Compare and Contrast Two Works of Art
Anthony Arteaga
Art History Ancient World
Homework Assignment #1
Compare and contrast the subject, concept, and the Formal Element of the two works of art.
Also, explain which category this work falls in. The two pieces I have chosen can be found on
page 200, figure 6 51, Battle of Centaurs and Wild Beasts from Hadrian s Villa and on page 434,
figure 14 8, Battle of the Bird and Serpent. Not only did I choose these pieces for their beauty, but
also because both works have similar yet different subjects, concepts, and formal elements. Both of
these images have subject matter that is the same even though they re different.
The subjects for the Battle of Centaurs and Wild Beasts from Hadrian s Villa are animals; centaurs

Also, the shapes in the background are fuzzier and assumed in piece one where the shapes in piece
two are sharper and more defined. Another formal element is texture. The first piece, according to
the text, is a floor mosaic which is composed of many colored tesserae that were laid down in
irregular, curving lines, which effectively imitated painted brushstrokes. The individual tiles are
more apparent when viewed closely. This gives the piece a grainy and earthy texture, where it
physically looks bumpy. The textbook says it has foreshortening, the illusion created on a flat
surface in which figures and objects appear to recede or project sharply into space. The second
piece was drawn with tempera on parchment. This makes the piece look smooth, flat, and two
dimensional. The next element is color. The hues in both pieces are relatively earth toned. Both
pieces have a low level of saturation. In piece one, the sky is mustard brown with a section of mint
green that frames the boulder that the male centaur is holding. The rocky scenery has browns and
creams with a dull green and brown center. A bright green patch of pine trees is in the corner that
contrasts with the sky and rocks. The colors to the second piece are similar in the sense that it has
low saturation. The colors are dull and warm. This piece utilizes reds and oranges, in the serpent,
that the first piece does not. Because of the tan

The New Curriculum For The Foundation Stage
In 2008 the new curriculum for the foundation stage in wales began its roll out. Its aim was to
bring consistency and continuity to children s education, thus transforming early year s education
in Wales. The principles on which the curriculum is based are that children should be provided
with a good basis for future learningand the ability to apply their learning to everyday situations.
Leighton Andrews, the former educationminister, said in an article on the Welsh Government
website that the curriculum was designed to allow all children to flourish whatever their stage
of development or learning ability (Andrews, 2010). The Framework for Children s Learning for
3 to 7 Year olds in Wales (here forth known as The Framework ) outlines 7 key areas of learning.
These are Personal and social development, well being and cultural diversity , Language, literacy
and communication skills , Mathematical development , Welsh language development , Knowledge
and understanding of the world , Physical development and Creative development . The curriculum
focuses on holistic learning, meaning that whilst there are 7 separate areas of learning, they are to
be taught in a way which entwines them together allowing for children to develop skills such as
everyday problem solving by understanding that mathematics is not merely a school subject but a
skill which is used in everyday life.
This essay will explore the ways in which the curriculum should be delivered to foundation stage

Juicing Health Benefits
From Hollywood divas to health gurus and nutritionists, everyone is talking about the health
benefits of juicing. Drinking fresh fruit and vegetable juices can improve your health and well
being, strengthen your immune system, and cleanse your body from the inside out. Science seems
to support these claims, so make sure you include juices in your diet.
How Does Juicing Work?
Juice cleanses are becoming more and more popular. Some people use them for detox. Others
replace one or more meals with fresh juices to shed fat or maintain their weight. A typical juice
cleanse involves drinking at least 16 ounces of juice every few hours, plus a lot of water, for three
days or more. For optimal results, give up solid food or stick to fresh fruits

12 Angry Men Justice
12 Angry Men is a movie about 12 jurors determining a man s innocence and guilt. A boy is
accused of stabbing his father to death and if found guilty will be sentenced to death. The movie
presents a diverse group of 12 jurors with diverse traits. The movie illustrates the advantages and
disadvantages of verdictmaking, group progressive phases, headship qualities and models, social
influence strategies and endings, and the foundations of social supremacy.
All through the production, we see two conflicting outlooks of fairness. From 8th Juror and others,
as they link, we see an angle of justice that favors the defendant and that desires most for him to
have a fair minded chance. To 8th Juror, the teenager s poor and uneasy background, his careless
state appointed defense counsel, and the jury s fast near decisive verdict to find him guilty are all
uncivilized forms of unfairness. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
6th Juror says this most clearly, saying, Suppose you talk us outta this and the kid really did knife
his father? This style of justice rest on revenge and reprisal. Rose shows off the mutual nature of
justice to construct tautness and compare the characters. Each character wishes for justice, but what
justice comes to be imprecise and unsolidified during the development of the movie.
Prejudgment is witnessed on numerous levels during the course of the movie. In the most
recognizable sense, the movie deals with cultural bias. While, evidently, the race of the accused is
never sure, we do realize that he is a minority of some class and this hastily converts in to a intense
dispute between the jurors, especially for the 9th Juror who mentions to the defendant as one of

Car Hunting Research Paper
The majority of the population has or at least drives a car. One uses the car for transportation to
work, school, doctors appointments, grocery shopping, you end up using the car so much the
transmission gives out. You have no other choice but to buy a new/used car. So what is the first
thing you do or look at when car hunting?
You probably go to a dealer or check Craigslist. But before you do that you have to have in mind
what type of model and year of the car you want. Then you think about the color, and the type of
body: do you want a coupe, a sedan, a truck, van, or an 8 wheeler? What I have just mentioned
applies to all cars in general. The following will depend on whether you want a used or new car.

Usually a clean title means the car has not been crashed, totaled or in an accident but can have
previous owners and does not have any claims or loans to it. If you buy a car from the original
owner you have hit the jackpot. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, a lien is ... a legal
claim that someone or something has on the property of another person until a debt has been paid
back. So basically if you buy a car with a lien title you will not know if the car has been paid off or
not. Lastly, a salvage title is definitely not worth it if you not a businessperson. There are people
who buy salvage cars and repair them to the best possible and make a profit from them. Then there
are people like me, who do not make a living from repairing cars, which is why we do not gain
anything and should not buy a salvage car. Salvaged titles are given to cars that have been in grave
accidents and totaled. Like the windshield and rear can be gone and business people would buy it if
they can make a flip from it. To see if you are getting a good deal, you should check on Kelley s

Freedom of Expression and Rap Music Essay
Many issues have come up regarding what rights and actions are protected under the First
Amendment. Rap music should not be restricted on the television despite much controversy over
the idea. Bok says that some acts cause debates, although people may disagree with it doesn t mean
it should be taken away. There should be no restrictions held against playing of rap music. Music
that we listen to constructs the sound track of our lives. The number one killer in creative speech is
censorship. Censorship in music is a topic that has brought about much controversy in the past two
decades. Preventing or punishing speech?is a clear violation of the First Amendment. (Censorship.

