How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
Age
The main audience of my magazine was teens/young adults.
My magazine represented teens as stereotypically laid back and taking things easily.
I aimed for my magazine to represent this age range this way because of the people I
interviewed and researched who like the indie/rock music, those of which were
extremely casual and individual.
Therefore if my magazine represented teenagers in this way then it would encourage
the audience to purchase it as they can connect with and aspire to be like those
featured in the magazine.
These were the 2 kerrang
and Q magazine readers I
interviewed, as you can
see they both have casual
and individual style.
Similar to those I featured
in my magazine.
Gender
The models I used for my magazine were all female.
This is because of many reasons including:
● 100% of the people who answered my questionnaire were female.
● My magazine is based on indie/rock music and individuality, which
stereotypically is more of a female thing, this is because females are
more fashion orientated than men are. Therefore females are more
likely to purchase a magazine just to read about a style icon of
theirs.
● I wanted my magazine to ignore and break past the common “male
gaze” and therefore I chose to use females in my photographs
having fun, looking natural and not being sexualized.
Edited and perfected image
to fit the male gaze. Heavily
edited unlike my images.
Stereotypes
When people think of rock music or rock bands, stereotypically you think of
males. Majority of rock icons are male.
Rock gigs or festivals stereotypically consist of big burly males, rather than
innocent dainty females.
I wanted my magazine to break past this stereotype, and to get all the rock chick
girls noticed and accepted.
Doing this will show the equality of males and females. If males can throw each
other round a mosh pit why cant girls too? “The Jam” is the one magazine that
represents the girls that don't mind messing up their hair and make up to have a
bit of fun.
Stereotypical rock band
Hayley Williams, lead
singer of famous rock
band “paramore” and
icon of Seren from
my reader profile.
Appearance
Most music magazines have an theme of sex appeal and
can be provocative
Like this front cover of Q magazine which has an attractive
topless woman, which is to try and entice readers (males by
attracting them and females by giving them an icon)
However I wanted my magazine to entice viewers purely with its
contents and because people are genuinely interested, not just
for a picture of someone they find attractive.
I chose for the clothing of my female models to not be revealing
or particularly feminine, therefore my magazine represents the
more masculine aspects of women.
This is also why the questions asked in the interviews weren't
about appearance or what products the bands members use.
They brought out answers that let the viewers learn more about
the personality of the interviewees rather than their appearance.
