1. Essay on Teen Smoking
There is a dangerous and burning problem that is rising in teens everywhere.
Smoking in teens is becoming more frequent than ever. To teens it’s just a way to
improve self image while ruining there lives. Teens will light up anywhere now as long
as they are unsupervised. Friends, even parents are buying cigarettes for them now. Teens
aren’t going to quit if no one helps them, and I have the solution.
First off we have to stop the people on TV and on movies to stop smoking. Doing it on
TV makes it look good to teens who watch them. If we get rid of the people on TV doing
it then we can sent out a better message and change teens minds about smoking. Next we
must stop advertising them in magazines and other places. We should take out those ads
and put in other things like sports. If we follow through with this we can make teens think
about smoking less and decrease the number of them smoking. Finally to destroy the
media and advertisements we have to get rid of this apparel. This is a serious part of the
plan, the apparel makes teens think they are cool by wearing it. If we get rid of these
shirts and hats and things that advertise smoking we will see definite change in the teens.
Once I though about it another solution came to mind, education. First things first
we need a year round program like D.A.R.E. Schools everywhere should take 30 or 40
minutes out of every day to teach kids about the risks of smoking. Once we do this kids
will realize what they are doing is stupid and dangerous then quit. There are so many
ways to accomplish our mission but a really good way is to have speakers come in and
talk with the teens. We need to have people who smoked and had cancer and felt the pain
to talk to teens about their habit. Once we do this kids will see they can die and end up
looking like these people and give up. Teachers, Parents everyone that you know should
start up a campaign against smoking. Every block in town people could put up posters
and signs to abolish the smoking problem. When you have all these signs put up the teens
will feel pressured to give up.
Out of the two solutions though both of them are good I feel getting stabbing the
media would have the largest effect. If we destroy the self image teens get from smoking
we will see a huge reaction. It will make teens feel bad for smoking and they’ll think it’s
gross. Teens wont see the celebrities on movies smoking, they wont see cool guys in
magazines smoking which will erode the popularity even more. If teens don’t see cool
guys wearing the clothes they wont feel obligated to either. If everyone has sort of given
up on the cool ads and people smoking then they will think its lame. They won’t want to
be like the girls and guys in magazines and they’ll act more like themselves. By trashing
the smoking propaganda we will see the longest effect. When you educate teens they can
ignore it or forget it. After everything that was cool about smoking disappears we will see
a definite reaction. They will stop and say “Huh that was pretty stupid .” and that will be
it.
Once the battle is over everyone will be happy. This will never happen though if
we don’t act now. Think if nothing is done about this and your son or daughter smokes.
Think about what could happen to them all because of stupid self image. They could get
cancer or even die, will you help?