(Zhar). Lawrence states that ?Blacks and other people of color are skeptical about the argument that
even the most injurious speech must remain unregulated because, in an unregulated marketplace of
ideas, the best ones will rise to the top and gain acceptance.
If the music is found to be so bad, then why are the parents not using the channel blocker on the
channels that allow the music. Deciding what children should see and hear in my opinion is a
parent s chore and right to decide, not the governments. ?As long as gratuitous violence and sex
aren t being seen with Saturday morning cartoons, then what we have now is fine. When parents
choose to ignore the ratings that are displayed on CD s, movies and television shows, and their
children view or hear something graphic, it is the parents fault not the artist s. There is no doubt
that everything we hear and see in the media isn t going to rub us the right way but, that s the
beauty of the first amendment? (Mariah Carey). Like Kilbourne states kids are easily influenced by
what they hear and see.
Not all rap music is about swearing, degrading woman and so forth. Many songs actually have
meanings that the rappers try to portray to people. When artists create music that is senseless it
can cloud people s judgment towards the music type they are representing. A lot of rappers rap
about cars, jewelry, sex, and murder and refer to themselves as keeping it real . So many people
believe that rap music is based

Biography of Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn
Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn was the premier artist in 17th century Europe during the great
Golden Age of Dutch painting, well known for his Dutch Baroque style of art that lead to his title
as one of the greatest painters in history. His incredible brush technique and his masterful
appreciation of human nature combined to create a humongous impact on his peers as well as
influencing tons of artists of later years.1 He was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden, Netherlands, a
small city located in the Dutch province of South Holland. Rembrandtwas born into a large family,
the eighth of nine children. His father, Harmen Gerritsz van Rijn, was a miller, and his mother,
Neeltgen Willemsd van Zuytbroeck, was the daughter of a baker. Rembrandt studied at Latin
school for seven years before enrolling in university in 1620, before leaving after only a few
months to become an apprentice to the painter for Jacob Isaacsz van Swanenburgh.2 After working
under Jacob Isaacsz van Swanenburgh for three years, Rembrandt left for Amsterdam, to work with
Pieter Lastman, in 1624. While many artists in the 17th century felt like they needed to travel to
Italy to fulfill their artistic training, Rembrandt never left Holland once in his entire life, taking
pride in his Dutch nationality.3 Pieter Lastman was one of the most respected experts in historical
paintings in all of Holland, as his inspiration in his works came mostly from mythological,
historical, and biblical scenes. Like Lastman,

Poverty And Inequality In Ethiopia
Statement of the Problem
Poverty and inequality are a concern to both developing and developed nations across the world
(Melamed, 2014; Shepherd et al., 2014). These problems are more serious in developing countries
like Ethiopia (UNDP, 2013). Poverty is so widespread and prevalent in Ethiopia that the country is
amongst the poorest nations in the world (UNDP, 2013).
Recently, Ethiopian government claimed that poverty and inequality are declining in all regions
(MoFED, 2013). However, empirical literature shows that poverty, in general, and chronic and
transitory poverty, in particular, have long history in rural areas and show growing trends (Adugna,
2012).
For sustained fight against rural poverty and inequality; and for realization of poverty and
inequality free Ethiopia, there is a need to design pro poor and location specific poverty and

In large part, this has reflected the emerging understanding that, in order to reduce poverty,
policymakers need information on both the current incidence of poverty and also the magnitude
of the threat of poverty, measured ex ante (Calvo and Dercon, 2005). Such a perspective
implicitly recognises that poverty is a stochastic phenomenon. To that end, while the current
incidence of poverty is a critical indicator of wellbeing it provides limited foresight into future
poverty. Rather, whether a household is likely to fall into poverty in the future is also determined
by its exposure to a variety of different shocks as well as its ability to effectively cope in the face of
shocks.
Yet little empirical work has been done that examines the vulnerability of households in Melanesian
countries, such as Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands to experiencing povetry. This is despite the
fact that both countries are renowned for being acutely vulnerable to economic and environmental
shocks at a national

Analysis Of The Starry Night By Vincent Van Gogh
The Starry Night portrait was created by the Dutch post impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh
during the period of the 20th century renaissance. This masterpiece was one of Vincent van Gogh
well known painting in the history of art which brought him fame. The Starry Night was so popular
because of this painting represents star that makes you dream. This masterpiece was painted on
June 1889 during his stay at the asylum of Saint Paul de Mausole near Saint RГ©my de Provence.
During the time he created this masterpiece, Vincent van Goghlive in a hospital while he continues
to make this art when he was ill.
The artist of this painting was named Vincent van Gogh and he was born on the 30th of March in
1853. He was known to be a self taught painter of the post impressionist style. Post impressionism
was used to describe the development of French art since Manet. Vincent van Gogh artist style was
to practice the uses of bright colors, distinctive brush strokes, thick application of paint, and
unwavering subject matter about the realities of life in this masterpiece. Vincent van Gogh found
his place in art and produced emotional and visually attractive paintings over the course of a career
that lasted about a decade.
The reason why Vincent van Gogh created the portray called The Starry Nightwas because he
began to suffer hallucination and have thoughts of suicide as he plunged into depression. Just
before sunrise, he was inspired by the east facing window view of his asylum room at Saint
RГ©my de Provence which he later uses his imagination to create the artwork. The Starry Night
masterpiece was based on van Gogh s direct observations as well as his imagination, memories,
and emotions of the sunset at the asylum. He also wrote a letter to his brother Theo van Gogh
about him seeing an amazing view which was stated: This morning I saw the country from my
window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big .
This part of the letter was evidence that he created The Starry Night because he was inspired by the
view and use his imagination to paint the picture with oil painting. The Starry Night masterpiece
features a scene of a Dutch looking town that was mainly composed of

Poverty In George Jurgis s The Jungle
In the book The Jungle there are many different themes, moods, and political views. One of the
major themes in this book is that most people are poor. They don t have a whole lot they squeeze
by on taxes, and some don t even have homes. Most don t even have enough money to eat every
day. Then to go along with being in poverty their moods are just depressed, sad, and gloomy. In the
book things would start turning for the better, then something tragic would happen. In the book
there is a lot politics going on the author tried to push socialism, but by showing what went on in
the meatindustry, it made people put in health codes. In the book The Junglea majority of the people
that live in packingtown live in poverty. They don t really have a steady job that pays well
enough to get out of debt or get nice things. The whole town is really dishonest, you can t trust
anyone. It s really everyone for themselves and to help their calamity s turn to a life of crime.
They steal from businesses and pick pocket people. These people that do this, were once nice
people that believed they could make it in America and become rich, but then reality started to
set in so they had to do things to just scrape by. Jurgis the main character, when he came to
America he believed he could become rich and be a millionaire, but he soon realized its not easy
and he s going to have to work hard. Even doing that still didn t get him where he wanted to be so
he had to take odd jobs to get extra income, by doing this he became dishonest. The name of the
book basically explains what life is in packingtown. Either you eat or be eaten, you do what you
have to do to better yourself. Most people don t survive in this town because of harsh working
conditions, low pay, high debt, but one major theme that summarizes the whole town except the
greedy bosses are poor no one really has a whole lot. People barely scrape by on taxes and debt.
They have a home, but it isn t a at least a decent home. Jugis s house had really bad floors there
was a sewage system right under them. Then to go along with that during the winter the heater
wasn t very big so they had to wear coats. The family was always depressed, so Jurgis would

