Operation Torch Analysis
Operation TORCH is valid, well conceived operational approach executing several decisive
tactical actions to achieve the desired strategic end state. North Africa and the Mediterranean Sea
are in firm control of the Axis. This prevents the British from using the shortest route through the
Mediterranean Sea in accessing raw materials and Persian Gulf oil. The British are heavily
dependent on imported oil. Therefore, the Allied want access to Persian Gulf oil and raw materials
via the Mediterranean Sea. Furthermore, the Allied strongly believe control of North Africafrom the
Atlantic Sea to the Red Sea best achieves free use of the sea lines of communication (SLOC) via
the Mediterranean Sea. Operation TORCH takes control of Mediterranean

Blood Clots
Blood clots are lifesaving when they stop a bleed. When they form abnormally they can cause
heart attacks, strokes, or other medical problems. Blood clots can form from many different
conditions. The first step to diagnosing a clot is an ultrasound. There are two types of treatment
plans to stop blood clots. Bloodclots affect many people each year and they can be very scary. I
will be covering the basics on blood clots to inform people of the dangers and how to avoid them.
DVT stands for deep vein thrombosis, which is a blood clot that forms in one or more deep
veins in the body. This becomes very dangerous when a part of the clot breaks of and travels
downstream through the heart into the pulmonary circulation system and becomes lodged in the
lung (www.medicinenet.com). The blood clots form in four different steps. First the platelet plug
forms. Then the chemical reactions grow the blood clot. Anti clotting processes halt the blood
clot s growth. The body then slowly breads down the blood clot (www.webmd.com). The types of
people who have a higher risk of blood clots ranges from cancer patients to people using certain
types of drugs. Most types of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Brightness modulation, also called B mode is used first. This is used with high energy sound
waves. The sonographer pushes down on the veins to try and collapse them. If they do not
collapse because of a clot this is when they diagnose the patient with a DVT. The second step is
to do a Doppler ultrasound to detect abnormalities of blood flow. This is how they determine if
the blood flow is normal and if there isn t a blood flow a DVT diagnosis is made. If both of these
tests are negative they move onto a Venogram or MRI. The reason they try to avoid these first is
because of the cost. After a clot is formed and treated they do a D dimer blood test to ensure that
the blood clot has disappeared

Minority Serving Institutions and the American Education...
Minority serving institutions have been an integral part of the education system in the United
States since before the Civil War (LeMelle, 2002). Historically black colleges and universities
(HBCUs) have, for much of their existence, been criticized for the level of academic rigor,
political context, and their social agenda have created controversy for generations. With that being
said, HBCUs hold a valuable place in the landscape of US higher educationinstitutions. The culture,
history, and perspective that is taught and shared are unparalleled and cannot be replicated at a
predominately white institution (PWI). The Higher EducationAct of 1965 gave opportunities for
educational advancement and financial aid programs to previously disadvantaged students
(Roebuck, 1993). This meant that underrepresented minorities were then granted access to colleges
and universities which they were previously not permitted. As PWIs were increasing
underrepresented minority enrollment in the 1960s, HBCUs were gaining strength. Financial aid
and accrediting bodies were paying closer attention to the needs of these institutions; more and
more students were enticed to enroll in higher education and seek otherwise impossible
opportunities. HBCUs face significant challenges. When compared to PWIs, HBCUs are more
likely to have students which are from low income environments, be the first in their families to
attend college, or need developmental courses (Rios, 2008). These challenges that

Critical Review On Mental Illness
A Critical Review of Young, T., Fuller, J., Riley B. (2008), One scene Mental Health Training
Provided through Police Departments, Journal of Mental Health Counseling Volume 30/Number 4
/Pages 345 361
Literature Review
As a significant increase in police contact with people with mental illness has a raised, proper
training and inpatient services have decreased in the growing needs of individuals suffering mental
health emergencies. Shown in the disproportionate arrest and incarceration of people with mental
illness, which is a huge concern for policymakers, communities and law enforcement agencies. With
police officers being among the first responders to these crises or often the only source of
immediate service for urgent mental health activities. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most importantly, a training model must provide a detailed program for officers to follow, which
the CIT model is one such strategy. One of the key aspects of the crisis intervention model is the
fostering a relationship between law enforcement and mental health professionals (Tucker, Van
Hasselt, Russell, 2008). Hinging on the fact that law enforcement administrators and officers must
be willing to perform the groundwork to meet the needs of the mental health community and vice
versa.
Jail diversion initiatives hinge on the availability of mental health services and practitioners. The
further away these services are geographically, the more logistical challenges exist to implement a
successful program. These issues are less common in metropolitan areas than in largely rural areas
(Sirotich, 2009).

Narrative Techniques In Ed Gonzalez s Film Close Up
As said by Ed Gonzalez in his article about Close up, the movie is still definitive film on film
commentary. This is proven throughout the movie with the use of shots and editing, and also with
how Bazin might react to Abbas Kiarostami s film. Throughout this course so far, shots and editing
have been an integral part of what has been covered. Close uphas a unique approach to how it is
directed. Considered a mockumentary, it has all the styles of a documentary with some twists. The
close up shot creates an intimate feeling for the viewer. With a close up shot the viewer connects
emotionally better with the person in the movie. Whether being interviewed, as seen in Close up,
or just a person talking in a movie the feeling is stronger about... Show more content on

The mummy complex is when cinema satisfies the desire to preserve. If he could give a reaction to
this Bazin would say that this whole film is real. Due to the fact that film is supposed to be trusted
in his mind and should show reality it means the film is all real. If this were the case though it
would make all movies look real. There is a knowledge that film is scripted for the most part and
what we see regularly is rarely real. This does preserve reality in Bazin s mind though. With the
kicking of the can, it shows that although it is scripted it is not a fake movie. There is still the
sense of reality in every scene. The can saves that, it preserves that sense. The mise en scene in
Kiarostami s Close up leans more towards the realistic side. The aspects of this movie
continually fall under the category of realistic. With the camera location for some of the shots it
makes it realistic. Seeing the scenes from behind car windows or other obstacles makes the
scenes real. They are real because it is like you are watching what is going on live right in front
of you. The lighting of the movie makes it realistic as well. There was never really any scenes
that were either too dark or too bright to make it seem fake. Even inside the courtroom it looked as
if the room was true and was not altered. The outdoor scenes were controlled lighting that would be

having pointed ear tips, this can be achieved as follows. With the dog facing you, comb the hair
above the eyes to form a fringe, using scissors cut straight across the fringe and comb it
backwards, now comb the hair at the side of the eyes and hold the hair outwards between two
fingers, cut the hair in a curved motion close to the fingers and towards the fringe, repeating the
same process on the other side. This should then give a small visor effect around the eyes. Repeat
this all over the head from front to back curving the scissors around the head creating the now

