How did you use new media
technologies in the construction and
research, planning and evaluation
stages?
By Pauline Kate Baluyut
New media technologies?
 During the first and second world war, scientists and
engineers globally were forced to work together,
which resulted to more efficient and sustainable
technologies being produced.
 This also caused globalisation and the rise of
unprecedented global warming. The images located
on the right clearly shows how technology innovation
and global warming have increased significantly
rapidly starting from the 1800s right to the early
2000s.
 New media technology are tools such as social media
networking sites, videos, pictures, websites, search
engines, computers, TVs and disks that broadcasts
and transfers electronic materials that enable people
internationally to form bonds and links, it is also a
form of technology that allows people to save and
move information around, for example a CD, an app
or a camera.
Examples of new media technologies
Websites/software used
All through the duration of my A2 media coursework I have used new media technologies; these are listed below:
 Mindomo
 Dafont
 Microsoft Paint
 Fotoflexer
 Microsoft Word
 Microsoft Powerpoint
 Adobe Fireworks CS5.1
 YouTube
 Adobe Premiere Pro CS4
 Microsoft Excel
 Blogger
 google
www.google.com (used during research)
Google allowed me to access vital information on the trailers, websites and
magazines I have studied on my blog. It is a search engine which enables people to
search for any topics they like.
Computer
I used the computer during my
research, construction and evaluation.
It was easy to use as I have used it for
years.
www.mindomo.com (used during Planning)
-Mindomo
I used Mindomo to create the mind map in my "evidence of organisation and management
of time, equipment and people" post to show people how I have planned and
organised the actors, filming dates, costume, location and prop use in a quick display.
The Mindomo website allows users, the chance to create their own electronic mindmap,
where videos and audios can be used to improve users' and viewer's experience. It is a
website which comes with a small cost - people can click on the free trial kit, this option
however limits the amount of mind maps and projects produced.
$3.00 = £1.80
$15.00 = £8.98
$8.00 = £4.79
I find that this website is simple, easy
to use and search through, I would
also recommend anyone to use it.
www.Dafont.com (used during construction)
Dafont
Dafont.com was a site I used to create my sophisticated and genuine looking
fonts for our social realism trailer. The site contained a mixture of fonts
exploring different themes such as 'comic', 'horror' and 'western'. The fonts
that we used for the title of our trailer is named 'Skratch punk' and is in the
theme of 'destroy'.
It permits users to download fonts and donate money to its creators.
Microsoft Paint (used during construction)
Microsoft Paint (paint)
I used the paint software to manipulate the barcode on my magazine and to create the
black flashes and the texts on our trailer. I found this application to be straightforward
and trouble-free to use.
Tabs enabled people, to crop, erase, paint/spray over and create shapes.
Fotoflexer.com (used during construction)
FotoFlexer
I found that FotoFlexer was a fun, creative and effortless to use,
website which allowed me to manipulate my photos. One of the
things that attracted me into using FotoFlexer was its slogan "The
world's most advanced online image editor". Another aspect was
its good profile and background. This website has been given
good reviews by different gadget/website critics.
People can edit their photos taken from social media networking
sites, these are:
Photobucket
Myspace
Facebook
Flickr
Picasa
Microsoft word and Microsoft PowerPoint 2010
(construction)
Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word 2010
I used both these software to move my pictures around and to remove the white
background that some of the fonts I used, have. I also used Microsoft word 2010 to
change the colour of the fonts.
Microsoft PowerPoint was released on Tuesday 22 May, 1990. Both software are
usually used by pupils, teachers and company owners to create.
I learned how to remove the white backgrounds of some of the fonts which my
magazine featured, had.
I found that both software were uncomplicated to use, as I already possessed a good
amount of background knowledge and relevant skill of both, PowerPoint and word.
Adobe fireworks CS5.1 (used during
construction)
Adobe fireworks CS5.1
Because I have already used this software before, I didn't find it difficult to use.
On the other hand I do still recall my first few days of using this application - I felt
frustrated trying to work out it's complex system.
