Military Campaign Research Paper
On March 11, 1862, Lincoln made the decision to remove McClellan as General in Chief, demoting
him to command only the Army of the Potomac. Chief of Staff, Peyton March, sent a telegram to
McClellan in refence to his orders and instructed him to speak first to Governor Dennison.
Suspicious of this message McClellan refused the invitation to Washington or to speak to Dennison.
Later, the General wrote to his wife that the rascals of Washington were after him again and that if
he could come out of this, he would never get himself in this position again. Because of this refusal,
he learned of his demotion via the National Intelligencer, a Washington newspaper. Although many
leaders in the government continued to resent the commander, he was still... Show more content on

With Little Mac once again at the head the Army of the Potomac it moved to stop Lee s invasion
of Maryland After a series of skirmishes along the Blue Ridge Mountains, the two forces met at
Antietam on September 17, 1862. Federal intelligence told McClellan of Lee s plans and the
General took this in to this strategy. McClellan was successful in his defeat of Lee, but the
outcome was the single bloodiest day of the Civil War. Battle weary and bloodied, Lee called for a
time to bury the dead, and the Confederate Army retreated into Virginia under the cover of
darkness. With this retreat, Lincoln expected McClellan to give chase to the Confederate Army and
became frustrated when the General stated that his men needed to rest and refit. In early October,
Lincoln decided to visit McClellan at Antietam to express his frustration at the general s refusal to

Professional Athletes Deserve Every Cent Essay
Many major cities generate hundreds of millions of dollars per year in revenue from ticket and
merchandise sales from the marketability and popularity of their professional athletes. These
athletes play for teams hundreds, even thousands of miles away from their homes and families in
hopes of winning a championship. They spend weeks on end away from parents, wives, and
children. These athletes endure injuries far beyond what the average person would. The most
healthy, fit, and talented athletes are considered lucky if the can play past 35 years of age.

(Allen) These numbers were based on a deal Antonio Freeman made with the Green Bay Packers.
Galloway s case was that he had put up comparable if not better numbers over the previous four
seasons. Galloway, From 1995 1998 has had 261 receptions, 4122 receiving yards, 36 receiving
touchdowns not including 4 punt returns for touchdowns. Freeman s numbers over the same period
of time were 229, 3706, and 36 TD s respectively. (The Topps Company)
With neither side was willing to bend, the Seahawks and Galloway created an awful situation.
The Seahawks were without their best receiver. Each side of this situation stated they wanted to
resolve this matter but nothing was done. Galloway should be commended for sticking to his
game plan. He is arguably one of the top five receivers in the NFL if not the better and should
hold out if he believes he is not being paid a fair market value. But holding out may have backfired
on Galloway.
In Galloway s existing contract there is a clause that states that if Galloway were to hold out the
entire season the Seahawks would have rights to him for 2 more seasons. This means the only
way Galloway can leave after the 1999 season is if the Seahawks were to trade him. Knowing
this, and also seeing how well the team is doing without him through October of 1999. Galloway
elected to come back to the team and end his 102 day holdout. This enables Galloway to become a
free agent at the end of the season and test the market to see

Neofelis Nebulosais Research Paper
There are many regulations and procedures in order to correctly keep animals in captivity; many
of which focus on the safety of the viewing public, the staff involved, and the welfare and safety of
the animals in question. Appropriate enclosure design is critical to all three parties.
Neofelis nebulosais is classed as a dangerous wild animal according to the document produced in
1976. Due to this it is required, by law that the enclosure is suitable and is able to hold the animal
securely; monitored by local authorities. This high level of security is also covered by the Zoo
Licensing Act (1981), but focuses on the welfare of the animals to ensure they are contained in a
suitable environment. It is for this reason that natural trees and shrubs

How Did You Become Politically Conscious And Actively...
Over the last nine years, people have routinely asked, How did you become politically conscious
and actively engaged? It s a fair question. After all, I wasn t raised in a political household, nor
were my parents counterculture radicals or hippies.
For me, conversations with close friends, books, drugs and music were the key factors in shaping
my worldview, morals and politics. In other words, my political consciousness was raised through
social and cultural experiences, both collective and individual.
Growing Up in a Neoliberal World
Born in 1984, I was raised in a neoliberal world. In fact, my generation doesn t recall a time prior
to neoliberalism because we ve never lived in a world without it. Our entire experience has been
colored and shaped by a hyper materialist consumer culture hellbent on privatizing and
commodifying every last inch of the planet.
As kids, we didn t dream of helping our neighbors or volunteering in our local communities, at
least not in the neighborhoods where I grew up; we dreamed of mansions, vacations in the
tropics, fast cars and various other symbols of wealth, not to mention violence, as we were
bombarded with militaristic propaganda in the form of Hollywood films, video games and TV
sitcoms all of which glorified killing and hyper masculinity.
Simultaneously, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, hip hop and alternative rock music were
sweeping the American cultural landscape. For me, these art forms represented a break from the

Berlin Wall Research Paper
On August 13, 1961, the Communist government of Germany began to build a barbed wire and
concrete wall between East and West Berlin. The purpose of the Berlin Wall was to keep the
Western extremist from entering East Germany.
The Partitioning of Berlin
As World War II was ending in 1945, the territories owned by Germany were being divided. Once
it was split, the nation was sectioned into four zones. The east of the country went to the Soviet
Union, while the west went to the Allies. Even though Berlin was located in the Soviet part of the
country, two agreements known as Yalta and Potsdam, split the city into sections.
Crisis in Berlin
The existence of West Berlin, which was thought to be a capitalist city deep within the government
that made the Soviet Union very upset since they were trying to drive the United States, Britain,
and France out of the city. In 1948, the Soviet Union tried to starve the Allies out of West Berlin.

