Q1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
ConventionsSlow-motion. . .Black & WhiteSlow or FASTpaced editingNon-linearNARRATIVE
Music Video ResearchWe looked at Smashing Pumpkins – Disarm for inspiration of green screen use.The conventions used in this video are very common in the alternative genre.
PropsThis prop used in RHCP – Give it away has a good effect when played in reverse adding to the conventions of non-linear
In our video we have not challenged conventions so that our video was as conventional as possible for the alternative rock genre videos
Alternative Rock genre has vague conventions so if we strayed from them too much it wouldn’t have the feel of an alternative videoQ2)How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? The album cover doesn’t have a set meaning or purpose.
When researching existing album covers I found that most of the covers from bands such as; Radiohead, Red Hot ChiliPeppers and The Smashing Pumpkins. The examples shown to challenge convention in the sense that the album cover doesn’t tend to relate to the band. The main feature that is generally consistent throughout the majority of album covers in the rock genre is either the bands name, the title of the album if it has been heavily publicised (instant name recognition) or a band member on the front if they are a well known or iconic figure .Q3) What have you learned from your audience feedback?Positive FeedbackGood camera work
Black and white fit well with the genre
Good variation of shots
Good use of green screen

Editor's Notes

  • #11 such as the drumming. This tells us that we need to be more careful when editing the clips on Premier. However, we felt we had tried as hard as possible to get the footage in sync with the music, which means that the actual footage would have been off timing slightly when we originally filmed. We know for next time that we have to get everything in time when we are filming, and we can ensure this by filming each take a number of times. However this was because there was no storyline. Our video was inspired by Radiohead-Street Spirit, Smashing Pumpkins- Disarm and Red Hot Chilli Peppers- Give it away now. We chose to focus on the way the video looked (green screen and editing) rather than having a narrative. We took inspiration from these artists as they fit into the alternative rock genre, so we needed to use conventions of that genre in our video.
