Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), formerly known as dysmorphophobia, is characterized by a
preoccupation of one or more perceived defects and or flaws in one s physical appearance.
These defects and or flaws are either not observable to others or appear slightly to other s. This
disorder is also characterized by repetitive behaviors and mental acts as a response to their beliefs
on their personal appearance. These behaviors can include but are not limited to mirror checking,
excessive grooming, skin picking, and comparing ones appearance to others. According to the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM 5; American Psychiatric
Association, 2013), those with this disorder have concerns on their physical appearance... Show

In addition, the DSM 5, this disorder also has a high comorbidity rate with major depressive
disorder (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Another major clinical feature to this
disorder is the repetitive behaviors done to help alleviate the obsessions one is having about
their appearance. Some of these behaviors include seeking reassurance about their looks,
excessive grooming, mirror checking, comparison to others, and trying to camouflage the
perceived defect/flaw. These seem to be the most common behaviors done in association with
BDD, however they are not exclusively limited to this as each individual displays the disorder
uniquely to their preoccupation. In a study of 33 youths with BDD it was found that 94%
camouflaged their defect, 73% sought reassurance from others, and 59% excessively groomed
(Carroll et al., 2002). This disorder can become so clinically significant that many youths avoid
social situations, have issues regarding school, stop working, and become isolated due to fear of
how they think they look to others. On the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) it was found
that a mean score of 44.9 45.7 was reported, indicated serious symptoms and impairment (Phillips
Rogers, 2011). There has yet to be a direct reason that this disorder develops in adolescents and
children,

What Aspects Of The Museum Provide The Visitor With An...
When we say that something is original ... we are referring to the aspect of what can be called
authenticity or genuineness, that which is unique not because it is necessarily different in topic or
technique, but because it embodies one person s experience with deep particularity. This statement,
made by the poet Jane Hirshfield, has provoked a reevaluation of my ideas of an authentic work of
art, especially within the museum. Authenticity has some definite, and some more vague
definitions. In the following paper, I plan to explore what aspects of the museum provide the visitor
with an authentic experience, allowing them to access something authentic. Three institutions will
be examined: Winterthur Museum, Garden Library (Winterthur), the Barnes Foundation, and
Philadelphia s Magic Gardens (PMG); each institution provides the visitor with a different type of
experience, some more authentic than others. I would first like to start by examining Winterthur
within the context of the article, The Precession of Simulacra, by Jean Baudrillard. Baudrillard
describes different levels and types of simulacra that exist, which I view as a sort of scale between
simulation and hyperreality, where the real is something entirely separate. Authenticity falls within
this model in the real. Winterthur exists in a state of hyperreality. It is a historic house, which was
once the home of Henry Francis du Pont, a collector of American decorative arts. In the 1950s the
house was converted

Factors Influencing the Prevelence of Addiction Essay
Addiction Everyday we see and hear news articles and reviews that say: I cannot put down
Twilight... it s addicting! or I m a Breaking Bad addict! The way the term addiction is used in the
media these days, many would overlook its actual significance and the trouble it causes for millions
across the globe. Recently, many individuals have referred to addictionas anything that is a
compulsive need or habit forming, which could involve everything from substances, like nicotine
or alcohol, to activities such as reading a compelling book or getting hooked on a popular
television series. Unfortunately, the word has become overused, over diagnosed, and even used as
an excuse for one s wrong behavior. Needless to say, addiction is, and... Show more content on

The article s authors counter the Choice Model, explaining that a person cannot choose whether to
be addicted or not. They outline the path leading to addiction by emphasizing the cause as a
physical malfunction in the reward circuitry of the brain. They claim that an addict s abnormalities
in his or her reward system causes the addict to achieve the state of euphoria or high by ingesting
substances or addictive behaviors. In addition, one s compulsive behaviors and substance abuse
can hurt the reward system and result in impaired impulse control and addiction (Matesa and
Bickman), so it is a deleterious cycle. Lastly, the article espouses that the Choice Model is in
some way blaming the individual and is a setup for relapse (Matesa and Bickman). Viewing
addiction as a disease, the ASAM says, will make it easier for addicts to receive help and
conquer addiction. Proponents of the Choice Model disagree, explaining that viewing addiction
as a disease is more of a self fulfilling prophecy than a way to draw help. Alternatively, the Choice
Model counters the belief that addiction is a disease, but rather believes it is all a choice when
using substances or taking part in compulsive behaviors. Educator, ex addict, and researcher
Steven Slate first compares the Disease Theory to real diseases in his blog, Addiction Is Not A
Brain Disease, It Is A Choice. Slate comments that: In a true disease, some part of the body is

The Savings Loans Crisis Of The 1980s
The Savings Loans crisis of the 1980s produced the biggest collapse of US financial institutions
since the Great Depression. It emerged due to volatile interest rate climate in late 1970s when
depositors withdrew from these S L institutions in large number and put them in money market
funds where they could get higher returns as these money market funds were not under the
purview of Regulation Q which restricted the interest these S Ls could offer to their depositors.
1)How did the crisis begin? The business of the S L industry was based on the unstable principle
of borrowing short and lending long, so they accepted short term deposits ie their liabilities... Show

This recapitalization bill was used as a bargaining chip against the Bank Board which had
become more rigorous in dealing with these insolvent thrifts. So, recapitalization was postponed
and eventually when it was done, it was too little and already too late. Too little because although
they allowed recapitalisation but along with that, they put a forbearance clause which precluded
the regulators from hastily closing these insolvent firms. And as we know it was this delayed
closure of these failed firms which actually inflated the S L crisis. So, the reluctance of congress
to confront the real size of the crisis and leniency towards the politically influential thrifts
prevented decisive measures from being taken even after the identification of the problem. The
FSLIC recapitalisation bill of 1987 had provision for just around $11 billion when the need was
probably around $40 billion at that time. Later in 1989, Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery,

Van Gogh Implied Depth
Oil on canvas 29 X 36 1/4
1.Line In van Goh s painting we clearly see how every single brush stroke in his painting mainly
consists of soft lines throughout the entire canvas. The sky is depicted with soft lines that curve
as they create a soft movement in the sky. The cypress tree consists of vertical and curved lines as
the tree rises up into the sky. Van Gogh also used a few vertical/horizontal hard lines to create the
spiral church and the rooftops to some of the homes in the village.
2. Implied Depth Van Gogh created depth in his paintingby painting the cypress tree very large as
he placed it on the lower left hand side of his painting. Along with the cypress tree, van Gogh
painted the spiral church right down the center of the canvas to help him create this desirable
depth as he painted the spiral church tiny in comparison to the cypress tree. Another technique
van Gogh used to create depth was the technique of overlapping objects to achieve his desirable
effect of depth, we can clearly see this as the cypress tree overlaps the hills and the sky full of
clouds.
3. Color Van Gogh s use of color in this painting is very simple since he mainly used dark cool
colors such as dark blue, dark green, black, along with a hint of light blue, a couple or orange and
red dashes, and some white. He also used yellow which out of all ... Show more content on

/understand why he decided to used white and yellow in his painting. I personally think he used
white and yellow to light up the dark sky in order to bring light into what seems a quiet small
village. You can see a little bit of light coming from the village as yellow was used to paint the
windows. Although, the entire village seems dark and gloomy along with the sky, we can see how
parts of the sky are portrayed to bring in light an capture your attention as the stars and the moon

Animal Abuse Research Paper
When you come think about pets, your dog or cat, you think of how cute and cuddly they are and
how much you love them and how much they love you. Your pet is like your child, an animal that
will love you unconditionally and it s your responsibility to take good care of it. But there are
some people out there that could care less about the animalthat they decided to bring home. Many
animals are often abused by their owners and a dogor cat doesn t have to be physically abused to
feel neglected. There are two kinds of animal abuse and that is passive abuse and active abuse.
Such things as not providing food or water, or not providing good shelter in bad weather

