Evaluation 2 how does your media product represent particular social groups
1. Evaluation 2- How does your
media product represent
particular social groups?
By René McIntosh
2. What is a social Group?
A social group is a collection of people who share similar traits
therefore are grouped together and interact with each other.
The people within this group are very aware of each other’s
similar characteristics. Social groups can be categorized a
number of ways including the following:
• Age
• Gender
• Race
• Sexuality
• Hobbies
In our thriller we used/showed three social groups: A mistress,
A Scorned Wife, And a deceitful husband.
3. The Mistress
The Mistress’s characteristics/ Mistress’s as a whole social group are shown to be
the following things within our thriller: Sly, two-faced, promiscuous and selfish.
Close ups are shown of the mistress’s face, as she hugs her “friend” whilst rolling
her eyes. This action of love with a facial expression of hate shows her two faced-
ness and her slyness. She is also constantly shown in a deep focus watching over
her friend who she is jealous of. We dressed the mistress in a seductive way with a
short skirt and a red crop top. The colour red, connotes seduction and also danger.
For the role of the Mistress, we took inspiration from Glen close from the thriller film
Fatal Attraction. She plays a Mistress who attempts to kill her boyfriend’s wife which is
what happened in our plot. We also however took inspiration from when she used the
prop of a knife while confronting her romantic competition.
4. The wronged wife
The wronged wife s very innocent and naive and is unaware of the betrayal that is
going on between her friend and her fiancé Her character is dressed in ordinary
clothes giving her that “girl next door” vibe. She is always smiling and is very happy
until she finds out about the affair. Even then, a close up shows her face to be upset
but never angry.
We took inspiration from Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. Uma Thurman, like the wife at the
end of our thriller, was attacked and left for dead. We also used the same sound
effect as the one in kill bill as see opens her eyes and is shown to be alive and well.
Uma Thurman however, is not shown to be alive in the opening so we did tweak it a
bit.
5. The deceitful husband.
The Deceitful Husband is very charming and attractive but also very sly and manipulative.
He manages to make women fall in love with him, as if they are fighting for a winning
prize and because of this, has the highest status in our thriller. He is often shown at
lower camera angles as the Mistress and Wife both look up to him to seek his approval.
In flashbacks we see the character cheating on his fiancée with another woman and
using props like flowers in order to woo his bit on the side. For the unfaithful man we
took our inspiration from castor Troy from Face Off. His character is a charming
womanizer who is very bad but also very charming. We used him as inspiration because
of how he talks to women and treats them like they are special.
