1. DeathRace Evaluation
Introduction
The task for the project was to create a title sequence to a sci-
fi horror tv drama aimed at a teenage audience for BBC Three
or E4. We had to get into pairs and plan the process get
details about where we going to film, who was going to be in
the film, what the costume were going to be like. And then
creating the script and then thinking about shots and editing
and the roles which we would do and then finally go out and
film the project and then upload and edit.
2. 1) Comparison with real media
products
The idea we had was to have a normal everyday characters in east
London that would fall into a normal crowd and not show that they
are different in any different way. The costume was just normal
clothing and very basic styles to avoid any brand name image
rights.
3. The props were the gun that the Baron would give to Mils this
is a Laser guided BB gun we took the laser of to make it look
like a normal pistol and making sure that is no pellets in the
gun as well to make sure no one was injured and also that
people were aware of the dangers of the gun. We also had
Mattis’s phone, Paper and a packet of cigarettes to make it
4. The location for the filming was in the media rooms and in the
black room because we thought a dark area would make it
look more believable and also it would give the idea that this
was a good way to show that the room colour matches the
Baron’s personality. we also filmed in the cleaners room this
was the setting for the basement we wanted this because it’s
isolated and really small and the random furniture makes it
look like a basement which was perfect for filming
5. The effects were used at the end when Fetch and Tyron Grab
Mils and shot him when Tyron shots Mils the screen shakes to
make it look like the point of view from the gun and it fades
out to the title sequence. We wanted to create the ending of a
project me and Craig did last when the gun was fired it ended
the movie and we thought it worked really well and wanted to
6. For the text I wanted something out of Grand Theft Auto
because the program is set in a sub urban town and has the
violence and feel about the roughness of the area and that
was the main thing about the text that made it look more
7. The program really conveys a feel to a sci-fi horror drama
which was the main idea for Deathrace with the dialogue
being really deep and making feel towards the main
characters even though they are criminals as well which adds
the drama. I think it goes beyond the normal crime drama as
this a different edge as this has zombie’s and the program’s
genre changes from a crime drama to a super natural horror
in the space of a few episodes which I feel can bring in more
viewers if these two genre’s were to merge this would be new
different idea and be very original as well
8. The text font flicked like a bulb to show that the program is a
dark horror and the flickering light shows that the program is
a horror and the viewer will understand this by seeing the
dark background with the flickering text which then smashes
to show that something is going to happen with the show this
is what me and Craig wanted to do give the audience the idea
9. A lot of the work was written down which was a vital part in
making the project it would involve more ideas and a lot of
previous ideas being changed throughout the planning and this
was a great thing because I could expand on the ideas that were
set and then make the best of it be seeing what can be changed
for the better of the program and also if we had old ideas we
could go back and see if they were to fit with the new ideas and
compare and contrast the two to get the best possible idea for
the better of the program
10. the final thing was the actual task itself it was a difficult one but
it was done with very good time and sticking to what we had
planned to do in the first place which was the main thing that
was needed to be done the work was wrote down on production
sheets and timed as well this was important to look back and see
what was said and suggested and this was looked back on for the
final idea before filming it was a very important process and it as
done well the editing was very efficient and Craig did a great job
on the title sequence and editing the footage to something that is
very believable and targeted at a teenage audience.
11. 2) How did you find the
construction process
The work was difficult and also very enjoyable parts of the
project required a lot of time to think about and a lot of it was
changed either filming or not using the part in the project at
all which we thought would work but thinking about it work it
really wouldn’t make sense to the audience if this was the first
episode the part I am talking about is that I put down the idea
of having a zombie in a chamber or on a wall to show that the
baron was planning to take over London with them but Me
and Craig thought it wouldn’t make sense and needed to be
shown in much more greater detail to fully explain which in
the end I was a little disappointed about but we felt that the
12. I enjoyed the planning of the project because when we did are
rough ideas and then choosing the one’s that people thought
would be a good sci-fi drama and then being able to expand
from there and really get a clear idea of what we wanted to do
and being able to talk to each other to see what works and
what we could add that can make the project better and more
clearer to the audience. And also having team meetings to tell
Craig what the idea of the story is going to be set out and how
13. A lot of the time we would change things and then write down
what we had changed and why and a lot of the work was
changed it did make the project a little difficult because
originally we planned to have 9 characters but we felt that it
would be too much hassle and people to fit a room which was
hard to get so many people in there so cut all the characters
that didn’t have dialogue and kept the characters that did. We
also had problems creating the title sequence trying to the get
the sounds In the right place and also creating effects on the
project itself to make fade in to the title sequence which often
14. I think working is easier and better because you can work out who’s
going to do what and then be able to get feedback from them and
also give advice on how things are going to work the downside I
feel though is working in a pair you have to do a lot of work in a
short space of time where as being in a 4 you can spread out the
work and have more time filming or trying to make the whole
project better by having more time to edit or having more available
time to work instead of trying to arrange times with people to see
when they are free and then getting it done in the time period.