Even with the construction of the Berlin Wall, the flood of refugees did not stop from either side.
Over time, Eastern officials replaced the makeshift wall with one that was much more difficult
to scale. The new wall was reinforced with concrete and had been topped with an massive pipe
that made climbing over nearly impossible. Behind the wall on the Eastern side was a called the
Death Strip. There was soft sand, meant to show footprints and slow them down, trip wire
machine guns, floodlights, well trained dogs, and soldiers with orders to execute any escapees
on sight. At least 170 people were killed trying to get to the other side of the Berlin Wall. Though
it was difficult to escape it was possible, from 1961 to when the wall came down more than 5,000
people managed to cross the border in many ways including, climbing over the barbed wire the
sewers, crawling through, and flying in hot air

Negative Effects Of Video Games
Video games are surrounded by controversy on how they affect the health of those who play
them. Some say that video games do nothing but rot the player s brain. Others say that video
games can do the opposite and sharpen some of the player s senses. Video games can have many
positive effects on the human brain and body. Video games can Improve coordination, improve
problem solving skills, enhances memory, improve attention and concentration, are a great
source of learning, improve the brain s speed, enhances multitasking skills, and improves social
skills. One of the many positive effects of playing video games is that they help improve the
player s coordination. When a someone plays video games they don t just start blankly at a
screen like watching TV. Most video games are full of quick time events, audio cues, and visual
cues that the player has to be ready for. If the player fails to notice these events and cues or reacts
too slow they risk losing the level or making the level harder. Eventually the player will get used
to quick time events and the different cues and will be able to quickly input the correct buttons,
this will lead them to improving their reaction time. The improvement of reaction time will
ultimately improve coordination. Games like Shenmue and God of War are both good examples
for games with quick time events. Shenmue was released in 1999, and was the first game to
incorporate quick time events. Not only was Shenmue was the first to incorporate quick

Essay The Impact of the Vietnam War
For many Americans it is common knowledge to know about the Vietnam War; however, for
some Americans the Vietnam War is ancient history, dishonorable, but irrelevant nonetheless. If
people do not physically see the many horrors of war it is easy to forget; although maybe it is
something we try to forget. However, there are some who may be able to forget there will be
some, like politicians, that will not forget. The Vietnam War had a terrible impact on both the
United States and Vietnam, and more importantly it would affect foreign policy for many years to
come. It is highly debatable for what the reasons were for the Vietnam War beginning but for the
most part the reason was to stop the spread of communism. Communism was on the rise and...

When Rolling Thunder failed to weaken the enemy s will after the first several weeks the
purpose of it began to change. Bombings then tended to be directed at the flow of men and
supplies from the north (Karnow). Damaging as it was to the north, Ho Chi Minh still maintained
the same course. Operation Rolling Thunder was a desperate attempt to convince the North
Vietnamese to initiate negotiations and hopefully a ceasefire. This operation showed that LBJ
was ineffective and ignorant. He was blind to the fact that the North Vietnamese were obviously
going to retaliate because of Operation Rolling Thunder. The TET offensive was the retaliation of
the North. The north surprised attacked many of the cities and therefore making it so that we had
to activate our reserves. It was a political and psychological victory for them (Karnow), because it
dramatically contradicted claims by the United States government that the war was all but over.
This offensive may have been insignificant because it was a failure but it did send an intense
message. Due to the ongoing offensives, controversy over the war raged on. Tensions were not
only rising in Vietnam but they were also rising on American soil. Opposition to the war escalated
as the casualties grew, which created divisions among people of the American society. The United

The New Year Essay
The New Year is upon us once again, ready or not. This holiday seems to me the one that
provokes the most thought and reflection, which is a good thing really. We all need to assess
where we are in our journey of life and make adjustments. For the Christian, this is especially
important. Ephesians 5:1 2 reminds us to Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children
and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and
sacrifice to God. The past year has been a great learning year for me in the area of relationships.
I ve learned a lot about myself, others, and especially about how much God loves ME! Some of
what I learned was very disappointing as I saw so much selfishness in relationships. I know that
I am guilty of it too sometimes, but I just recognized it more, and saw the repercussions many
times. Those consequences are painful and the effects are trickle down. It has made me really
think about Love a lot more and how Love as God intended it to be should be evident in our lives
ALWAYS, and not just when it s convenient for us. God spoke to me about His Love through my
dog, Tracker. Yep, this is the Tracker story that I ve been meaning to put out there. This isn t
exactly how I thought I d convey it to everyone but as time has passed and I think about it even
more, I know without a doubt that the truth that God impressed upon me that night is what is most
important about the story. Tracker is an

