Traditionally, normative ethics (also known as moral theory) was the study of what makes actions right and wrong. These theories offered an overarching moral principle one could appeal to in resolving difficult moral decisions.

Ethics is concerned with human conduct, more specifically the behaviour of individuals in society.
It studies what is morally right or wrong, just or unjust.
Ethics is concerned with human independence when it focuses on the relationship that exists between humans and the world.
Example: Handling the customers patiently and understanding their problems and solving it by valuing them.
Public relationships involve relations which are formal in nature. This can include co-workers, government officials, or strangers. Ethics in public relations can come into play at:
Social Ethics – tolerance towards other sections, peace and harmony etc.
Political Ethics – constitutional ethics, national interest etc.
Organisational Ethics – impartiality, honesty, hard work, efficiency, .
International Ethics – ethics in diplomacy, respecting international treaties etc.

INTRODUCTION
Often ambiguous and unexpected, ethical dilemmas are part of the challenge of
working in today’s health care organization. While individuals approach ethical
questions differently and generate their own unique responses, a basic framework
for ethical decision making does exist and can be a useful tool for health care man-
agers. Throughout the decision-making process, managers need to be aware of what
influences their ethics. Proactive managers can establish and encourage high ethi-
cal standards. Socially responsible behavior extends beyond ethics, encouraging
health care managers to make a difference in patients’ lives and the world at large.
2.1 Acting Ethically
Ethics are a collection of moral principles that set standards of good or bad, or
right or wrong, in one’s conduct and thereby guide the behavior of a person or
group within an organization.1 Ethics help people make choices among alterna-
tive courses of action. Ethical behavior is what is accepted to be “good” and
“right” as opposed to “bad” or “wrong” in the context of the governing moral
code. For example, is it ethical to
▲ take longer than necessary to do a job?
▲ make personal telephone calls on company time?
▲ call in sick and then take the day off for leisure activities?
▲ fail to report rule violations by a co-worker?
None of these acts is strictly illegal, but many people consider one or more of
them to be unethical. Indeed, most ethical problems arise when people are asked
to do .

Importance of Business Ethics:
Ethical behaviour and corporate social responsibility can bring significant benefits to a business. For example, they may:
· attract customers to the firm's products, thereby boosting sales and profits
· make employees want to stay with the business, reduce labour turnover and therefore increase productivity
· attract more employees wanting to work for the business, reduce recruitment costs and enable the company to get the most talented employees
· attract investors and keep the company's share price high, thereby protecting the business from takeover.
Ethical motivation:
· Employees working for an organization will feel better about themselves and therefore more motivated to work hard.
· Ethical employee = happy employee = motivated employee = productive employee
Balance the needs and wishes of stakeholders:
· Business are not just about money they are about giving back to society, the community.
· Those companies that do so will also have an enhanced reputation and be more profitable.
· There is pressure on business to recognize its responsibilities to society. Business ethics requires businesses to think about the impact of its decisions on people or stakeholders who are directly or indirectly affected by those decisions.
Global challenges:
· Need to learn about the different values and cultures of the regions it operates in.
· Don’t want to offend.
· Lose reputation, lose business.
Ethical pay-off:
· Organizations risk not only losing customers and employees, but being exposed to civil and criminal liability.
· Sound ethical policy reduced risk exposure.
Employee Retention:
· Danger of losing employees who don’t want to work for an unethical organization.
· Significant costs involved in replacing key people.
Prevention & Reduction of Criminal Penalties:
· In addition to the loss of reputation and business, nobody really want to end up in court or even worse jail.
The US Sentencing Commission Guidelines state that to receive a 40% reduction in federal penalties, a company must have “an effective program to detect and prevent violations of the law”.
Preventing civil lawsuits:
· In additional to criminal offences, organizations need to be vigilant to civil offences.
· Discrimination, sexual harassment, favoritism big concerns.
