Evaluation Question 6:
What have I learnt about Technologies from the Process of
Constructing this Product?
The Internet
Throughout this experience I have used the internet a lot to complete my blog and help me throughout
my magazine. I have used it in my magazine for dafont, which gave me my barcode for my music
magazine and my fonts. I have used the internet for ideas for my music magazine as well. The main
reason I have used the internet however is for my blog posts, such as this one. I have used different
presentation methods such as Prezi, Emaze, Slides and more to present my blog posts. With these
online presentation methods I was able to answer blog questions in an exciting and unique way.
Before this course I did not know they existed, and without them I would have not completed any of
the tasks set. I have also used Storyboardthat, Photosnack, Online Calendars, VoiceThread and
Pinterest to complete my blog posts in an interesting way. Pinterest helped me massively in finding
who my target audience would be. Survey Monkey was also used to reach my target audience and find
out what they wanted to see in a magazine - this helped me enormously.
InDesign
I used InDesign when making my Double Page Spread for my music magazine. InDesign
was the perfect tool for creating a DPS because it allowed you to easily make columns
for text by dragging the text box to where you want it and pressing the left arrow for how
many columns you want. InDesign also allowed my to insert images and quotes in the
middle of these columns and after wrapping the text in line with the image/quote it would
look like a proper news article. In addition to this InDesign allowed my to add a
background picture - such as my main image of ‘Keevap’ in a high resolution. This made
my magazine look realistic and of a good quality which will massively help in selling the
magazine.
Blogging
Throughout my Preliminary Tasks, Research and Planning, The Construction of my
Magazine and my Evaluation I have put them all onto my blog at heathen media. This has
helped me because it has allowed my assessor see what I have completed. If the post
was an online post, e.g. a Slides presentation, when I had finished the presentation I
would get the embed code from the ‘Share’ section and add it to the text section of the
new blog post. Additionally this has helped me because it has kept all my work in one
location so I can go back and tweak it or find it if I need too.
Lighting and Studio Experience
When taking photos of my models at the end of last year/begging of this year I used the
new studio and it was a good experience. I had to place my model in the centre of the set
- the set was a light bluey/grey background with massive lights opposite it that focused
on the middle of the set. This is where I placed my model. The studio was a fun part of
the Planning process and actively allowed me to perfect my magazine. The lighting
allowed me to take clear pictures of my models, which were perfect for my magazine.
The Camera
The camera was a big learning point. I have not had much experience with high tech
cameras, but after I was showed how to use it I got some clear quality snaps of my
models. I managed to take very clear close-ups, mid shots and long shots which
massively improved the look of my magazine because it made it look professional.
Without the Camera I would not have been able to get a proper magazine look as it would
have looked unfocused and of poor quality if taken with my phone for example. I learned
how to zoom the camera in and out, look back at photo’s, use the flash and focus on the
model. I also learned that you may have to move to different angles to get the model in
with the screen. As my first model, Will, was tall, I had to alter myself a lot to fit him in the
frame.
Photoshop
Photoshop was the biggest learning curve for me. I have learnt masses of amounts about this tool
and it has done wonders for me. From the beginning of the new term last year I was shown basics
such as how to cut out images with the lasso tool, how to select and deselect (pressing Command A
to select and Command D to deselect) how to make images black & white and more. This hugely
helped me when editing pictures for my magazine. I had always had in my head that I wanted my front
cover black and white because I thought this was the most effective look for a FC, so after editing my
models face - by zooming in and using the heal tool to get rid of any spots or blemishes - I then
changed the exposure, contrast and brightness to get the photo exactly how I wanted it and then
turned it black and white and I finally had the perfect image for my front cover. The whole of my Front
Cover was created on Photoshop. Photoshop allowed me to create my perfect Masthead as I could
change settings of the font such as turn on the Contour, Emboss, Inner & Outer Glow to make my
Masthead even more unique and stylish, which was exactly what I hoped to achieve.