Lizzie Borden Essay examples
It is best described by the closing arguments for Lizzie Borden s defense, made by her attorney,
George D. Robinson:
The Lizzie Borden case has mystified and fascinated those interested in crime forover on hundred
years. Very few cases in American history have attracted as much attention as the hatchet murders
of Andrew J. Borden and his wife, Abby Borden. The bloodiness of the acts in an otherwise
respectable late nineteenth century domestic setting is startling. Along with the gruesome nature of
the crimes is the unexpected character of the accused, not a hatchet wielding maniac, but a church

Finding A Correlation Between A Solution s Salt...
Abstract
The purpose of this experiment is to find a correlation between a solution s salt concentration and
its density. The objectives are: First review use of electronic balance. Next learn to calibrate the
glassware. Than learn to use a volumetric flask. After that learn how to determine density. Finally
learn how to calculate percent error. It is known that density equals mass divided by volume which
is a simple formula that gives half of the desired information. The equipment that was used for this
experiment was the Graduated cylinder and the Volumetric flask.
Introduction
The scenario is that you are a chemical engineer for the Podwitz Pharmaceutical Company.
Management of the company has determined there a is a market for off brand contract care
solutions, and has chosen you to an important task in quality control. As you must develop a
procedure that can be used to as a final check of the same saline strength of the product, and the
USP regulations require saline strength to be no more than 5%.
The purpose of this experiment is to measure mass and volume, the main focus of this procedure
is to determine whether there is any correlation between density and concentration of salt in a
solution of water and salt in which the amount of salt is unknown. The purpose is to determine the
best procedure for measuring density. Will the graduated cylinder yield more accurate readings or
will it be the volumetric flask? In this experiment it was decided to proceed by taking

Narrative Style Of Zora Neale Hurston
7 2 Final Project 1 Zora Neale Hurston Zora Neale Hurston was one of the greatest authors in the
Harlem Renaissance era, and it saddened me to discover that she died before seizing the benefits
of her literary work of arts. Ms. Hurston was often criticized for her substantial use of southern
country dialect and folk dialogue; she was a master at creating realistic African American works of
fiction. Hurston s style of narrative is divided into direct and indirect dialogue. In her writing, she
would employ a third person narrative voice that was vastly intelligent with scholarly techniques
such as formal grammar, rich vocabulary, vivid imagery, and allegories to define her settings,
locations, and portrayals. Contrariwise, in the same piece, she would display a narrative voice in
first person and third person using slang language, informal grammar, and irregular speech patterns.
Through Hurston s fictitious creations it enables us to appreciate how significant linguistic choices
are used to enrich the production of contemporary literature and how different dualistic styles of
narrative can work together in depicting the narration within that story. Hurston was a talented
anthropologist with an excellent grasp of storytelling, her realistic artistical writing and deep love
for her community and culture showed with every written word in her literary toolbox. Hurston s
passion for studying human behavior, their beliefs, customs, and humanity has assisted in her

Flamingo Observation
ABSTRACT On September 6th, 2017 period 6 and 8 of research and experimental science went to
Miami Zoo to observe the flamingo exhibit. The flamingos were watched for about 40 minutes all
together. After gathering the data of the flamingos behavior, the information was processed into
two different charts called followed by table and transition frequency table and then turned into a
kinematic diagram. The diagram shows the transition frequency of how many times the flamingo
that was studied produced a behaviorafter another behavior.
INTRODUCTION
The bird that was watched to gather the data was the flamingo (phoenicopterus), a type of wading
bird. At Miami Zoo they have American flamingos (phoenicopterus ruber) . American flamingos
are normally 3 feet and 6 inches. Their wings have bright pink and white feathers and beneath they
have a black coloring, and their beaks match the rest of their body being white, pink, and black.
Compared to the rest of the flamingos they are the tallest.
When we went to Miami Zoo, we watched the flamingos to collect data on their behavior. Five
behavioral patterns were chosen and carefully examined throughout the watch time. A total of 83
behavioral patterns were recorded on flamingo number 25. Everything was then put in several
charts to be made into a kinematic diagram. We did this to analyze the behavior of flamingos in a
certain time frame.

Film Review The film, The Godfather, was released on March 24, 1972. The time period that the
movie was set in was 1945, which was the time period of the Mafia. This film is based around two
families fighting throughout the film. One of the main characters, Michael Corleone, changes

fathers position (Vito Corleone) as Godfather. As a viewer, I did not enjoy this film due to the

Color being one element, was really used in the film helped and played a major role to help the
viewer see the obscurity and wickedness that lied within all of the characters. The colors were
used to also manipulate the way your mood fluctuated throughout the movie. Another strong
element used was the set design. The set was used to show what time period the movie was set
in, but also where the Mafia was mainly located throughout the movie. The dialogue furthermore
showed and helped the viewer really get the feel of where the characters are from, and their

moods of the characters. Also, there are many scenes in the movie that make you anxious and

One way to alert the pharmacist would be via a computerized system that monitors the dispensing of