15. 3) Legal and Ethical consideration
Legal issuses with Music
During the filming process we had to deal with certain issues about
how we were going to add music and violence without clearance and
how this can be tackled one of the illegal issues was the music I
found a horror type soundtrack on Soundcloud which you was
allowed to download to make sure there is no legal issues the
person was quoted in the credits and also to be aware that it is
being used for the project. This can often lead to sewing if not dealt
16. Ethical Issues
The Ethical issue is about how to avoid legal rights as sometimes if
you use the song and do not ask the artist they can sue the
production company for music rights and lose in a court case which
would result in massive money loss and even possibly pulling the
show because it can be demeaned illegal to show which can also
mean a lose for the tv show as they would have put money into the
development of the program and also they can sue the company for
the money as well. The way to deal with this is to phone the music
company and ask them if they can use the song for the soundtrack
so there is no legal issues. creative commons means now that artist
that allow people to download their track means they have to be
17. 4) Skills Development
Throughout the filming and editing process there was a lot of
skills required and also learning to work on new techniques
that can give the best possible outcome for the film. When we
were filming we used a lot of actions from various positions
called coverage this means the same scene is shot a least four
times or more to show which is the most effective and how it
can change the way the audience view the whole drama
together this was a very important process that me and Craig
18. And also deciding on which shots look the best and create a
tense atmosphere. Also when we were filming we learned how
to use the camera properly and we can make the best out it
using tripods and handheld shots we tried lots of different
ways of making the film again me and Craig had production
19. When editing we used different types of fades towards the end
this was Craig’s editing as he was the editor for the project he
used the pen tool and key motion frame to make the shot look
like the gun was making the camera move and also fading
afterwards to cut to the title sequence he told me about the
process and really gave me new ideas about how to use Final
cut which really impressed me and brought the sequence to
life. This was a massive factor of the whole project because
the editing really made a average film into a work of class and
20. . I was creating the text and the title sequence using Dafont I
could create my own font and make it look more gangster and
East London feel I did the same for the title sequence but the
difference was that I found a text called zombiefied and few
others and then I created a few texts on photoshop and
showed Craig and He chose which one was the most effective
and he chose the Zombiefied text which I felt worked perfectly
creating the text fonts in photoshop and then converting it to
a PNG file so that it can play and edit on Finalcut.
21. When giving the text to Craig’s computer we both jotted down
ideas of what we wanted to do and the one we like the best
was having the text flicker to make it look like it’s a Horror
program which worked really well and collecting a smashing
bulb sound it brought the whole title sequence together and
the audience will know what type of program this is. The title
sequence was really important to us as we want to show the
audience that the title sequence is the indication to the
program and the viewers can take interest in the title
22. 5) Quality of final product
In all I think the project stuck to the original idea we had set
with the odd changing at various times. The product does
fulfil the brief and would defiantly appeal to the target
audience that we were trying to appeal to it has action, Death
and violence but also a great storyline that will keep the
audience interested and drawing in new viewers with word of
mouth from regular viewers. The strong points of the project
is the editing and the title sequence because the footage we
filmed was to the plan but it needed a bit more expanding and
with the editing it really makes it stand out more and the
editing towards the end with Craig making the screen move
around to the gun shot really makes the title sequence work
perfectly with the project. The font of the title sequence I am
very proud about because it really gives it that edge and
works perfectly with the dark background and the flickering
23. The weakness of the project are I feel is the acting it did take a long
time to film the process and it wasn’t great and if there was more time
that would have been the main priority of the remake but with the
editing it helps boost the acting and draws the viewer away from that
which me and Craig thought was important and worked well to the title
sequence. I also feel another weakness was the setting it wasn’t in the
greatest of places and that can make the audience believe that is a very
basic program and not really giving it authenticity to the viewer which I
felt let it down a bit but it was hard trying to find a dark and empty
environment that would make it look like a basement .
24. The final video is very close to the original idea the only make
exception was that we wanted to have a zombie in a cage but
with the room space we felt this was difficult and also it wouldn’t
make a lot sense in how a drug baron has a zombie and how it
came about in a 1 minute opening sequence which in the end we
thought it would be better if it was explained later to give a
clearer understanding.