A Critical Analysis of The Rocking Horse Winner by D.H. Lawrence and The Destructors by
Graham Greene
In both stories, The Rocking Horse Winner by D.H. Lawrence and The Destructors by Graham
Greene we see the common theme of
wanting to be envied by others because of what we have or can do. The need to do better, have
prestige and more power than anyone else is a
very common human conflict that is dealt with on all levels of humanity. The emotional
environment that man grows and develops in plays
a factor in how he approaches everyday life.
Humanity is always trying to prove to others what they have is better than anyone elses. Paul s

destroyed it would send out a message to all the other gangs and gain the fame and respect that they
wanted. Blackie gave up his leadership
role easily because his earlier ideas of stealing had not really gained any recognition for his gang
like he wanted. He could see the possibility of
success and he overlooked his own pride and worth to go after it. Materialism can be seen in this
because they are using the destruction of a
house to gain respect, but on the other hand the modernist view can be seen because something has
to either build something up or destroy it.
All of these main characters shared a lot of common attributes. The first and most important
attribute was trying to overcome multiple
obstacles to get to their goal. In The Rocking Horse Winner , Paul found his rocking horse and the
ability to pick winning horses the way to

mentally and physically to get to his goal. He is

Hipaa Compliance And Technology Use Essay
HIPAA compliance and technology use: In 1996 when Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted HIPAA compliance and the use of technology was not
given that much importance as it is today. Only small percentage of people owned mobile phones
twenty years ago which didn t have a lot of capabilities of communicating except the basic text
messaging. Twenty years later the mobile device technology is much advanced and has much more
capabilities and much faster than imagined. Advanced capabilities include messaging, internet
access, e mails and ability to take pictures and be able to send using the mobile device.
The problems with medical organizations staying HIPAA compliant with modern technology: The
faster and more functional mobile devices with Multi capabilities raised concerns regarding the use
of the technology and HIPAA compliance. Concerns relating to patients privacy and
ePHI(electronically protected health information) security. Due to these concerns regulations within
HIPAA were enacted in 2013 to address these concerns.
Legislation related to use of technology to comply with HIPAA requires insurance companies,
health care providers, employers insurance, to implement administrative, physical and technical
safeguards for protecting the confidentiality of patients information which prevents a breach of
ePHI. If a breach of ePHI occurs, Healthcare providers, employers, third party service providers and
insurance companies are liable for

Troy vs. the Iliad Essay
Over the thousands of years that the epic story the Iliad has survived, there has no doubt been
some form of alteration to Homer s original. Last May, Wolfgang Petersen directed a movie
based on the Iliad. This movie, Troy, has proven to be a very loose adaptation of Homer s
original, as are almost all stories that are made into movies, unfortunately. With its timeless
storyline, amazing scenery, gorgeous actors/actresses and most of all, its reported two hundred
million dollar budget, it is easy to see why Troywas hyped up to be a box office hit. However, the
film critics were harsh on this movie, as they had every right to be, and it ended up being a total
flop. Compared to Homer s Iliad, Troy is rather disappointing. But, to be... Show more content on

We will never be here again (Troy 2004). The suspected start of the war over the abduction of Helen
, Queen of Sparta was caused entirely by a godly conflict over who was the most beautiful Hera,
Athena, and Aphrodite. Paris, son of King Priam of Troy, was selected to judge. He chose
Aphrodite, who in turn gave him Helen, who was her equivalent in beauty amongst humans. In
both versions, Paris is portrayed as a wife stealing, thief in the night. His brother Hector and he
were on a peace mission in Sparta on behalf of Troy visiting the king, Menelaus, when Paris ran
off with Menelaus wife, Helen. This action divides the Gods who constantly meddle with the
mortal s lives. Naturally, Aphrodite is on the Trojans side, as was her lover and God of War,
Ares, and Apollo. Although Zeus, King of Gods, tried to be neutral, he was pro Trojan. Hera,
Queen of Gods, and Athena help the Greeks because they were mad that Paris chose Aphrodite.
Poseidon, God of the Sea and Zeus brother, also sided with the Greeks whenever Zeus was not
looking. An example of this constant intrusiveness of the Gods in the Iliad was when King
Menelaus hurls his spear, lightly wounding Paris. Paris helmet strap becomes caught at his chin
and Menelaus has nearly dragged him away before Aphrodite intervenes, breaking the strap. She
then wraps Paris in a mist, sets him in his own perfumed bedchamber, and hurries to catch Helen

Child Poverty in the United States
In the United States, about 24 million children live in poverty (Ingraham). Poverty is a big issue
and has been for a while. It can affect children now and when they become adults. There are
children going to bed hungry, not knowing where their next meal is coming from, but Compassion
is a Christian organization working to stop child poverty around the world.
First, the United States is one of the wealthiest nations in the world, but also has one of the
highest poverty rates. The national median income is about $31,000 a year for a family of four
and 22 percent of children live in families whose income is below the national poverty level
(Ingraham). One in three children are living in poverty today (Ingraham). Next, poverty rates are
increasing rapidly. Since 2008, the United States poverty rate has increased, but during the same
time, 18 countries reduced their poverty rates (Ingraham). Between 2006 and 2011, the child
poverty rate increased in 34 states, mainly in Nevada, Idaho, Hawaii, and New Mexico (Ingraham).
Second, poverty also has an effect on students. There are more than half of public school students
living in poverty and most students who live in poverty drop out of school and do not graduate or
go to college (Kasperkevic). Some children actually think it is their fault that their families are
homeless (60 Minutes). Also, poverty can affect students

Should Witnesses Be Allowed To Testify For A Jury Essay
There have been more than 2,000 false convictions in the past twenty three years. Witnesses
should not be allowed to testify for a defendant that they know personally. The witness should not
be allowed to know the defendant personally because witnesses are a huge part in court cases and
memories can easily be changed, witnesses can lie, they can t always be credible, and it is hard to
testify against close friends.
Witnesses make a huge impression on a jury and the only way to have a truly honest witness is if the
are a neutral witness and have no stake in the result. One way witnesses are important in court cases
is, Witness testimony can make a deep impression on a jury, which is often exclusively assigned the

Such as, perjury is a crime, because lying under oath can subvert the integrity of a trial and the
legitimacy of the judicial system. However, perjury is defined as knowingly making a false

their testimony, or they would be guilty of perjury, but if someone the defendant knew was the

Credibility is believability or trustworthiness. If a witness s testimony and demeanor convinces

of the defendant do not have much credibility because they are not trustworthy due to the fact
that they would be bias towards their friend. A witness in a criminal case is someone who

George Orwell Politics And The English Language Analysis
In Politics and the English language, George Orwell portrays various tricks by which the work
of prose construction is habitually dodged. (Orwell 583). Orwell s argument is the English
language is being deformed by modern writers thus mocking the use of the language. Orwell
relates this topic to political and economic issues to show how the use of English is critical with
these aspects. He refers to this topic as a reversible process (Orwell 581) if writers follow his six
rules; without them the writing contains staleness of imagery and lack of precision. (Orwell 582).
Orwell names these tricks: dying metaphors, operators or verbal false limbs, pretentious diction,
and meaningless words. In Shooting an Elephant, Orwell uses these tricks to provide rhetorical
motives. Orwell mentions He wears a mask, and his face grows to fit it (Orwell 853) to refer to
himself when he was a police man in Moulmein, Burma.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Orwell states dying metaphors are in effect reverted to being an ordinary word and can generally
be used without loss of vividness. (Orwell 583). The comparison between a man wearing a mask
and the face of the man growing into the mask negate each other causing this metaphor to be
unclear. The negation kills the visual image for the reader by making it unclear if the mask
actually fits Orwell s face. If the reader cannot picture the comparison of a metaphor, it fails to
have meaning which is classifies it as a dead

