EVALUATION
Introduction:
For BBC, The Social Connects the requirements which were asked of by the clients
Helen and Amie was to create a short form content video that can be used for digital
platforms and social media, and it needed to be made in the format of 9x16.
The ideas that they are looking for needed to be related to one of the categories
which they had provided:
● Lifestyle
● Sport
● Food
● News
● Storytelling
● Issue
● Challenge
And it should have emphasised my local area, which included using themes which
are unique to the area I am from to help attract the audience's attention to those who
are from the same area I am from.
The client for the brief is The Social, a development platform based in Scotland, and
they help develop new talent from across Scotland. The BBC commission content
ready to be published to the public and the content that they have made reaches
millions of people each week. The target audience of the content that the social
makes is targeted to 18-34 years old, and this platform was made in 2015. The style
in which their videos are made is short form content and the content in which they
develop is youth focused and digital first.
The BBC The Social create their content through a wide variety of genres which
include:
Comedy
Music
Gaming
Life
Issues and more
Their content can be found on a range of different social media platforms:
Instagram
X (twitter)
Facebook
The content that they had asked for needed to be in the style of The Social, which is
authentic ideas that will help engage younger audiences and it needed to be
distinctive enough to stand out in their platform.
It needed to highlight my local area and cover stories which are made in a style that
is energetic and culturally relevant.
PARAGRAPH 1- DECONSTRUCTING AND ANALYSING MY PRODUCTS
For the brief, a short form content video was needed, so that involved making a
visual piece and they had asked for an optional thumbnail which goes with the video
that I needed to make. So, I decided for my ideas that I was going to be making an
audio visual and print piece. However, because this was group work, we had to
collectively produce the ideas together.
Short form content video:
For my postproduction I began by editing my video for the BBC, which was one of
the requirements for this brief, what had made my video much better was that I had
prepared everything beforehand which had included researching the client, short
form content videos and my own ideas on what I wanted my video to be about.
Analysing the short form videos which are from the BBC social connects website
helped me gain a better understanding of what needs to be included in the videos
and the style and format that the client uses. Looking into the key factors on what
makes a short form content video helped with my own ideas and how I can use my
video to help gain a wider audience.
Following my investigation, I had to research my own ideas on what that would be
and how I would achieve that. I decided to go with a subject which is relevant to
Sunderland which was how Lewis Carrol was inspired by Sunderland to make his
‘Alice in Wonderland books.’ To help me produce the ideas I have chosen I made a
mind map jotting down ideas which would be good to use to make a storytelling short
form content video. The mind map also included all the elements on how I will be
making my videos and what will be added in the video, which will be the locations
that are relevant to Lewis Carrol. Also, because I had decided to make a storytelling
video a narration needed to be included. The ideas that I had chosen worked well for
the brief because it links back to my local area, and it is a creative idea which will
help reach a wider audience and I met the client’s requirements.
Before beginning the production of this brief I began to do the pre-production
documents these documents included script, storyboard, flat plan, risk assessment
form, contributor release form, location consent form and filming schedule some of
these documents were required by the BBC although I had done some other pre-
production documents as it helped me prepare for when I went and filmed and also
when I began editing. I had done the storyboard which had broken down each scene
and it included detailed description of camera angles and composition; it made my
filming run more smoothly in an efficient time.
When I went to film everything turned out good, I got all the footage needed and I
managed to go to every location which links back to Alice in Wonderland. I had
followed my storyboard, which was effective because I knew how exactly I was going
to film.
When I began editing, I had made multiple drafts and amends which were feedback
received from my audience that helped me understand on how I could make my
video better and what worked and what didn’t my first draft turned out good although
the narration wasn’t the best because it was recorded using a phone and the clips
didn't go it time with the video itself. Although that problem got fixed because we
collectively worked as a group planning on when to professionally record our audio,
which meant making sure the equipment was available and everyone was in which
was needed to make it work.
After getting all the audio I then could properly edit in an efficient time management
to meet deadlines for the BBC, even though I was making a final video I also wanted
to make drafts to show my development of my skills that I had learned over the other
briefs that I had done. From the feedback that I had gotten recommendation to use
colour grading on my video which I had done using different kinds of colours, this
gave my footage more edge and it sets the visual tone as it helps convey the
emotions of my audience, the different colours I had used for each drafts creates a
specific mood and atmosphere.
I had looked through the footage to see which videos were suitable and made a folder in my
one drive I went with ones that worked out the best to tell the story of Alice in Wonderland an
how Sunderland was an inspiration for the books, the clips that I had chosen for the final
video worked out the best because it told the story the way it was intended to, it had worked
out well and it meets the requirements of the brief and what the client had asked for.
To get to my final video the editing process had taken five drafts which had shown
development and improvement on each one and it included feedback from the audience, this
gave me a better understanding on what my audience liked about them and what they
thought could be better. The video ran smoothly, which ensured excellent quality.