Also, the computerized system should have parameters set for alerting pharmacy and nursing staff
for all high dosages. When taking cost into consideration, the facility might not have the
feasibility to implement an entire computerized dispensing system that provides dosage alerts and
cross check off of medications. To maintain patient safety with limited funds, the facility should
have remote access to a pediatric pharmacy where all pediatric medications can be cross checked

would provide a safety net for pediatric medication dispensing. In addition to the pharmacy staff
having access to a computerized system, the physician should as well. Had the physician had

The Structural Change Of Silver Nannoparticles
Systematic studies on the structural change of silver nanoparticles, which are easy to change shape
and exhibit excellent localized surface plasmon resonance effect, were carried out and the predicted
shape change was compared to the actual nanoparticles. Herein, key information on the alteration of
silver nanoparticles was determined theoretically by a computational method, discrete dipole
approximation (DDA). The galvanic reaction and sulfidation reaction were suggested to improve
the stability of silver nanoprism (AgNP). In addition, the effect of additionally generated spherical
particles, silver nanosphere (AgNS), on the absorbance was studied. Both AgNP and AgNS formed
hollow nanostructure after the galvanic reaction, and these... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The п¬Ѓrst solution for the scattering and absorption properties of a spherical nanoparticle was
provided by Mie et al. [10,11]. Since the initial development of Mie theory, it is now well known
that the strong optical properties of plasmonic nanoparticles result from an induced coherent
oscillation of the free conduction band electrons within the plasmonic nanoparticle. Thus, in our
previous studies [12,13], bimetallic Au/Ag nanoframes with excellent LSPR feature were prepared
via the galvanic replacement reaction and sulfidation and successfully used as the spectator for
Co2+ ion. However, there is no theoretical interpretation of color changes with structural
transformation of Au/Ag nanoframes from Ag nanoprisms. Therefore, herein, we used a theoretical
approach to determine the key information on the alteration of Ag nanoparticles by using a
computational method, discrete dipole approximation (DDA). It is very adaptive to deal with
various particle shapes, not just limited to highly symmetrical geometries. DDA is used to estimate
the optical properties of plasmonic materials responding to external electrical п¬Ѓeld through dipole
moments of discretized dipoles [14 17]. The absorbance of the particles was calculated by the
Discrete Dipole Scattering (DDSCAT ver. 7.3), which was used to design highly stable
nanoparticles with absorbance in the visible

under the terms of the solitary wage bargain (Class Lecture 1/19/16). Under these new terms, the
women in these jobs were assumed to be ideal workers, meaning that they were given rigid
schedules and paid minimum wage with no benefits. Unfortunately, these low income women had
children to take care of and families to support on their own, so they often sought out public
assistance to make ends meet. However, the welfare to work reform can be considered another
wire in the birdcage because it left many poor minorities lacking the assistance they desperately
needed. Its goal to reduce caseloads afforded caseworkers the ability to discriminate among needy
women based on race (Collins and Mayer 60). Additionally, as Alexander explains, the reformed
welfare program barred individuals with drug related felony convictions from receiving federally
funded assistance, (157). So, when the African Americanmen were out of prison, they couldn t
receive Welfare to help support their children or families. This policy, alongside others, serves to
keep minorities in an inferior racial

Dance Stereotypes
Are you tired of seeing your son sitting on the sofa playing video games, watching TV, or
throwing a ball around? Here s an idea, enroll them in dance. Now, you may be thinking why
dance, Dance is for girls. Right? But, there are multiple reasons why enrolling your son in dance
at a young age could be a great choice. Society is changing everyday and as people of this society
we need to change with it and move past gender stereotypes. Currently, girls are leading the dance
world but this needs to change. As parents you need to stop the stereotypes and let your children
experiment. Your little one could be so talented at dance and you may just never know because
only girls dance. Society as a whole is preventing your kid from doing something they could

Historically, dance has been going on forever with male involvement. Research shows that
during the renaissance times males participating in dance was, nothing but normal. They almost
outshined the females in the system of dance as a whole. But, at a specific time in history the
gender roles of dance changed. It was now up to women to lead the system of dance, bringing
men down to the bottom of the dance chain. Slowly as this change occurred in the system of
dance it became out of place for males to pursue a career in dance and more normal for males to
participate only in sports. Research states Dance study has always been seen as an appropriate
and viable career path for girls, but often not for boys. (Risner) This became the public eyes
perception of male enrollment in dance. The public started just associating the word dance with
girl. Boys that pushed back on the system even when they knew it wasn t the norm were called
names that people don t even use anymore. This was a huge struggle for males. One boy named

