Laura Humphreys evaluated her media magazine product. She answered 8 questions about how her magazine used conventions of real magazines, represented social groups, would be distributed, targeted audiences, attracted audiences, what technologies she learned, how it progressed from her preliminary work, and how well it fulfilled the task brief. She analyzed researching magazines like NME and Q, including conventions in her layouts, covers, and articles. She aimed to represent indie music fans through the style of her cover star Daisy. Overall she felt her final product successfully fulfilled the brief of creating an indie music magazine.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. Question !
• 1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms

• 8) How successful do you feel your end product is in fulfilling the task ?
How well does it fit the brief ?
5. 1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products ?
• While making my magazine product. I tried to include as many media code’s and conventions
of a real magazine that I hade researched into. I analysed magazine’s such as Q and NME
because I knew I would want my magazine to look like this. When making my own magazine I
played around with different tools to get my image perfect.

This task helped me to understand where to place
cover lines it also gave me the name for my real
product. Furthermore it allowed me to understand
what supporting acts I could use for my real
magazine.
We analysed many magazines and applied them to magazine’s we had made ourselves of
popular artist's. We done this task to get a better understanding of where codes and
conventions should be placed. When I first thought of how I wanted my magazine to look I
done lots of research and among other magazines this magazine stood out to me the most.
As I liked everything about this magazine.
6. 1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products ?
• After learning about conventions I tried to apply them to my own product. I made sure cover
lines framed my main artist and surrounded the main image as the audience would be able
to look at the main image then the cover lines would be attractive enough to catch the
audience eye. I wanted my masthead to be to the left of my magazine as I thought it stands
out and creates the most attention.
I made sure my main cover line dominated my magazine
compared to the other cover lines as I wanted it to stand out
therefore I put it in a different font and colour compared to the
others as black stands out against the main artists clothing.
http://laurahumphreysasmedia.blogspot.co.uk/
The are ways that I challenged the conventions and ways I didn’t of a typical
music magazine. As I didn’t mention real artists at all in my magazine. This
makes all the artist I have used unique, which makes it more appealing to the
nme audience as I was trying to achieve a unique magazine. Furthermore the
smoke surrounding the cigarette stands out also her clothing stands out on the
dark background which has contrast with her eyes, this means the magazine is
more likely to stand out on a shelf compared to other magazines. Finally I think
I challenge conventions of a typical music magazine as her clothes are very
regular and casual, they are not dramatic and don’t look expensive compared
to other magazines out there, therefore the audience may feel as though they
can connect with the artist more.
7. 1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?
• Influences.
I liked this magazine and it influenced me
when making my I like the front cover
imagine I think it looks very edgy and like
the artist has more to tell us throughout the
magazine.
I liked this magazine and it influenced my
decision when picking my magazine
because I enjoy the colours I like out it pops
out at the audience and would stand out on
the shelf this is why I used a yellow colour
when my magazine as it fitted well with the
other colours on the main image and stood
out a lot compared to the other black and
white magazines which also influenced my
decision.
As you can see all my magazine that
influenced me a lot are nme, this why
when creating my magazine it was
aimed a indie audience but also and
nme abidance. I liked this magazine
also as I liked the main image

Both of these nme contents
page influenced me when
making my own magazine
because, I enjoyed the way
they was laid out. I liked the
different conventions used on
the magazine and I like how
to the left on each magazine
they had news, features etc..
Both magazines also have a
subscribe offer at the bottom of
each contents page therefore I
included this within my own.
Within my own contents page, I included the
conventions used at the side of the nme
magazines on my own as I thought this would
attract my audience, I also included a subscription
offer at the bottom of my magazine. I also created
social media logos of my own to encourage my
audience to use social media to find out more
about the magazine and sign up to previews
http://laurahumphreysasmedia.blogspot.co.uk/
9. 1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products ?
I like the layout of my double page spread. I like the fact my main
pull quote is over my main image. I also like the fact the quote
overlaps some of the daisy’s body this stands out as the font is
pink which is the same pink as daisy is wearing. When I first made
my magazine it was a Q&A but I changed this to an article as this is
a typically convention of a magazine and is more likely to attract
my target audience. The background is very unique which suggest
that the artist daisy is unique as well ,as you wouldn’t usually see
this on a typical magazine. I highlight some quotes that the daisy
said within the interview to make It obvious that these are daisy’s
words. The blue of the background on the article is blue which is
the same blue as daisy’s blue denim jacket.

