In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Firstly, I had researched many local newspapers to give me an idea of what the convention are that
applies to a newspaper. I analysed newspaper mediums which includes its content such as; the
masthead, headlines, captions and the types of stories to include. I have learnt the what the layout of a
newspaper is intended to look like and Galtung and Ruge’s news values.
On the front cover of my newspaper I made sure that there was immediacy, familiarity and surprise.
Audiences love surprise especially negative one because its keeps the audience interested. The visual
impact in my newspaper has a strong image. It shows a lot of flowers placed at the scene where a
young boy died.
I have also gained the advantage of Blumler and Katz theory of what is relevant to make a popular
successful newspaper. My audience gains escape, social interaction and identification.
I feel that my newspaper looks quite authentic
The main headline is in large black lettering. The black signifies the importance of the story and also to
catch the readers attention. My colour scheme is red, black and white. The advantage of this was that
all my headlines stood out against the white background.
Throughout all the newspapers I had researched and analysed, I had found that they all carried the
same trait; a full colour picture. The conventions of a newspaper marks a picture as a short story or
outline of a the article.
I had written the whole main story on my front page and the second story onto the second page. I do
know that continuing the main story onto the second page is a convention I have picked up from other
newspapers, however I decided not to use it.
Also on my front page I had included advertisements, this is another convention I have used. These
advertisements stood out from the newspaper itself so it also interacted with the reader. The adverts
in newspapers are a great way for local business’s to publicise their elements.
I have included the address for the newspapers website and the date it was printed. The inside page of
this newspaper contains the second support story and more adverts which I had followed from the
conventions of newspapers. On the second page spread of my newspaper after I had included
advertisements.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Bonding my main header throughout my
medium products.
Keeping the same colour schemes
throughout my media products.
My newspaper, website and poster link together in different ways.
Firstly the main header on each of my medium products are the same.
Each of my medium products carry the same colour scheme of
black, red and white. My slogan is only present in my website and
poster ‘keep up with the news’. The ancillary are the colours red.
The images are also cropped in order to fit the adverts. I had cropped
the car and the woman for the adverts. In my poster I had tried to
make a face by using mini photos of newspaper article s I had taken. I
used Serif Photo Plus to sandwich print all the image together to create
my poster.
Another way in which I have combined my main product with my
ancillary texts is by putting the website address on my media products .
It creates synergy and creates an image informing the audience of the
links.
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
I have learnt that audience feedback is very important things to
consider before you finalise the your media products. I made a
questionnaire to gain audience feedback on what they want to
see in magazine and what they actually look for in them. My
survey had found that young people do read the newspaper and
are very interested in what is happening around them. Many
prefer to read newspapers than watch the news.
My questionnaire gave me an insight of what to include and
what to advertise in my newspaper. My questionnaire engaged
the consumers and audience of newspapers.
I posted my newspaper onto Facebook to obtain audience
feedback. The audience had stated that the newspaper
looks legit. They say the layout and colour scheme works
really well and the red font on my masthead dominates the
paper. This is one of the conventions of a newspaper I
needed to achieve.
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and
evaluation stages?
Google was my search engine in order for me to
research other newspapers, poster and websites.
Through Google I found ‘survey monkey’ which is
where I made my questionnaire.
I used a pencil to draw my ideas on to paper to
explore every means.
I used a laptop to access all web sites and software's
which I was able to create my newspaper.
Serif page plus was my main developing software in
which I made my poster and newspaper front and
inside page. I decided to make my website on an
actual website based site, therefore my website is
up and running online. I did my own networking and
codes to make my website.
Blogger allowed me to post my production and
development whilst researching and producing my
medium products.