How Is Percy Jackson A Archetype Hero In The Lighting Thief
Percy Jackson is a threat because he has stolen Zeus lightning bolt. Percy Jackson in the book
the Lighting thief by Rick Riordan, is a mighty warrior because he possesses the characteristics
such as selflessness, bravery, and perseverance when he goes on a journey to the dead to retrieve
his mother and the lightning bolt. Also, Percy has to face Medusa, a Minotaur, a fury, half
bloods, and the Olympians gods in order to complete his call to adventure. Only a true archetype
hero can manage to complete these tasks. Is Percy a true archetype hero? Percy Jackson had
accomplished many tasks. If it was an ordinary person they would never be able to accomplish
one task. Percy is no ordinary boy on earth. It all started at his birth. Percy had an unusual birth
circumstance, his father is the god of the sea, and his mother is Sally Jackson a human.
According to the text He was kind, Percy, she said. Tall, handsome, and powerful. But gentle,
too. You have his black hair, you know, and his green eyes. This quote explains to Percy how his
Father looks like. Percy was only a baby when his father left. Percy never knew that his Father is
one of the Olympians gods. Another archetype present in The Lightning Thief is the hero s
journey. Percy call to adventure was a field trip to the Greek gallery for his Latin class, Percy was
called over by his pre algebra teacher, Mrs.Doods. When he walked into the room Mrs.Doods

Abstract
In today s IT world every organization has a responsibility to protect the information and sensitive
data they have. Protecting data is not only responsibility of security and IT staff but every individual
is involved in protecting the information. The risks to information security are not digital only, but it
involves technology, people and process that an organization may have. These threats may represent
the problems that are associated to complex and expensive solution, but doing nothing about these

Since 1913, Clorox has had a reputation of leading the industry with its products.
This situational analysis includes industry forces, company statistics and financial information, a
list of environmental factors that deal with how the company operates, and competitor information.
Industry Forces
The Clorox Company does business within the industry of Nondurable Goods; especially relevant
to the product of Disinfecting Wipes, the company is associated with the sub industry of Household
Products. Two significant forces should be considered when examining the industry and individual
companies within this industry: innovation and competition.
Threat of Substitutes and Innovation
The threat of substitutes for the Household Products of the Nondurables Industry is high. As
mentioned before, each company produces a product that is very similar to its competitors.
Customers also have high bargaining power in that they can buy substitute products such as paper
towels and disinfecting sprays. If a company does not spend time and effort marketing its products,
consumers will not be able to differentiate them from a competitor.
The typical household product has a life of approximately five years from the conception of the
product until it is stripped from shelves. The product will go through one to two years of
development, testing, and marketing. It will then

Inventory and Forecast
3. Based on the description in the text and the evidence in the Exhibits 6 and 9, what went
wrong with the SF 6000 forecast? Launching the first 8 megapixel sensor and 10x zoom camera
on the market was a big accomplishment for Leitax. On their official press release, the SF 6000
was named as an a tool for serious photographers . There were huge expectations about the
product and everyone at the company was pretty excited about it. Their biggest challenge was the
forecast for a new product with huge expectations and great reviews. It was no easy task given all
the parts involved were blinded by excitement, and according to their new model of forecast, the
final number should be a consensus between all the interested functions. Leitax... Show more

Ignoring capacity was an issue. By doing that, if maxim capacity was reached, there was a huge
possibility of backordering and that would translate in decrease of velocity, inaccurate planning
and worse: unhappy customer. Capacity should considered into forecast and planning. The CP
should focus on sell in as it is more attractive to the retailers, the product is closer to final
customer so there is improvement on the supply chain, not to mention the costs over the
inventory. Also, the compensation metric for sales used should be the percentage of sell in that
became sell through. This way, Leitax would make sure that they are not boosting the numbers as
they are compensated by the percentage of sell in that became sell through. The company would
have more accurate numbers and it would not incur on permanent inventory costs as they forecast
would be more accurate. CP should not be reviewed monthly basis, but it should be a
intermediate range term and check point every quarterly. On the other hand, sales, marketing and
production should work closely on a weekly, monthly basis to determine the best course of action
to achieve the optimal balance between supply and demand while meeting the expected forecast.
They also should be able to provide an accurate response and predict if anything had changed and
it needed to be reviewed by DMS. that brought formalityformality to the process and a new process

Mcteigue Essay
Guy Fawkes, and Evey. This is a representation of McTeigue presenting a realist style to the
audience through elements and characters within the film through the effective usage of colors.
The usage of costume (with regards to the mis en scene) played an integral role in McTeigue
presenting a realist style to the audience. In the sequence we are presented where Evey works,
we are exposed to an individual who is dressed differently than anyone else. This symbolizes
someone who is different from everyone else (Evey is the only individual wearing a non business
casual outfit; wears a blouse) with regards to her position in her workplace. This eventually
becomes true as Evey s life completely changes when V visits her workplace and makes a broadcast.

The long shots and point of view shots were used so that we can have an idea as to who such
characters are and how their lives are. For example, in the sequence where the ruler of England
is introduced to the audience, the usage of long shots allows us to understand these particular
characters and what they do. In addition, we are able to deduct that these five individuals are to
be considered as top aides to the ruler of England. Even though they possess a sense of authority,
they are still below/under the ruler of England. This was demonstrated through the camera s
angling. In this same sequence the camera angle is at a low angle. This low angle is used to
demonstrate the amount of power the ruler has over these individuals and over the country. The
usage of closeups plays a role in the depiction as to how much power the ruler possesses. Close
ups, when effectively used, can portray power. Because of this sequences frequent use of point of
view shots, the audience is able to relate and to feel the same way the five characters feel during
this sequence (feeling inferior to the ruler of England). This is a representation of McTeigue
effectively using framing to depict a realist style towards viewers by allowing such viewers to
relate to the character(s) and elements within the

Carpe Diem By Mr Keating
Carpe Diem a quote by Mr. Keating, a teacher in the movie Dead Poets Society uses this
philosophy which means Seize the day . The 1989 film takes place in 1959. He thought his
students should use little thought from textbooks and think with their own ideals, in a school
where Tradition, Honor, Discipline, and Excellence are praised. In today s society, this practice
appeals more to parents and colleagues. For parents and Teachers in 1959, Mr. Keating s teaching
style was not approved of. But in today s less traditional society could they view this Carpe Diem
teaching style differently? Mr. Keating s style could be positive and could be negative. Some
prefer a classroom where students can think for themselves rather than follow a textbook.

