- In order to make the BI promise a reality, a new platform and organizational approach are required.The new organizational approach must recognize that business will never be able to fully self-serve with respect to BI because business does not have the data knowledge nor the skills, nor the time to do this. The BI Builders, who are skilled in BI and have the data knowledge and most importantly, the time, must be involved. However, business will no longer be satisfied with static reports delivered months after a request. The new approach leverages the BI Builders to build the 80% of what business needs and let the business users derive the final 20% of what they need through BI self-service. This involves interactive reports and dashboards for most business users (the casual users) and ad hoc query and analysis for the minority of business users (the power users).First and foremost this platform must address the technology inhibitors noted earlier. The new BI platform must also provide end-to-end BI capabilities required for all user profiles and deployment types. The solution must also be proven to ensure adoption by organizations who might be concerned with a solution that was not deemed a “safe choice”
