Research
• With music videos being popular for multiple decades now I
felt as though there was a good selection of talented videos
for me to analyse. With there being a wide range, I decided
to stick to music videos for songs of a similar genre. I made
sure I looked into detail of camera angles, set design and the
similarities between each video to create a theme to base
my video off. Each small detail shown amongst the videos
helps me grasp an idea of what the audience enjoy and
would expect from my video.
• I talk about the visual effects in Tubthumping, these small
effects really add to the quality of the video although seem
un noticeable. Both Tubthumping and Stacey’s Mom include
a storyline / setting relating to the lyrics, Tubthumping being
filmed in a pub alongside the lyrics ‘he drinks a whiskey
drink, he drinks a vodka drink…’ and with Stacey’s Mom has
a young boy at a girls house admiring ‘Stacey’s mom’. Simple
effective things like these I wanted to take inspiration from.
• I focused on the camera angles from Walkin’ On The Sun,
after watching a few smashmouth music videos I began to
see a style of filming / editing I personally enjoyed, I also
knew the audience enjoyed it as FILL IN so therefor proved
effective for a successful music video.
Research
• I looked into art styles that I liked and thought would work for my
album cover. When searching for album covers I couldn’t find many
similar to the style I wanted to go for, this was a gamble as there’s
no research to show if it works with the target audience. Once I
began in production I realised I could’ve done with researching into
album covers more, even if the art style wasn’t what I was wanting
to create, so I look into layouts / fonts.
• To better improve for future projects I believe I could have also
benefited from researching videos that haven’t done so well
amongst views / ratings, this would have helped me learn what
styles and techniques to avoid.
Research
• I conducted a short questionnaire and got data from people from a range of
ages. I felt it was necessary to branch outside of students in my lesson as my
target audience ranges from teens to the middle age.
• Looking back I realised that from my questionnaire it turns out that the older
generation have seen more music videos than the younger ones, assuming this
is from tv channels such as MTV, now people have to actively search online for
the video, if having realised this earlier I would have looked into ways of drawing
in younger viewers.
• I feel as if the questions asked were appropriate and useful for the research for
my project.
• I sent my questions out to multiple people however only got few responses with
everyone being busy, the lack of responses became a struggle leading me to
generalise my observations with little to go off.
Research
I didn’t have much time to research as
it was a last minute add on during
production therefore a researched
into a few different posters that
matched the style I was thinking off.
There is a lack of detail however given
my time frame I was unable to create
an in depth analysis.
Planning
• Throughout production a few original plans had been changed
for example, I was going to use more clips of the band playing
together however the drummer was off ill on the day of filming
and I also last minute added in some effects in post-production
which I later regret as I didn’t allow myself much time to
research and learn the techniques so I believe it looks quite
choppy and extremely amauteur, I now know the importance
of sticking to my plan.
• I stuck pretty well to my mood board, every image added I re
created in video form. Seeing my vision lade out in front of me
helped me see what worked well together. It helped me see
what vibe I was going for in each shot so on filming day I had a
strong idea of what angles and locations to use. As for my
album cover I again stuck to the colour scheme of my selected
images to take inspiration from. However I do feel like my
mood board didn’t go into to much detail and from an
outsiders perspective it might not glue together quite as well
without my vision in my head. However I didn’t stick to my
original idea of starting the video off with me at home
watching the video camera as when filming I soon realised it
wouldn’t work to well alongside my other clips.
Planning
• I did a rough sketch of my vision for the album
cover which helped me look into techniques of
image effects on photo shop. Messing around
with the layout helped me see what worked well
and what was less effective. The album name
that the song is part of is also called Wheatus
(which is the bands name) I decided to change
the name as it would make my Wheatus logo
stand out more on the cigarette packet.
• I created a shot list which included locations and
times which helped me whilst filming as I knew
exactly what to film and how long for
Time Management
• I think I handled my time well and stuck to my
timetable however If I had more time in pre
production I would’ve gone into more detail so I could
hand my work In at a higher standard.
• If I had more time after I finished what I thought was
my final product, I would’ve spent more time on the
effects I quickly added or I would’ve realised before
exporting that they didn’t work as well as planned.
• Having finished in what I thought was plenty of time
(until I made last minute tweaks on my video) I
decided to make two band posters, I researched
existing products and created what I believed was
appropriate for my audience.
Technical Qualities
The camera work in my music video is a like
Tubthuming as in multiple shots the camera isn’t
stationary. The fast camera cuts between ‘beats’ is
also a factor in my music video as it is very engaging
for the audience. When researching the music video I
really liked the scene where the lead singer stood still
whilst everything moves fast around him however I
didn’t have the time, skill or budget to create it. Close
up shots of the lead singer feature in this music ad
mine. They had a red set up for the band scenes so
there was a clear difference between scenes but again
didn’t have the budget.