The video also included a narration because I had written a script for the last brief, I had
already understood the codes and conventions needed for a script. To make this work we
needed all the equipment which was an audio recorder and microphone as I had already
used this before I knew how to set it up which made the production run more smoothly in an
efficient time which helped me with editing my video to meet the client's deadline. As a group
we collectively worked together too and did many recording sessions and listened to them to
see which one worked better, also doing more than one helps ensure that no mistakes
occurred and that the sound quality was good. When I decided which recording was the best,
I had went on adobe audition and made sure the sound levels were good and if I needed to
cut anything out which was not needed The narration turned out good and it tells the story
efficiently because it includes everything that seemed necessary to make a short form
content storytelling video.
Print work:
For my postproduction I had also made print work, which was optional, although I
had decided to do it because I thought making a thumbnail would work well with the
video I had edited. What had made my thumbnail better and detailed was the pre-
production documents I had made for this brief which included making a flat plan of
the design that I wanted for my video, which included elements of Alice in
wonderland which linked back to the idea I had chosen for the brief. What had
helped me know what to include on my flat plan was the research that I had done
from the previous brief and because I had made print work for that brief, I had the
experienced skills to make my thumbnail.
When I began editing my thumbnail on photoshop, I had started off by outlining the
flat plan that I had designed. I decided to choose the flat plan that I had drawn
because it was efficient and linked back to my video, using this also would have
helped enhance target audiences. I went through many drafts and i had gotten
feedback through the development of this thumbnail making improvements if
necessary
These show the stages and tools of the development of the thumbnail cover. Using
the flat plan made the editing process run more smoothly in an efficient time for the
BBC deadlines. My thumbnail was consistent and balanced, and it worked for the
client requirements.
My final thumbnail helps set the tone of what the video is about and because it is a
mix of illustrations and colour it makes the cover look more dramatic and bold which
helps outline the details. The product helps gain the audience's attention because it
conveys key details.
Reflect on the stages:
Doing this project what had helped the most was the investigation because it had
helped me produce the ideas on how I was going to make the short form content
video, and analysing short form content videos which was on the client website
helped me understand the codes and conventions needed to make this work
efficiently and what made those formats of videos successful to help target audience
attention. I also researched the client themselves and what the requirements were
for this brief, it helped me understand more about them and helped me reach the
client expectations.
What had also helped the most was the pre-production documents as they helped
me prepare and plan, which made everything run smoothly. It helped me understand
how I was going to be making my products and all the elements needed to make this
successful in an efficient time, I had met the client deadline by preparing everything.
Before doing my final products, I had experimented with drafts which helped me see
which would work the best and I had received detailed feedback to make my
products more better, this helped with the progress and development of my video
and thumbnail and it had helped me with developing my skills by learning what i
needed to improve on from the other brief I had done. The products I had made
looked much more detailed because I had learned those skills from the other brief
which was promo.
The software I had used for this brief was premiere pro, photoshop and adobe
audition because I had already learned to use these software's I was more skilled in
making the products needed for this brief. I already understand the technical tools on
all the software used to edit, which includes how to colour grade my videos to make
them look more creative. I also knew how to match my audio and video on premiere
pro because I had learned how to do this on the previous brief so i was much more
confident when it came to editing my video using the different settings on premiere
pro
For photoshop because I am experienced in this, I know how to use a lot of the tools
to make my print work more detailed and professional. Also the thumbnail that I had
made looked creative and matches with the style of what the video was about. I had
shown a distinctive style with my thumbnail which was a mix of illustration and colour
which was used by using the different settings of the brush tool, I had also learned
how to use coloured overlays to make my thumbnail have unique styles by using the
different tools on photoshop.
Adobe audition was a new software that I was introduced to in the previous brief.
This editing software involves editing audio and because narration was included in
this video, learning how to use it and the equipment needed to record audio helped
me a lot because I developed skills, and it helped the recording run more smoothly.
The BBC brief helped with my communication as we had to work in groups, and
teamwork was also involved but it turned out good because communication was
effective to help meet the client's demands. I had taken on feedback well listening to
my target audience's advice because it made my products more developed and
detailed, I responded well to the feedback and made any adjustments to my products
if needed to.
I came quite close to the brief, and I had responded well to the client information
which was given about what short form content they would like to see. I had made
my products which were relevant using the right elements needed to make my video
successful and used the correct codes and conventions about what a short form
content video needed to be.
I had learned a lot from the brief using the skills I had learned to make these
products the most professional and creative they could be. I will be continuing using
the skills that I have learned that include using the different editing software. What I
would do differently for this brief is add more videos in and use different camera
angles to make my video look more distinctive and I would change the order of the
clips of the video.