The Truth: The Reality of Alcohol s Effect on America
The term alcohol is such a casual term in America. Few people think twice about it. We Americans
think we know everything about it, but do we really? The truth is, alcohol is in fact a drug. It is not
one to take lightly either. Whenever an American sees a couple of guys drinking beers at a bar
or a couple in love having a glass of wine, those people are really just doing drugs and trying to
get a high. But few people see it like that; how it truthfully is. Alcohol has a lot of the same
characteristics and attributes as many illegal drugs that people consider so dire. Alcohol kills
people, ruins relationships, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because alcohol is legal and so pervasive, it plays a major role in the world of crime. According
to a recent article, Alcohol is a factor in 40 percent of all violent crimes today. According to the
Department of Justice, 37 percent of almost two million convicted offenders currently in jail, report
that they were drinking at the time of their arrest. (National Council on Alcoholism and Drug
Dependence) Sadly, alcohol is most frequently correlated with offenses of murder, rape, assault,
and child and spousal abuse. Aside from crime, alcohol takes a heavy toll on the American
economy. It is estimated that the cost of excessive alcohol consumption in the United States
totaled about $223.5 billion in 2006 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). This equates to
about $1.90 per drink; meaning that for every drink bought, it is costing taxpayers about $1.90.
Further research indicates that in these $223.5 billion represent loss in workplace productivity,
health care expenses, criminal justice expenses, and motor vehicle crashes. It is now apparent that
the effects of alcohol not only impacts those who are directly affected by crime or physical
complications by the drug, but it strikes every single American in their bank

Ethical Dilemmas And Moral Courage
Abstract In today s healthcare environment nurses are faced with increasingly intricate ethical
dilemmas. We encounter these dilemmas in situations where our ability to do the right thing is
continuously delayed by conflicting values and beliefs of other healthcare providers. There are
many nurses who face these ethical issues head on and others who put it aside. Keeping our
commitment to patients requires moral courage. Moral courage aids us in addressing ethical
issues and making the correct decision when it is being contradicted. It involves the willingness to
speak out and do what is right in the face of forces that would lead us to act in an unethical way.
Nurses who have moral courage and advocate in the best interest of the client may have to endure
adverse outcomes. It is important that nurses begin to create a work environment in which moral
courage is supported. Nurses in all types of settings face ethical dilemmas. An ethical dilemma is a
complex situation that often involves an apparent mental conflict between moral imperatives, in
which to obey one would result in transgressing another. Having moral courage as a nurse in the
healthcare environment is very important. A nurse who presents moral courage stands up to ethical
issues that may affect the client and even themselves. As nurses it is our responsibility to put our
patient first, and that includes fighting for what is right and not being put in situations in which our
ability to provide care

Crime And Violence In Colombia
South America has been known to be a major drug supplier for the United States and the rest of the
world. Colombia, in particular, in the past and in the present has had issues with crime and violence
inside of its borders. The violence and growth of gangs stems from the drug production and youth
recruitment that is common in Colombia today. These two factors are what has caused Colombia to
experience internal conflict among the Colombian citizens.
With being located in a suitable environment for growing drugs, Colombia has been a leading
nation for the production of drugs, especially cocaine (Blake). From the production of these drugs,
there comes a great deal of power and wealth. Drug production can produce immense profits for
these gangs. These huge profits from the drug industry are then turned into guns for further
fighting ( The Colombian Cartel ). By turning all their cash into guns, the gangs are just adding to
the violence within Colombia. The profits from the drug production have a direct connection to
the violence that is becoming progressively prevalent. For example, Colombia has a violence rate
for every 100,000 people of 37.61, whereas European countries such as France (1.07), ... Show

The information system is a combination of software, hardware, data, people and procedure. It is
not solely depending on the technology, interactions between people also counts. In this case,
multiple reasons have caused the situation in this case: (1) Ignorance of the real situation: The
new technology may meet the needs of the hotel. However, the task stated by the GM can be
done in a much easier and cheaper ways. For example, they can require employees to use written
form reports in order to reduce the slippage percentage and reoccurring problems. Reporting every
problem real time may cause extra work for maintenance. Gathering all the problems in a period
of time and report them afterward may be more efficient, besides, the additional cost can be
greatly reduced. (2) Did not take employees into consideration: In this case I am aware that the
employees are interested in the new technology first, but soon lose that interest . It could be caused
by the hard operation of the new system, thus the teaching may took a long time. While the old
method is much easier and have been used for a long period, to change this habit can be tough. (3)
Time limitation: We can see from the case that Blake only have one week to do his job. Although
main research has been done during this time including the funding investment and negotiation with

The Musical, My Fair Lady Directed By George Cukor
Critical Review This critical review is about the musical, My Fair Lady, directed by George
Cukor based on the play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw. This musical altered some of the
scenes and added new ones. The basic storyline of the text is about a young flower girl that runs
into a phonetics teacher who claims that he could sell her as a duchess. The flower girl, which
is later known to be Eliza, takes up the offer and starts speech lessons with the teacher, Mr.
Higgins. He coachers her night and day to prepare her for a race and an embassy ball where she
will meet royalty. Mr. Higgins is also acquainted in the beginning with one of his respected
colleagues who also specialize in phonetics, Colonel Pickering. Although, Higgins treats her as
baggage he soon gets attached to her and her ways. Colonel Pickering however, treats her as a
respectable lady. She has a great success at the ball but is not recognized for it, which
disappoints her. She decides to run away to Mrs. Higgins house where she found by Higgins and
Pickering. She organizes her thoughts with Higgins and says she will never come back to them
but at the end of the movie, not the play, she comes back to Higgins and Pickering. The main
play and musical is based off of a similar storyline which goes something like this: There is a
young flower girl who has a cockney accent which prevents her from getting a nice high paying
job. Her dream is to work in a flower shop as an assistant. She runs into a phonetics

Military Rules of Engagement and the Laws of War
Military Rules of Engagement (ROE) and the Laws of War A civilized society cannot function
without rules, laws, and codes of proper conduct. This statement may seem out of place in the
context of warfighting; however, this is one place where it is most necessary. The fighters, who
often act at the behest of their home nation, must have a code of conduct which allows them to
make the correct decision in a given situation in a combat zone. Rules of Engagement fill this
gap for the national militaries of the civilized world and serve as a soldier s code of conduct in
the field. Similar to Rules of Engagement (ROE) are the Laws of War . The Laws of War were
established as an international agreement. This agreement attempted to curtail the destruction
caused by global conflicts such as the two world wars fought during the twentieth century. The
laws of war fall under the Geneva conventions as well. Each of set of rules can be used as a
foundation to create rules of engagement for a particular mission. It is also important to align rules
of engagement with the uniform code of militaryjustice. This code, referred to as the UCMJ, is
used as legal framework for the United States Military.
Definition
Rules of Engagement for the military, as defined by Encyclopedia Britannica, are:
Military directives meant to describe the circumstances under which ground, naval, and air forces