Analysis of The Romantic Elements In Sleepy Hollow
In the novel Sleepy Hollow, by Peter Lerangis, several elements of the Romantic period of literature
are evident. Themes carry throughout the novel that suggest a strong Romantic influence upon the
text. The story is rich in colorful figurative language and contains a spell binding plot that leaves the
reader feeling very satisfied. In the midst of such an enchanting story are the Romantic themes, such
as a deep appreciation of nature in conjunction with the condemnation of city life, exaltation of
emotion over reason along with the defiance of conventional rules and traditions, and interest in
local folk/ethnic culture, while providing the reader with plenty of attention to the supernatural.
Each of these elements combines to create a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is ironic that for the duration of the beginning of the novel, Crane refuses to allow anyone to
speak of such theoretically impossible tales as the tale of the Headless Horseman. However, after
seeing the beast for himself, he is pleading with the people of the town that they must believe
[him], and that he can assure all of them of the visual contact he made with a horseman. A dead
one. Headless! (Lerangis 66). With his newfound faith in the credibility of the legends around
the hollow, Ichabod decides that all of the logic and reason he had previously relied on are of no
use to him. It is ironic that one night s events have changed his views on reasoning so quickly.
Nearing the novel s end, Ichabod burns all of his ledgers and papers that had held his knowledge
over the past several years. In doing so, it is apparent that he has accepted the fact that sense and
knowledge had betrayed him in Sleepy Hollow (Lerangis 125). Ichabod s sense and knowledge
are personified in this passage to show the reader that two ideals which he had held so close to
heart and high in regard had proved to be inadequate. This further exaggerates the Romantic ideals
of the power of emotion over all reason and logic. Along with this newfound reliance on emotion
rather than reason is a defiant quality of all formal rules and traditions. All of the other authoritative
figures in New York shun

Barn Burning Foreshadowing
In the short story Barn Burning, the narrator, William Faulkner, uses many different types of
descriptions and ways to make the reader think about the whole story. He puts so many conflicts
in the story that all comes back to one huge problem. The theme of this story is to show the way
men put their own pride before the law. The way Faulkner shows this theme is by using symbols,
conflict, and motifs. This first example of Faulkner using symbolism is by him using the
expensive rug he soils. Snopes soils the rug by stepping on it with manure on his shoes; this
eventually leads to the destruction of the rug. Snopes intentionally messes up this rug that is very
expensive, just to make a point. The rug is a symbol of everything Snopes had pride for and his
occasional opportunities. By him messing it up he shows that anything can be taken away from
you; thus, meaning all his opportunities and pride... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is a lot of conflict in this story with fire. Fire is mentioned many times in this short story,
from the burning barn or the roadside fires. Fire is used to represent the honor and the way that
Snopes believes. He uses the fire to burn a barn, which sends Confederate troops go searching for
the Horse thief. He tries to use this fire to give him just one second of fame. All he wants is to be
in the spotlights for one second and he uses fire to do that. The last example is by using motif.
Faulkner uses the motif to show how darkness can take over one person s life. For example,
Snopes beats Sartoris at the roadside camp because he was mad Sartoris was planning to reveal his
guilt at the courthouse. This shows that Snopes doesn t care about the truth, all he cares about is
how his situation is. Snopes plans on burning another barn; however, Sartoris stands up for his own
morality during this whole episode. Snopes significantly cares about the way that he looks in
everyone else s eyes instead of the truth and the

in Spain it is used to say that it will be very easy to obtain something. In Chile, Colombia and

Adrenal Glands
Adrenaline is a hormone that the adrenal glands produce. They are produced during times of
stress or excitement. This is a powerful hormone that is a part of the body s flight or fight
response. It works by diluting air passages, contracting blood vessels and stimulating the heart. This
helps supply the lungs with more oxygen and increase blood flow to the muscles. What Are The
Adrenal Glands? The adrenal glands can be found above the kidneys. They are about three inches
long. Adrenaline is one of the hormones that these glands release. Dopamine, adrenaline and
norepinephrine are catacholomines which are hormones that the body releases during times of

Effects Not only does a person notice an increase in performance and strength, but he or she will
also experience increased respiration and heightened awareness. The person may also feel
dizzy, lightheaded and experience vision changes. The effects may last up to one hour. If a
person is stressed but not actually in danger, then he or she may feel irritable and tired. This is
because adrenaline stimulates the release of glucose and raises blood sugar. Many people find
that working off this adrenaline rush is beneficial after a stressful situation. In the past, people
would handle stressful situations by fighting. However, stressful situations in the modern world
may not involve physical activity. Extra energy can be used up through exercise. Even though
adrenaline can be useful for helping a person survive, it can be harmful over time. This hormone

Loss of Innocence in Mamas Don t Let Your Babies Grow Up...
One of my daddy s favorite songs is Mamas Don t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys by
Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. The song is an old southern anthem of the basic tale and
fate of growing up. The song goes on to warn mothers to keep their children safe from the harsh
world that awaits them, in this case it s the world of the west, and it couldn t be more true.
Growing up is inevitable and is a epidemic people have been trying to battle for years, the same
way Peter Pan could not stand to age even a year. With growing up and older, the world around
you seems to change within itself but all that is really changing is you. Your values and morals
change along with your opinions. You begin to see things in a different light and it s as if when
you were born, you were born into complete darkness and as time goes on the light slowly starts to
burn from dim to blindingly bright. Everyone has been growing up for years, even
Scout Finch from fictional Maycomb, Alabama in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird

from innocence to understanding is one everyone must endure and take on with all the trials and
tribulations that come with life. Most children grow up hearing old stories from their families and

that inside the house lived a malevolent phantom

Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden Essay
Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden tells about a child s indifferent relationship with his
father. The poem explains all of the things the father did for his child without being asked or
thanked. It then jumps to the child s point of view and tells what they say as a child as to what
they see now as an adult looking back. The child, who is now grown, shows signs of regret as he
looks back at how he treated his father, who sounds to have passed away. Finally, in the final lines
the speakerrealizes that the father s relationship was filled with love.
In the beginning two sentences of the poem, the speaker talks about his father getting up early on

The speaker talks of waking as the blueblack cold is subsiding and beginning to splinter and
break as the fire his father lit melts it. However, even once the house is warm the father merely
calls to the child to wake. He does not rush the child, this known when the speaker talks of how
slowly he would get up and get dressed. This shows the tender side of the father, who wakes up
early every day of the week in the cold in order to support his family and to keep them warm.
In contrast, in line nine, the speaker talks of chronic angers in the house. This could refer to the
father or the family being unhappy or angry. However, it could also be that the speaker is using
personification and referring to the house as being angry. Perhaps there have been bad events such
as hardships that have occurred in the house that have left behind an angry vibe. Whatever the case
may be, the anger is defined as chronic, meaning that is serious enough to strike fear into the
speaker and persists for long time.
In line ten the speaker talks of how ungrateful and unfazed or unconcerned the speaker is with
his father. This part may refer back to line five where the speaker said the father was never once
thanked for going out of his way or anything he did. The speaker may have been so indifferent
that he was just blind as a child when it came to everything his father did. However, the
indifference could also be

My Aunt Julie Is One Of The Most Amazing, Sweet, And...
My aunt Julie is one of the most amazing, sweet, and hilarious people I have ever met.
She has the most beautiful and kind soul. She was also born with a severe mental and physical
handicap called Cerebral Palsy. It is a condition that occurs when the brain hasn t completely
developed at birth, in Julie s case she was born prematurely and was also a twin, making her
even smaller and more frail at birth. Julie was born not breathing and the doctors couldn t get her
to start breathing for 5 minutes after she was born. She is now in her early fifties, but only has
the mental capability of a 78 year old child. She has been in a wheelchair for her whole life and
never even taken one step, she also has very minimal control of her arms and hands. Julie also
has a very hard time controlling her temper and her emotions, I can only assume that it is because
she feels as though she is trapped in her own body and will never be able to get out of it and feel
free.
Julie has this crazy love for Nascar and has never missed watching a race. Everyone has their little
obsessions, for my six year old nephew it is toy cars, my older brother it is playing the guitar, for
me it is Cadbury Eggs, but for Julie it is Nascar races and the Nascar driver Dale

