• Question 1. In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
Cover
The icon from my model gives a personal feel to my cover. It
does this through eye contact (even with the glasses) this then
connects with a potential reader well, which may push them to
buying the magazine. The idea of eye contact on a cover is a
well known convention, however when I looked through past
NME I knew the sort of design I wanted for my cover, I
developed it from there. I did not try to challenge the
conventions because I felt for myself and my magazine it was
better to stick to the usual, this way I can have something to
look to for help for example NME.
EYE CONTACT
THE POSE
The pose is simple, this is good because it does
not over complicate my cover. It also gives it a
professional feel. However as well as being
simple it allows me to fill the needed
convention for an main cover image. This
image also shows how I’ve stuck to the
conventions of a music magazine because they
are looking straight towards the camera. The
image also fills the whole page like most other
magazines do. Again from looking at this NME
I managed to reconstructed the pose aswell as
adding some of my own features, I did this by
having my model look dead on camera with
enough facial expression to catch the readers
eye without overcomplicating it by having a
overdramatic pose.
The masthead, it fills the conventions of a magazine because it is
the main piece of text on the page and it is clear to see and read. I
have stuck with convention and put it n the top left side of the
page. It is usually put there for sales purposes as it is the spot that
is mostly likely to be visible a large amount of time. I think it is
clear that my name stemmed from NME as they were my main
influence throughout. However I feel my magazine has its on feel
to it.
MASTHEAD
HEADLINER
The headline, the other main text on most covers.
My headliner sticks to the conventional headliner
as it talks about the main feature in the magazine.
In this case mine is about an artist known as
George, this mirrors NME’s as theirs is about
Damon (lead singer of Blur). I did not try to stray
away from the conventional headliner it would
contrast too much with the rest of my magazine, I
felt it worked well as a headline for my main article
and professional.
COVERLINES
For my cover lines I decided to include details of what
else will be featured in the magazine. I did this because
if a potential buyer were to see someone they loved
featured in an article then they would want to buy it,
instead of just seeing the main feature whom they may
not like that much. I still conformed to conventions by
doing this as a lot of other magazines have done the
same thing. I presume their reason for doing it was the
same as mine, to add a further selling point besides the
main featured article. In terms of challenging the
conventions of normal cover lines I did not tend to
challenge them, I felt that having a normal cover line
would still give my magazine the appeal it needs.
CONTENTS
DEVELOPEMENT
CONTENTS HEADLINE
My headline for my contents page is fairly straightforward, I
liked the look of the Q magazine style and decided it would
look nice on my contents. I placed it on the middle of my
page, it is a convention to have it in this spot or the left hand
side. It is clear to read as it is the biggest piece of text on the
page so it stands out. However just because it is the biggest
piece of text on the page does not mean it takes over the page,
it fits nicely but does not take away from anything else on the
page. Under the DME logo you can I have given it an issue
date, this adds a professional feel. As well as that I added
‘different music experience’ I did this to explain what the
magazine was about, it is about different music, different from
the rest of the magazines on the market which sets it apart
from others.
COLUMNS
Columns are an important convention in a
contents page, they make everyone look neat
and organized which then makes it easier for the
reader to understand read. When making my
columns I felt it was necessary to have a clear
font so it was, again, clear to read. I did not
stray to far away from the conventional
columns, I wanted them to look as Q’s does as
that really appealed to me when designing my
contents page.
PHOTO
When I was planning my contents page in
my head I already had an idea of what I
wanted and that was a big image whereas
Q’s had a few smaller images. I think my
image works well in my contents because
the image stands out and drags focus
which is really what I wanted as it
emphasizes the main article in my
magazine which is what I wanted. I could
say I have challenged the conventions of
contents pages in terms of most of them
have smaller images but I don’t think I
could say it does that it challenges it
massively as it still looks like a
mainstream contents page.
ARTICLE
PHOTO
When taking my photo I decided to
stick to conventions and have the photo
covering one side and the article on the
other side. However unlike the article
on the right I chose not to do a close up
shot. This is because fashion and style
are a main aspect of the social group I
am aiming my magazine at. This meant
a long shot would fit better to show the
fashion of my model. Also I tried to
slightly challenge conventions as my
photo was not taken in a studio. I took
it outside, which is not unusual it just
goes against conventions slightly but I
felt it worked well.
ARTICLE
My article is very much
conventional, takes up an A4 page,
with a pull quote in the middle and
my writing centered around it. My
title is big and easy to read.
COVERLINE
Kept it short and simple letting
the reader know the basic sense
of the article they are going to
read. It is a convention to have
this and it makes my article look
more professional.
TEXT
I laid out my text in a way I
thought looked professional, I
did this by spacing my text out
by using three columns and
adding the pull quote in the
middle. I think the faded peace
sign in the background adds
another effect which feel works
well and looks good.
CHALLENGING
CONVENTIONS
When I developed my ideas for
magazine I already knew I did not
want to try and challenge
conventions, this is because there was
already a section of the market for my
magazine style. This meant to fit in
that area I had to stick with what was
popular in order to sell copies.

In this case mine is about an artist known as George, this mirrors NME’s as theirs is about Damon (lead singer of Blur). I did not try to stray away from the conventional headliner it would contrast too much with the rest of my magazine, I felt it worked well as a headline for my main article and professional.
  • 8. COVERLINES For my cover lines I decided to include details of what else will be featured in the magazine. I presume their reason for doing it was the same as mine, to add a further selling point besides the main featured article. I placed it on the middle of my page, it is a convention to have it in this spot or the left hand side. It is clear to read as it is the biggest piece of text on the page so it stands out. However just because it is the biggest piece of text on the page does not mean it takes over the page, it fits nicely but does not take away from anything else on the page. Under the DME logo you can I have given it an issue date, this adds a professional feel. As well as that I added ‘different music experience’ I did this to explain what the magazine was about, it is about different music, different from the rest of the magazines on the market which sets it apart from others.

  • 16. ARTICLE My article is very much conventional, takes up an A4 page, with a pull quote in the middle and my writing centered around it. My title is big and easy to read.
  • 17. COVERLINE Kept it short and simple letting the reader know the basic sense of the article they are going to read. It is a convention to have this and it makes my article look more professional.
  • 18. TEXT I laid out my text in a way I thought looked professional, I did this by spacing my text out by using three columns and adding the pull quote in the middle. I think the faded peace sign in the background adds another effect which feel works well and looks good.
  • 19. CHALLENGING CONVENTIONS When I developed my ideas for magazine I already knew I did not want to try and challenge conventions, this is because there was already a section of the market for my magazine style. This meant to fit in that area I had to stick with what was popular in order to sell copies.