Types Of Anesthesia As A Patient
What is anesthesiology? Breaking this word down will help define it, that way it is easier to
understand. In medical terms, the word anesthesiology is constructed of three different words, each
having a specific definition: an is defined as being without, or the absence ; esthesia means feeling
; and ology is defined as the study of. So when these three words are constructed together it is
defined as the study of the absence of feeling. Knowing that definition of anesthesiology is one
thing, but there are other things that must be known, such as the different types of anesthesia. There
are several types of anesthesia. The form of anesthesia a patient will receive will be determined by
the medical state and the surgical procedure the patient will undergo. Along with anesthetics, a
patient may receive a sedative administered by the anesthesiologist. The three main forms of
anesthesia include: local anesthesia; regional anesthesia; and general anesthesia.
Local anesthesia is used when a patient is undergoing a minimally invasive procedure like a port
placement, or some carpal injections. The most common forms of local anesthesia are: infiltration
anesthesia; nerve blocks; haematoma blocks; intravenous regional block; and extradural and
spinal anesthesia. These procedures are relatively quick and rarely take longer than a few
minutes. It is used on a select area of the body to briefly stop the sense of pain. A benefit of local

Kenya Morris Sherman Essay
Cynthia Morris Sherman, better known as Cindy Sherman, is a heavily renowned American
photographer. Known best for her unique conceptual portraits. Throughout her early work,
Sherman, made her message clear, depicting women s role throughout society. Commenting
extensively on
American sexism during the 1970s. Through this communication, her style was made clear,
allowing it to evolve in the future.
Firstly, it was essentially extremely eccentric, focusing heavily on the experimental movements of
the time period. This style all began through untitled stills, in which she is still most popular for to
this day.
Sherman s style through these stills put her on the map immediately in the New York scene. An

Second off, her style was a complex, ever changing wheel of emotion. Sherman utilized self
portraiture as well as role playing, as shown previously in her untitled film stills. Often, these early
stills maintained a black and white aesthetic, not particularly focusing heavily on details, but rather
the reasoning for what was there as well as what it meant. This made ,most of the early stills very
bare bones to the point. This maintained a grounded level for each portrait, keeping the message
and character portrayed a little vague yet understandable with thought. The main common subject
among all of these images, Sherman is dead center. Due to the fact that these are self portraits, the
viewer s eyes always fall upon her, in which it s the same case among the untitled stills.
Thirdly, Sherman s technique may be one of the most unique throughout artistic history. Within her
work, an approach extremely influenced by portrait photography is present. Due to the fact of this,
she approached her portraits with a single feature in focus. She kept this same technique for the vast

Although Foucault believes that people are not the authors of society, discourses are governed
independently of anyone s purpose (Learning Companion 2), the institutions he mentions help to
keep order in society, although he is concerned about who can claim the authority of who has the
power to rule how others should behave (Foucault cited by Silva, 2009, p319). When looking at
Buchanans report I have found his findings to be similar to Foucaults in the way that they
believe that rules have to be in place to have social order in society; Buchanan was
commissioned to do his report by the UK government in 1961 which was Traffic in Towns aimed
at finding solutions for urban space to accommodate pedestrians and cars. He found that social
order was linked to the segregation of humans and motor vehicles and the need to create an array
of measures in urban design for the regulation of the conduct of drivers and pedestrians, this vision
is in contrast to Mondermans thesis of a shared approach. Buchanans model assumes individuals
should conform to rules and a state that solves problems and looks after individual behaviour by
having rules in place to help control situations (Buchanan cited by Silva, 2009, p341). When

cracking of my ignited fireplace. The smell of cherry like oak, mixed with buttery, pumpkin
spiced bread stuffed the air. I was snug in a wool blanket, my fingers heated on a hearty chunk of
a toasted loaf. I was blissfully plucking tiny chunks, and chewing it with glee. Awaiting my big
sibling to arrive from home, I was jumpy, and impatient. *Creak, bmph* My ears perked up, and I

battle Canadians used a new strategy. Canada was led by Arthur Currie who was a great strategist
as well as the first Canadian to have the rank of general. The battle of Vimy Ridge made a

War at Sea 1914: This war provided the first test of Canada s Royal Navy. The Germans had

German Navy from the Atlantic and the Pacific, especially by the German submarines. In 1914
there were no signs of battle happening from the Germans until later. So, Canada was expanding
its navy as quickly as it can. This battle happened in 1918. This was a big significance to Canada
because it showed that Canada s own Navy; without Britain s help is successful.
Hundred Days: Hundred days were the last hundred days of World War One. There were couple
of battles and/ or events. One of the battles were fought in Ameins. Canada and its allies attacked
and captured 13km of land in one day. At the end, German forces were forced to retreat. This was

to change the way I work on things, but changing my mentality on organization, multi tasking, and

decreasing the necessity of late night working sessions, inevitably reducing the intense feelings of

Wicca In American Culture
What is Wicca? IN today s culture, it is all too easy to confuse the Wiccan religion with those of
the satanic nature we see in movies and on TV shows. However, I have found that we as people
outside looking in have been easily influences by the media.
With respect to the Wicca culture, I chose to explore 3 significant pieces that I also found in the

conducting my research, I found that Wicca is no cult, or outlandish following that people cannot
relate to. Rather, it takes spirituality, religion, and the mind, and marry them together, creating an
existence of people who are constantly fighting the split between the mind, nature, and the body.

History And Philosophy Of Ancient Philosophy

History of Ancient Philosophy
Fall 2016
Final Exam Sec. A (10:00)
Question #1 A principle is a fundamental source or basis of something. A principle cannot be
proven, because to prove something we have to go back to the basics and principle is basis of
everything. Although, what most philosophers seem to be doing to prove the validity of their
theories is by showing that if we accept something else as a principle it would make no sense.
The Pre Socratic philosophers were all searching for that one fundamental principle of reality
that everything is based on. That factor was called arche, which literally means beginning, origin
or a source of something. The Pre Socratic philosophers are called that because they all came
before Socrates, and he is a major figure in ancient philosophy, because he was the first person to
develop it as a distinct kind of knowledge. Most of the early philosophers were looking for a
materialistic arche.
Thales of Miletus (624 546 BC) is considered to be the first philosopher and he considered water
to be the fundamental principle of everything. He thought that all things were composed of water,
because it could take all three forms (liquid, solid and gas). He also observed that all living things
needed water to stay alive and grow. Aristotle wrote about Thales views: nourishment of all things

