Owen O’Malley and Ryan Blue offer an overview of Iceberg, a new open source project that defines a new table layout addresses the challenges of current Hive tables, with properties specifically designed for cloud object stores, such as S3. Iceberg is an Apache-licensed open source project. It specifies the portable table format and standardizes many important features, including:
* All reads use snapshot isolation without locking.
* No directory listings are required for query planning.
* Files can be added, removed, or replaced atomically.
* Full schema evolution supports changes in the table over time.

Lambda architecture is a popular technique where records are processed by a batch system and streaming system in parallel. The results are then combined during query time to provide a complete answer. Strict latency requirements to process old and recently generated events made this architecture popular. The key downside to this architecture is the development and operational overhead of managing two different systems.
There have been attempts to unify batch and streaming into a single system in the past. Organizations have not been that successful though in those attempts. But, with the advent of Delta Lake, we are seeing lot of engineers adopting a simple continuous data flow model to process data as it arrives. We call this architecture, The Delta Architecture.
Using Spark Streaming and NiFi for the next generation of ETL in the enterpriseDataWorks Summit
On paper, combining Apache NiFi, Kafka, and Spark Streaming provides a compelling architecture option for building your next generation ETL data pipeline in near real time. What does this look like in enterprise production environment to deploy and operationalized?
The newer Spark Structured Streaming provides fast, scalable, fault-tolerant, end-to-end exactly-once stream processing with elegant code samples, but is that the whole story? This session will cover the Royal Bank of Canada’s (RBC) journey of moving away from traditional ETL batch processing with Teradata towards using the Hadoop ecosystem for ingesting data. One of the first systems to leverage this new approach was the Event Standardization Service (ESS). This service provides a centralized “client event” ingestion point for the bank’s internal systems through either a web service or text file daily batch feed. ESS allows down stream reporting applications and end users to query these centralized events.
We discuss the drivers and expected benefits of changing the existing event processing. In presenting the integrated solution, we will explore the key components of using NiFi, Kafka, and Spark, then share the good, the bad, and the ugly when trying to adopt these technologies into the enterprise. This session is targeted toward architects and other senior IT staff looking to continue their adoption of open source technology and modernize ingest/ETL processing. In this talk we demonstrate the blueprint for such an implementation in Microsoft Azure, with Azure Databricks — a PaaS Spark offering – as a key component. We go back to some core principles of functional programming and link them to the capabilities of Apache Spark for various end-to-end big data analytics scenarios.
We also illustrate the “Lambda architecture in use” and the associated tread-offs using the real customer scenario – Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam – a terabyte-scale Azure-based data platform handles data from 2.500.000 visitors per year.

Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) is still a widely-used pattern to move data between different systems via batch processing. Due to its challenges in today’s world where real time is the new standard, an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) is used in many enterprises as integration backbone between any kind of microservice, legacy application or cloud service to move data via SOAP / REST Web Services or other technologies. Stream Processing is often added as its own component in the enterprise architecture for correlation of different events to implement contextual rules and stateful analytics. Using all these components introduces challenges and complexities in development and operations.
This session discusses how teams in different industries solve these challenges by building a native streaming platform from the ground up instead of using ETL and ESB tools in their architecture. This allows to build and deploy independent, mission-critical streaming real time application and microservices. The architecture leverages distributed processing and fault-tolerance with fast failover, no-downtime rolling deployments and the ability to reprocess events, so you can recalculate output when your code changes. Integration and Stream Processing are still key functionality but can be realized in real time natively instead of using additional ETL, ESB or Stream Processing tools.

What if my data is already in order? Stream Processing has given us an elegant and powerful solution for running analytic queries and logic over high volumes of continuously arriving data. However, in both Apache Flink and Apache Beam, the notion of time-ordering is baked in at a very low level, making it difficult to express computations that are interested in a semantic-, rather than time-ordering of the data. In financial services, what often matters the most about the data moving between systems is not when the data was created, but in what order, to the extent that many institutions engineer a global sequencing over all data entering and produced by their systems to achieve complete determinism. How, then, can financial institutions and others best employ Stream Processing on streams of data that are already ordered? I will cover various techniques that can make this work, as well as seek input from the community on how Flink might be improved to better support these use-cases.

Kubernetes has first class support on Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure.
Unlike YARN, Kubernetes started as a general purpose orchestration framework with a focus on serving jobs. Support for long-running, data intensive batch workloads required some careful design decisions. Engineers across several organizations have been working on Kubernetes support as a cluster scheduler backend within Spark. During this process, we encountered several challenges in translating Spark considerations into idiomatic Kubernetes constructs. In this talk, we describe the challenges and the ways in which we solved them. This talk will be technical and is aimed at people who are looking to run Spark effectively on their clusters. The talk assumes basic familiarity with cluster orchestration and containers.

Being in the payments space, Stripe requires strict correctness and freshness guarantees. We rely on Flink as the natural solution for delivering on this in support of our Change Data Capture (CDC) infrastructure. We heavily rely on CDC as a tool for capturing data change streams from our databases without critically impacting database reliability, scalability, and maintainability. Data derived from these streams is used broadly across the business and powers many of our critical financial reporting systems totalling over $640 Billion in payment volume annually. We use many components of Flink’s flexible DataStream API to perform aggregations and abstract away the complexities of stream processing from our downstreams. In this talk, we’ll walk through our experience from the very beginning to what we have in production today. We’ll share stories around the technical details and trade-offs we encountered along the way.

