“Oh GOSH! Reflecting on Hackteria's Collaborative Practices in a Global Do-It...
Evaluation 3
1. EVALUATION 3:
HOW DID YOUR PRODUCTION
SKILLS DEVELOP THROUGHOUT
THIS PROJECT?
Ali Al Qayed
Candidate No. 2019
2. TIME MANAGEMENT
When we had first started our AS Media Studies project, I
had really underestimated how much time we had on our
hands to complete our work, which made us rush towards the
end, although we had finished with the film itself, we still had
other coursework contents to cover.
If i was able to go back and re-do the project i would have
spent far less time on the initial planning stages of our film
because the three of us wanted to work on each of the tasks
collectively, but instead someone should have taken the lead
and delegated jobs that each of us were responsible for
rather than rushing everything towards the end of the due
date.
3. Another issue that we come across was that we
couldn't reshoot scenes in the post production stage
due to us taking mandatory COVID-19 precautions
and quarantining when needed.
At present the government has imposed a phased
lockdown on the country affecting us in the doing.
TIME MANAGEMENT
4. We had spent a total of 3 to 4 months of planning the
film itself after 4 different complete drafts with
different scripts and storyboards.
We also had to plan out the cast list and other
components such as costumes and me being the
editor of our film, I had to plan everything that was in
the editing process of the film such as software to
edit the film.
PLANNING
5. ❏ The final location we had chosen had been a very run down medical
centre which had been abandoned for years, which was not really safe.
❏ Considering that the ceilings were falling in, shattered glass everywhere
and medical supplies found on the floors.
❏ Another issue we had stumbled across was that here in Qatar there are
very strict laws regarding filming in certain locations such as an
abandoned building.
❏ Filming there also put us at risk us getting in trouble with the authorities
since it would be considered trespassing since the area is or used to be
private property.
SAFETY AT LOCATIONS
6. ❏ At first we really needed an appropriate editing software, I
went through softwares such as Action!, Bandicam and OBS
Studio but none were within our expertise.
❏ We decided to use iMovie which was on my IPad, on our
Director Macbook Pro, and on our cameraman’s Desktop PC
which was really helpful when it came to the editing process.
❏ Since it included all the features I needed as an editor and
producer. Although, it did not include any functions to improve
the audio quality of our film which resulted in us using the
software “Filmora”.
EDITING DIFFICULTIES
7. ❏ We really underestimated how hard it would be to film, it wasn’t as simple
as we had first thought!
❏ We had a total of 83 junk scenes which we had re-filmed mostly because
of distractions within the cast or the time of day which didn’t lend well for
lighting, to faults in the device we had used to record (Gimble).
❏ Also due to the state of the location, it had included a lot of dust
everywhere meaning that it would appear onto the filmed images which
resulted in us re-filming that entire scene.
❏ One of the weekends that we had planned to re-shoot the interrogation
scene and the protagonist is held captive but then a bad sand storm hit
Doha and halted our production.
FILMING AND RETAKES
8. SOUND QUALITY
From preliminary research to the final product my production skills
improved a lot when it came to matching the sounds to the pictures
on screen. At first we had used the software iMovie which didn't
really include any functions to help us improve the audio quality of
our opening sequence which had resulted in us seeking alternatives
and using the free application called “Filmora”.
Another issue I had come across as the editor of our film was the
issue we had regarding the zipping sound not synced to the images
on screen, this is because the director and myself had emailed the
clip between each other multiple times meaning that he quality of the
film decreased over time.
9. • Upon reflection, I really could have improved the quality of
my work if we had taken it a lot seriously at the beginning of
the course and we should've planned everything out earlier
on to counteract the hassle we had encountered towards the
end where we had to rush a lot of our work
• I could have also improved on the time management and
practiced on different editing techniques before editing the
film, since it was all new to us.
REFLECTION ON THE PROCESS