Theme Of Women In Oliver Twist
Dickens wrote in the Victorian era when women were supposed to be at home and perform
domestic tasks. The Victorians admired women that were sexually pure and capable of self
sacrifice. To be pure was not easy in the Victorian era, especially not for the women that may
have to prostitute themselves in order to survive. Dickens was well aware that these women
were victims of society, poverty and men, and he criticized the cruelty of the Victorian society
and peoples view of fallen women. Oliver Twist is an example of such criticism. Fallen women
did not get a second chance in life. Women had a particularly hard time making a living. Oliver
Twist spends his first ten years in a workhouse as an orphan, mistreated, abused and belonging to
the lowest class in society. Dickens Oliver Twist contains several themes, including prostitution,
thievery and fencing. The characters in Oliver Twist can be divided into groups of good and evil.
The groups are very different from each other but they all have one thing in common, they struggle
with moral issues. To have good morals and virtues was very important in the Victorian era,
especially for women. The British middle class women were at home taking care of the household

The Effects Of Natural Resources On The Environment
Since the Industrial Revolution, natural resources have been under increasing pressure. The
significant changes in the amount of natural resources we have left have led to many issues,
such as global public health and global development. Other areas affected include the loss of
forest, water and air pollution, decrease in fresh water supply and degradation of soil. Today we
are currently seeing dramatic increases in global population. As the world s population continues to
rise, natural resources will continue to dwindle as long as we remain the same. The one thing that I
would say is the most challenging for humans is being able to advance in life, but still not destroy
the environment. If you look at most developed countries, it is evident that they consume resources
way more rapidly than developing countries. The problem with this is that all of these countries are
consuming faster than they can produce. Places like Africa and Asia are experiencing population
momentum. These areas have a tendency for population growth that continues to grow because of
the high concentration of people having kids. Better living conditions are definitely needed in these
countries because of the limited amount of resources being consumed by these regions. The over
exploitation of these resources will eventually lead to problems for future uses. As population
increases, the need to expand becomes more evident. The huge consumption and need for more
food, land, water, and energy have

Growing up we all had expectations of who we should be imposed upon us by our parents.
Whether or not we achieved those expectations upon reaching adulthood isn t really the final
outcome. There is a greater lesson learned regardless of how we benefited from the imposition. And
that realization is what truly shapes our final character. Raymond Carver entertains this topic in his

The young man continues in the description saying, In jeans and denim shirt, he leans against
the front fender of a 1934 Ford (6 7). These details help to set up the false image the young man s
father is trying to convey. Upon growing up and then looking back on his father, the young man
is able to provide the retrospective comment, He would like to pose bluff and hearty for his
posterity, wear his old hat cocked over his ear (8 9). This statement illustrates the fact that the
young man, upon looking back, has realized that his father desperately tried to project a self
image uncharacteristic to his actual self. He is fully aware of whom he is looking at, but just like
the kitchen, it feels completely alien to him. The young man states that he can tell his father is
attempting to falsify his look and attitude for the sake of his son. The last line of the stanza
reinforces this idea when the son proclaims, All his life my father wanted to be bold (10). This
comment comes from a young man who has obviously lived his entire life in the shadow of a man
constantly trying to be something he wasn t. The reader gets the idea that the son was constantly
subjected to his father s influence upon him to be tough and masculine just like his dad. The last
line of the stanza relays to the reader the notion that the young man only realized his father s

The Garden By Andrew Corvel Poetry
The poet who marvelled the readers and critics alike in the last decade of the nineteenth century
through his exquisite handling of subject matter and stylistic devices is obviously Andrew
Marvell(1621 1678).Originally associated with the school of Donne ,that is , the metaphysical
school of poetry which focused on abstruse terminology, dramatic beginning, ratiocinative mode,
colloquial language, wit, pun, paradox, ambiguity and above all, the use of metaphysical
conceit; his is a veritable mosaic where he deals with varied and variegated themes. His poems
like To His Coy Mistress, The Coronet, Mourning, Last Instructions to a Painter, The Fair
Singer, The Picture of Little T.C, The Definition of Love, The Garden, The Mower s Song, An
Horatian Ode Upon Cromwell s Return from Ireland, On a Drop of Dew, Upon Appleton House,
to My Lord Fairfax are unique in matter as well as manner, theme as well as treatment, content as
well as style. In his poems, Marvell treated political, carpe diem, personal, religious and pastoral
themes. His The Garden is obviously the finest poem of the poems of rural solitude (Joseph H.
Summers, Introduction... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Rosalie L. Colie comments in My Echoing Song : Andrew Marvell s Poetry of Criticism:
The Garden itself brings to its height the tradition of Renaissance garden poetry, at the same time
refining and exploiting many other traditions not primarily associated with gardens....| (p.14)
It is significant to note that garden theme is one of the recurring and preponderant themes in
Marvell s poetry. In different poems like The Nymph Complaining, Little T.C, Upon Appleton
House Marvell represents different gardens in different ways. Whereas in The Nymph Complaining
the beautiful garden is created to satisfy the demands of the creator¬¬¬¬¬¬ the heroine,
in Upon Appleton House the garden assumes a paradisiacal stature with its pristine

Moral Hazard And The Banking System
Moral Hazard and the Banking System ACCT 6377: Corporate Governance Zachary Seay The
University of Texas at Dallas Introduction The moral hazard of bank bailouts is a very simple
idea enveloped in a very complex issue. Back in late 2007 to mid 2009 the United States and the
global economy faced one of the worst recessions the world has ever seen. In fact the time period
has been dubbed the Great Recession. Now at a broad level this recession was caused essentially
by our large banks buying and positively rating thousands upon thousands of mortgage backed
securities and collateralized debt obligations. In addition, the banks started getting to a point
where they were leveraged sometimes in excess of 30 to 1. The Federal Reserve initially
recommended banks try to stay around 10 to 1.(d) When the mortgages started to foreclose the
value of those securities plummeted and the banks started to lose solvency. With the issue of
possible banks going into bankruptcy the government of course got involved. Instead of letting
the banks fail, taxpayers instead bought up many of those toxic securities along with toxic bank
stock and set the banks free without so much as a slap on the wrist. This is what many have
come to consider a moral hazard. It is hard to tell if our actions really even helped as the economy
didn t start getting to back to normal until around 2012. Mortgage backed Securities Collateralized
Debt Obligations Mortgage backed securities and collateralized debt

