Opening title sequence
How I got the idea;
Watching the title sequence of London to Brighton directed by Paul Andrew Williams,
The first shot makes the audience question what has happened, why it has happened and what is
the relationship between them? The scene is finished by the older women shutting her eyes.
We are then presented with a black screen which then has the title of the film ‘London to
Brighton’ this opening title sequence is a non linear, as it throws the audience into the midst of
action and doesn’t show us what happened to them and also doesn’t introduce the characters
roles within the play, so the audience is left questioning them and wanting to find out more.
I choose this film opening, as I wanted my film to have the same effect so that the audience is
unaware of the story at the beginning so they are intrigued and want them to find out more. With
my opening title sequence it is a non linear, as it throws the audience into the midst of action and
doesn’t tell us the story to it, as it will be revealed as the story progresses.
In the title sequence of London to Brighton they use
a black screen with writing on which says the place
and time I wanted to do that in my title sequence
so that why in this shot we show how many hours.
My title sequence
In my title sequence its starts of non linear to engage the audience after
30 seconds we then see us watching a young girl on a suburb street, this
shows a contrast between the two settings. In these pictures you can tell
the is a clear contrast between the images as two of them are set in a
tight space, where as the other two images are set in a open space.
Forms of convention Uses, developed or
challenges
How I have addressed this in my film
opening
Evidence
At the opening of the film it
introduces audience to characters
U I have only introduced one character in my
opening as she is the main character who plays
two roles within the film, both of these roles are
shown in the film opening
The setting D I have two settings in my film opening as it’s a
non linear narrative, so I have a scary setting as
my beginning scene as it intrigues the audience
and lets them get to the route of the action. My
first setting is shot in a dark and damp cold
cellar. It then goes to a different a setting, which
is in daylight so you can tell it’s a different time
of day and also how it has a different
atmosphere.
Genre and what mood is created U My film is a horror, you can tell this from the
opening scene as it has scary music and the
effects I use walking down the stairs create and
daunting effect. The atmosphere in the room
shows that it is a horror film as most horror
films contain a dark cold room where the main
events take place. It sets a daunting mood for the
audience as they are put out of place as they are
feeling anxious and scared, this helps set the
genre.
Narrative D My film opening is told in a non-linear structure,
I done this so it gets the audience strait into the
film and grabs their attention. So this creates a
disequilibrium effect so lets the audience know
that everything is not okay, it then goes to a
equilibrium effect, this means it goes back to
where everything is okay (i.e Todorov’s
narrative theory), most horror films are the other
way round but I wanted to engage my audience
right at the beginning. It then also allows the
film to progress and explain the cause of what
happened and the beginning so as the film goes
on it unfolds.
How does your media product represented
particular social groups?
In my opening sequence you only see one character, she is a teenage
girl from a upper class family. The wide shots of her walking to the house,
this shot establishes the neighbor hood, as you see a clear image of the
houses and street. Also the way he is dressed shows she’s a teenager as
she’s wearing a hoodie and tracksuit bottoms,
this gives her the ultimate teenage stereotype.
Also her dialogue enhances her young age
with the slang she uses and the way her script
Is written. My opening shows a crucifix on
the evil spirit, I have used a close up shot of this,
as this shows that she comes from a catholic
background, and the fact that she is wearing it in both shots of her in her
normal spirit, and her evil spirit shows there is a clear representation of
ethnicity as it is showed in both of the scenes.
What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
The media institution I used was Columbia pictures and Metro Goldwyn
Mayer pictures, I chose these distribution companies as they specialize
in horror movies, even though they are a American company, I feel they
are the best to distribute my movie as they are a big company so are
able to distribute my film all over the world as they have the funding to
do so. They distributed the film ‘Halloween’ by Dimension Films in 2007
only in the USA. When I was watching ‘Halloween’ I felt it had a
correlation between itself and my film, as my film and ‘Halloween’ share
the same daunting music when scary events are occurring.
Who would be the audience for your media
product?
My media product is aimed at both female and male audiences
aged 15 and above. I would say that it attracts horror fanatics, as
it’s a horror film. I believe it is suited to all social classes as the
characters in my film all come from different backgrounds. I
wanted a wide range of audiences so I'm not limiting my
audiences, so I then I am able to get more viewers.
How did you attract your audience?
I attracted my audience by having teenage characters so my target audience
can relate to them. Also as my film is non linear I throw my audience into the
action right at the beginning as I want to get them intrigued and wanting to
watch more. When it goes to the bedroom scene, everything is calm and
relaxed, until she hears noises and then that’s when the audience is then
shocked again as you see the freighting image of the face from the scene
before.
As my film is targeted at horror fanatics at ages 15 and above, I really wanted
to shock them nearer to the beginning, as it most horror films such as
‘paranormal activity’ they tend to long out the horrifying and shocking
moments, by just giving you a big build up then go into the action. I wanted to
have the shocking
moment at the beginning so the audience
was not expecting it. Also by bringing in well
known characters into the film, it grabs
that characters fans to watch it, as they are
starring in it.
The preliminary task
In my continuity I used a lot of close up shots to catch the characters facial
expressions, so the audience is able to see how they are feeling. I also used a
wide shot at the beginning, this enables you to see where the character is
and establishes the scene.