Animal testing can cause animals stress, sterility and boredom which will then cause some
animals to develop abnormal behaviors such constantly spinning in circles and rocking back and
forth. Some animals might start pulling out their own hair and biting their skin. The animals
shake and cower in fear whenever someone walks past their cages touched by the human. After
encountering life of pain, loneliness and terror, more than likely all of the animals will die.
Puppy mills are legal but can still be classified as animal abuse, which is illegal. Puppies are kept
in tight wire cages in the worst conditions. In the small wire cages puppies will end up getting
hurt, maybe just a scratch or maybe losing a paw because of the holes and sharp wires on the
floor. The puppies receive no medical care which causes puppies to get very sick and spread
diseases. Dogs are killed once they are too old or too sick to reproduce (Animal Abuse
Solutions). The only way we are going to be able to solve animal cruelty not just in America, but
all around the world is if we talk. It in the children s hands because they are our future and it s up
to them to end it, so we must teach them

United Nations Population Fund And Its Effect On Society...
For many people, the most magical day of their life is the day they marry the love of their life.
After years of searching for that one special person, you have finally committed yourself to
spend the rest of your days on earth growing with that one special someone. Unfortunately
marriage isn t always so special. For some, it is a sentence to slavery. Today, one out of every
three girls in the developing world is married before the age of eighteen with the largest
concentration existing in Southwest Asia ( United Nations Population Fund ). The marrying of
young boys and girls, even in cases where it is not forced, can lead to physical abuse and torture,
health complications and the termination of any possible future educational endeavors (
International Center for Research on Women , 2006).
For the nation of Pakistan, approximately 21 percent of young girls are married before the age of
18, and many of these marriages are forced ( Girls Not Brides ). Although this number is lower
than the regional average, the forced marriage problem in Pakistan is highly concentrated in poorer
areas, endangering those who are socioeconomically at risk. Furthermore, Pakistan ranks as the
sixth most populated country in the world, exemplifying the devastating amount of young girls at
risk for forced child marriage. Note that both girls and boys are affected by child marriage, but
girls represent the overwhelming majority of those sold into marriage (Ahmad, 2014).

the camera remains on the interviewee so the audience can resonate with what they just said.
Non diegetic sound is also used fittingly in The Tall Man. In interviews, often there is subtle
instrumentals playing. When the film is detailing more of the distressing components of this
case, suspenseful and tense music is playing. One key scene where non diegetic sound is
utilised, is when a picture of Doomadgee is focused slowly zoomed to and in the background the

African Bushmen And Iroquois Creation Myths
Compare and Contrast: The African Bushmen Creation Myth and the Iroquois Creation Myth
All around the world are different kinds of creation myths on how earth, animals, and life came to
be. Not one creation myth is the same to another. Every single creation myth is like a snowflake,
unique in its own way. Creation myths can vary on how earth and humanity were created, but all
creation myths always have the concept of life. The African Bushmen Creation Myth and Iroquois
Creation Myth both are alike and different in many ways. These myths are similar in the way of
how each paint a picture of creation. On the other hand, both are very different thus contrasting each
other like day and night. In this essay, I will be discussing the similarities and differences in both
The African Bushmen and Iroquois Creation Myths.
First, we will discuss and examine the similarity s in these creation myths. Both myths have many
shared themes throughout each story, as do lots of other variations of Creation Myths. For example,
some main similar points in these mythical stories include, peaceful beginning, the importance of
animals, punishment, and a bad/sad story turning event. Similarly, both stories start out with the
world being peaceful it was stated that there was no pain, and everyone got along happily. Another
major part of both myths was how they observed the animals. Alike to the Iroquois people, the

Essay about Glycolic Acid
Glycolic acid is a group of chemicals known as alpha hydroxyl acids or fruit acids. It is mainly
derived from sugar cane, and hence it is a natural product. The citric acid found in oranges and
other citrus fruits also come under the same division as glycolic acids. The glycolic acid acne
treatment can be effectively used to treat some cases of acne.
Glycolic acid is mostly used in cosmetic forms rather than industrial. It is usually used as a skin
exfoliant and a moisturizer. Some proponents of glycolic acid state that the products which contain
less than 10% concentration of glycolic acid is rendered useless. The government considers the

These chemical peels can also be used for improving the appearance of the skin which is damaged
by previous acne scarring.
Characteristics of glycolic acid
Glycolic acid acne therapy is basically derived from sugar cane. It is a member of the alpha
hydroxyl family of ingredients which are used in skin care and cosmetic treatments. the glycolic
acid is an important part of the light chemical peels, used by the skin specialists to loosen the
black heads and also reduce the number of papules which are caused due to acne. Glycolic acid is
also used in superficial to moderate chemical peels which are used to remove the acne damaged
tissues to allow a new and fresh skin to appear.
Effects of glycolic acid acne treatment
Glycolic acid can make the skin sensitive than normal. This is why it is best to always test a small
area of the skin before you start using the glycolic acid acne treatment on your skin.
Glycolic acid exfoliates the skin. The glycolic acid travels deep below the acne blemishes and
breaks down the dead skin cells that are clogging the pores.
Glycolic acid also has an ability to moisturize your skin after it removes the dead skin cells. This
allows the acne prone skin to remain moisturized and prevent drying out and promoting more
production of more oil to compensate for the moisture that was lost in the treatment process.
When you are using the glycolic acid acne products, prevent sun exposure on your skin or

Henry Thoreau Essay
Born in 1817, in Concord, Henry David Thoreau became one of the greatest writers among the
American Renaissance. Thoreau based his whole philosophy on the fact that man needed to get rid
of material things in order to be an individual. An exquisitely educated man, Thoreau went to
Harvard, which placed heavy emphasis on the classics. Thoreaustudied a curriculum that included
grammar and composition, mathematics, English, history, and various philosophies. He also spoke
fluently in Italian, French, German, and Spanish.
After his graduation in 1837, Thoreau became a teacher. He and his brother John, however, closed

quot;I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude. quot; Thoreau liked
solitude, a time when he wrote from his soul and was truly alone. Thoreau s love for nature was
one of the most powerful aspects evident in Walden.
Considered by some to be the father of the environmental movement, Thoreau referred back to
nature in everything he wrote from essays to political speeches. As a simple man, Thoreau did not
own many material things. For he believed that to own material objects were an obstacle, rather
than an advantage. He saw that most people measured self worth in terms of what they owned,
rather than their spiritual and intellectual gifts.
Thoreau proposed to live as simply as possible and determine what he needed for basic human
survival. quot;My greatest skill is to want but little. quot; He grew his own food, cleaned his
own cabin, and often arranged his affairs so he had to work as little as possible. Published on
August 9, 1854, Walden sold two thousand copies. For one dollar, people read into the depths of

The Pros And Cons Of The Patriot Act
After the September 11th terrorist attacks, the United States was left in a weakened state of fear.
Government officials quickly scrambled to calm the mass panic which resulted in the speedy
passing of the Patriot Act. The Patriot, or what is more formally known as the Providing
Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism act, was established to provide the
government with the implements it needed to stop terrorists operating on American soil. While the
Patriot Act does have an important goal of obstructing terrorism, it achieves this goal at the expense
of our individual liberties given to us by the Constitution. Firstly, the Patriot Act violates the Fourth
Amendment to the United States Constitutionby allowing the government to conduct secret searches
of citizens property undermining the amendment s principle of search and seizure only with a
warrant. The Fourth Amendment protects us from searches and seizures without a warrant or
probable cause. However, sections of the Patriot Act can be seen undermining this American
prerogative. The American Civil Liberties Unionexplains, Section 213 of the Patriot Act justifies
the allowance of secret searches. Secret searches permit the government to search the owner s
private property without having to notify them (ACLU). This section has caused for the mass
surveillance of not only possible terrorists but also innocent American citizens. The government not

The Austen children grew up being encouraged to learn by extensive reading from their father s
library and to be creative thinkers. Jane and her sister were sent to a boarding school so they
would have a formal education. Jane started to write romantic fiction as a young teen. After Jane s
father died, she and her sister had financial difficulties much like the Elliot s did in Persuasion. Jane
Austen s life seems to be closely related to many of the situations and characters in the lives of
the female characters she writes about in her novels. Jane was also persuaded by her father and
a female mentor to not to love a man because they believed he could not provide for her
financially and he was not of a high social status. This situation can be compared to Anne Elliot s
character when she was persuaded by her father and mentor, Lady Russell, to give up her love of
and engagement to Captain Fredrick Wentworth, a British naval officer. They found him to be an
unsuitable choice because of his lack of money and connections in society. Jane Austen wrote about
real life issues of manner, upbringing of children, morality, education, and marriagein a society of
high social status and position. Jane Austen s family was well respected members of their
community, much like the Elliot family. Jane s status as a single woman did not upset her like
other single women. The lack of a husband allowed her the freedom to concentrate on her novels,
and gave her the opportunity to be a great observer of the actions of those around her, especially in
the study of complex classes and gender relationships which were an important part of life in the
early nineteenth century English

Benin Home Chapter 19 Summary
In chapter 19 memories and experiences play a role in transitioning from one place to another.
Chapter 19 starts off with Ishmael transitioning from Benin Home to live with his uncle Tommy
and his family. This transition would seem effortless and simple to the naked eye because Beah is
now connected with a part of his family. However for Ishmael it was more difficult than it would
appear. On page 182 Ishmael describes his first night, I sighed sitting alone on the verandah. I
was no longer nervous, but I missed Benin Home. (Ishmael Beah 182). 1. How do Ishmael s
memories and experiences hold him back from now being happy in his new home and life?