The Systems Development Life Cycle Essay
The systems development life cycle (SDLC), also referred to as the application development life
cycle, is a term used in systems engineering, information systems and software engineering to
describe a process for planning, creating, testing, and deploying an information system. The
systems development life cycle concept applies to a range of hardware and software
configurations, as a system can be composed of hardware only, software only, or a combination
of both. PHASES: o1 System investigation o 2 System analysis o 3 Design o 4 Environments o
5 Testing o 6 Training and transition o 7 Operations and maintenance o 8 Evaluation The system
development life cycle framework provides a sequence of activities for system designers and
developers to follow. It consists of a set of steps or phases in which each phase of the SDLC uses
the results of the previous one. The SDLC adheres to important phases that are essential for
developers, such as planning, analysis, design, and implementation, and are explained in the section
below. It includes evaluation of present system, information gathering, feasibility and request
approval. A number of SDLC models have been created: waterfall, fountain, spiral build and fix,
rapid prototyping, incremental, and synchronize and stabilize. The oldest of these, and the best
known, is the waterfall model: a sequence of stages in which the output of each stage becomes the
input for the next. These stages can be characterized and divided up in

Stephen Kings Why We Crave Horror Films Essay
As I was lying in bed recalling the event happened an hour before I was thinking to myself that I
will never look at lightning the same way again. Thunder and lightning was still present in the
night sky as I lay there in bed thanking God I was alive and well. Each flash of lightning lit the
entire room and each clap of thunder rattled the windows of my hotel room. Lightning can seem
much more terrifying when you re up 20,000 ft in the mountains, and the thunder sounds a lot
louder too. The sound of nature s fury seemed to slowly descend as the night went on, but my nerves
did not. I was still stunned and in shock of being stuck in a lightning storm high in the mountains. I
never thought about the power and damage lightning can inflict... Show more content on

Soon the moonlight illuminated the scenery. As I was standing on the balcony admiring the
scenery something finally went wrong, a huge black cloud covered the moon. I soon heard the
thunder. It seemed to be nothing to worry about, so I didn t acknowledge it. A few hours later the
thunder grew louder and I could see the flashes of lightning headed our way. I went inside to
inform my parents of the weather, but they didn t seem to worry about it much until the cloud was
almost over the lodge. My family and I left the reception alone while everyone else stayed in cover;
they were the smart ones I thought.
We left quickly walking fast and practically running toward the gondolas so we wouldn t be
stuck on the mountain all night long. By now the storm was close and so was the lightning. The
people at the station loaded the four of us into a gondola and we slowly worked our way down
the mountain. Hanging in this tiny box of metal by a hook on a wire cable was not the most
reassuring thing. I looked out the window hoping to see the ground, but it was too dark. I could
barely see the hand in front my own face. Lightning would flash, and all I could make out were
the tops of trees. Paranoia overwhelmed me. My breaths seemed to become further and further
apart as time slowed. As I was trying to relieve my mind of worst case scenario, a big flash and
enormous rumble sounded. We stopped moving. Our gondola had

Using Mixed Methods For A Mixed Method Design
Mixed methods are a combination of both qualitative and quantitative data. According to Sherperis,
most researchers define themselves as either a qualitative or a quantitative researcher (Sherperis, C.
J., Young, J. S., Daniels, M. H. (2010). Although it seems that combining the two would be a win
win situation for the researcher as both sides are considered, it is important that there is
trustworthiness and that coding is done appropriately. Having said this, it is important that
whatever researchmethod is used, the method must be valid Laureate Education (Producer). (n.d.).
Using a mixed methods design allows for research to be broader, vast, and have more depth
(Sherperis et al., 2010). When conducting research, it has also been mentioned that Sherperis that
although researches define themselves as one or the other (qualitative or quantitative) it is not
necessary to do so. When performing a mixed methods design, one must think about how they wish
to go about this research. It is imperative to be informed so that there are no issues with validity of
the research. Cresswell (1999) has suggested the following prior to partaking in research using
mixed methods 1) Determine the order in which you will implement the qualitative and quantitative
data of your study, 2) Determine the weight that will be given to the quantitative and qualitative
data, 3) determine how the two types of data will be mixed/combined, and 4) determine the theory
that will guide your design

Death In Trobriand Culture
The Trobriand Islands of Papua New Guinea have been a landmark of anthropological study since
the early twentieth century. Anthropologists such as Bronislaw Malinowski and Annette Weiner
have written extensive ethnographies detailing the patriarchal ruling structure and matrilineal
descent style of Trobriand society. Different functionalist approaches to anthropologyhave attempted
to give meaning to the complex Trobriand culture. Perhaps one of the greatest performances of
Trobriand culture is in the case of death, which sets into motion a number of exchanges with layers
of individual, social, and cultural meanings. By examining Trobriand death rituals and analyzing
structural functionalism versus pure functionalism, a comprehensive understanding... Show more

In comparison to structural functionalism, this branch of functionalism focused on individuals and
their specific human needs, and how institutions or customs could be shown as contributing to the
culture as a whole. The tenets of pure functionalism can be best understood by analyzing the work
of Bronislaw Malinowski. A pioneer for anthropological fieldwork, Malinowski lived in the
Trobriand Islands for two years during WWI. Although he often struggled between being a person
with the capacity for feeling and being someone who is rigorously objective and disciplined,
Malinowski s fieldwork provided the first in depth analysis of Trobriand culture (Geertz, 1988, 79).
During his study, Malinowski determined that there are seven basic human needs which include
nutrition, reproduction, bodily comforts, safety, relaxation, movement, and growth (Langness,
1974, 98). He saw culture as the instrument through which these needs could be met. Like the
historicalist Franz Boas, Malinowski placed an emphasis on the individual, yet always tried to
correlate one set of activities with a cultural whole. It was with this mindset that Malinowski and
other pure functionalists attempted to understand the culture of the Trobriand Islands. Although
Malinowski went into depth on the Baloma spirit and its journey to the afterlife or Tuma, he did
not explicitly cover death rituals in the Trobriand