Analysing this double page spread helped me to
understand the different conventions of a double
page spread and what I needed to include as the
colour scheme is simple, I made sure my colour
scheme was simple within my magazine therefore
it was not confusing for the demographic as I
made sure that loads wasn’t going on so it
wouldn’t take away from the actual double page
spread. I also enjoyed the fact that all of the
writing was to the right side of the double page
spread which I done within mine also.
11. 2) How does your media product represent particular social groups ?
• My magazine is aimed towards teenagers, and younger adults who enjoy and are interested in indie music.
Nme especially helped me with my magazine to ensure that I got my indie feeling across. Q and nme
helped me get a cool and indie appeal across my magazine. I tried to represent indie through daisy’s style
as her appearance would hopefully draw in the demographic, I tried to portray daisy as been down to
earth and friendly within my magazine this therefore gives the demographic something to aspire to and
someone they can look up too. Within the magazine daisy say’s “ I don’t make music for eyes I make music
for ears” . This is the main pull quote on my magazine this is a good message to teenagers that its not
always about looks and you should be yourself.
http://laurahumphreysasmedia.blogspot.co.uk/
I went out and took indie photos especially to help me get more in the mind-set of an indie magazine.

Going out and taking pictures of indie settings allowed me to become more in the mind-
set of someone who is creating a magazine it also allowed me to know what
teenagers/young adults look for in a indie magazine. It helped me to know exactly what
social group I was appealing to.
My images on my contents page and double page spread help to give the
magazine an further edgy feel an indie feel they also help to attract and indie
social group as they are unique images.
13. 3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media
product and why ?
• Due to the fact that my research is mostly based on NME and some of Q’s magazine’s I feel as
though NME would publish my magazine due to its indie feel and due to the fact I have done
lots of research into NME and feel as though I know a lot of the magazine. NME have
included many features that I have tried to include in my own magazine while also trying to
make my magazine unique to itself this why I also feel as though NME would publish my
magazine. I loved how NME have a range of different magazine’s and overall I think that NME
would be the best institution to distribute my magazine.
15. 4) Who would be the audience of your media product ?
• My magazine targets both girls and boys that are teenagers and younger adults
between the ages of 16-30 who are interested in indie music. Nme also have the
same target audience that I would also like to appeal too as there target audience
is young adults also. The link below shows my potential target audience
questionnaire.

The remake model task helped me to understand who my magazine would be aimed
at and the attitude an my magazine should have to attract my target audience.