Erik Erikson s Identity Development Essay
Todd Anderson from DPS develops his identity in a very similar way as Erik Erikson s identity
development theory. Erik Erikson mentioned that identity formation is the most important
developmental task during adolescence (Chen Wu, 2005). He identified eight psychosocial stages.
His identity vs. role confusion stage of development for 12 to 20 years old indicates: Adolescent
must move toward adulthood by making choices about values, vocational goals, etc. (Broderick
Blewitt, 2015). There are four identitystatus: diffusion, moratorium, foreclosure and achievement
which are Erikson s conceptualization of identity development as a task involving exploration of
carious possible positions in the world (Broderick Blewitt, 2015)In the film, Todd Anderson goes
through all three of the four states which are diffusion, moratorium, and achievement as he
develops his identity.
Diffusion is the state that represents young adolescents as they deal with the identity development
process (Broderick Blewitt, 2015). Adolescents in this state lack both exploration and commitment;
they are not looking for any possible life choices (Broderick Blewitt, 2015). At the beginning of the
film, Todd was in the diffusion state. He attends the first assembly meeting with parents but he
shows no passion about anything that is mentioned during the meeting. He is very shy, and he is
not able to hold a conversation with other people without feeling secured. He refuses Neil s
invitation to be part

The Erie Canal Linked Transportation and Trade in the...
The Erie canal was very important to the United States. It was designed to link our nation through
transportation and trade and was the fastest way to transport goods. It also linked many parts of the
country. The Erie Canal was a vital part of Henry Clay s plan known as the American System,
which was designed to link our nation through trade and transportation.
The canal that links the waters of Lake Erie to the west of the Hudson River in the east, is the Erie
Canal. The Erie Canal is an example of Henry Clay s vision to harmonize and balance the country
s agriculture, economy and industries. The building of this canal was first proposed in 1808
and was eventually completed in 1824. At the time, New York State Governor De Witt Clinton
envisioned a canal that would link Albany to Buffalo. The idea was criticized by some and given
the name Clinton s ditch . The idea turned out to be a critical turning point for the country since it
opened up many new possibilities. In the early 19th century the transportation of goods between
the east and west was expensive and time consuming. The normal way of transportation before
the canal, was by horse drawn carriages. Then the bold idea of the Erie Canal was proposed to
ease the tiring commute. The Erie canal was intentionally built to open the country west of the
Appalachian Mountains to settlers. The canal would also provide a safe, cheaper way for produce
to be carried to various markets. The canal then became the fastest way

Summary Of Let There Be Dark By Paul Bogard
In this analysis, we will thematically analyze Paul Bogard s Let There Be Dark , a newspaper
article in the Los Angeles Times published on December 21st 2012. In terms of a purpose, we
must make the distinction between convincing and persuading. In my opinion, Bogard aims to
persuade push for action via emotional appeals his readers of the growing dangers of light
pollution as opposed to natural darkness. After he presents his main argument, Bogard also sets
forth some solutions to the problems to convince the reader that there is still hope. Bogard s
reliance on anecdotes from the past suggests this article is targeted primarily towards adults, as
they are the ones who can most relate with them. Throughout the article, Bogard uses logos, pathos,
and ethos to persuade the reader of his argument. This includes employing vivid language, facts,
logical reasoning, emotional appeals, and anecdotes. We will begin by analyzing how Bogard uses
logos to convey his point.
Bogard first uses logos when he mentions how 8 of 10 children (Bogard line 3) in the United States
will never know true darkness. This suggests that natural darkness is decreasing, thus setting the
premise for Bogard s argument. This statistic is effective because Bogard uses it to set a sharp
contrast between past and present generations. The main argument begins by Bogard referring to
how some major medical institutions, such as the World Health Organization, have acknowledged
the harmful

Evaluation Of A Letter Of Acceptance
It is indicative for consideration to be effective it must also move from the promise. The individual
who desires to implement the contract must display that they provided consideration. In this case
Tobias offered consideration in sending a letter of acceptance. In sending a letter Tobias ensured
acceptance was communicated. When Tobias entered in to a contract it was constructed on the
agreement of a service by M S at the rate of six hours at ВЈ75 (+VAT) an hour per team member to
clean his house when Melinda indicated to Tobias of a new offer at ВЈ100 (+VAT) an hour per

circumstances and methods. The offeror may revoke an offer before it has been accepted and any
counter offer also terminates the original offer. In Carlill v Carbolic Smoke Ball Company, the
revocation must take a form that is similar to the offer. The post rule for revocation is an interesting
take on contract law. Based on the principle which was determined by Byrne v Van Tienhoven,
the revocation must be communicated effectively directly or indirectly to the offeree before
acceptance to be in effect. As Tobias implemented the method by speeder response, same day
delivery to deliver his revocation subsequently the applied postal principle equation can be
deliberated based on it being delivered by the royal mail or by other couriers. Regarding this