On page 184 he says, A memory of a town we attacked during a school dance had been triggered.
I could hear the terrified cries of teachers and students, could see the blood cover the dance floor.
(184). Also on 190 he describes, Standing next to a tree with red frozen sap on its bark would
bring flashbacks of the many times we executed prisoners by tying them to the trees and
shooting them. Their blood stained the trees and never washed off. (190). While Ishmael has
been rehabilitated certain parts of life now trigger his gruesome memories. Such as getting
firewood with his cousins and seeing the trees with red frozen sap, and being on the dance floor
with Allie. Ishmael while he does still get flashbacks is for the most part fully recovered. In this
chapter the transition to the United States was frustrating for Ishmael. Many people made him
aggravated by the things they said or did. On page 187 he says after his interview to go to the
U.N, I still wondered why the man who had interviewed me had smiled. I meant what I said and it
was not a funny matter. (187). 2.Why does Ishmael become so frustrated with people who are

HOPE Program Agency Case Study
HOPE Program Agency: Promoting Inclusion
The HOPE program is an agency, which firmly believes in the power of inclusion. Alongside
inclusion, the HOPE program provides other services that will help children with developmental
delays. The program offered through the San Diego Office of Education located at 6401 Linda
Vista Road in San Diego, California 92111. The mission statement and philosophy is built around
Carl Dunst s theory on enabling and empowering families. The HOPE program also believes in
helping the families, and the staff work with them, collaborating. They believe in reciprocal
relationships, and that relationships are the foundation for all learning. The program also supports
the family in their beliefs, values, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are also family support services such as parent to parent support, parent education, and
information and parent support groups. All these services and support remind me of Erikson s
first stage of trust versus mistrust. I think HOPE tries to establish trust for the children by making
sure their basic needs are met and that they are being cared for. The support provided by HOPE to
the caregivers, in my opinion, help facilitate bonds of trust to form. Having a child with
developmental delays may be challenging to caregivers, therefore maybe making it hard to form
bonds between child and parent. Having the support from HOPE, may alleviate that stress, building
a stronger sense of trust between the caregivers and child. I also believes this fosters the importance
of the reciprocal relationship because once the trust has been built; the child will have increased
confidence in what the caregiver expects. I loved learning just how many services are offered
through this program, they believe in helping families and offering them the support they need to
help their child grow. As a microsystem, HOPE offers opportunities for children to interact with
other peers in school settings. The mesosystem, as exemplified by the link between schools and
families, can empower families to share the responsibility for creating a safe school environment

The Battle Of Elsenborn Ridge
Battle of Elsenborn Ridge
The winter in the Ardennes is very cold; American Soldiers beaten, bloodied and depleting in
numbers. Germany has massed their best Soldiers from the Twelfth SS Panzer Division fielding the
newest and deadliest Armored Fighting vehicles the world had ever seen. However, the Americans
have an ace in the hole, The United States Army Field Artillery has made some historic and very
deadly innovations. In order to defend the Northern shoulder from being overrun by the 1st SS
Panzer Corps and the 67th Corps, the 405th FA Battalion must utilize their fortified fighting
positions to capitalize on the advancing enemy, synchronize and mass their firing capability, and
utilize a newly developed secret weapon called the Proximity Fuze to prevent the German forces
from obtaining a supply through the Twin Villages.
For seven days, the Battle of Elsenborn Ridge was valorously held by the artillery forces and
Infantry forces of the United States Army. (Starmann R. , 2015). This battle was the greatest
crushing victory of the Ardennes valley and is the only part of the Battle of the Bulge line where
the Germans failed to advance. (Starmann R. , 2015). From this ridge, the United States forces
were extremely trenched in. They used the few days leading up to this battle to maneuver more
units to the ridge to help protect the Germans from securing the two villages. These villages were
critical to the Germans because without them they would not be able to resupply

Argumentative Essay On Why Women Wear Flops
The men who work in an office building wear nice dress pants, a nice shirt, and dress shoes. The
women on the other hand are expected to wear a dress, nice dress pants, a blouse, and sandals or
heels. It is really hot so if your office has air conditioning you might wear a jacket. Everyone who
works in a professional business is not only looked at by their clothes, but their appearance too.
Everyone in Panama wears light clothes so they aren t constantly sweating. Due to the heat
normally everyone wears tank tops, tee shirts, shorts, and flipflops unless going in a government
building or a nice place. Men wear shorts and flip flops unless going to work or a special
occasion. When going to church or court people do not wear shorts or flip flops. Women tend to

Davis Guggenheim Documentary Analysis
What are you grateful for? What matters most for you? Is it money, is it family? Have you
thought about education and its big role it plays to get you to a future you want and will like?
In this well written documentary directed by Davis Guggenheim, the question of the matter is
the American education system, and its backlash on poverty and areas of need. He follows a
couple unlikely kids and their struggle to get into a average school and how failure to just get
into a school like this is the downfall of someone s future career. This documentary relates so well
to previous reads and watches about the American education system. Involving speeches like Sir
Ken Robinson and the book Re reading America, in correlation with Guggenheim s piece of work.
This portrayal of education depicts harrowing stories of how some kids growing up in places where
education is non existent and failure is common. He uses an array of techniques to capture to
attention of the audience and change their perceptionof opinions. And he does this through the use
of pathos, but in the work of that pathos he builds it with the help of musicand tone. These emotions
certainly grab the audience s attention and beliefs, and uses it to express the opinion and
characteristic of the topic argument. Within Guggenheim s excellent piece of work there are key
components that give his artwork a more visual and thorough meaning along with the story. To start

Our Nig; or Sketches from the life of a Free Black and A Narrative of the Captivity and
Restauration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson Harriet Wilson s and Mary Rowlandson s captivity

demonstrate the isolation felt by the prisoner. Our Nig: or, Sketches from the Life of a Free Black

the discourse of national rights and of God s challenges to the nation. (Heath Anthology, 340).
Rowlandson s narrative fueled the idea of the savage nature of the Native Americans, while
Wilson s novel exposed the savage treatment of free blacks in the North prior to the civil war.

Germany has decreased significantly in the last few decades. Nearly seventy five percent of the
insects in the nature reserves have been wiped out, leaving only twenty five percent left. Due to
this significant decrease, it is expected for the food web to be widely affected since many other
animals rely on these insects as a source of food. One of the insects that are dying out is the
honeybee, which can affect humans since these bees are needed to pollinate crops. Honeybees are a

According to Ramstad, Alegra was put into detention because of a threat made to another
student, which was a complete misunderstanding. Alegra was simply sticking up for herself after
being bullied by the same student for the past year (9 News). As a result of the incident, the
parents decided to hire an attorney named Igor Raykin and may file a lawsuit against the school
for the traumatization of their daughter. Soon after the Douglas County School District General
Counsel provided a statement to the community mentioning that the safety and well being of the
students are a top priority. They also discussed how the detention room allows freedom for
students to work on their homework and leave the room when needed. However, this freedom
was not demonstrated when Ramstad arrived at the school to see her daughter in one of the
rooms. The incident sparks controversy of the school s treatment of children and brings up the
question of how many other children were put into this cell and if these children s parents were
aware of this occurrence. If so, a lawsuit should be filed against the school against those parents
as well. It is sad to see the actions this elementary school decided to take in order to fix these
children s behavioral issues or in this case a misunderstood situation. Hopefully, this news story will
help the school realize their idea of detention is inhumane and degrading.