The Era Of The 1920s
The 1920s was a pivotal era in women s fashion an era that saw Prohibition, Jazz and celebration
of war s end. Gone was the hourglass figure of the 19th Century, swept away by the World War I,
and replaced by the figure of a modern, independent woman. This book covers fashions from 1920
to 1924, an often overlooked period of fashion which was a time of transition between the draped
and layered fashions of the post World War I era and the free and easy gowns of the jazz age flapper
.
Before the Roaring Twenties, women were still wearing floor length dresses with corsets, and
crinolines, arms and legs were covered, hair was long. This Gibson girl look was set the standard
for beauty, fashion and manner. And the Victorian attitudes toward dress and etiquette created a
strict moral climate.
Until 1920s things changed quickly, the women was given the right to vote, they began to attend
college. The Equal Rights Amendment was proposed in 1923. The World War I was over and men
wanted their jobs back. Women, though, who had taken up men s jobs while they were at war, had
proved themselves worthy of men s jobs, so many organizations and feminist reformers took up the
task to encourage gender equality.
Many important things happened in the 1920 s like prohibition and jazz music. Something that is
also very significant is that this was the decade where fashion began entering a modern era. After
decades of Victorian style, clothing such as corsets and petticoat, fashion was finally

The Novel The Scarlet Letter
The Weight of a Name The Scarlet Letter is a timeless novel because of the timeless characters
depicted in the piece. Each character was carefully constructed by Nathanial Hawthorne to
represent a specific aspect of sin. He used these characters to tell a story that would translate how
distorted the Puritans view of sin was. Not only did he thoughtfully plan the characters
personalities, backgrounds, and beliefs out in order to convey this distortion of sin, but their names
were carefully considered as well. Nathanial Hawthorne purposefully chose the names of the major
supporting characters in The Scarlet LetterPearl, Roger Chillingworth, and Arthur Dimmesdale, in
order to symbolically hint at the significance of each of these characters in the novel. Hawthorne
viewed the greatest sin of all to be hypocrisy, not the sin of adultery that Hester Prynne, the main
character in the novel, was found guilty of. Hester had a child born from her adulterous act. This
child became the literal embodiment of the sin committed, yet was strategically named Pearl,
something pure. Melissa Pennell, a literary analyzer of The Scarlet Letter wrote, Hester
consciously gives Pearl a name that has symbolic value (Pennell 83). The name Pearl was chosen
because she knew her daughter had come at great price (Johnson 77). Pearls are cultivated from
dust into something of great value, just as Pearl was born from a sinful act and considered by a

The Anti Sikh riots in the 1984 year of riots had been anything in particular. People are aggrieved

The Short Story The Interlopers

consider each other their enemies and do whatever it takes to be better than one another. When

middle of the forest and tried to kill each other. However, they were trapped by the huge tree that

von Gradwitz told Georg Znaeym that if Ulrich s men come faster than Georg s men then Ulrich
will tell the men to rescue Georgefirst, and that they have better things to do than getting the

Georg rather than fighting over who gets the forest land. Ulrich asked George to be his friend, and
George accepted his request. Waiting for their men to come and help them, both wished that their
private men would come first so they can be the first to show honorable attention to the other (Saki

How Does Divorce Create Long Term Negative Effects For...
Divorce is one of many controversial subjects in family and human development research. What
inspired me to critically analyze the article Does Divorce Create Long Term Negative Effects for
Children? is the challenge it would be for me to put my bias aside considering I am from a
divorced home. After reading the article and analyzing it over and over, I can t help but think that
the writer answering YES to this controversial question overlooked many variables and over
generalized his findings and research. With Zinsmeister overgeneralizing his research, not
considering enough alternate explanations for long term negative effects divorce, and his lack of
relevant information needed to assess reliability and validity are why I find this article to be
insightful but not accurate and hope to show why.
In the introduction to the article, the authors David Gately and Andrew Schwebel best wrote Karl
Zinsmeister uses studies of children and divorce to argue against the contention made by many

prove/explain his opinions and back them by research.

of the bunch is Wicca. Since the beginning of it s formation, it has received more than its fair
share of assessment, demolition, and genocide. The problem with opinions on such a heavy topic,
is that people don t usually take into account all of the facts and different aspects before being
quick to judge. Hopefully this essay will clear up some of the fog in... Show more content on

According to Wiseman, Wicca is a way of life to it s many followers, it s a philosophy. It is a
unique religion, in that the hierarchy found in most practiced religions today is not present. It
lacks the tiered code, and allows both male and female to be equal in all aspects. Both sexes have
an opportunity to be initiated into priesthood, much to the contrasting variation found in
Catholicism. Once someone is introduced to a circle or coven, people are encouraged to develop
their own individualistic ideals and style of worship. In fact, it is found to be immoral to impose
beliefs upon one another, but rather everyone should create their own and embrace them. This is
based on the Wiccan Golden Rule, found in the Wiccan Reed, which states, An Ye Harm None, Do
As Ye Will (Wiseman, 2015). This essentially translates to you must tolerate and respect one
another, and is held as one of the highest values found within Wiccan

White Privilege In Education
White privilege is a predominant issue in America today as it is embedded into the education
systems. In an article written by Peggy McIntosh titled, White privilege: Unpacking the Invisible
Knapsack, McIntosh writes about white privilege not being necessarily overt, but embedded and
so naturally it is hard to see especially for white people, as it is simply the norm most of them have
been born into. White privilege ultimately gives white people an easier life, as they are awarded
unearned advantages over people of colour. White privilege affects the chances to obtain a job in
academia, the curriculum being taught, and student success in the world of education.

This is due to the lack of diversity within university, it is inevitable for non white students to feel
othered and ostracized. White people tend to feel more comfortable in lecture and tutorial, as
well as with speaking to instructors individually. This leads to a lower student success rate
among students who are not white. (Lund 2010, 23) An example of how non white students are
made to feel othered is in the book, Racism in the Canadian University: Demanding Social
Justice, Inclusion, and Equity. The book interviewed undergraduate and graduate Caribbean
students they asked about the university and their experiences with racism, if it was inclusive, as
well as welcoming for minorities. Most students said there was a lack of diversity within the
curriculum, faculty, and peers. Many students also felt racialized, and uncomfortable attending
the university. As they said they were made to feel inferior to the other students. One example
was an African American female graduate student who attended a conference where she was the
only person of colour. At the conference she presented a paper, and afterwards was
complimented by a man who said she was very articulate. The student took offence to this as she
felt it was a backhanded compliment. It is expected for anyone to be presenting a paper at an
acaemic conference to be articulate. (Frances 2010, 106 127) It is normal for white people in

The Between Groups Design And The Cross Sectional Design...
Summary Hypothesis If a person participates in many daily activities, exercises early daily
scheduling, has consistently scheduled social rhythms, and partakes in activities with active
social engagement, then the person will self report that he or she is a good sleeper. Methods In
the study, the between groups design and the cross sectional design were used for research.
There were 243 participants between the ages of 18 and 39, and the majority were females and
Caucasians. The average age was about 21 years old. The measurements used were the Social
Rhythm Metric, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Beck Depression Inventory, Second
Edition. The PSQI was used to measure perceived sleep quality within the past month. Once the
Sleep Quality Index was obtained, the participants were categorized as good sleepers (5) based
on scale ranging from 0 to 19. The SRM was used to assess social rhythms. The overall activities
performed by a test subject, the number of activities performed involving social interaction, and
the number of activities involving minimum to no social interaction were analyzed. The SRM
also tracked the regularity of activities, so a hit meant an activity was performed within 45
minutes of the habitual time. The BDI II was used to calculate participants levels of depression.
Participants would be trained to use the SRM, then they would be given 14 days of SRMs. The
diary was to be returned after the 15th day. Thus, 2 weeks of monitoring would