  • 2. Compare and Contrast Two Works of Art Anthony Arteaga Art History Ancient World Homework Assignment #1 Compare and contrast the subject, concept, and the Formal Element of the two works of art. Also, explain which category this work falls in. The two pieces I have chosen can be found on page 200, figure 6 51, Battle of Centaurs and Wild Beasts from Hadrian s Villa and on page 434, figure 14 8, Battle of the Bird and Serpent. Not only did I choose these pieces for their beauty, but also because both works have similar yet different subjects, concepts, and formal elements. Both of these images have subject matter that is the same even though they re different. The subjects for the Battle of Centaurs and Wild Beasts from Hadrian s Villa are animals; centaurs (male and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, the shapes in the background are fuzzier and assumed in piece one where the shapes in piece two are sharper and more defined. Another formal element is texture. The first piece, according to the text, is a floor mosaic which is composed of many colored tesserae that were laid down in irregular, curving lines, which effectively imitated painted brushstrokes. The individual tiles are more apparent when viewed closely. This gives the piece a grainy and earthy texture, where it physically looks bumpy. The textbook says it has foreshortening, the illusion created on a flat surface in which figures and objects appear to recede or project sharply into space. The second piece was drawn with tempera on parchment. This makes the piece look smooth, flat, and two dimensional. The next element is color. The hues in both pieces are relatively earth toned. Both pieces have a low level of saturation. In piece one, the sky is mustard brown with a section of mint green that frames the boulder that the male centaur is holding. The rocky scenery has browns and creams with a dull green and brown center. A bright green patch of pine trees is in the corner that contrasts with the sky and rocks. The colors to the second piece are similar in the sense that it has low saturation. The colors are dull and warm. This piece utilizes reds and oranges, in the serpent, that the first piece does not. • 4. The New Curriculum For The Foundation Stage In 2008 the new curriculum for the foundation stage in wales began its roll out. Its aim was to bring consistency and continuity to children s education, thus transforming early year s education in Wales. The principles on which the curriculum is based are that children should be provided with a good basis for future learningand the ability to apply their learning to everyday situations. Leighton Andrews, the former educationminister, said in an article on the Welsh Government website that the curriculum was designed to allow all children to flourish whatever their stage of development or learning ability (Andrews, 2010). The Framework for Children s Learning for 3 to 7 Year olds in Wales (here forth known as The Framework ) outlines 7 key areas of learning. These are Personal and social development, well being and cultural diversity , Language, literacy and communication skills , Mathematical development , Welsh language development , Knowledge and understanding of the world , Physical development and Creative development . The curriculum focuses on holistic learning, meaning that whilst there are 7 separate areas of learning, they are to be taught in a way which entwines them together allowing for children to develop skills such as everyday problem solving by understanding that mathematics is not merely a school subject but a skill which is used in everyday life. The movie illustrates the advantages and disadvantages of verdictmaking, group progressive phases, headship qualities and models, social influence strategies and endings, and the foundations of social supremacy. All through the production, we see two conflicting outlooks of fairness. From 8th Juror and others, as they link, we see an angle of justice that favors the defendant and that desires most for him to have a fair minded chance. • 21. Military Rules of Engagement and the Laws of War Military Rules of Engagement (ROE) and the Laws of War A civilized society cannot function without rules, laws, and codes of proper conduct. This statement may seem out of place in the context of warfighting; however, this is one place where it is most necessary. The fighters, who often act at the behest of their home nation, must have a code of conduct which allows them to make the correct decision in a given situation in a combat zone. Rules of Engagement fill this gap for the national militaries of the civilized world and serve as a soldier s code of conduct in the field. Similar to Rules of Engagement (ROE) are the Laws of War . The Laws of War were established as an international agreement. This agreement attempted to curtail the destruction caused by global conflicts such as the two world wars fought during the twentieth century. The laws of war fall under the Geneva conventions as well. Each of set of rules can be used as a foundation to create rules of engagement for a particular mission. It is also important to align rules of engagement with the uniform code of militaryjustice. This code, referred to as the UCMJ, is used as legal framework for the United States Military. This made ,most of the early stills very bare bones to the point. This maintained a grounded level for each portrait, keeping the message and character portrayed a little vague yet understandable with thought. The main common subject among all of these images, Sherman is dead center. Although Foucault believes that people are not the authors of society, discourses are governed independently of anyone s purpose (Learning Companion 2), the institutions he mentions help to keep order in society, although he is concerned about who can claim the authority of who has the power to rule how others should behave (Foucault cited by Silva, 2009, p319). When looking at Buchanans report I have found his findings to be similar to Foucaults in the way that they believe that rules have to be in place to have social order in society; Buchanan was commissioned to do his report by the UK government in 1961 which was Traffic in Towns aimed at finding solutions for urban space to accommodate pedestrians and cars. He found that social order was linked to the segregation of humans and motor vehicles and the need to create an array of measures in urban design for the regulation of the conduct of drivers and pedestrians, this vision is in contrast to Mondermans thesis of a shared approach. Buchanans model assumes individuals should conform to rules and a state that solves problems and looks after individual behaviour by having rules in place to help control situations (Buchanan cited by Silva, 2009, p341). A (10:00) Question #1 A principle is a fundamental source or basis of something. A principle cannot be proven, because to prove something we have to go back to the basics and principle is basis of everything. Although, what most philosophers seem to be doing to prove the validity of their theories is by showing that if we accept something else as a principle it would make no sense. The Pre Socratic philosophers were all searching for that one fundamental principle of reality that everything is based on. That factor was called arche, which literally means beginning, origin or a source of something. The Pre Socratic philosophers are called that because they all came before Socrates, and he is a major figure in ancient philosophy, because he was the first person to develop it as a distinct kind of knowledge. Most of the early philosophers were looking for a materialistic arche. Thales of Miletus (624 546 BC) is considered to be the first philosopher and he considered water to be the fundamental principle of everything. He thought that all things were composed of water, because it could take all three forms (liquid, solid and gas). He also observed that all living things needed water to stay alive and grow. The Victorians admired women that were sexually pure and capable of self sacrifice. To be pure was not easy in the Victorian era, especially not for the women that may have to prostitute themselves in order to survive. Dickens was well aware that these women were victims of society, poverty and men, and he criticized the cruelty of the Victorian society and peoples view of fallen women. Oliver Twist is an example of such criticism. Fallen women did not get a second chance in life. Women had a particularly hard time making a living. Oliver Twist spends his first ten years in a workhouse as an orphan, mistreated, abused and belonging to the lowest class in society. The significant changes in the amount of natural resources we have left have led to many issues, such as global public health and global development. Other areas affected include the loss of forest, water and air pollution, decrease in fresh water supply and degradation of soil. Today we are currently seeing dramatic increases in global population. As the world s population continues to rise, natural resources will continue to dwindle as long as we remain the same. The one thing that I would say is the most challenging for humans is being able to advance in life, but still not destroy the environment. If you look at most developed countries, it is evident that they consume resources way more rapidly than developing countries. The problem with this is that all of these countries are consuming faster than they can produce. Places like Africa and Asia are experiencing population momentum. These areas have a tendency for population growth that continues to grow because of the high concentration of people having kids. Better living conditions are definitely needed in these countries because of the limited amount of resources being consumed by these regions. • 41. The Garden By Andrew Corvel Poetry The poet who marvelled the readers and critics alike in the last decade of the nineteenth century through his exquisite handling of subject matter and stylistic