Staining Teeth Essay
Logically, we could assume that coffee isn t the only substance that has ever stained your teeth.
Especially if you have been accumulating stains over the long term. Therefore, you want to first cut
out anything else that may be sabotaging your smile.
You have the usual suspects, like dark berries and cola. But a few other surprising foods and drinks
could be making your stains more obvious.
For example, if you think that sticking to white wine is better for white teeth, you may be wrong.
As it turns out, the acidity in white wine can make your enamel more porous.
So when you do eat or drink something that is overtly staining, it travels deeper into the surface of
the tooth. This can make the stain darker, more obvious, and tougher to ... Show more content on

7. Change the way you brew. And for that matter, the way you grind. Dr. Scott Frey of FreySmiles
has done quite a bit of legwork in determining which methods stain the most.
According to his findings, Turkish and espresso making methods carry the most stain creating
probability. Additionally, he estimates that many household coffeemakers are comparable to the
pour over method. The pour over comes in at number four on the spectrum of methods that stain
teeth.
All the way at the very bottom is the cold brew method. Using coarsely ground beans, this method
is hypothesized to have the least negative impact on maintaining white teeth. Contrary to what the
name implies, you don t have to drink cold brew cold. By all means, heat it up!
It s also ridiculously easy to make at home, which is nice considering how trendy it s becoming. To
make cold brew, all you need is coarsely ground coffee, a sterilized jar, cold brew coffee bags, and
water. Or, just get an infusing pitcher suitable for cold brew.
Let the coffee and water steep together for 24 hours before straining well. That sounds like a long
time to make coffee, right? But the good news here is that you can make a large batch and store it
in the fridge. It will stay fresh for weeks!
On top of keeping your smile white, cold brew is much less acidic. And although I m not big on
coffee, I think it tastes much better than the countertop drip

The Themes And Government Of 1984 By George Orwell
The topics and themes of which an author chooses to write reveals a lot about their unique
perspective of the world. One may be able to read a novel and understand the surface level
descriptions of the plot and characters, but it takes a true critical thinker to analyze the symbolism
the author may have intended. Many books reflect this, from Lord of the Flies to Moby Dick, and
then to George Orwells 1984. The underlying cynicism of Winston Smith s actual name, The
Party, and eventually Winston s love of Big Brother, speaks a greater truth than a first glance
may reveal. Orwell used this novel as an outlet to speak out about the events around him, thus
creating a phenomenon that has stood the test of time for decades. The themes and government
of 1984 by George Orwell were influenced by Orwell s personal situation and upbringing,
historical events of the 1940s, and reflect the worldwide governments of 2017. While 1984 may
send the reader into many different trains of thought as the story progresses, it is very beneficial
to track the controversial novel down to the source: Eric Arthur Blair. He was born into a poor
household without much of a father figure, and led a mediocre educational career. He often
resisted authority and ended up joining the Indian Imperial Police without a college education.
Blair was described as very rebellious and served for five years before moving to the city and
immersing himself in his writing, thus adopting the penname, George Orwell.

The Main Duty Of A Pharmacist
The main duty of a pharmacist is to counsel patients and optimize their medication therapy. In order
to carry out this responsibility, a pharmacist has to develop a relationship with the patient.
Establishing an interpersonal relationship with patients requires the understanding of three
concepts: initiating, sustaining and terminating the interpersonal relationship.
When it comes to initial contact with a person, typically the primary objective is to initiate a
relationship and get to know the person better. An article written by Marcia Alesan Dawkins titled
How it s Done: Using Hitch as a Guide to Uncertainty Reduction Theory, discusses how one can
effectively reduce uncertainty when initiating relationships. According to the article, there are three
conditions that involve uncertainty reduction. The first is a person s perception of reward and
punishment . When individuals encounter somebody for the first time, they typically try to find out
whether that person has the potential to reward them by giving a positive experience or whether
that person can punish them, giving them a negative experience. The next condition is a person s
perceived expected behavior. If an individual walks up to somebody and expects to be greeted
warmly, but instead is given the cold shoulder, this will increase the amount of uncertainty present
between the two. Finally, the third condition the article mentions is when a person expects future
interactions. If an individual expects to

Violence in the Arts В– Plato vs. Aristotle Essay
Violence in The Arts В– Plato vs. Aristotle
Nowadays, it is hard to turn on a television program, catch a movie or buy your younger sibling a
video game without encountering a warning for extreme violence. Everyday, our lives are
exposed to violence on the screen, whether it is in the latest Sopranos episode or even watching
the six o clock news. For quite a while now, people have been demanding that stricter censorship
be placed on the media, especially those programs and video games that can easily be obtained by
the youth, due to their feelings that this violence can influence people to act out . However, this is
not a new idea. Back in ancient Greece, the philosopher Plato believed that exposure to the

Plato perceived the dramas as dangerous, because he felt that they created confusion,
miscommunication and ignorance. He also felt that the entire world s evils came from a defective
sense of reality and that these dramas promoted that. For example, take a young child who grew up
somewhat isolated from the outside world and whose only outlet to our society is through the
media. His steady contact with violent programs (which in the end, show a happy conclusion no
matter what happens throughout) may convince him that this type of behavior is normal and
accepted. Plato was concerned especially about the influence that drama and even pornography
would have on children, because he felt that their minds were not developed to the full extent in
order to differentiate between the right and wrong that they see in the dramas. Many people will
be quick to agree that a child should not watch a rated R action movie, yet they still allow them to
view a Saturday morning cartoon in which the main character gets run over every episode and still
comes back the next week. This can create a faulty understanding of reality to a child, as well as an
unsuspecting adult, because it does not clarify that death is final.
What about the movies that emulate and perhaps glorify the lives of drug dealers and gangs? Are
they encouraging one to participate in

During the creation process of the jack o lantern, news concerning Dacca, Mr. Pirzada s

knife makes a gash, ruining the otherwise perfect pumpkin. When Mr. Pirzada carves the jack o

The X Ray Vision Of Superman
It s a bird! It s a plane! It s Superman! In 1938, Action Comics #1, released the first Superman
comic to the public. Superman, also known as Kal El, has shown many different powers since
his first debut in 1938. This paper will discuss various topics about four of his major powers and
explain why they are all impossible for anyone to achieve in real life. Supermans four major powers
that will be discussed in this paper are X ray vision, being able to fly, super strength, and
invulnerability.
The X ray was first discovered in 1895 by a German physicist named W.C. Roentgen ( The
Discovery ). W.C. Roentgen was working in a lab one day in 1895 and decided to send a high
electrical current through a cathode ray filled with special gas. He realized that a dim green
colored light was being produced, and decided to hold the cathode ray just above his wife s
hand. When he did this he observed that the light was able to penetrate human skin, but would
leave all the bones visible. There is a picture below of the X ray of W.C. Roentgen s wife s hand (
The Discovery ). He named it the X ray because he did not know the identity of what kind of ray
it was. He just named it X, because of its use in solving unknowns in algebraic equations ( The
Discovery ).
However, there are some limitations on this Superman power in both the laws of physics and in the
laws of the human body. The first restriction is that in an X ray, tiny rays will pass through any
atoms that don t have enough mass

than resorting to alcohol, drugs, or simply avoiding the problem, students can turn to something
else that should not only reduce stress, but also still uses their brain without overstimulating it. The
answer is paper airplanes. According to the University of Guelph (n.d.), breaks help reduce stress,
sustain motivation and increase productivity . Additionally, they believe for about every hour

The participants are students at Iowa State University. The three criteria include: distance, time
aloft, and clarity of instructions.
DISCUSSION Distance
Explanation
Distance is how far the plane traveled to. The distance recorded begins from where the
participant stood to where the airplane landed. One of the two categories The Buzz is known
for, is its distance according to Fold N Fly (n.d.). The site describes it to resemble a fly and fly well
. Since distance is part of The Buzz s character, it is suitable to test how well it can fly. To many
students, any airplane that travels a few feet would be considered a fair distance. It was
determined before the tests that over 5 feet (60 inches) would be deemed as a successful distance.
Data
Each student had two attempts to get a full picture of the airplane s capabilities. Figure 1 represents
a comparative visual of the differing flight distances between participants and their two tests. The
tests were done in a participant s living room.