Gideon V. Wainwright Case Study
In the 1963 decision of Gideon v. Wainwright, the court sought to establish the guarantee of a fair
trial before impartial tribunals in which every defendant stands equal before the law. Gideon v.
Wainwright, 372 U.S. 335, 344 (1963). In Gideon, the court announced a right to counsel in
criminal cases. Id. However, this decision only extended to criminal cases and left civil litigants
waiting for their own Gideon decision. Fifty five years later, and there is still no universal right
to counsel in civil cases. The Supreme Court has failed to utilize opportunities to make a ruling
similar to Gideon in civil cases, despite the presence of similar issues. In Lassiter v. Dept. of Soc.
Services, the court held that indigent litigants only had a right to appointed counsel when they
risk losing their physical liberty . Lassiter v. Dept. of Soc. Services, 452 U.S. 18, 23 (1981). In
other words, absent a threat of incarceration or extreme circumstances, there is not right to
counsel. Lee Shevell, Civil Gideon: The Poor Man s Fight, 16 Public Interest Law Reporter 32
37 (2010). The injustice of incarcerating a defendant that was tried and convicted without the
representation of an attorney is an obvious truth. Gideon, 372 U.S. 344. Yet, isn t there truth to
the shocking injustice of leaving the poor and most vulnerable without representation for legal
issues regarding basic needs such as shelter, food, safety, family and health? The decision in
Gideon stressed that a criminal conviction, stripping an individual of their liberty, without the
representation of counsel was a grave injustice that violated the dues process clause. The poor
are denied due process, suffering a loss liberty and justice because they cannot afford legal
representation. In some cases, the loss is just as great if not greater than being convicted of a
crime or imprisoned. Kathryn Grant Madigan, Advocating for a Civil Right to Counsel in New
York State Note, 25 Touro Law Review 9 22 (2009). Without a civil Gideon or federal action
establishing a right to civil counsel, it has been left to individual state governments to close the
justice gap for their impoverished communities. In New York, the state senate introduced a bill that

Summary Of Zoot Suit By Luis Valdez
In the play Zoot Suit, the author Luis Valdez deals with the central theme of injustice and
uncanny law enforcement through the life of Mexican American gangster Henry Renya.
Essentially, the Hispanic 38th street men, which is led by Henry, are accused of a crime they did
not commit. One can determine that they were wrongfully sentenced because of their race and
their choice of clothing. Throughout the play, Luis Valdez depicts how injustice has become a
part of the life for Mexican Americans through the portrayals of the Sleepy Lagoon Murder, their
attire, misconduct during the trial, and racism. The murder of Jose Williams to place at Sleep
Lagoon in the year of 1942. When the victim was discovered, it was as if the cops already knew who

The pachucos suffered from obvious racism during the trial and it can be detected many times. A
number of times throughout the trial, the prosecution pointed to the clothing and hairstyles of the
men in order to argue his reasoning behind them being guilty. The trial was biased and was unfair
to the pachucos because of the prejudice and discrimination they faced. This case was a prime
example of a group of people being racially profiled because they were considered different from
the norm . While racism was a prominent theme throughout the play, both George and Alice were
two white characters who fought tirelessly to defend the Mexican Americans of their wrongful
conviction. Therefore, the lesson that Luis was trying to teach his audience is that sometimes
people do not have the ability to fight for themselves, which caused them to depend on others who

Theme Of Escapism In The Boat
Wallpaper, and in Alistair MacLeod s The Boat Oftentimes, when burdening or stressful
circumstances begin to generate strain on an individual, they find themselves turning to literary
art as a form of mental relief. This deliverance applies, in particular, to the narrator in Charlotte
Perkins Gilman s The Yellow Wallpaper, and the father in The Boat, by Alistair MacLeod. In both
short stories, readers can pinpoint several instances in which these specific characters seek solace
through differing formats of written language. The function of the father s books in The Boat, and
the narrator s diary in The Yellow Wallpaper, is to serve as an instrument of escapism, rebellion,
and self expression, within the controlled existence of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His usual reaction was to turn up the radio, [...] (MacLeod 228). Notwithstanding their partner s
contempt of reading and writing, both the father in The Boat, and the narrator in The Yellow
Wallpaper, continue to search for reprieve through their respective books and diary. In addition
to the extreme limitations of their daily routine, both characters in MacLeod s and Gilman s
short stories are subject to their significantly overbearing and oppressive spouses. The
domineering management of their lives compels these characters to engage in either reading or
writing, as an act of defiance towards their authority wielding partners. This minor form of
rebellion allows the characters to feel as though they have at least some aspect of control over
their lives. The father in MacLeod s story is aware of his wife s aversion to and disapproval of
reading; however, this antagonism does not deter him from spending all his minimally free time
devouring books in his room. The narrator notes that his mother despised the room and all it stood
for, yet his father remained inside it every night while the goose necked lamp illuminated the

Jerome Idaho Business Analysis
The City of Jerome Idaho was known as the forty third County in the forty third State of the
United States of American. It was created in 1919 from what they call the parent counties of
Gooding, Minidoka and Lincoln counties. In the 1880 s Jerome county was actually known as
Alturas County, one which no longer exists. As for the name of Jerome, there is a difference of
option as to where that came from. Some believe Jerome was named after the son of W. S. Kuhn
whose name was Jerome Kuhn. He had purchased some property known as North Side, from a
Frank Buhl. Jerome had planned on building a town site there on North Side. But then again on the
other side are those who believe that Jerome was named after Jerome Hill, a man who was

While working in the different schools as a substitute teacher, I learned what schools had the
highest level of students with special needs in spelling, and math. These kids were taken out of
class to work with me on a one on one level helping to try and get them caught up in spelling,
sounds and how to read, as well as math. It was amazing to see kids that were in the second
grade not knowing there sounds or being able to add and subtract math correctly. They were in
second grade on a first grade reading/math levels. I also worked in schools that had the highest
level of kids in reading and math. Why such a split? The way the school are set up, you would
actually think that the location of the schools verses the issues within the school would be flipped.
When substituting at the charter school I found out that they have a higher than average poverty
level at their school, where 73% of the children in the school receive free lunches, which is up
from 2013 at 65%. Our neighboring Twin Fallscounty school district runs at a 55% with their
charter school runs as low as 28% for free lunches. It is hard to figure out the reasons behind why
the poverty levels are so high. This is a farming community and we have a lot of migrants that come
in and work. This is an understandable issue with the kids needing to learn English, but not for the
kids that are non immigrants, but then again it

The Speaker s Role in Three Poems by Howard, Wyatt, and Raleigh
The speakers in Farewell, False Love, by Sir Walter Raleigh and My Lute, Awake! by Sir Thomas
Wyatt the Elder have similar motivations, although the poems have differing constructs. Each
speaker seeks to unleash his venomous emotions at a woman who has scorned him, by humiliating
her through complicated revenge fantasies and savage metaphors. Through this invective, he hopes
to convince us of this woman s inward ugliness. Raleigh catalogues a long list of conceits for his
false love: she is every horrid thing from a siren song to an idle boy that sleeps in pleasure s lap .

