background but made it
lighter. I chose this colour as
my target audience is aimed
to girls ages 13-20.
• On my front cover I wrote
most of the text on the left
hand side as my model was
on the right. I kept this from
billboard magazine and made
the name of my singer larger
and in a different font like this
picture.
• I used only two different
colour fonts because if there
were to many colours it would
be very busy and distracting.
• The writing above the title I
moved to directly next to the
title as it was my slogan
(selling point).
• In this picture they do not
have a barcode therefore I
kept with normal conventions
of a magazine and added it in
the bottom left hand corner.
• On the right side of singer
there is a circle shape with
writing about the chart music
and this makes the audience
want to buy and read this
magazine.
• I made my own star shape
and wrote about my interview
with the singer on my front
cover in bold cover so it will
stand out.
• I think my masthead is not a
conventional pop magazine name.
• Pop magazines with young audiences
either have a name with the word pop in
it and have more than one word e.g.
‘Top of the Pops’
‘We love Pop’
• This makes my pop magazine stand out
compared to other pop magazines and
sounds more grown up.
• I sent my photo to the back and had all
my text over the photo because my pop
magazine isn't very well known yet.
Billboard magazine have there photo
overlapping the title because it is very
significant and popular magazine.
• On my front cover at the last minute I
added hearts surrounding the writing
because on most of the magazines they
either have stars and hearts on it.
• I think pop magazines for kids have too
much going on therefore I tried
combining the billboard layout which is
simpler with the top of the pops
information on it.
• I added a pink coloured shape behind the bottom part of writing because
on the two pictures above they use different coloured shapes but I think
they look over the top.
• I added the date, issue number, website and price on my front cover.
However not all magazines add all of this information.
• I made my front cover on Pic Monkey and chose the font
called Budmo Jiggler .I chose to make the font bold to
make it big and stand out on my front cover.
• On pop front covers they keep the same font and Budmo
Jiggler looks like small spotlights and gives a clear vibe of
pop.
• I used Lobster Two as most of my text down the left hand
side because it is very girly and the font chose is different
to pop magazine examples.
• Amatic small Caps was used for my issue number and date
because the font looks like someone's hand writing which
gives a fun vibe.• My slogan is…
‘Making Pop the new POP-ular! Because recently pop
magazines have got less and less popular with the age group
13-20 because people don't think its cool to read them.
• I have tried to make my magazine up to date with pop
culture including new singers and bands and gossip about
celebrities to entice the audience to read my magazine and
think it is interesting.
• We love Pop magazines slogan is
‘Don't bore us, get to the chorus 'this suggests the magazine is
Contents Page Inspiration
• I used the same font for my
contents page title and to make it
non- conventional to other pop
magazines I adjusted it to the
side which is very eye catching.
• I chose to 'Inside this
Month…’because in pop magazines
I researched they wrote ‘Inside
this mag. I use slang because it is
a very laid back magazine.
• I thought I was being original
when writing this as a sub-
heading but in ‘we love pop’ they
write this.
• To make it different to this
magazine I moved it to the top of
the page, therefore its easy to
read.
• I changed the colour of the page
numbers because in the two
examples it looks effective than
all of it in one colour.
• I used pastel coloured rectangles
behind the text because this is the
summer edition of my magazine
and these colours are popular at
• I chose 4 photos to put down the
right hand side and I added a
polaroid frame around each of
them because it is on trend and
pop magazines have to keep up to
date with everything!
• I added small pink hearts down
the edge of the right hand side
because it looked bare and in pop
magazines they use a lot of hearts
to decorate the page.
• I only have 4 pieces of text on the
page which isn't a lot compared to
the examples. I added a orange
star with information on to entice
the reader to read on to these
specific pages.
• I kept the same colour
background as I wanted to keep
the same theme all the way
through my magazine. I think a
white background with black font
is too harsh for a pop magazine.
• If I added more stickers, phots
and text on to my contents page
Double Page Spread
Inspiration
• For my DPS I didn't want to just copy another pop
magazine but I wanted to take different elements
from each magazine combine them together to get
an effective double page spread.
• In pop magazines they either write an article or
interview and I chose an interview because you can
get to know the celebrity proper instead of
assuming facts and opinions in an article.
• In this article with Union J I like the change in font
colour between the question and answer because it
is a clear difference and makes it easier to read.
• I also used a coloured shape behind my text to
make it stand out.
• I like the layout of the DPS of Justin Bieber because
the 3 photos in a line down the left side with a
white border.
• Because it looks like a photo booth strip of photos
and gives a retro vibe to the magazine.
• There is a large quotation from the interview and
this makes the audience want to read the
interview.
• On the DPS about Pixie Lott I like the change in
colour of text, the same as the Union J interview.
• They use a polaroid frame around one of the
photos and this is a very on trend of showing
photos.
• Also they have different shaped circles with text on
which looks really interesting and look like speech
