Another pillar of our methodology is to identify sub-regional markets, but in Australia, data centre clusters are less pronounced in the major locales. In place of a sub-regional analysis, we found it more useful to look at the Sydney and Melbourne markets in tandem as they exhibit certain similarities to sub-regions – having some interplay while still existing largely on a standalone basis.
The retail-wholesale composition of both markets is quite similar. Both Sydney and Melbourne have larger retail colocation markets but the directional trend is towards wholesale and the market should be about evenly split by 2021.
Not surprisingly, the growth trajectories and utilization rates of Sydney and Melbourne are also headed in similar directions. In 2016, we estimated the Sydney colocation market to be worth US $360m and projected to grow 12% y/y in 2017. Meanwhile, in Melbourne, we put that number at US $119m with a projected growth rate of 9% y/y.
The absorption rate is the most important market dynamic in Australia with space utilization outpacing that of power by a significant degree. But power densities continue to rise and power utilization is going to increasingly be a driver behind absorption in a market that is expected to see relatively fewer builds in the near-term and continue to attract power-hungry deployments.
Australia, like other mature markets in the Asia-pacific region, is a magnet for massive-scale cloud and this is even more crucial for Australia given its isolation, which has a profound impact on latency and performance. Getting closer to end users and an increasingly strict data sovereignty regime makes in-country infrastructure basically a must-have. This should keep demand steady, as all of the larger technology uptake indicators are healthy and at the head of the pack from an APAC perspective. There are challenges facing the market. The cost associated with building and operating is high, but this is offset to a certain degree by meaningfully lower power costs.

Perimeter-based security approaches have not evolved to meet the modern application-focused enterprise. The weaknesses of the perimeter-based approach are on display in the east/west attacks on Sony, Target, and Home Depot exploits where hackers gained access to the perimeter, then ransacked the internal networks with minimal resistance. What can modern enterprises do? A “defense in depth” approach to security at the network layer. Enterprises must strengthen existing core networking hardware and virtualization layer security with added application security. In data centres, physical network isolation is not practical, and logical segmentation can be very difficult without using evolved networking approaches. As data centers became wholly virtualized and blur the line between data center and private cloud, we can finally add and control logical segmentation at the virtualization layer. This “Application Segmentation” provides the most comprehensive security model available today. You can apply application segmentation defense in depth using Cohesive Networks’ VNS3:turret. VNS3:turret creates a cryptographically unique micro-perimeter around each application topology. Perimeter-based security approaches have not evolved to meet the modern application-focused enterprise. The weaknesses of the perimeter-based approach are on display in the east/west attacks on Sony, Target, and Home Depot exploits where hackers gained access to the perimeter, then ransacked the internal networks with minimal resistance. What can modern enterprises do? A “defense in depth” approach to security at the network layer. Enterprises must strengthen existing core networking hardware and virtualization layer security with added application security. In data centres, physical network isolation is not practical, and logical segmentation can be very difficult without using evolved networking approaches. As data centers became wholly virtualized and blur the line between data center and private cloud, we can finally add and control logical segmentation at the virtualization layer. This “Application Segmentation” provides the most comprehensive security model available today. You can apply application segmentation defense in depth using Cohesive Networks’ VNS3:turret. VNS3:turret creates a cryptographically unique micro-perimeter around each application topology. This presentation will examine how an defense in depth at the application layer can stop the next Sony attack.

We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Infrastructure Challenges in Scaling RAG with Custom AI models
Building Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems with open-source and custom AI models is a complex task. This talk explores the challenges in productionizing RAG systems, including retrieval performance, response synthesis, and evaluation. We’ll discuss how to leverage open-source models like text embeddings, language models, and custom fine-tuned models to enhance RAG performance. Additionally, we’ll cover how BentoML can help orchestrate and scale these AI components efficiently, ensuring seamless deployment and management of RAG systems in the cloud.
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

DATA CENTRE OF CHOICE Self-owned and carrier-neutral data centres are the data centres of choice for Swiss cloud and hosting providers Second most popular in Switzerland are CNDCs 3 In the EU, the Netherlands scored highest for use of CNDCs. Spain, on the other hand scored just 8% for preferring CNDCs
- 4. CUSTOMER DEMAND TODAY Demand for traditional hosting exceeds demand for cloud in Switzerland 4 Demand for Cloud (IaaS) and Applications (SaaS) above the EU averages
- 5. CLOUD REVENUE SHARE 2012 TO 2015 However, the majority expect the cloud wave to hit within the next 3 years 5 33% of Swiss respondents expect 40-100% of revenues to come from cloud by 2015
- 6. REVENUE IMPACT OF CLOUD 64% of Swiss respondents are positive about the revenue impact of cloud 6 Of all those surveyed Spain and the Netherlands were more optimistic in this respect
- 7. KEY COMPETITORS Service providers in Switzerland see local providers as their key competition 7 The European trend could be explained by the fact that Pan- European and U.S. providers are perceived as offering different products which target different requirements
- 8. STRATEGIES TO LEVERAGE CLOUD The top 3 strategies by Swiss cloud and hosting service providers 8 Looking underneath these figures, we found that a large majority (61%) execute 3 or more strategies These strategies tend to be emergent, ad-hoc, and mostly driven by customer requirements