The eloquent My Lute, Awake! is ostensibly addressed to the speakers lute and to his lover, but the
story that he tells of her cruel rejection, and his predictions of her eventual lonely decrepitude,
are clearly meant for our ears, and he is notably aware that we are listening. Although he refers to
his lover as thee, he acknowledges early on that she cannot or will not hear him: As to be heard
where ear is none, / As lead to grave in marble stone / My song may pierce her heart as soon. In
Farewell, False Love, Raleigh does not use the second person, and his motive is obviously to
characterize his faithless love before his public. His metaphors are as creative as they are
damning, and the verse itself is highly structured: the first stanza deals with his lover s dishonesty,
the second with her appearance of sweetness which masks sin ( A poisoned serpent covered all
with flowers. . . A gilded hook that holds a poisoned bait ), and so forth. This is no spontaneous
outpouring of emotion: it s more like a finely tuned, premeditated character assassination.
Raleigh and Wyatt both proclaim stoicism in the face of rejection, contending that they no longer
care for their lovers after having been betrayed and rebuffed. Raleigh concludes his poem with
Dead is the root whence all these fancies grew. Wyatt asks his lute, Should we then sing or sigh or
moan? No, no, my lute for I have done. Care then

Incubation Paper
Problem solving can be facilitated by an incubation effect, which is a sudden realisation of an
appropriate answer or insight (Smith Blankenship, 1991). Incubation has been widely studied to
understand performance, such as in problem solving, enhancing creativity, or its association with
unconscious processing.
Many studies have found supporting evidence for incubation as a facilitating mechanism for
problem solving. Smith and Blankenship (1991) found reliable results and good internal validity
when they found improved performance on the Remote Associates Tasks (RAT) due to incubation
effects. Their five experiments on the RAT showed that incubation effects were only effective after
fixation, which was a mechanism that prevented the subject ... Show more content on

Ritter and Dijksterhuis (2014) found that unconscious processing during a period of incubation can
positively influence creativity. They argued that it is not only the lack of conscious processing
during an incubation period, but rather the presence of unconscious thoughts that heavily influence
an individual s level of creativity (Ritter Dijksterhuis, 2014). Gilhooly, Georgiou, Garrison, Reston,
and Sirota (2012) found that immediate incubation periods facilitated in creative tasks, such as the
Alternative Uses Task (AUT), through unconscious processes. They suggested that delayed
incubation periods can be interfered by conscious processing before the incubation period had
initiated, where forgetfulness and unconscious processing are both occurring (Gilhooly et al.,
2012). In contrast, an immediate incubation period where only unconscious processing takes place
and subsequently followed by conscious problem solving post incubation, is more effective for
creativity (Gilhooly et al., 2012). Despite the supporting evidence, studies, such as Segal (2004),
concluded that his findings did not support the evidence of unconscious processing reported in the
current literature. Rather, his results supported his returning act hypothesis that incubation served
as a diversion to rearrange possible accurate assumptions when the participants returned to the target
task (Segal, 2004). Hence, this notion of mental rearranging involves conscious processing rather
than unconscious

My Career Path For My Life
I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis when I was eight years old. I noticed that the first
three letters of Arthritis spell art . To me, art is the creative outlet that has made me the person I
am today. My artistic abilities have helped me choose my career path in film that I want to
peruse for the rest of my life. I have used my real life obstacles, career goals, accomplishments
and personal background to write lyrics, scripts and create art. I am an artist and I know that
with the talents I have, will help me accomplish anything I set my mind to. I am the second
oldest of four children and the second person in my family to go to college. Neither of my
parents had the opportunity to college, so I had to work hard in school to get into a four year
university. There is a lot of pressure on me to be a good role model and set a good example for
my younger siblings. I treasure my education due to the fact my parents were not able to have
one. Due to my parent s education level, my dad is the only one who was able to find a job to
provide for a family of six. He barely makes enough to maintain my family with the daily
necessities. My family also has to put my medical expenses first over my education expenses.
My parents do not have any left over money to help me pay my cell phone, school supplies,
textbooks, or housing. Since, I am the second person going to college from my family and I will
have to fund my education on my own just as my older brother did. My financial