I also learnt about the 180° that you only film from one side throughout the
sequence. It also helped me expand my knowledge on different camera
shots and angles.

Daisy pledger evaluation

  • 2. Opening title sequence How I got the idea; Watching the title sequence of London to Brighton directed by Paul Andrew Williams, The first shot makes the audience question what has happened, why it has happened and what is the relationship between them? The scene is finished by the older women shutting her eyes. We are then presented with a black screen which then has the title of the film ‘London to Brighton’ this opening title sequence is a non linear, as it throws the audience into the midst of action and doesn’t show us what happened to them and also doesn’t introduce the characters roles within the play, so the audience is left questioning them and wanting to find out more. I choose this film opening, as I wanted my film to have the same effect so that the audience is unaware of the story at the beginning so they are intrigued and want them to find out more. With my opening title sequence it is a non linear, as it throws the audience into the midst of action and doesn’t tell us the story to it, as it will be revealed as the story progresses. In the title sequence of London to Brighton they use a black screen with writing on which says the place and time I wanted to do that in my title sequence so that why in this shot we show how many hours.
  • 3. My title sequence In my title sequence its starts of non linear to engage the audience after 30 seconds we then see us watching a young girl on a suburb street, this shows a contrast between the two settings. In these pictures you can tell the is a clear contrast between the images as two of them are set in a tight space, where as the other two images are set in a open space.
  • 4. Forms of convention Uses, developed or challenges How I have addressed this in my film opening Evidence At the opening of the film it introduces audience to characters U I have only introduced one character in my opening as she is the main character who plays two roles within the film, both of these roles are shown in the film opening The setting D I have two settings in my film opening as it’s a non linear narrative, so I have a scary setting as my beginning scene as it intrigues the audience and lets them get to the route of the action. My first setting is shot in a dark and damp cold cellar. It then goes to a different a setting, which is in daylight so you can tell it’s a different time of day and also how it has a different atmosphere. Genre and what mood is created U My film is a horror, you can tell this from the opening scene as it has scary music and the effects I use walking down the stairs create and daunting effect. The atmosphere in the room shows that it is a horror film as most horror films contain a dark cold room where the main events take place. It sets a daunting mood for the audience as they are put out of place as they are feeling anxious and scared, this helps set the genre. Narrative D My film opening is told in a non-linear structure, I done this so it gets the audience strait into the film and grabs their attention. So this creates a disequilibrium effect so lets the audience know that everything is not okay, it then goes to a equilibrium effect, this means it goes back to where everything is okay (i.e Todorov’s narrative theory), most horror films are the other way round but I wanted to engage my audience right at the beginning. It then also allows the film to progress and explain the cause of what happened and the beginning so as the film goes on it unfolds.
  • 5. How does your media product represented particular social groups? In my opening sequence you only see one character, she is a teenage girl from a upper class family. The wide shots of her walking to the house, this shot establishes the neighbor hood, as you see a clear image of the houses and street. Also the way he is dressed shows she’s a teenager as she’s wearing a hoodie and tracksuit bottoms, this gives her the ultimate teenage stereotype. Also her dialogue enhances her young age with the slang she uses and the way her script Is written. My opening shows a crucifix on the evil spirit, I have used a close up shot of this, as this shows that she comes from a catholic background, and the fact that she is wearing it in both shots of her in her normal spirit, and her evil spirit shows there is a clear representation of ethnicity as it is showed in both of the scenes.
  • 6. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? The media institution I used was Columbia pictures and Metro Goldwyn Mayer pictures, I chose these distribution companies as they specialize in horror movies, even though they are a American company, I feel they are the best to distribute my movie as they are a big company so are able to distribute my film all over the world as they have the funding to do so. They distributed the film ‘Halloween’ by Dimension Films in 2007 only in the USA. When I was watching ‘Halloween’ I felt it had a correlation between itself and my film, as my film and ‘Halloween’ share the same daunting music when scary events are occurring.
  • 7. Who would be the audience for your media product? My media product is aimed at both female and male audiences aged 15 and above. I would say that it attracts horror fanatics, as it’s a horror film. I believe it is suited to all social classes as the characters in my film all come from different backgrounds. I wanted a wide range of audiences so I'm not limiting my audiences, so I then I am able to get more viewers.
  • 8. How did you attract your audience? I attracted my audience by having teenage characters so my target audience can relate to them. Also as my film is non linear I throw my audience into the action right at the beginning as I want to get them intrigued and wanting to watch more. When it goes to the bedroom scene, everything is calm and relaxed, until she hears noises and then that’s when the audience is then shocked again as you see the freighting image of the face from the scene before. As my film is targeted at horror fanatics at ages 15 and above, I really wanted to shock them nearer to the beginning, as it most horror films such as ‘paranormal activity’ they tend to long out the horrifying and shocking moments, by just giving you a big build up then go into the action. I wanted to have the shocking moment at the beginning so the audience was not expecting it. Also by bringing in well known characters into the film, it grabs that characters fans to watch it, as they are starring in it.
  • 9. The preliminary task In my continuity I used a lot of close up shots to catch the characters facial expressions, so the audience is able to see how they are feeling. I also used a wide shot at the beginning, this enables you to see where the character is and establishes the scene. I also learnt about the 180° that you only film from one side throughout the sequence. It also helped me expand my knowledge on different camera shots and angles.