Analysis Of Gbowee Gbowee And A Fighter For Peace,...
Leymah Gbowee is introduced as a Nobel Laureate and a fighter for peace, freedom, and women s
rights in her home country of Liberia; primarily throughout their civil war. She begins by walking
the audience through several of the key stages of protesting. Gboweee discusses her troubles,
seemingly insurmountable obstacles at times, and successes. She also discusses how she was
singled out to be a leader among the protesting women of Liberia. As a leader she and her fellow
protestors gave demands to the President of Liberia himself and went as far as taking control of a
government building until a peace resolution was signed. She finishes this interview by answering
questions by the Columbia audiencein regards to US and other foreign... Show more content on

Also, most people who would be interested in taking the time to watch this would be somewhat
familiar with Gbowee or the plight of Liberia. There is also the possibility of future students in
Women s studies courses, intercultural communication, or otherwise at Columbia and other schools
watching this to gain additional perspective.
During this interview Leymah Gbowee goes into extensive detail about her life growing up in
war torn Liberia. She clearly states that she endured 14 years of war and suffering before any
real progress was made. She traveled, organized, and brought people together when war was
working so hard to tear the country apart. Her credibility is, in this way, established early on. It is
particularly hard to refute her claims when she talks about having her fear stripped away over the
many years of conflict. The fact that she survive alone was impressive considering her views, but
the fact that she organized and instilled hope in so many other women shows the true depth of her
credibility.
Her obvious authority was placed on her by the other women around her who saw her strengths
as a leader. Some people are born a leader, some are molded into them, Gbowee was most likely a
little of each and her fellow protestors understood and recognized her leadership abilities. She was
the one at the forefront of the protests and helped spread the message far and wide. When the
group was set

Athabasca Sands Case Study
To what extent does the Athabasca Oil Sands take responsibility in promoting environmental
stewardship? The Oil Sands are a mixture of sand, water, clay and bitumen. Bitumen is oil that is
too heavy or thick to flow or be pumped without being diluted or heated. Throughout many decades,
the environment has become a critical concern, and the responsibility the Oil Sandshas taken is
preposterous. The GHG (greenhouse gas emissions) emissions that are released into the
environment undermines its practices. The only way environmental stewardship can be
encouraged, is if the Oil Sands discontinues its oil development. Other alternatives such as stricter
rules and regulations should be placed by the government of Albertato ameliorate the environment.

The Athabasca Delta is a breeding ground for species of birds, which was destroyed to clear the
land for oil development. These development practices are a leading factor towards increases in
pollution. A scientific panel stated on Tuesday that pollution must be corrected, as there are major
debates against the oil sands development. Proponents argue that business through the Oil Sands
has made Canada a major player in foreign supplement. Unemployment rates have decreased across
Canada and companies generate huge profits. The Alberta Oil Sands provide Canada with a secure
source of energy. Throughout the world, Canadian oil reserves are the second largest in the world.
Oil mining operations in Canada also help create more trading partnerships with different countries.
This is a great way Canada can strengthen relationships and ties with various nation states. The Oil
Sands is a stabilizing force for Canada s economy, yet it has a tremendous effect on the
environment. Corporations are held responsible for their actions, and environmental protection
should be their main concern. The procedures that the Oil Sands has taken are not effective, to an
extent, where the pace of investment and development in the oil sands

to be the submissive wife, surprisingly, it was Katherina who show up right away to her husband

Making Sex, A And Of The One Sex Model Essay
Unit Two Sex is a complicated topic for a variety of reasons; one of which is how he differences
between men and women are described and explained. In Laqueur s book, Making Sex, a
discretion of the one sex model is given along with several contributing factors to the shift to a
two sex model. In this paper I would like to touch on some of the influences given in the book
and out as evidence for my own interpretation of how our current model developed. With the
coming of the modern age came a rapid influx of ideas; it was a time for revolutions to be made.
I d like to start a bit before this time though to see how the shift began. In the premodern era
conquering other peoples was very common. In a sense it was conquer, or be conquered. We
rationalized that some people had progressed faster than others, and therefore that is why they
were able to overtake other communities or nations. These people were civilized and the others
savage . This difference in progress was a driving force in developing technologies and ideas to
stay above the people it ruled over. To do this, a strong military and economy was needed. The
developed nations needed the strongest population to defend, invade, produce, and profit. In
addition to this, the ruling class felt that it was not fair to leave their colonies so underdeveloped;
so in order to prevent the progression gap from widening it sought to help the poor savages. This
was achieved by several efforts to better the health of societies

Slavery in the South Essay
Slavery in the South
A large majority of whites in the South supported slavery even though fewer of a quarter of them
owned slaves because they felt that it was a necessary evil and that it was an important Southern
institution. In 1800 the population of the United States included 893,602 slaves, of which only
36,505 were in the northern states. Vermont, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Rhode Island,
Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey provided for the emancipation of their slaves before 1804,
most of them by gradual measures. The 3,953,760 slaves at the census of 1860 were in the southern
states. Eminent statesmen from the earliest period of the national existence, such as Thomas
Jefferson and George Washington regarded slavery... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If at one time slavery had been common in much of the Americas, by the middle of the 19th century
it remained only in Brazil, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the southern United States. In an era that
celebrated liberty and equality, the slaveholding Southern states appeared backward and repressive.
This drew most Northerner s into the abolitionist movement not so much for the behalf of slaves,
but how slavery made the United States look. Despite this, the slave economy grew rapidly,
enriched by the spectacular increase in cotton cultivation to meet the growing demand of Northern
and European textile manufacturers. Southern economic growth, however, was based largely on
cultivating more land. The South did not undergo the industrial revolution that was beginning to
transform the North; the South remained almost entirely rural. In 1860 there were only five
Southern cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants (only one of which, New Orleans, was in the
Deep South); less than 10 percent of Southerners lived in towns of at least 2500 people, compared
to more than 25 percent of Northerners. The South also increasingly lagged in other indications of
modernization, from railroad construction to literacy and public education. For these reasons, many
Southerners felt that slavery was all too necessary because their agrarian economy was based
around it. Many feared that the abolition of slavery would result in a Southern economic collapse.

How The French Presidential Elections Will Affect The...
How the French Presidential Elections will Affect the Entire World
After rejecting the two major political parties in the first round, the French voters will choose their
new president. What will the election result mean for the world?
After the Brexit results in the UK and Trump s election in the US, France is next to face the
challenge of elections on May the 7th for their second round. Debating the subject is William
Callanan, 45, an American citizen living in Britain for the last 15 years and partner at Keysquare
Capital Management. He agreed in an interview to share his opinion on how the French elections
will have a major impact across the world. But first, let s meet the candidates.