North Africa and the Mediterranean Sea are in firm control of the Axis. This prevents the British from using the shortest route through the Mediterranean Sea in accessing raw materials and Persian Gulf oil. The British are heavily dependent on imported oil. Therefore, the Allied want access to Persian Gulf oil and raw materials via the Mediterranean Sea. • 3. Blood Clots Blood clots are lifesaving when they stop a bleed. When they form abnormally they can cause heart attacks, strokes, or other medical problems. Blood clots can form from many different conditions. The first step to diagnosing a clot is an ultrasound. There are two types of treatment plans to stop blood clots. Bloodclots affect many people each year and they can be very scary. I will be covering the basics on blood clots to inform people of the dangers and how to avoid them. DVT stands for deep vein thrombosis, which is a blood clot that forms in one or more deep veins in the body. This becomes very dangerous when a part of the clot breaks of and travels downstream through the heart into the pulmonary circulation system and becomes lodged in the lung (www.medicinenet.com). The blood clots form in four different steps. First the platelet plug forms. Then the chemical reactions grow the blood clot. Anti clotting processes halt the blood clot s growth. The body then slowly breads down the blood clot (www.webmd.com). The types of people who have a higher risk of blood clots ranges from cancer patients to people using certain types of drugs. Most types of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Brightness modulation, also called B mode is used first. This is used with high energy sound waves. The sonographer pushes down on the veins to try and collapse them. If they do not collapse because of a clot this is when they diagnose the patient with a DVT. The second step is to do a Doppler ultrasound to detect abnormalities of blood flow. This is how they determine if the blood flow is normal and if there isn t a blood flow a DVT diagnosis is made. If both of these tests are negative they move onto a Venogram or MRI. The reason they try to avoid these first is because of the cost. After a clot is formed and treated they do a D dimer blood test to ensure that the blood clot has disappeared ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Minority Serving Institutions and the American Education... Minority serving institutions have been an integral part of the education system in the United States since before the Civil War (LeMelle, 2002). Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have, for much of their existence, been criticized for the level of academic rigor, political context, and their social agenda have created controversy for generations. With that being said, HBCUs hold a valuable place in the landscape of US higher educationinstitutions. The culture, history, and perspective that is taught and shared are unparalleled and cannot be replicated at a predominately white institution (PWI). The Higher EducationAct of 1965 gave opportunities for educational advancement and financial aid programs to previously disadvantaged students (Roebuck, 1993). This meant that underrepresented minorities were then granted access to colleges and universities which they were previously not permitted. As PWIs were increasing underrepresented minority enrollment in the 1960s, HBCUs were gaining strength. Financial aid and accrediting bodies were paying closer attention to the needs of these institutions; more and more students were enticed to enroll in higher education and seek otherwise impossible opportunities. HBCUs face significant challenges. When compared to PWIs, HBCUs are more likely to have students which are from low income environments, be the first in their families to attend college, or need developmental courses (Rios, 2008). These challenges that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is proven throughout the movie with the use of shots and editing, and also with how Bazin might react to Abbas Kiarostami s film. Throughout this course so far, shots and editing have been an integral part of what has been covered. Close uphas a unique approach to how it is directed. Considered a mockumentary, it has all the styles of a documentary with some twists. The close up shot creates an intimate feeling for the viewer. The mummy complex is when cinema satisfies the desire to preserve. If he could give a reaction to this Bazin would say that this whole film is real. Due to the fact that film is supposed to be trusted in his mind and should show reality it means the film is all real. If this were the case though it would make all movies look real. There is a knowledge that film is scripted for the most part and what we see regularly is rarely real. This does preserve reality in Bazin s mind though. With the kicking of the can, it shows that although it is scripted it is not a fake movie. There is still the sense of reality in every scene. The can saves that, it preserves that sense. The mise en scene in Kiarostami s Close up leans more towards the realistic side. The aspects of this movie continually fall under the category of realistic. With the camera location for some of the shots it makes it realistic. Seeing the scenes from behind car windows or other obstacles makes the scenes real. They are real because it is like you are watching what is going on live right in front of you. The lighting of the movie makes it realistic as well. Once the house was destroyed it would send out a message to all the other gangs and gain the fame and respect that they wanted. Blackie gave up his leadership role easily because his earlier ideas of stealing had not really gained any recognition for his gang like he wanted. He could see the possibility of success and he overlooked his own pride and worth to go after it. Materialism can be seen in this because they are using the destruction of a house to gain respect, but on the other hand the modernist view can be seen because something has to either build something up or destroy it. Hipaa Compliance And Technology Use Essay HIPAA compliance and technology use: In 1996 when Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted HIPAA compliance and the use of technology was not given that much importance as it is today. Only small percentage of people owned mobile phones twenty years ago which didn t have a lot of capabilities of communicating except the basic text messaging. Twenty years later the mobile device technology is much advanced and has much more capabilities and much faster than imagined. Advanced capabilities include messaging, internet access, e mails and ability to take pictures and be able to send using the mobile device. The problems with medical organizations staying HIPAA compliant with modern technology: The faster and more functional mobile devices with Multi capabilities raised concerns regarding the use of the technology and HIPAA compliance. Last May, Wolfgang Petersen directed a movie based on the Iliad. This movie, Troy, has proven to be a very loose adaptation of Homer s original, as are almost all stories that are made into movies, unfortunately. With its timeless storyline, amazing scenery, gorgeous actors/actresses and most of all, its reported two hundred million dollar budget, it is easy to see why Troywas hyped up to be a box office hit. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We will never be here again (Troy 2004). The suspected start of the war over the abduction of Helen , Queen of Sparta was caused entirely by a godly conflict over who was the most beautiful Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Paris, son of King Priam of Troy, was selected to judge. He chose Aphrodite, who in turn gave him Helen, who was her equivalent in beauty amongst humans. In both versions, Paris is portrayed as a wife stealing, thief in the night. His brother Hector and he were on a peace mission in Sparta on behalf of Troy visiting the king, Menelaus, when Paris ran off with Menelaus wife, Helen. This action divides the Gods who constantly meddle with the mortal s lives. Naturally, Aphrodite is on the Trojans side, as was her lover and God of War, Ares, and Apollo. Although Zeus, King of Gods, tried to be neutral, he was pro Trojan. Hera, Queen of Gods, and Athena help the Greeks because they were mad that Paris chose Aphrodite. Poseidon, God of the Sea and Zeus brother, also sided with the Greeks whenever Zeus was not looking. An example of this constant intrusiveness of the Gods in the Iliad was when King Menelaus hurls his spear, lightly wounding Paris. Paris helmet strap becomes caught at his chin and Menelaus has nearly dragged him away before Aphrodite intervenes, breaking the strap. She then wraps Paris in a mist, sets him in his own perfumed bedchamber, and hurries to catch Helen (Bloom 13). Of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Poverty is a big issue and has been for a while. It can affect children now and when they become adults. There are children going to bed hungry, not knowing where their next meal is coming from, but Compassion is a Christian organization working to stop child poverty around the world. First, the United States is one of the wealthiest nations in the world, but also has one of the highest poverty rates. The national median income is about $31,000 a year for a family of four and 22 percent of children live in families whose income is below the national poverty level (Ingraham). One in three children are living in poverty today (Ingraham). Next, poverty rates are increasing rapidly. The witness should not be allowed to know the defendant personally because witnesses are a huge part in court cases and memories can easily be changed, witnesses can lie, they can t always be credible, and it is hard to testify against close friends. Orwell relates this topic to political and economic issues to show how the use of English is critical with these aspects. He refers to this topic as a reversible process (Orwell 581) if writers follow his six rules; without them the writing contains staleness of imagery and lack of precision. (Orwell 582). In the midst of such an enchanting story are the Romantic themes, such as a deep appreciation of nature in conjunction with the condemnation of city life, exaltation of emotion over reason along with the defiance of conventional rules and traditions, and interest in local folk/ethnic culture, while providing the reader with plenty of attention to the supernatural. A dead one. Headless! (Lerangis 66). With his newfound faith in the credibility of the legends around the hollow, Ichabod decides that all of the logic and reason he had previously relied on are of no use to him. He puts so many conflicts in the story that all comes back to one huge problem. The theme of this story is to show the way men put their own pride before the law. The way Faulkner shows this theme is by using symbols, conflict, and motifs. This first example of Faulkner using symbolism is by him using the expensive rug he soils. Snopes soils the rug by stepping on it with manure on his shoes; this eventually leads to the destruction of the rug. Growing up is inevitable and is a epidemic people have been trying to battle for years, the same way Peter Pan could not stand to age even a year. This book covers fashions from 1920 to 1924, an often overlooked period of fashion which was a time of transition between the draped and layered fashions of the post World War I era and the free and easy gowns of the jazz age flapper . Before the Roaring Twenties, women were still wearing floor length dresses with corsets, and crinolines, arms and legs were covered, hair was long. • 36. The Novel The Scarlet Letter The Weight of a Name The Scarlet Letter is a timeless novel because of the timeless characters depicted in the piece. Each character was carefully constructed by Nathanial Hawthorne to represent a specific aspect of sin. He used these characters to tell a story that would translate how distorted the Puritans view of sin was. Not only did he thoughtfully