Introducing the main
protagonist
U In my film I introduced my main
protagonist through the use of an
establishing shot. Where the audience
establish the setting and the main
character of the film.
Music – the music we
used develops the
mood, tone and
creates atmosphere
within the film
D The music we chose for our film, was
chosen to create mood and atmosphere.
The music creates sympathy. The music
starts after the title, to create enigma at
the beginning of the film.
Titles are a key
convention within the
film opening to
introduce key people
within the making of
the film, and also
reminds the audience
that, it is the opening.
U The titles within my film are in the
conventional order of most film openings.
The titles come in slowly in a bold white
colour to make it easy for the audience to
read.
 In the film openings we have watched and studied, they all include a clear title
sequence which introduces people behind the making of the film. In my film we
used ‘London to Brighton’ as a template for the ordering of our titles.

 We initially decided that we wanted to create our own music for our opening sequence however, after research
and detailed analysis of other film openings we decided that a song that would appeal and be recognized by
our target audience would be more successful. We wanted to use music that would create an atmosphere and
mood for our film for example the Kill Bill music creates suspense and a sinister atmosphere.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
The use of a young female
protagonist appeals to our
target audience and
represents the youth
social group which we
aimed for our film to
appeal too.
The use of the people in
and around the scene are
to reflect the diversity of
inner London, and the
business to symbolise her
emotions and personal
feelings.
Her youthfulness causes
her to stand out from the
crowd. Her facial
expressions reflect her
confusion and sadness .
The main social
group our film
opening
represents would
be young people
living in and
around large
cities. We do this
though using a
young girl, to
dress with an
urban edge
astatically look like
a normal young
girl.
‘Reduce the use of Class A drugs and the frequent use of any illicit drug by all young people under
the age of 25, especially by the most vulnerable groups’
(Tackling Drugs, Changing Lives, Home Office 2004a, 20)
We wanted so simply show
a vulnerable young girl
under influence of Class A
drugs.
When looking at
specific types of
Class A drug use in
the past year, it is
estimated that just
over 350 thousand
young people took
cocaine powder and
just over 250
thousand took
ecstasy.
We wanted to
representone of
many people
effected by drug
misuse in recent
years.
What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
 Why?
 Adistribution company that focuses on real life issues that Britain goes through on daily basis.
Picking apart and choosing a base for a film would have to pull in an audience though the use
of shocking imagery and a harsh plot. The company’s films need too raise awareness
andshould be created in order to send out a clear message. A distribution companythat is a lot
smaller than the mainstream companiesis good as its better in achieving a sense of
independence. The film wouldn’t be shown within a multiplex, again another advantage in
finding the particular audience that we want, people that are genuinely interested with
physiological thrillers and smaller independent films.
Who?
Who would be the audience for your media product?
 I want my film to appeal to the older teens, living within large towns and city with large drug
issues. The film is purposely created to send out a clear message to people living around
drug use to alert them of the dangers. Using a young girl as our main protagonist instantly
makes it appeal to the younger audience, but also appeals to parents.
TARGET
AUDIENCE. Young people living in
areas with a large amount
of drug crime.
Young people who hang
around in gangs.
Parents who want to understand the
youth and drug use age within urban
areas.
How did you attract/address your audience?
 Using Camden town as our location attracted our audience as many of them recognized it
immediately. Which captured their interest and made them want to continue watching.
Using a young person within the film also attracted our young audience. The music
appealed to the young audience as it has an urban edge.
What have you learnt about technologies from the
process of constructing your own product?
 Firstly I have learnt about the vast editing techniques you can use on one program. I have
become familiar with Final cut express, been able to add titles, music and change the
speed of the music and the pace of the film. All of which we learnt by experimenting with
the software and slowly becoming more and more familiar. Syncing the music and the titles
was a lot easier to do using Final Cut express and allowed us to play around with the titles,
the size, speed and colour of them.
Looking back at the preliminary task, what do you feel
you have learnt in the progression from it to the full
product?
 Throughout the task you are constantly learning new things, editing, camera shots, general
film making knowledge and planning. Looking back at the task one thing I have learnt is
the importance of planning. With better planning that I have produced I would expect our
film to be of a higher standard. That is not to say I am not incredibly proud of my film, as I
have learnt so many other things through the task, for example, using equipment, filming in
the right lights, editing and cutting, overall learning about the process of film making. I have
also learnt about the importance of a target audience, and believe that if our target
audience was not clear we would have no basis for our film.
