A Critique of the Proposed National Education Policy Reform
Evaluation Question 2
1. How effective is the combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?
For our main task we were asked to create a horror
trailer, but we were also asked to create a magazine
front cover and film poster to advertise the trailer. The
trailer would be the main product we had to create but
the film poster and magazine front cover would go hand
in hand with the trailer.
2. In our group we wanted to take the photos for the film
poster and magazine front cover first because we thought
that it would be easier to have the photos ready for when
we were going create the film poster and magazine front
cover. We were able to take the photos for both the
products in one day, which was lucky for us, but on that
day it was very cold and windy which made it hard for our
actresses to stay still for the photograph. In the photos we
used all of the girls who were going to be featured in our
trailer, but we kept the main girl (Aisha) in the middle for
both photos. The girls outfits for the photos were thought
out very carefully because we wanted them to wear
glamorous dress because it shows that they are the
popular girls in the school, but the expressions that they
had went against the glamour’s looks because they had
very serious facial expression.
3. These facial expressions make the audience curious about what
they have done in the past but it makes the audience
uncomfortable because the girls are looking directly at you
addressing you personally. To add the element of horror on the
photos, we applied mud to the arms, chest and face, this was
where it was more visible to the audience and this links to the
trailer because they have got muddy from hiding the big secret.
This is very effective within trailer because we waned it to look like
it belonged with the film so we added elements which would also
been seen in the trailer and magazine front cover. As a group we
wanted the film poster to present what had happened in the past
and this is linked to the secret that the girls are hiding. We were
able to do this by the idea behind the photo for our film
poster, because we had the girls look into a box, which we revealed
just the edges so it was made to look like the girls were looking into
a grave. This a big clue we had given to audience to help them
figure out what the girls might have done in the past. This idea
went very well with our main product the trailer because at the
beginning of the trailer we explained what the girls had done by
including a scene where the girls are burying a dead body.
4. We wanted to carry a link from the film poster through to the
magazine front cover. We decided that we wanted the girls to be
wearing the same dresses because they were important for them to
be looking glamorous and iconic. The reason why it is iconic is
because although they look glamorous they are hiding a big secret,
and the dresses are some sort of distraction from what they have
done. This shows that looks can be deceiving and you sometimes
have to be carful with certain people. This was a clever way of
distracting the audience from the main secret and because the girls
are the victims they can also be seen as the villains. They look like
the unlikely villains because of the way they look but the outfits and
expressions can be seen as masks hiding the identity of their dark
side. On the front cover we have included a filmstrip, which allowed
us to place photos from the trailer and behind the scene photo shot.
This went very well with the trailer because the magazine gave the
audience behind the scene photos, which will only be seen in the
magazine. Both the film poster and magazine front cover
complemented the trailer because we have created a very good film
poster, which advertises the trailer well, and also because the poster
doesn’t tell the audience too much, they will become intrigued to
find out what it is about. The tag line used in the film poster gives
the audience a small clue what the trailer is about. The tag line we
used was ‘the truth will never stay buried’ this informs the audience
that the trailer is created around the idea that if you keep a secret it
will never stay buried and it will always be brought to the surface.
Overall I think that the film poster and magazine front cover work
very well with the trailer because we have displayed links all
throughout because we wanted the audience to know that it belongs
to the film ‘Twisted’. We were able to create the links by the choice
of clothes and also the by the text. We had to be careful with our tag
line because we didn’t want to give too much away because at the
end of our film we have a big twist, which the audience wouldn’t
expect. The narrative shows that just one event in your life can
change you from being good to bad and in a way because of what
the girls have done in the past shows that they have a twisted
personality, linking to the name of the film.