plan the characters personalities, backgrounds, and beliefs out in order to convey this distortion of sin, but their names were carefully considered as well. Nathanial Hawthorne purposefully chose the names of the major supporting characters in The Scarlet LetterPearl, Roger Chillingworth, and Arthur Dimmesdale, in order to symbolically hint at the significance of each of these characters in the novel. Hawthorne viewed the greatest sin of all to be hypocrisy, not the sin of adultery that Hester Prynne, the main character in the novel, was found guilty of. Hester had a child born from her adulterous act. This child became the literal embodiment of the sin committed, yet was strategically named Pearl, something pure. People are aggrieved when they hear of the incident and narrate stories of how runaway crime could have increased on Sikhs during the time. The main reason for the advent of the riots was the shooting down of Mrs. Indira Gandhi in morning of 31 October 1984. The riots had started off in the evening just after her morning death. The information of the riots was already taken by Giyani Jail Singhji that meeting of congress leaders Arun Nehru, HKL Bhagat and Jagdish Tytler and more were deciding to give a slogan called khoon ka badla khoon . O Connor meant the mother s death to act as a lesson for Julian who as close minded as his motherwas, must learn to converge or end up like his mother who was killed due to the physical engagement with the black lady as well as their unhealthy relationship. Julian s mother as a little girl was taught that blacks were only meant for one thing, which was to work and live as slaves. The setting of the story was approximately in the 1950s, the time the black Americans were treated as second class citizens and finally raised their voice demanding equal rights under the law. Incidentally, Julian s mother had a different upbringing. She grew up visiting her grandfather in an old mansion where they owned slaves. As a result of this, Mrs.Chestny was taught and raised as her grandfather was, believing in the thought that whites were superior to blacks. She stated that blacks should be given the right to rise, but on their own side of the fence (2). Consequently, Julian s mother was not able to converge in their time and she had to go.... They consider each other their enemies and do whatever it takes to be better than one another. When the enemies need help for same problem, they unite themselves to solve the problem. The short story The Interlopers by Saki is about unification and reveals how enemies become allies in harsh situations. Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym were enemies because Ulrich was the owner of the forest land, and Georg was trying to steal Ulrich s forest land. They met in the middle of the forest and tried to kill each other. However, they were trapped by the huge tree that fell from a fiery storm. Waiting for their men to rescue them, Ulrich offered Georg a wine. Ulrich von Gradwitz told Georg Znaeym that if Ulrich s men come faster than Georg s men then Ulrich will tell the men to rescue Georgefirst, and that they have better things to do than getting the better of a boundary dispute (Saki 86). The quote shows that Ulrich wanted to be friends with Georg rather than fighting over who gets the forest land. Ulrich asked George to be his friend, and George accepted his request. Waiting for their men to come and help them, both wished that their private men would come first so they can be the first to show honorable attention to the other (Saki 87). The Importance Of The Executive Branch In The United States The government of the United States of America has been around for over 2 centuries, in this time the original setup has been little altered. The government is composed of three individual branches: judicial, executive, and legislative branches. All three branches are held together using a system of checks and balances. While each branch has some kind of trump or has control over another branch, some branches are arguably more powerful than others. The main focus of this paper will be on where the executivebranch stands power wise. What inspired me to critically analyze the article Does Divorce Create Long Term Negative Effects for Children? is the challenge it would be for me to put my bias aside considering I am from a divorced home. After reading the article and analyzing it over and over, I can t help but think that the writer answering YES to this controversial question overlooked many variables and over generalized his findings and research. With Zinsmeister overgeneralizing his research, not considering enough alternate explanations for long term negative effects divorce, and his lack of relevant information needed to assess reliability and validity are why I find this article to be insightful but not accurate and hope to show why. In the introduction to the article, the authors David Gately and Andrew Schwebel best wrote Karl Zinsmeister uses studies of children and divorce to argue against the contention made by many parents that it is better to divorce than to rear children in a marriage with conflict. He maintains that children s sense of stability and family structure supersedes parental needs. One of the most critiqued religions of the bunch is Wicca. Since the beginning of it s formation, it has received more than its fair share of assessment, demolition, and genocide. In an article written by Peggy McIntosh titled, White privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack, McIntosh writes about white privilege not being necessarily overt, but embedded and so naturally it is hard to see especially for white people, as it is simply the norm most of them have been born into. White privilege ultimately gives white people an easier life, as they are awarded unearned advantages over people of colour. White people tend to feel more comfortable in lecture and tutorial, as well as with speaking to instructors individually. This leads to a lower student success rate among students who are not white. (Lund 2010, 23) An example of how non white students are made to feel othered is in the book, Racism in the Canadian University: Demanding Social Justice, Inclusion, and Equity. The book interviewed undergraduate and graduate Caribbean students they asked about the university and their experiences with racism, if it was inclusive, as well as welcoming for minorities. Methods In the study, the between groups design and the cross sectional design were used for research. There were 243 participants between the ages of 18 and 39, and the majority were females and Caucasians. The average age was about 21 years old. The measurements used were the Social Rhythm Metric, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Beck Depression Inventory, Second Edition. The PSQI was used to measure perceived sleep quality within the past month. Once the Sleep Quality Index was obtained, the participants were categorized as good sleepers (5) based on scale ranging from 0 to 19. The SRM was used to assess social rhythms. The overall activities performed by a test subject, the number of activities performed involving social interaction, and the number of activities involving minimum to no social interaction were analyzed. The SRM also tracked the regularity of activities, so a hit meant an activity was performed within 45 minutes of the habitual time. The BDI II was used to calculate participants levels of depression. However, this decision only extended to criminal cases and left civil litigants waiting for their own Gideon decision. Fifty five years later, and there is still no universal right to counsel in civil cases. The Supreme Court has failed to utilize opportunities to make a ruling similar to Gideon in civil cases, despite the presence of similar issues. In Lassiter v. Dept. of Soc. In other words, absent a threat of incarceration or extreme circumstances, there is not right to counsel. Lee Shevell, Civil Gideon: The Poor Man s Fight, 16 Public Interest Law Reporter 32 37 (2010). The injustice of incarcerating a defendant that was tried and convicted without the representation of an attorney is an obvious truth. Gideon, 372 U.S. 344. Yet, isn t there truth to the shocking injustice of leaving the poor and most vulnerable without representation for legal issues regarding basic needs such as shelter, food, safety, family and health? The decision in Gideon stressed that a criminal conviction, stripping an individual of their liberty, without the representation of counsel was a grave injustice that violated the dues process clause. The poor are denied due process, suffering a loss liberty and justice because they cannot afford legal representation. The Speaker s Role in Three Poems by Howard, Wyatt, and Raleigh The speakers in Farewell, False Love, by Sir Walter Raleigh and My Lute, Awake! by Sir Thomas Wyatt the Elder have similar motivations, although the poems have differing constructs. Each speaker seeks to unleash his venomous emotions at a woman who has scorned him, by humiliating her through complicated revenge fantasies and savage metaphors. Through this invective, he hopes to convince us of this woman s inward ugliness. The eloquent My Lute, Awake! is ostensibly addressed to the speakers lute and to his lover, but the story that he tells of her cruel rejection, and his predictions of her eventual lonely decrepitude, are clearly meant for our ears, and he is notably aware that we are listening. Although he refers to his lover as thee, he acknowledges early on that she cannot or will not hear him: As to be heard where ear is none, / As lead to grave in marble stone / My song may pierce her heart as soon. In Farewell, False Love, Raleigh does not use the second person, and his motive is obviously to characterize his faithless love before his public. His metaphors are as creative as they are damning, and the verse itself is highly structured: the first stanza deals with his lover s dishonesty, the second with her appearance of sweetness which masks sin ( A poisoned serpent covered all with flowers. . . A gilded hook that holds a poisoned bait ), and so forth. This is no spontaneous outpouring of emotion: it s more like a finely tuned, premeditated character assassination. Raleigh and Wyatt both proclaim stoicism in the face of rejection, contending that they no longer care for their lovers after having been betrayed and rebuffed. Incubation has been widely studied to understand performance, such as in problem solving, enhancing creativity, or its association with unconscious processing. Many studies have found supporting evidence for incubation as a facilitating mechanism for problem solving. Ritter and Dijksterhuis (2014) found that unconscious processing during a period of incubation can positively influence creativity. They argued that it is not only the lack of conscious processing during an incubation period, but rather the presence of unconscious thoughts that heavily influence an individual s level of creativity (Ritter Dijksterhuis, 2014). Gilhooly, Georgiou, Garrison, Reston, and Sirota (2012) found that immediate incubation periods facilitated in creative tasks, such as the Alternative Uses Task (AUT), through unconscious processes. They suggested that delayed incubation periods can be interfered by conscious processing before the incubation period had initiated, where forgetfulness and unconscious processing are both occurring (Gilhooly et al., 2012). In contrast, an immediate incubation period where only unconscious processing takes place and subsequently followed by conscious problem solving post incubation, is more effective for creativity (Gilhooly et al., 2012). Despite the supporting evidence, studies, such as Segal (2004), concluded that his findings did not support the evidence of unconscious processing reported in the current literature. Rather, his results supported his returning act hypothesis that incubation served as a diversion to rearrange possible accurate assumptions when the participants returned to the target task (Segal, 2004).