I learnt how to add effects
onto photos, such as the
‘burn’ tool which gave
surfaces a dark yellow and
brown tinge when applied
to its surfaces.
This software allows users,
to crop, move re-colour,
add effects, paint over and
manipulate images.
www.youtube.com (used during, pre-
production, production and evaluation)
YouTube
I used YouTube to get the gun shot sound affect and the music (playing with fire) for our
social realism trailer. Overall as a site, it was really easy to use and to navigate through.
The site allows people to upload their own videos, like/comment on a video and also
subscribe to another YouTube user. The videos posted onto this site will allow it to be
viewed internationally. Popular clips will be displayed on the site's homepage.
I learned how to convert the edited
clips from Adobe Premiere CS4 onto
a video creating software which
enabled us to upload our final
edited trailer onto both blogger and
YouTube.
Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 (used during production)
Adobe Premiere Pro CS4
Adobe premiere pro CS4 was the software that I and Mikaela, used to edit the clips and
soundtrack used for our trailer.
This software was complicated to use as I had no practice with it before. Before editing
the clips of our trailer however, we were given a personal tutor to teach us how to use it's
overall configuration, by giving us each a clip which we had to edit and manipulate.
We used this particular software as it score very highly on individual reviews such as the
"trusted reviews" website.
This software is currently and has been used by professionals in the media industry, such
as the BBC.
Microsoft excel (used during pre production)
Microsoft Excel
We used Microsoft excel when we were
constructing both our questionnaire and
audience survey.
As I had already used excel many times in
the past, I found no problem or
complications with the software.
It allowed us to create our very own tables
and graphs.
www.blogger.com
I used blogger to display and present to examiners and the general public my A2 Media
Studies coursework; this is because a blog is part of the new media technology and
web2.0 movement.
Web 2.0 is a level in internet technology that allows individuals to be more virtually
pro-active. Pro-active activities include choosing what to like/share on social media
networking sites (such as Facebook, twitter and instagram).
Blogger is also part of the new media technology movement as it allows people from
different continents to share their ideas and values across the globe with the help of
the fast and ever-changing internet. Blogger is part of Web 2.0, because it lets people
be more pro-active - as individuals are permitted to write/make a blog about anything
they like to explore.
Blogger is part of Google’s apps. Google is an internationally known company which
focuses on the internet.
Equipment used during filming (construction)
Sony Camera DSC-W70
 This camera has settings which users can select
and use such as the 'Twilight portrait', 'snow',
'beach' and the 'soft snap' setting. The 'automatic
flash' option is also available. It has 7.2
megapixels and is a camera which comes with a
hand band (so users can decrease the likelihood
of dropping it onto the floor). It is small, light and
slender which are good aspects to have if users
want to carry it with them the whole day. It also
comes with a padded protector wrap.
Iphone 5
 This device was used as a back up if the Sony
Camera stops working or needs to be put on
charge. It is one of the present day's most advanced
mobile phone.
 It is a really slim and light weight device. It is
smooth and flat which to be honest, allows for a
much greater chance of it slipping from the user's
hand.
 It has an 8 megapixels camera (0.8 megapixels
higher than the Sony camera).
 It allows people to record videos and take photos
with just one touch. Certain apps on its appstore
will allow users to edit both pictures and videos.
 As we ran out of battery one day, we did used this
device as a back up, and so we were able to carry
on filming.
New media technologies during my evaluation
YouTube is a website which allows its users to upload videos onto its site so that it could be instantly shared, promoted
and viewed around the world. This makes it a new media technology because it transfers information to different people.
It promotes my subsidiary texts and main product, free of charge. I used this new media technology along with powtoons
on my answer to question two of the evaluation questions. Powtoon helped me to easily create a presentation with slide
animations and music to aid with the visual and audio quality.
I used a handheld camera and my blog to answer question three of my evaluation questions. The handheld camera
permitted me to record my target audience’s reactions and their views on my trailer.
During my first and last evaluation question, I used slideshare. It is an easy to use website, which allows me and others to
share personal slides to audiences around the world, about any chosen topic(s).