Vincent Van Gogh was a man with an immeasurable amount of grit. Vincent Van Gogh used
perseverance, passion, and resilience to overcome the hardship he faced in his life. To begin
with, Vincent Van Gogh used perseverance to overcome obstacles in his life. First, Vincent was
born into a very poor family. Due to this setback, Vincent would use peasants as models for many
of his drawings and paintings. Secondly, would be that Vincent only sold one painting in his
lifetime called The Red Vineyard according to the Van Gogh Gallery. Even though it was a

Thirdly, is that Vincent Van Gogh was a self taught artist with little to no training. Since he taught

Not A Student Loan For College Essay
Abstract
The decision to attend college for most individuals yield promise of advancement in being able to
further one s learning, and assists with developing a marketable educational portfolio from an
institution of reputed academia. However, with the pursuit of obtaining a college degree from a
university, there are augmented concerns with student loans and repayment issues. In electing to
secure a student loan for college, prospective students or parents should realistically, forecast or
measure probable (anticipated) student debt. In particularly, with students aspiring to attend college,
several organizations or subsidiaries, and for profit institutions cash in on unknowledgeable

United States Agency for International Development Essay
United States Agency for International Development
When the Department of Defense awarded Halliburton subsidiaries billions of dollars to rebuild
Iraq in an uncompetitive bidding process, taxpayers and members of Congress alike cried foul.
Liberals at Swarthmore College bemoaned the mixture of domestic business interests with foreign
policy and reconstruction efforts. Initially, foreign companies were formally barred from the
lucrative reconstruction projects. This spring, Halliburton delayed billing the DOD over $140
million under allegations of overcharging for military meals and energy supplies. Where the DOD
controls reconstruction in Iraq, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
controls foreign development ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
American bilateral aid, in the form of outright grants or low interest loans, often comes highly
qualified and redirects wealth back to the United States by design. The United States no longer
keeps track of the level of tied aid, citing statistical difficulties, but USAID reports in 1996
estimated that 71.6% of bilateral aid commitments were tied to the purchase of US goods and
services (ActionAid 1). In 1993, USAID generated seven billion dollars in revenue from purchase
of American goods and services and claimed it has created thousands of jobs...here at home
(Hancock 156). Clearly, the United States reaps a handsome reward from its foreign aid policy. Is
this what we want from a supposed exporter of development expertise and the richest country in the
world?
The two most insidious manifestations of tied aid involve distortions of international markets
distortions which bring direct benefit to the United States. Tied aid often requires purchase of
American goods and services with markups above international prices. Conversely, tied aid can
also involve the sale of goods and services below international prices. Subsidized agricultural
exports belong to this category of foreign aid and were the subject of great debate and fury at this
year s trade talks in Cancun, Mexico.
Aid tied to the sale of expensive American products results in gross inefficiency: goods and
services purchased with tied aid tend to be priced well above their actual market value, with

Metaphors And Figurative Language
Literature Review
Nowadays, metaphor is considered as influential in our everyday life and its traces are not only
evident in the language but also in thought and action. The function of metaphor in language,
culture, and thought has been viewed by various disciplines (Tendahl and Gibbs, 2008). In the
discipline of linguistics, in particular, metaphor and figurative language have long been the subject
of studies from many different perspectives. From a cognitive linguistic perspective, metaphor is a
mental mapping (p. 1825) in the cognitive processes of thinking and reasoning of people in their
everyday life (Tendahl and Gibbs, 2008). As noted by Tendahl and Gibbs (2008), the last century
ended up with its revolutionary studies on metaphor, most significantly in the realm of cognitive
science. They discuss a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We can find several theories in the discipline of Linguistics including relevance theory. Relevance
theory, originally proposed by Sperber and Wilson (1986 1987), is discussed in detail by Tendahl
and Gibbs (2008). According to Tendahl and Gibbs, relevance theory complements cognitive
linguistics in defining metaphor and its functioning. As they point out, in a cognitive linguistic
perspective, people use metaphors in their language because they think metaphorically and different
language configurations are viewed as conceptual processing mechanisms (p. 1825) where an
operation of mapping the concepts in the mind of speakers occurs (Tendahl and Gibbs, 2008). In
their view, relevance theory, both by its encoding and decoding pattern of thoughtcommunication
and by its view at the intended meaning in a certain context of communication, also has a cognitive
look at language and mind, or more specifically at communication and thought. We can clearly see
such cognitive perspective in relevance theory as suggested by Sperber and Wilson