devices is obviously Andrew Marvell(1621 1678).Originally associated with the school of Donne ,that is , the metaphysical school of poetry which focused on abstruse terminology, dramatic beginning, ratiocinative mode, colloquial language, wit, pun, paradox, ambiguity and above all, the use of metaphysical conceit; his is a veritable mosaic where he deals with varied and variegated themes. His poems like To His Coy Mistress, The Coronet, Mourning, Last Instructions to a Painter, The Fair Singer, The Picture of Little T.C, The Definition of Love, The Garden, The Mower s Song, An Horatian Ode Upon Cromwell s Return from Ireland, On a Drop of Dew, Upon Appleton House, to My Lord Fairfax are unique in matter as well as manner, theme as well as treatment, content as well as style. In his poems, Marvell treated political, carpe diem, personal, religious and pastoral themes. His The Garden is obviously the finest poem of the poems of rural solitude (Joseph H. • 42. Moral Hazard And The Banking System Moral Hazard and the Banking System ACCT 6377: Corporate Governance Zachary Seay The University of Texas at Dallas Introduction The moral hazard of bank bailouts is a very simple idea enveloped in a very complex issue. Back in late 2007 to mid 2009 the United States and the global economy faced one of the worst recessions the world has ever seen. In fact the time period has been dubbed the Great Recession. Now at a broad level this recession was caused essentially by our large banks buying and positively rating thousands upon thousands of mortgage backed securities and collateralized debt obligations. In addition, the banks started getting to a point where they were leveraged sometimes in excess of 30 to 1. The Federal Reserve initially recommended banks try to stay around 10 to 1.(d) When the mortgages started to foreclose the value of those securities plummeted and the banks started to lose solvency. With the issue of possible banks going into bankruptcy the government of course got involved. Instead of letting the banks fail, taxpayers instead bought up many of those toxic securities along with toxic bank stock and set the banks free without so much as a slap on the wrist. This is what many have come to consider a moral hazard. It is hard to tell if our actions really even helped as the economy didn t start getting to back to normal until around 2012. • 43. The Systems Development Life Cycle Essay The systems development life cycle (SDLC), also referred to as the application development life cycle, is a term used in systems engineering, information systems and software engineering to describe a process for planning, creating, testing, and deploying an information system. The systems development life cycle concept applies to a range of hardware and software configurations, as a system can be composed of hardware only, software only, or a combination of both. PHASES: o1 System investigation o 2 System analysis o 3 Design o 4 Environments o 5 Testing o 6 Training and transition o 7 Operations and maintenance o 8 Evaluation The system development life cycle framework provides a sequence of activities for system designers and developers to follow. It consists of a set of steps or phases in which each phase of the SDLC uses the results of the previous one. The SDLC adheres to important phases that are essential for developers, such as planning, analysis, design, and implementation, and are explained in the section below. It includes evaluation of present system, information gathering, feasibility and request approval. A number of SDLC models have been created: waterfall, fountain, spiral build and fix, rapid prototyping, incremental, and synchronize and stabilize. The oldest of these, and the best known, is the waterfall model: a sequence of stages in which the output of each stage becomes the input for the next. These stages can be characterized and divided up in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Stephen Kings Why We Crave Horror Films Essay As I was lying in bed recalling the event happened an hour before I was thinking to myself that I will never look at lightning the same way again. Thunder and lightning was still present in the night sky as I lay there in bed thanking God I was alive and well. Each flash of lightning lit the entire room and each clap of thunder rattled the windows of my hotel room. Lightning can seem much more terrifying when you re up 20,000 ft in the mountains, and the thunder sounds a lot louder too. The sound of nature s fury seemed to slowly descend as the night went on, but my nerves did not. I was still stunned and in shock of being stuck in a lightning storm high in the mountains. I never thought about the power and damage lightning can inflict... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Soon the moonlight illuminated the scenery. As I was standing on the balcony admiring the scenery something finally went wrong, a huge black cloud covered the moon. I soon heard the thunder. It seemed to be nothing to worry about, so I didn t acknowledge it. A few hours later the thunder grew louder and I could see the flashes of lightning headed our way. I went inside to inform my parents of the weather, but they didn t seem to worry about it much until the cloud was almost over the lodge. My family and I left the reception alone while everyone else stayed in cover; they were the smart ones I thought. We left quickly walking fast and practically running toward the gondolas so we wouldn t be stuck on the mountain all night long. By now the storm was close and so was the lightning. The people at the station loaded the four of us into a gondola and we slowly worked our way down the mountain. Hanging in this tiny box of metal by a hook on a wire cable was not the most reassuring thing. I looked out the window hoping to see the ground, but it was too dark. I could barely see the hand in front my own face. Lightning would flash, and all I could make out were the tops of trees. Paranoia overwhelmed me. My breaths seemed to become further and further apart as time slowed. As I was trying to relieve my mind of worst case scenario, a big flash and enormous rumble sounded. We stopped moving. Our gondola had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Using Mixed Methods For A Mixed Method Design Mixed methods are a combination of both qualitative and quantitative data. According to Sherperis, most researchers define themselves as either a qualitative or a quantitative researcher (Sherperis, C. J., Young, J. S., Daniels, M. H. (2010). Although it seems that combining the two would be a win win situation for the researcher as both sides are considered, it is important that there is trustworthiness and that coding is done appropriately. Having said this, it is important that whatever researchmethod is used, the method must be valid Laureate Education (Producer). (n.d.). Using a mixed methods design allows for research to be broader, vast, and have more depth (Sherperis et al., 2010). When conducting research, it has also been mentioned that Sherperis that although researches define themselves as one or the other (qualitative or quantitative) it is not necessary to do so. When performing a mixed methods design, one must think about how they wish to go about this research. It is imperative to be informed so that there are no issues with validity of the research. Cresswell (1999) has suggested the following prior to partaking in research using mixed methods 1) Determine the order in which you will implement the qualitative and quantitative data of your study, 2) Determine the weight that will be given to the quantitative and qualitative data, 3) determine how the two types of data will be mixed/combined, and 4) determine the theory that will guide your design ... • 46. Death In Trobriand Culture The Trobriand Islands of Papua New Guinea have been a landmark of anthropological study since the early twentieth century. Anthropologists such as Bronislaw Malinowski and Annette Weiner have written extensive ethnographies detailing the patriarchal ruling structure and matrilineal descent style of Trobriand society. Different functionalist approaches to anthropologyhave attempted to give meaning to the complex Trobriand culture. Perhaps one of the greatest performances of Trobriand culture is in the case of death, which sets into motion a number of exchanges with layers of individual, social, and cultural meanings. By examining Trobriand death rituals and analyzing structural functionalism versus pure functionalism, a comprehensive understanding... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In comparison to structural functionalism, this branch of functionalism focused on individuals and their specific human needs, and how institutions or customs could be shown as contributing to the culture as a whole. The tenets of pure functionalism can be best understood by analyzing the work of Bronislaw Malinowski. A pioneer for anthropological fieldwork, Malinowski lived in the Trobriand Islands for two years during WWI. Although he often struggled between being a person with the capacity for feeling and being someone who is rigorously objective and disciplined, Malinowski s fieldwork provided the first in depth analysis of Trobriand culture (Geertz, 1988, 79). During his study, Malinowski determined that there are seven basic human needs which include nutrition, reproduction, bodily comforts, safety, relaxation, movement, and growth (Langness, 1974, 98). He saw culture as the instrument through which these needs could be met. Like the historicalist Franz Boas, Malinowski placed an emphasis on the individual, yet always tried to correlate one set of activities with a cultural whole. It was with this mindset that Malinowski and other pure functionalists attempted to understand the culture of the Trobriand Islands. Although Malinowski went into depth on the Baloma spirit and its journey to the afterlife or Tuma, he did not explicitly cover death rituals in the Trobriand ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