max=2016-11-24T13:00:00Z&max-results=7&start=28&by-

17. 5) How did you attract / address your audience ?
• I wanted the colours of my magazine to be unique but similar to nme while also
complimenting each other. I wanted my masthead to be a bold bright colour that stood out
on my background, the yellow helps the magazine to stand out and gives the magazine a
friendlier feel it is unique which will make the audience feel like the is more fun within the
magazine. . The black main cover line suggest mystery as though the artist has more to come
and more to tell, it also brings the whole front cover together. The white colours helps to
provide a balance between the black font and the dark background.
•
http://laurahumphreysasmedia.blogspot.co.uk/
I wanted the name of my masthead to be unique, that’s why I chose depth. Depth
suggests that the is more depth within the magazine to be revealed. I also
wanted the mast head to be easy to read and say. Depth was my favourite
masthead as it looked professional as possible and it was easy to read on a shelf.
I feel as though depth fits with my magazine and the conventions well.
Furthermore depth is great masthead as it fits with any colour. This would attract
my demographic as the masthead gives the audience a young appeal.
18. 5) How did you attract / address your audience ?
• The are many different images within the magazine. The main image of the cover
star daisy it show’s daisy looking edgy and mysterious while being indie but it also
expresses a feel that she is down to earth. Daisy has direct eye contact with the
demographic which appeals to them to by the magazine as though she is drawing
them in. The is an edgy and soft side within the magazine but also may allow the
demographic to know that they can connect with daisy.
http://laurahumphreysasmedia.blogspot.co.uk/
I tried to include as many cover lines as possible as I learnt from my
research that this is the thing to do. By using the sky line “featuring
the best indie artist” it gives the magazine a sense of exclusivity. I
engulfed my cover star with cover lines therefore when the audience
looked at the cover star they would also be drawn to the cover line.
The main cover line is “I'm bringing indie back” this would draw the
audience in as they may think about what the artist has bought back,
what are they doing that is new. The fact it says “record store day
2017” would attract the audience as they would want to read about
the new records. As I wrote each cover line I tried to use language
that would attract my certain demographic.
20. 6) What have you leant about technologies from this
process of constructing the product ?
• The is many different technologies I learnt about while constructing my
product the first one being google blogger.
Google blogger was any easy and simple way to display the making of my
project. It is brilliant as I was able to access my blog at any time and update it
when needed, I was able to keep everything organised and everything was
published and placed effectively. Furthermore blogger was quick and I was
able to log in anywhere as it was connected the Gmail. Google blogger
allowed me to keep all my work in one place rather than carrying around a
folder. http://laurahumphreysasmedia.blogspot.co.uk/
21. 6) What have you leant about technologies from this
process of constructing the product ?
• While creating my magazine I also used the technologies of page plus and
paint.net. I created my magazine on page plus which was effective as it allowed me
to do different things while creating my magazine and the images were good
quality. A down side to page plus was that it had an limited choice of shapes
therefore on my front cover I had to settle for a circle to write “win Asher tickets”
within, other than that page plus was a great software to create my magazine.
• Paint. Net was also another software I used to create my magazine this allowed me
to use tools such as the magic wand to get rid of any bits of the image I no longer
wanted. So overall was a good technologies but I couldn’t of made my whole
magazine on there as it didn’t have certain tools I needed like page plus had.
• When taking my images I took them on my IPhone I had a specific idea of how I
already wanted my magazine to look therefore the camera on my iPhone was
excellent in achieving high quality images.
23. 7) Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel you
have learnt in the progression from it to the full product ?
Preliminary Task Final Product
In the preliminary task the appearance of my magazine looks very simple and unprofessional. I am missing basic
conventions such as a URL and a price . The whole magazine looks amateur. The isn’t many cover lines the cover lines
don’t really wrap around my main image which takes away from the magazine. The font and the colours do not pop
out therefore wouldn’t stand out of the shelf in a store. Overall the magazine looks unprofessional compared to my
final product and hopefully I have redeem myself in everything I missed on my preliminary task. I feel as though I
have learnt about all the different codes and conventions of a magazine and where they should be placed on my
front cover.
24. 7) Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you
feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the
full product ?
Preliminary Task contents page Final product contents
The final contents is far more professional compared to my preliminary task. The final piece is more put
together with more information on the contents page and basic conventions that I need to include. I included
little details such as social media logos and lines between my information to break up my contents page which
made my contents page look better. Furthermore I added more pictures to my magazine which adds to it
looking more professional. Overall I am pleasured with my magazine as I feel I have come on leaps after looking
at my preliminary task.
26. 8) How successful do you feel your end product is in
fulfilling the task ? How well does it fit the brief ?
Over all I am pleased how my magazine turned out. I followed the codes and
conventions of a typical music magazine why also trying to make it my own. I feel as
though I have followed the brief well as I tried my best. After looking at all my research I
think that my magazine does appeal to my target audience and that I have got across
the music genre I wanted too which is indie. I think that my magazine looks as
professional as possible which is fulfilling the task while also sticking to the conventions
so overall I am pleased with the outcome of my magazine.
