- 1. Similar Productions and Potential Distributors (Question: What kind of media institution would distribute your media product and why?)
- 2. Film Four are an independent British Film company. Our group particularly like this company as they have produced several low budget films that have become successful examples of British films such as Trainspotting and Submarine. Trainspotting (1996) is an Indie Comic directed by Danny Boyle and produced by Film Four. The film explores the addiction protagonist Mark Renton tries to battle whilst 14 year old Tommy is clean but is curious to try drugs. Our opening sequence mirrors Trainspotting in several ways. Firstly both products have the themes of drugs, although in our sequence we do not see any substance both have an element of peer pressure. Also in Trainspotting the music is parallel to the actions, we adapted this in to our sequence. Trainspotting was distributed by many international distributors as Film 4 do not have a direct distributor unlike companies such as Working Title who are owned by the US conglomerate Universal.

In Submarine the protagonist Oliver feels pressured by more than one person, he needs to meet his parents expectations, his girlfriend’s expectations of their relationship and “fitting in” in school. Similarly in our White Lies the parents of the protagonist expect the money given to last the two weeks they are away, whilst her friend Imogen pressures her to use that money for something else, although we do not see why in this opening the rest of the sequence insinuates drug use. Also the poster of the movie shows the protagonist’s face half in usual colours and the second half in a blue tint. Furthermore in the film he makes reference to retreating underwater in to a submarine. Blue is a colour associated with melancholy and a similar blue tint can be seen in our sequence at the start in the protagonist’s bedroom. Submarine was distributed in the UK by Optimum Realising(UK) (now known as Studio Canal) plus international distributors.

The task of finding a low budget independent British distributor was quite difficult as in the world of media today the industry is predominately based in Hollywood plus any British companies will be part of a conglomerate in America. One of the few independent distributors I found was Dogwoof. Dogwoof was founded in 2004 by Andy Whittaker and Anna Goode. At first the company primarily focused on foreign films and documentaries however their releases have become diverse as now more of their movies are related with social problems. A percentage of the movies distributed by Dogwoof are often about issues that are ignored and our group feel that peer pressure is often brushed under the carpet, which would make our product ideal to be distributed by Dogwoof plus none of their movies have targeted teenagers meaning that they would be able to reach a new target market.

Diffusion PicturesDue to there not being a company logo nor an article on IMDb I assumed that the company Diffusion Pictures was quashed however there are several reasons that this company would be ideal for distributing White Lies. I and the rest of the group admired this company as they specialise in Indie media especially the music used in their movies was not chart music of the time but music often made my small rock alternative bands (which is the taste of music for our target audience).If the company was still active and our production was to be distributed by them it’d benefit us greatly as the success of their small movies such as Mutual Appreciation proves that they have great knowledge and expertise in the Indie industry.