Ranger’s pluggable architecture allows resource access policy administration and enforcement for standard and custom services from a “single pane of glass”. Apache Ranger has a rich Authorization Model, which provides the mechanism to author Policy in a Ranger Admin Server and serves as policy decision and audit point in authorizing user’s resource access within various components of Hadoop ecosystem.
This session will provide a deep dive into Ranger framework and a cook-book for extending Ranger to do authorization / auditing on resource access to external applications, including technical details of Rest APIs, Ranger policy engine and enriching authorization requests, with a demo of a sample application.We will then demonstrate a real-world example of how Ranger has simplified security enforcement for Hadoop-native MPP SQL engine like Apache HAWQ (incubating),which previously used its built-in Postgres-like authorization mechanisms. The integration design includes a Ranger Plugin Service that allows transparent authorization API calls between C-based Apache HAWQ and Java-based Apache Ranger.

Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) is still a widely-used pattern to move data between different systems via batch processing. Due to its challenges in today’s world where real time is the new standard, an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) is used in many enterprises as integration backbone between any kind of microservice, legacy application or cloud service to move data via SOAP / REST Web Services or other technologies. Stream Processing is often added as its own component in the enterprise architecture for correlation of different events to implement contextual rules and stateful analytics. Using all these components introduces challenges and complexities in development and operations.
This session discusses how teams in different industries solve these challenges by building a native streaming platform from the ground up instead of using ETL and ESB tools in their architecture. This allows to build and deploy independent, mission-critical streaming real time application and microservices. The architecture leverages distributed processing and fault-tolerance with fast failover, no-downtime rolling deployments and the ability to reprocess events, so you can recalculate output when your code changes. Integration and Stream Processing are still key functionality but can be realized in real time natively instead of using additional ETL, ESB or Stream Processing tools.

What if my data is already in order? Stream Processing has given us an elegant and powerful solution for running analytic queries and logic over high volumes of continuously arriving data. However, in both Apache Flink and Apache Beam, the notion of time-ordering is baked in at a very low level, making it difficult to express computations that are interested in a semantic-, rather than time-ordering of the data. In financial services, what often matters the most about the data moving between systems is not when the data was created, but in what order, to the extent that many institutions engineer a global sequencing over all data entering and produced by their systems to achieve complete determinism. How, then, can financial institutions and others best employ Stream Processing on streams of data that are already ordered? I will cover various techniques that can make this work, as well as seek input from the community on how Flink might be improved to better support these use-cases.

Kubernetes has first class support on Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure.
Unlike YARN, Kubernetes started as a general purpose orchestration framework with a focus on serving jobs. Support for long-running, data intensive batch workloads required some careful design decisions. Engineers across several organizations have been working on Kubernetes support as a cluster scheduler backend within Spark. During this process, we encountered several challenges in translating Spark considerations into idiomatic Kubernetes constructs. In this talk, we describe the challenges and the ways in which we solved them. This talk will be technical and is aimed at people who are looking to run Spark effectively on their clusters. The talk assumes basic familiarity with cluster orchestration and containers.

Being in the payments space, Stripe requires strict correctness and freshness guarantees. We rely on Flink as the natural solution for delivering on this in support of our Change Data Capture (CDC) infrastructure. We heavily rely on CDC as a tool for capturing data change streams from our databases without critically impacting database reliability, scalability, and maintainability. Data derived from these streams is used broadly across the business and powers many of our critical financial reporting systems totalling over $640 Billion in payment volume annually. We use many components of Flink’s flexible DataStream API to perform aggregations and abstract away the complexities of stream processing from our downstreams. In this talk, we’ll walk through our experience from the very beginning to what we have in production today. We’ll share stories around the technical details and trade-offs we encountered along the way.

Ranger’s pluggable architecture allows resource access policy administration and enforcement for standard and custom services from a “single pane of glass”. Apache Ranger has a rich Authorization Model, which provides the mechanism to author Policy in a Ranger Admin Server and serves as policy decision and audit point in authorizing user’s resource access within various components of Hadoop ecosystem.
This session will provide a deep dive into Ranger framework and a cook-book for extending Ranger to do authorization / auditing on resource access to external applications, including technical details of Rest APIs, Ranger policy engine and enriching authorization requests, with a demo of a sample application.We will then demonstrate a real-world example of how Ranger has simplified security enforcement for Hadoop-native MPP SQL engine like Apache HAWQ (incubating),which previously used its built-in Postgres-like authorization mechanisms. The integration design includes a Ranger Plugin Service that allows transparent authorization API calls between C-based Apache HAWQ and Java-based Apache Ranger.

As part of the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, NERSC at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and ALCF at Argonne National Lab are working closely with General Atomics on accelerating the computing requirements of the DIII-D experiment. As part of the work the team is investigating ways to speedup the time to solution for many different parts of the DIII-D workflow including how they run jobs on HPC systems. One of these routes is looking at Globus Compute as a way to replace the current method for managing tasks and we describe a brief proof of concept showing how Globus Compute could help to schedule jobs and be a tool to connect compute at different facilities.
Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

Cross-facility research orchestration comes with ever-changing constraints regarding the availability and suitability of various compute and data resources. In short, a flexible data and processing fabric is needed to enable the dynamic redirection of data and compute tasks throughout the lifecycle of an experiment. In this talk, we illustrate how we easily leveraged Globus services to instrument the ACE research testbed at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility with flexible data and task orchestration capabilities.
