live presentation, I committed 100% of myself to the team by being actively involved. My first

The Harlem Renaissance was a significant social and cultural movement throughout the 1920 s and
30 s. It was a time when much of the history of the African Americanpeople were given a voice
through the creative efforts of those who were directly involved and affected by the Great
Migration. It had a great impact on what life was like for these people and their families and
also impacted the society as a whole. This Great Migration began at the end of the start of World
War I from 1917, however many African Americans had begun migrating even before then. After
the Civil War, at the end of the 19th century when the African Americans were no longer bound
to their former masters as slaves, they began to migrate. This was called Reconstruction and
began in 1865. Suddenly everything that they once knew and how they lived changed. They
were free now but not truly considered equal by the whites of the south. They were now forced
to migrate from place to place in order to find work and attempt to build a life for themselves and
their families, and after World War I, they were able to migrate to the north to more urban settings
to find work.# This movement was called the Great Migration and it led to and affected the Harlem

The draw down the Army is currently experiencing introduced changes to the Army s retention
program and the service of some Soldiers is no longer a given. A tri signed memorandum from
senior Army leadership changed the way retention will operate in the future. As a result, Army
leadership implemented the Order of Merit List (OML) causing commanders at all levels to face
tough decisions that will challenge their ethical demeanor. Subjecting our Soldiers to this type of
treatment is unjust. The use of the OML determines the best qualified Soldiers throughout
formations. Though the OML may identify the top performers, it does not take into account the

each commander. Subsequently, every commander had a different perception of what best
qualified meant to them. Within the Third Infantry Division (3ID), they developed an Order of
Merit List (OML) to help commanders identify the best qualified Soldiers in their formations.
This directive came from the 3ID Commanding General (CG). Each brigade constructed an OML
by utilizing Soldiers weapon score, physical fitness test score, if they appeared before a Soldier of
the Month board, previous awards, military and civilian education, deployment history, and the
first line supervisors recommendation to come up with a total point value. The Third Infantry
Commander named this the Commanders Assessment Tool for Retention (CAT R). Soldiers
with the highest score would have the first opportunity to reenlist. Soldiers would have two
weeks to make a decision to reenlist or not. Soldiers that elected not to reenlist went to the
bottom of the OML until the next quarter. This allowed only the best qualified Soldiers to
reenlist. Just as the Army is an all volunteer force so is retention of our Soldiers. This process led
commanders to face tough decisions. By choosing, who gets to reenlist and who does not base
upon how a Soldier performed, it never addressed the Soldiers future potential. The Commanding
General of the Third Infantry Division (3ID) took the tri signed letter out of context. Subjecting
Soldiers to this type of treatment was wrong. These are the very same Soldiers that deployed into
harms way some multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan to defeat our adversaries, and now we are

With this stance they propose that by defining marriage as only legal when it is one man and
one woman that basic human rights are being taken away from Americans. Additionally, they
argue that this is a direct violation of the Declaration of Independence, which states, We hold
these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their
Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of
Happiness. Where the Republican Party makes a very concise and closed definition of marriage
and the Democratic Party pleads for a buffet option; however, with equal rights being such a
spotlighted issue there are also stances in the middle of the liberal and conservative arguments.
Another largely agreed upon opinion is that the Federal and State governments have no right to
define or intervene in marriage and who can and cannot get married because marriage is a
religious practice. Following the belief of separation of church and state, those that take this stance
have a variety of opinions on how this hot button issue should be handled. Most will say that every
definition needs to be thrown out and that for legal or insurance purposes anyone who is married,
regardless of orientation, should have their relationship defined as a Civil Union by the government.