Callanan thinks Macron will align with Fillon on the centre right, making Le pen garner less votes,
suggesting the first round s outcome is an indication of what the ending bias will likely be.
Will a new president be the end of old politics in France? Just over a month after the new
president will be elected, she/he will start building their coalition in the Assembly Nationale. It
will be a real challenge for both, says Callanan as a new party has never gained a majority. He
paused. But Macron has a better chance than Le Pen.
One important issue that the new president will need to address is on the national security, as
terrorist attacks are at their peek right now in France. While Le Pen is focused on immigration,
Macron is focused on adding 50,000 police and specialised training. When asked who will appeal
more to the public, Callanan said people become more accustomed to these events and the shock
effect is mitigated. Think of what it is like living in Beirut...
Will Le Pen s claim of deporting all foreigners suspected of a connection to radical Islamism make
France safer? Definitely not, replied Mr. Callanan, on the contrary, the anti immigration and anti
Islam stance can be taken too far and be counter productive.
Le Pen has said that France should be less naive as it became a jihadi university. Will her
presidency affect the relations with the Middle East? Which key policies should France pursue in

What Is The Relationship Between Of Mice And Men
Of Mice and Men, is a world famous novel which was written by John Steinbeck back in 1937.
The novel is mainly about George and Lennie and their life. But I am not going to write about that.
I am mainly going to focus on the characters which live on the ranch in the book (Crooks, Candy,
Curley and Slim).
These are the characters which work on the ranch:
Crooks takes care of the horses on the ranch. He has quite the history with those animals, the
reason why he is called Crooks is that a horse kicked him and that left him with a crooked back.
Crooks is the only black man on the ranch, therefore he lives alone in his own place in the barn
with the animals. Candy is in a similar position to Crooks, they are both rejected by the ranch hands,

The Catalyst Behind The American Revolution
The American Revolution was more of a war for independence than an actual revolution. No
centuries old social orders were toppled like in the French Revolution. The catalyst behind the
American Revolution was the effect that certain English acts of legislation were having on the
American elite. For example, contrary to popular thought, the Tea Act actually lowered the price of
legitimately imported British tea which as a result became more popular than smuggled tea. The
Stamp Act also affected the American elite and had a negligible effect on the rest of Americans.
While the elite benefitted from independence, the rest of America was actually worse off
immediately following the Revolution. The Articles of Confederation set up a very weak

Bullfrogs as most of the other frogs and toads, are faced with an unusual locomotory challenge.
They have to swim and jump using primary the hind limbs. The foot possess five rays and hand
posses fore rays. Hind limbs and fore limbs posses a web like structure to help frog locomotion also
in water (Nauwalaerts, Sandra et al, 2007).
Respiratory system
Bullfrogs as many other amphibians use three respiratory surfaces for gas exchange: skin, mouth,
and lungs. In bullfrogs lungs are present in adults
(Hickman, 2006). On land Bullfrogs breath with their mouths closed. Bullfrogs present a positive
lung pressure for breathing (Heckman, 2007). Their throat movements pull air through the nostrils
to the lungs. Then breathe out with body contractions. Bullfrogs can also respire under the water
through the skin using a process called cutaneous gas exchange. They use their skin for oxygen
/carbon dioxide exchange (Stinner N, Jerry, and Shoemaker, H. Vaughan, 1987)
Digestive system
Bullfrogs are voracious eaters, and will eat just about any animal they can swallow. These include:
insects, crayfish, worms, minnows, other frogs (even Bullfrogs), small turtles, snakes, baby birds,
and small mammals. They are most active at night.
The frog digestive system, like most other digestive systems, starts in the mouth. Prey, which is
sometimes caught by the frog s sticky tongue, is diced by tooth like structures in the mouth. The

Carbon Emissions From Motor Vehicles For The Future
REPORT ON LOWER CARBON EMISSIONS FROM MOTOR VEHICLES FOR THE FUTURE

ABSTRACT
The ever increasing carbon emissions from the automobiles all around the world has forced the
incorporation of novel , more sustainable means of non conventional fuels for the automobiles
like the hybrid cars , solar vehicles , the use of gasohol and alcohol based fuels is also considered
as an alternative for the conventional fuels and also the development of solar electric hybrid
vehicle. There are a lot of possibilities and feasible solutions for lowering the carbon emissions
from vehicles.

The trap oxidizer development in Greece is one of many scientific research done to reduce vehicle
emissions. The carbon dioxide capture using nanostructured membranes is also another way to
check the vehicle emissions. In this method single gas separation experiments were carried out
using silica modified membranes to study the behavior of individual gas permeation at different
pressures and temperatures.
1. Working of nanostructures membranes in capturing CO2 emission.
Design and fabrication of porous membranes comprises of many layers of different materials
namely: Aluminium Oxide (Al2O3), Titanium Oxide (TiO2), Zirconium Oxide (ZrO2), Silicon
Dioxide (SiO2), Silicon Carbide, Zeolite, or a mixture of two materials applied on an underlying
porous stainless steel. The manner in which gas molecules flow is generally influenced by three
factors: The gas properties, morphology of the membrane and the material used for membrane
design. The technology is environment friendly, quite economical and efficient. It is applicable to
all forms of CO2 removal from other gases. Nanotechnology is being greatly used in this method
of carbon capture. Since 2003 vehicles have been built with on board communications network
protocol called CAN (Controlled Area Network).CANbus is basically a bridge between the
different modules and how they communicate with each other via the serial data

The Causes And Consequences Of The Media
Catalonia was an interesting news story to cover, particularly because of its European
implications. The Guardian newspaper, Sky News channel and Aljazeera.com are three distinct
platforms I selected to monitor. This is mainly because of their reputation and political
dissimilarities. These UK based media platforms were expected, in such a case of Catalonia, to
report this story in depth. My analysis of the coverage will follow the chronological order of these
platforms, which is the same historical appearance of newspapers, television and Internet. This may
also facilitate how we understand the strengths and weaknesses of each medium in covering this
Spanish crisis. The Guardian is centre left and favoured among Labour Party... Show more content

Even the space for his speech was very short (4th October). On the other hand, the Guardian
included a picture of a pro Spain rally in Barcelona and quoted from Spanish leaders. Bias, if it
was so, can be also seen in attributing ordinary Catalan people, which were divided over
independence. Even when the correspondents quoted what a pro Spain thinks in page 4 (2nd
October), it was a woman that changed her position to support the independence because she
was pulled out by the police. Sky News , which is described as a pro conservative according to
the media blog (2010), treated the event quite differently. For instance, the report in Sky News at
10 (2nd October) included a sound bite of a pro Spain Catalan to balance the news story. This may
reflect impartiality in this outlet coverage, but it is not easy to say so. In this report and others, the
correspondents insisted on the division of Catalans, which The Guardian ignored in the
background. The report reminded the viewers that although the Catalan authorities declared that
90% of voters supported the independence, only 40% voted in that referendum. This statement of
an interesting fact can communicate the story clearly to the audience. The focus of reports was on
protests and police violence; however, the Correspondent s report from Barcelona in Sky News at
11 (3rd October) included a sound bite of the Spanish king speech. Although

My Pre-Writing Process Analysis
My usual method for writing an essay made it hard for me to start and actually continue into
writing it. I would first start out and open a word document; Then, I would try and figure out
how I was going to write the entire paper in my head, which made it really difficult sometimes.
Starting the essay was definitely my worst enemy because I didn t know what to start with or how
to go about most papers. My method has changed since this class. I always knew what an outline
was but now I have implemented it into my pre writing. Before, I write I try to make an outline of
all of the topics that will go into the essay. After, the outline is finished, the biggest lesson I ve

It was also one of the most fun essays because I got to try to write a poem. I have never really

wanted my poem to rhyme. It took me thirty minutes to come up with about ten short lines for a
poem. It was a long time to think about the rhymes I was going to use but it was challenging and
fun for me. The easiest essay I wrote in this class was also very enjoyable. It was my essay about
the golf tournament I went to. I included sensory details into it and hoped to bring people s
attention to my writing through it. I enjoyed the essay a lot because it was a true story on a great
experience I had in a golf tournament. The activities that assisted me in preparing for each essay
were simply an outline. Although, I m not sure if randomly typing to start an essay would qualify
for an activity, it helped me a lot. The outline was very helpful for me to understand how my essay
was going to be written. I can t remember what activities that were not helpful because I don t
remember using any other ones other than the

Equine Nutrition
Equine Nutrition The digestive system of the horse consists of a simple stomach, small intestines,
cecum, large and small colons, rectum and anus. The horse s stomach is comparatively small for
its size. The stomach of an average horse has a holding capacity of about two gallons. This may be
the reason horses eat small but frequent meals. From the stomach food moves to the small intestine,
which is the main site of digestion. The small intestine empties into the cecum. The cecum; along
with the large colon; make up the large intestine. Digestion in the large intestine occurs by action

the spinal cord. Moreover, it helps to explain the relationship between thoughts and emotions in
modifying the perception of pain, why actions such as music, imagery, and distraction help to
relieve it. For example, understanding that the gate may be opened by bodily injury, anxiety, and

