How did research and planning
inform your production?
We designed a story board to help us decide on each shot and the type of camera angles
that were going to be included, as well as where about the shot would be taken. This helped
us a lot as when it came to filming our music video we knew exactly what shots needed to be
completed. Here are some example comparisons of the story board and my final shots.
To start off our research we put together a quick mind map of representations to pop
music videos. This helped us gain an idea of what we needed to include with our own
music video as our chosen genre was pop and we wanted it to fit well within the specific
genre. We always related back to this when adding in something new to the whole
process making sure we were staying on the right track and that it would fit in well with
the pop genre.
Whilst looking into intertextuality and connecting it with my productions I looked into detail on
the three of the different links between media platforms. These were homage, parody and
pastiche, including these within my music video, I thought my music fitted the best with
homage. Homage is the definition where respect is shown The reason I thought this is this
because it is not a copy in any way. Our music video was created by inspiration however turned
out to be very original. This allowed us to describe our ideas and the reason behind each one
and to also see what the audiences views and opinions were towards our video.
For out location choices we decided to use the train station and studio. The reason for
why we chose a train station because it links it with the lyrics of the song also it is a
quiet place to help the audience understand the story, we originally wanted to use a
busy town however it may have became confusing and too much going off for the
audience to understand. Our second location was the studio we used this for the
performance side of the video for example when he plays the guitar, this allows us to
break the video up and a different place of scenery.
Our first idea for the costume designs was to dress our characters in a general day to day
outfit, with a slightly smart look as they were both travelling to work everyday. We chose a
season of autumn so we used colours for the clothing based around this season. We showed
the characters in different outfits to represent different days however they were similar
types of design and choice. An example of clothing would be a casual dress with tights,
boots, scarf and a coat. Due to the outfits being so similar to each other this may not have
been clear towards the audience so in addition we could of maybe added in a few more
days and outfit changes to make this more understandable.
For the use of costume and prop within our music video we wanted to keep it very basic
and general. To show that both of the characters were on their way to work we used such
as folders, bags, newspapers and flasks as we thought this would be the kind of objects a
general person would carry on their morning to work. We thought this was a successful
way to get that message across to the audience. Whilst during the performance side of the
music video we took inspiration from other music artists as they are generally shown
preforming with a musical instrument or a microphone so we decided to use a guitar on
the main character as he sang into the camera.
