Claude Monet is one of the most classic examples of an impressionist artist. Impressionism
originated in France in the 1860 s. It is characterized by visible brush strokes and a focus on
light, texture, and colors rather than looking realistic. Impressionist paintings are extremely
easy to recognize and often elicit strong emotions of tranquility and warmth. Monet had a life
full of ups and downs which shaped his artwork and his paintings and life have also influenced
my own personal style. Monet lived an interesting life full of hardships which inspired his
paintings. He was born in Paris, France on November 14, 1840. At an early age, Monet hated
being confined to the classroom and would rather spend his time being outside or filling
notebooks with drawings. He found support in his artistic efforts from his mother and therefore
was greatly upset by her death in 1857. Monet became well known for his drawings of people
around town and attracted the attention of a local landscape artist, Eugene Boudin. Boudin
introduced Monet to incorporating nature into his art and to painting outside, which would later
become one of Monet s most used techniques. In 1859 Monet moved to Paris to enroll in the
Academie Suisse art school. Monet s paintings were selected to be shown at an important art show
in Paris called the Salon. One of the paintings shown was Woman in Green which featured his
lover, later wife, Camille Doncieux. Despite Monet s small amount of success and notoriety as a

Introduction
Lean and Six Sigma are two different methodologies originally designed to meet the demands of
manufacturing companies. Lean was born in the premises of Toyota and their production system.
Lean is about eliminating waste to improve processes. Six Sigma, on the other hand, is a
management methodology that seeks to eliminate variation in processes (Goldsby Martichenko,
2005). Where these two methodologies meet, is in their final goal of process improvement. With
two different ways of implementation, these methodologies complement each other in practice, this
is why many organizations choose to make a multidisciplinary implementation, and apply both Lean
and Six Sigma to achieve better and longer results.
As organizations demands constantly change, they are also continuously looking for ways meet
this demand and improve their business. This is one of the reasons why the Lean and Six Sigma
methodologies have escalated in a significant manner, dabbling into markets that are not the ones
they were created for in the first place, as healthcare.
This paper attempts to present two different implementations of these methodologies. Mayo clinic,

The Battle of Badr was a decisive battle in the struggle of Mohammad against the Meccan
community. It was fought fifty miles southwest of Medina on March 13, 624 AD. The battle lasted

Thomas Cole uses an implied line to separate the dark, untouched forest and dark sky with the
tranquil, cultivated farmland below. Cole uses an actual line to outline the banks of the
Connecticut River bending through the pastoral land. Actual lines are also used to define the
edge of the horizon in the distance. He also used actual lines to portray the rows of manicured
farmland. The first geometric shape I could make out is the triangle of the tiny easel in the
middle ground. Other geometric shapes include the outlines of the pastures and fields. You see

Cole uses chiaroscuro to create the illusion of the ominous nature of the forest and the dark
clouds, the impression of heavy rain clouds. Cole uses a strong value contrast between the natural
forest and the serine river valley. Light as a medium seems to me defined as actual light, which I
do not believe is used in two dimensional works.
I believe color, and in part lack of, is very important to this masterpiece. Cole colors the river valley
light green and light brown to show vibrancy and cultivation of the cleared fields. He colors the
forest dark green and eliminates colors in the shattered tree trunks and rugged cliffs to show the
natural wonder of the untouched forest. These differences in color show how man is destroying the
natural wilderness in favor of agricultural advancement.
I believe Cole purposely avoided the appearance of unity in this painting. The separation between
the two landscapes was not a peaceful transition. He wanted to show the diversity between the
natural land from the cultivated land.
I believe this painting is intentionally asymmetrical. Again, Cole wanted to show the non peaceful
transition between the two landscapes.

The play, Death of a Salesman , by Arthur Miller, is a tale about a man who is not able to accept
the changes that are happing around him. The main character, Willy Loman, loses his identity
when he is stuck in a dead end job and is unable to provide for his family. He is not able to accept