  • 4. Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), formerly known as dysmorphophobia, is characterized by a preoccupation of one or more perceived defects and or flaws in one s physical appearance. These defects and or flaws are either not observable to others or appear slightly to other s. This disorder is also characterized by repetitive behaviors and mental acts as a response to their beliefs on their personal appearance. These behaviors can include but are not limited to mirror checking, excessive grooming, skin picking, and comparing ones appearance to others. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM 5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013), those with this disorder have concerns on their physical appearance... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, the DSM 5, this disorder also has a high comorbidity rate with major depressive disorder (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Another major clinical feature to this disorder is the repetitive behaviors done to help alleviate the obsessions one is having about their appearance. Some of these behaviors include seeking reassurance about their looks, excessive grooming, mirror checking, comparison to others, and trying to camouflage the perceived defect/flaw. These seem to be the most common behaviors done in association with BDD, however they are not exclusively limited to this as each individual displays the disorder uniquely to their preoccupation. In a study of 33 youths with BDD it was found that 94% camouflaged their defect, 73% sought reassurance from others, and 59% excessively groomed (Carroll et al., 2002). This disorder can become so clinically significant that many youths avoid social situations, have issues regarding school, stop working, and become isolated due to fear of how they think they look to others. On the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) it was found that a mean score of 44.9 45.7 was reported, indicated serious symptoms and impairment (Phillips Rogers, 2011). There has yet to be a direct reason that this disorder develops in adolescents and children, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. What Aspects Of The Museum Provide The Visitor With An... When we say that something is original ... we are referring to the aspect of what can be called authenticity or genuineness, that which is unique not because it is necessarily different in topic or technique, but because it embodies one person s experience with deep particularity. This statement, made by the poet Jane Hirshfield, has provoked a reevaluation of my ideas of an authentic work of art, especially within the museum. Authenticity has some definite, and some more vague definitions. In the following paper, I plan to explore what aspects of the museum provide the visitor with an authentic experience, allowing them to access something authentic. Three institutions will be examined: Winterthur Museum, Garden Library (Winterthur), the Barnes Foundation, and Philadelphia s Magic Gardens (PMG); each institution provides the visitor with a different type of experience, some more authentic than others. I would first like to start by examining Winterthur within the context of the article, The Precession of Simulacra, by Jean Baudrillard. Baudrillard describes different levels and types of simulacra that exist, which I view as a sort of scale between simulation and hyperreality, where the real is something entirely separate. Authenticity falls within this model in the real. Winterthur exists in a state of hyperreality. It is a historic house, which was once the home of Henry Francis du Pont, a collector of American decorative arts. In the 1950s the house was converted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Factors Influencing the Prevelence of Addiction Essay Addiction Everyday we see and hear news articles and reviews that say: I cannot put down Twilight... it s addicting! or I m a Breaking Bad addict! The way the term addiction is used in the media these days, many would overlook its actual significance and the trouble it causes for millions across the globe. Recently, many individuals have referred to addictionas anything that is a compulsive need or habit forming, which could involve everything from substances, like nicotine or alcohol, to activities such as reading a compelling book or getting hooked on a popular television series. Unfortunately, the word has become overused, over diagnosed, and even used as an excuse for one s wrong behavior. Needless to say, addiction is, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The article s authors counter the Choice Model, explaining that a person cannot choose whether to be addicted or not. They outline the path leading to addiction by emphasizing the cause as a physical malfunction in the reward circuitry of the brain. They claim that an addict s abnormalities in his or her reward system causes the addict to achieve the state of euphoria or high by ingesting substances or addictive behaviors. In addition, one s compulsive behaviors and substance abuse can hurt the reward system and result in impaired impulse control and addiction (Matesa and Bickman), so it is a deleterious cycle. Lastly, the article espouses that the Choice Model is in some way blaming the individual and is a setup for relapse (Matesa and Bickman). Viewing addiction as a disease, the ASAM says, will make it easier for addicts to receive help and conquer addiction. Proponents of the Choice Model disagree, explaining that viewing addiction as a disease is more of a self fulfilling prophecy than a way to draw help. Alternatively, the Choice Model counters the belief that addiction is a disease, but rather believes it is all a choice when using substances or taking part in compulsive behaviors. Educator, ex addict, and researcher Steven Slate first compares the Disease Theory to real diseases in his blog, Addiction Is Not A Brain Disease, It Is A Choice. Slate comments that: In a true disease, some part of the body is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Savings Loans Crisis Of The 1980s The Savings Loans crisis of the 1980s produced the biggest collapse of US financial institutions since the Great Depression. It emerged due to volatile interest rate climate in late 1970s when depositors withdrew from these S L institutions in large number and put them in money market funds where they could get higher returns as these money market funds were not under the purview of Regulation Q which restricted the interest these S Ls could offer to their depositors. 1)How did the crisis begin? The business of the S L industry was based on the unstable principle of borrowing short and lending long, so they accepted short term deposits ie their liabilities... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This recapitalization bill was used as a bargaining chip against the Bank Board which had become more rigorous in dealing with these insolvent thrifts. So, recapitalization was postponed and eventually when it was done, it was too little and already too late. Too little because although they allowed recapitalisation but along with that, they put a forbearance clause which precluded the regulators from hastily closing these insolvent firms. And as we know it was this delayed closure of these failed firms which actually inflated the S L crisis. So, the reluctance of congress to confront the real size of the crisis and leniency towards the politically influential thrifts prevented decisive measures from being taken even after the identification of the problem. The FSLIC recapitalisation bill of 1987 had provision for just around $11 billion when the need was probably around $40 billion at that time. • 8. Van Gogh Implied Depth Oil on canvas 29 X 36 1/4 1.Line In van Goh s painting we clearly see how every single brush stroke in his painting mainly consists of soft lines throughout the entire canvas. The sky is depicted with soft lines that curve as they create a soft movement in the sky. The cypress tree consists of vertical and curved lines as the tree rises up into the sky. Van Gogh also used a few vertical/horizontal hard lines to create the spiral church and the rooftops to some of the homes in the village. 2. Implied Depth Van Gogh created depth in his paintingby painting the cypress tree very large as he placed it on the lower left hand side of his painting. Along with the cypress tree, van Gogh painted the spiral church right down the center of the canvas to help him create this desirable depth as he painted the spiral church tiny in comparison to the cypress tree. Another technique van Gogh used to create depth was the technique of overlapping objects to achieve his desirable effect of depth, we can clearly see this as the cypress tree overlaps the hills and the sky full of clouds. 3. Color Van Gogh s use of color in this painting is very simple since he mainly used dark cool colors such as dark blue, dark green, black, along with a hint of light blue, a couple or orange and red dashes, and some white. • 10. United Nations Population Fund And Its Effect On Society... For many people, the most magical day of their life is the day they marry the love of their life. After years of searching for that one special person, you have finally committed yourself to spend the rest of your days on earth growing with that one special someone. Unfortunately marriage isn t always so special. For some, it is a sentence to slavery. Today, one out of every three girls in the developing world is married before the age of eighteen with the largest concentration existing in Southwest Asia ( United Nations Population Fund ). The marrying of young boys and girls, even in cases where it is not forced, can lead to physical abuse and torture, health complications and the termination of any possible future educational endeavors ( International Center for Research on Women , 2006). For the nation of Pakistan, approximately 21 percent of young girls are married before the age of 18, and many of these marriages are forced ( Girls Not Brides ). Although this number is lower than the regional average, the forced marriage problem in Pakistan is highly concentrated in poorer areas, endangering those who are socioeconomically at risk. Furthermore, Pakistan ranks as the sixth most populated country in the world, exemplifying the devastating amount of young girls at risk for forced child marriage. Note that both girls and boys are affected by child marriage, but girls represent the overwhelming majority of those sold into marriage (Ahmad, 2014). Pakistan s Council of Islamic ... Non diegetic sound is also used fittingly in The Tall Man. In interviews, often there is subtle instrumentals playing. When the film is detailing more of the distressing components of this case, suspenseful and tense music is playing. One key scene where non diegetic sound is utilised, is when a picture of Doomadgee is focused slowly zoomed to and in the background the song, (San Francisco) Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair, is playing. It is a member of the alpha hydroxyl family of ingredients which are used in skin care and