The government increased the interest rate on employees' provident funds to 9.5% but any amount over 8.5% will be taxed, reducing the actual benefit to workers. While the labor ministry intended the additional 1% as a gift, it will instead be taxable income. EPFO manages over 50 million provident fund accounts and faces issues with deducting taxes and providing tax forms for the higher interest amount. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee believes displacement due to mining should be addressed through compensation and making tribes beneficiaries of economic development, rather than stopping mining entirely. The government is considering having tribes receive 26% of mining project profits but differences remain within the government on this proposal.