I took inspiration again on the fast cuts between
scenes in Walkin’ On The Sun and the high and low
angle shots. If given more time I would have added
the transitions between shots that’s frequently used
in this music video. My music video was filmed in
England so I couldn’t get the same bright blue sky
however I did include pops of colour from the
backgrounds.
similarities
pops of colour
Technical Qualities
• Comparing My music video to Stacey’s Mom I notice not
many similarities other than the the ‘random’ clips that don’t
include lip syncing. I really liked the cartoon effect of the band
playing and the transition from photo of the on the wall to
the band playing however again I didn’t have the time to
learn how to create such an effect.
• The art style in comparison to my cd cover Stuck to the basic
colour scheme and the cartoon style however mine was more
obviously digital art (on purpose) I felt like it worked with my
block colour style. After making a few tweeks to my layout I
decided to add pictures of the band members, I took screen
shots from my video and added them in, the lead singer
wasn’t in the same place as the other band members so to
match the theme I photoshoped the lead singer into an
existing photo of the background.
• The effect I was going for for most of my shots was candid
therefor there wasn’t much future planning and it was
planned on the day as I’d direct my actors to ie hug.
Technical qualities
• I never watched the official video for Teenage
Dirtbag leaving me with no biases or grounds
to copy, I am going to watch it now and
compare…
• Mine is 100x better because I use fast cuts
between scenes to match the fast pace of the
song.
• Candid band
Aesthetic Qualities
Once I had exported my video and uploaded it to Youtube the
quality became low, without time to fix this I have no proof to the
examiner that my video was filmed to a high quality, next time I will
make sure I leave time to upload and double check it has exported
correctly.
The overall look of my music video I believe is to a high standard,
the fast cuts, mixture of angles and pops of colour all give reason to
draw in the audiences attention, I included band scenes and scenes
of the band ‘messing around’ which seems popular amongst music
videos of that genre. I went through and changed around the colour
grading in some shots to keep the lighting somewhat synonymous
throughout to create a perfect blend of shots. I wanted a clear
difference between shots therefor I didn’t colour match completely.
The pop of block colour in my album cover I believe stood out and
would gage the attention of my audience, I made one of my posters
match the same colour scheme of blue (which also feature’s in my
music video with the lead singers jacket and the train seats
I didn’t have the access to get actors who could also play instruments there
for there is the distraction to the audience when they band members are
authentically playing the instruments.
Audience Appeal
I think I have appealed to my audience successfully as I have my band
doing ‘teenagerly’ things such as shopping, smoking and messing
about in a shopping centre. This unruly behaviour is common amongst
bands in this genre and the fans seem to enjoy the ‘I don’t care
attitude’ Take the Gallaghers (Oasis) or Alex Turner (Artic Monkeys) for
example. Viewers wouldn’t be expecting a calm, slow paced video so I
made sure I knew the common themes and stuck to the expectation of
the video. I would say my project is PG, the video includes smoking
and the album cover has cigarettes and a beer bottle, my target
audience isn’t for children however I don’t include anything too
explicit. Band posters are common amongst the ‘indie’ genre, when
you imagine an indie rock teenager’s bedroom you envision band /
movie posters. My questionnaire showed me that younger audiences
don’t tend to watch music videos therefore I again made sure I stuck to
the teenage feel so they can relate to themselves whilst watching my
music video.

Feedback
Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
• I liked the overall aesthetic of the video and felt as if it gave off a vintage vibe
which worked really well with the song that you have chosen. I also preferred the
video when you had more shots in a shorter space of time ( fast paced editing).
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• One thing that could be improved is there was some shots that was used that was
a much shorter duration than other ones therefore it almost felt like it was placed
there by accident
Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
• The pace, shot diversity and composition, theme of song and video mix well
• Lyrics and song audio worked together well
• Lip syncing matched with the audio
• The clips matched the beat of the song
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• Make use of colour grading and transitions
• Some shots felt overused.
• The song went on for too long
Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
The cartoon effect worked well with the font of the ‘No Damn Given’ in b&w
Colour grading worked well

• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
The black and white poster felt like the images of the band didn’t fit together
because of the different lighting on the band members.
Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
I agree that the guitarist was slightly darker than the rest in the b&w poster, it was
intentional for the two singers to be lighter however I could’ve made the drummer even
more darker to create a more obvious contrast.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
I disagree with the negative view on the different lengths of shots, I made my video
look like some scenes where basic shots filmed on a video camera and I also wanted
them to fit the speed of the beat in the song.
The repetitive shots were intentional for the repetitiveness of the song.
I didn’t have control over the length of the song and if the band Wheatus came to me
asking for a music video I wouldn’t be able to shorten the song as its not my role in the
music production of the song.
Peer Feedback Summary
Although I disagree that some shots were overused (I assume the
telephone box scene) however I agree I could’ve used the same scene
but with different camera angles whilst signing into the phone to create
less of a lack of interest from my audience. Regular received feedback
was the approval of the pace, cutting scenes to the beat I will take this on
board as a skill and try work to make it even better, knowing I am able to
edit to a soundtrack gives me the confidence to want to work with
moving image with audio in future projects.
I will ensure to colour grade my posters slightly better in photo shop to
ensure images put together look as if they belong together as one band
member was slightly darker. although I feel it works, on a technical level
it is slacking.