cosmetic treatments. the glycolic acid is an important part of the light chemical peels, used by the skin specialists to loosen the black heads and also reduce the number of papules which are caused due to acne. Glycolic acid is also used in superficial to moderate chemical peels which are used to remove the acne damaged tissues to allow a new and fresh skin to appear. Effects of glycolic acid acne treatment Glycolic acid can make the skin sensitive than normal. This is why it is best to always test a small area of the skin before you start using the glycolic acid acne treatment on your skin. Glycolic acid exfoliates the skin. The glycolic acid travels deep below the acne blemishes and breaks down the dead skin cells that are clogging the pores. Glycolic acid also has an ability to moisturize your skin after it removes the dead skin cells. This allows the acne prone skin to remain moisturized and prevent drying out and promoting more production of more oil to compensate for the moisture that was lost in the treatment process. Thoreau s love for nature was one of the most powerful aspects evident in Walden. Considered by some to be the father of the environmental movement, Thoreau referred back to nature in everything he wrote from essays to political speeches. As a simple man, Thoreau did not own many material things. For he believed that to own material objects were an obstacle, rather than an advantage. He saw that most people measured self worth in terms of what they owned, rather than their spiritual and intellectual gifts. Thoreau proposed to live as simply as possible and determine what he needed for basic human survival. quot;My greatest skill is to want but little. quot; He grew his own food, cleaned his own cabin, and often arranged his affairs so he had to work as little as possible. Government officials quickly scrambled to calm the mass panic which resulted in the speedy passing of the Patriot Act. The Patriot, or what is more formally known as the Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism act, was established to provide the government with the implements it needed to stop terrorists operating on American soil. While the Patriot Act does have an important goal of obstructing terrorism, it achieves this goal at the expense of our individual liberties given to us by the Constitution. Firstly, the Patriot Act violates the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitutionby allowing the government to conduct secret searches of citizens property undermining the amendment s principle of search and seizure only with a warrant. The Fourth Amendment protects us from searches and seizures without a warrant or probable cause. However, sections of the Patriot Act can be seen undermining this American prerogative. All these services and support remind me of Erikson s first stage of trust versus mistrust. I think HOPE tries to establish trust for the children by making sure their basic needs are met and that they are being cared for. The support provided by HOPE to the caregivers, in my opinion, help facilitate bonds of trust to form. Having a child with developmental delays may be challenging to caregivers, therefore maybe making it hard to form bonds between child and parent. Having the support from HOPE, may alleviate that stress, building a stronger sense of trust between the caregivers and child. • 30. The Themes And Government Of 1984 By George Orwell The topics and themes of which an author chooses to write reveals a lot about their unique perspective of the world. One may be able to read a novel and understand the surface level descriptions of the plot and characters, but it takes a true critical thinker to analyze the symbolism the author may have intended. Many books reflect this, from Lord of the Flies to Moby Dick, and then to George Orwells 1984. The underlying cynicism of Winston Smith s actual name, The Party, and eventually Winston s love of Big Brother, speaks a greater truth than a first glance may reveal. Orwell used this novel as an outlet to speak out about the events around him, thus creating a phenomenon that has stood the test of time for decades. The themes and government of 1984 by George Orwell were influenced by Orwell s personal situation and upbringing, historical events of the 1940s, and reflect the worldwide governments of 2017. While 1984 may send the reader into many different trains of thought as the story progresses, it is very beneficial to track the controversial novel down to the source: Eric Arthur Blair. He was born into a poor household without much of a father figure, and led a mediocre educational career. He often resisted authority and ended up joining the Indian Imperial Police without a college education. In order to carry out this responsibility, a pharmacist has to develop a relationship with the patient. Establishing an interpersonal relationship with patients requires the understanding of three concepts: initiating, sustaining and terminating the interpersonal relationship. When it comes to initial contact with a person, typically the primary objective is to initiate a relationship and get to know the person better. An article written by Marcia Alesan Dawkins titled How it s Done: Using Hitch as a Guide to Uncertainty Reduction Theory, discusses how one can effectively reduce uncertainty when initiating relationships. According to the article, there are three conditions that involve uncertainty reduction. The first is a person s perception of reward and punishment . When individuals encounter somebody for the first time, they typically try to find out whether that person has the potential to reward them by giving a positive experience or whether that person can punish them, giving them a negative experience. The next condition is a person s perceived expected behavior. His steady contact with violent programs (which in the end, show a happy conclusion no matter what happens throughout) may convince him that this type of behavior is normal and accepted. Plato was concerned especially about the influence that drama and even pornography would have on children, because he felt that their minds were not developed to the full extent in order to differentiate between the right and wrong that they see in the dramas. Many people will be quick to agree that a child should not watch a rated R action movie, yet they still allow them to view a Saturday morning cartoon in which the main character gets run over every episode and still comes back the next week. Slipping from his hand, the knife makes a gash, ruining the otherwise perfect pumpkin. When Mr. Pirzada carves the jack o lantern, it is as if he is simulating what it is like to be an average American, something which he is not, by creating a jack o lantern, a quintessential part of American Halloween. When he is reminded of his true identity, of Dacca and of Bangladesh, his otherwise perfect pumpkin becomes blemished. This occurrence represents how one cannot deny their identity, that it is a part of them which affects the way in which they act and the feelings that they feel. For Lillia, a perfect jack o lantern represents an average American, and when a non American screws up the carving process, this shows that one cannot take up an identity which is not their ... • 35. The X Ray Vision Of Superman It s a bird! It s a plane! It s Superman! In 1938, Action Comics #1, released the first Superman comic to the public. Superman, also known as Kal El, has shown many different powers since his first debut in 1938. This paper will discuss various topics about four of his major powers and explain why they are all impossible for anyone to achieve in real life. Supermans four major powers that will be discussed in this paper are X ray vision, being able to fly, super strength, and invulnerability. The X ray was first discovered in 1895 by a German physicist named W.C. Roentgen ( The Discovery ). W.C. Roentgen was working in a lab one day in 1895 and decided to send a high electrical current through a cathode ray filled with special gas. He realized that a dim green colored light was being produced, and decided to hold the cathode ray just above his wife s hand. When he did this he observed that the light was able to penetrate human skin, but would leave all the bones visible. There is a picture below of the X ray of W.C. Roentgen s wife s hand ( The Discovery ). He named it the X ray because he did not know the identity of what kind of ray it was. He just named it X, because of its use in solving unknowns in algebraic equations ( The Discovery ). However, there are some limitations on this Superman power in both the laws of physics and in the laws of the human body. The first restriction is that in an X ray, tiny rays will pass through any atoms that don t have enough mass ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With the coming of the modern age came a rapid influx of ideas; it was a time for revolutions to be made. I d like to start a bit before this time though to see how the shift began. In the premodern era conquering other peoples was very common. In a sense it was conquer, or be conquered. We rationalized that some people had progressed faster than others, and therefore that is why they were able to overtake other communities or nations. These people were civilized and the others savage . This difference in progress was a driving force in developing technologies and ideas to stay above the people it ruled over. To do this, a strong military and economy was needed. The developed nations needed the strongest population to defend, invade, produce, and profit. In addition to this, the ruling class felt that it was not fair to leave their colonies so underdeveloped; so in order to prevent the progression gap from widening it sought to help the poor savages. If at one time slavery had been common in much of the Americas, by the middle of the 19th century it remained only in Brazil, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the southern United States. In an era that celebrated liberty and equality, the slaveholding Southern states appeared backward and repressive. This drew most Northerner s into the abolitionist movement not so much for the behalf of slaves, but how slavery made the United States look. Despite this, the slave economy grew rapidly, enriched by the spectacular increase in cotton cultivation to meet the growing demand of Northern and European textile manufacturers. Southern economic growth, however, was based largely on cultivating more land. The South did not undergo the industrial revolution that was beginning to transform the North; the South remained almost entirely rural. In 1860 there were only five Southern cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants (only one of which, New Orleans, was in the Deep South); less than 10 percent of Southerners lived in towns of at least 2500 people, compared to more than 25 percent of Northerners. The South also increasingly lagged in other indications of modernization, from railroad construction to literacy and public education. For these reasons, many Southerners felt that slavery was all too necessary because their agrarian economy was based around it.