Professional Socialization Process Analysis
I have gotten more than fifteen checks, which means I am a role model of positive action in my
own professional socialization process. Though I did get fifteen, I still missed five, which
means there is still room for improvement. I do have my strengths. I would say my best strengths
is I am self directed, lifelong learner. I constantly want to know more and more. This is seen
because not am I only trying to become a Nurse, but I am also in the ROTC program here at USD.
I love the military and I am learningmore about all the different stuff that goes on with it. Another
strength is that I am realistic about my performance. I realize that to perform well you need to
have hard work, which can be seen on my last semester GPA which I got

The Sound And The Fury Analysis
In The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner the representation of populations with inter family
conflict is expressed through the differing character explanations in their designated sections. The
novel provides an insight to the mind and memory comprehension of different mental capacities;
however, how and why is a social group represented in a particular way? The Sound and the Fury is
divided into four specific sections that are devoted to the minds of four different characters,
specifically Benjamin, Quentin, Jason, and the unknown chapter. The first chapter is Benjamin s
chapter, this chapter is spent mainly shifting from the presenttimeand the past. Faulkner utilized
Benjamin s different mindset to provide the reader with an accurate thought pattern. This constant
shift allows for the reader to connect to Benjamin s understanding and experiences. The second
chapter belongs to Quentin, this chapter gives the insight of Quentin s life experiences and the
causes of his imminent death. Faulkner once again switches from present to past in this chapter;
however, the past memories connect to the ending of his chapter where he ends his life. The third
chapter is from the viewpoint of Jason and all of the problems that he is left with from the actions
of his siblings. The final chapter is neither devoted to just one person or to all problems of the
family, instead the final chapter encapsulates the hardships that the family faces as a whole.

African Slaves During The United States Essay
When black slavery first started in the United States, all the slaves were being imported from
Africa. Slowly overtime slaves were being born in the United States instead of solely being
brought from Africa. The birth rate of the slaves was not high enough to depend on the
reproduction of slaves in the south though. This resulted in a combination of both American
born slaves and African born slaves on plantations. Eventually, there was a division between the
two groups of slaves in the Southern part of the United States. The division was caused as the
American, or creole, slave began to assimilate towards the white culture and the African, or
saltwater, slaves clung to their native culture and religion. As the American slaves moved closer
to the white culture, they began to look upon the African slaves with contempt, found their
African traditions barbarous, and the wants of the two groups of slaves began to look very
different. The first reason for the division between the creole and saltwater slaves is the view the
creole slaves had on the saltwater slaves. The creole slaves viewed the African slaves with
contempt and fear . Charles Lyell and Newbell Puckett wrote that the American slaves looked upon
the African slaves with the same contempt that the whites looked with upon all negroes . This
shows that as the American slaves slowing began to imitate white culture, they began to look down
upon those who did not and viewed themselves above the saltwater slave. Lyell goes

Essay about Symbolism Within the Bell Jar Novel
Sylvia Plath s novel, The Bell Jar , tells a story of a young woman s descent into mental illness.
Esther Greenwood, a 19 year old girl, struggles to find meaning within her life as she sees a
distorted version of the world. In Plath s novel, different elements and themes of symbolism are
used to explain the mental downfall of the book s main character and narrator such as cutting her
off from others, forcing her to delve further into her own mind, and casting an air of negativity
around her. Plath uses images of rotting fig trees and veils of mist to convey the desperation she
feels when confronted with issues of her future. Esther Greenwood feels that she is trapped under a
bell jar, which distorts her view of the world around her.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Three days later, she is found and placed in a mental hospital. First assigned to a rich psychiatrist
named Dr. Gordon, Esther feels harassed by the doctors surrounding her. She feels that they do not
really care about her; in a sense, they don t. After seeing Esther three times, he states that she is
not improving due to the fact that she has not been able to sleep, read, eat, or write in three weeks.
She is moved to his mental asylum, where she suffers through electroshock therapy for the first
time. The procedure is done incorrectly and she is shocked, literally.
Because the method was not implemented correctly, Esther is awake the whole time, feeling the
electricity course through her. As her condition worsens, she is placed in a privately funded asylum.
She once again undergoes electroshock therapy, but this time it is done correctly, lifting the bell jar
off of her. She states that it hangs a few feet above her head. Being under the bell jar is a
terrifying experience for Esther. It renders her useless of her greatest skill, writing. It makes her
hate essentially everyone and everything that had once meant something to her. It turns her into a
hollow shell. She makes an attempt to seem normal and portray the talented girl she has always
been, up until then. How did I know that someday at college, in Europe, somewhere, anywhere the
bell jar, with its stifling distortions, wouldn t descend again (Plath 241)? Even though

Briggs Myers Personality
personaility type The Briggs Myers questionaire put a name to my personality type. Prior to
taking this quiz I would descibe myself as out going or not shy . I didnt know that there was a
specific word that described my strong personality. Learning that the type of personality I held

Keeping the relationship a business relationship helps to keep everyone focused and working on

  • 2. Military Campaign Research Paper On March 11, 1862, Lincoln made the decision to remove McClellan as General in Chief, demoting him to command only the Army of the Potomac. Chief of Staff, Peyton March, sent a telegram to McClellan in refence to his orders and instructed him to speak first to Governor Dennison. Suspicious of this message McClellan refused the invitation to Washington or to speak to Dennison. Later, the General wrote to his wife that the rascals of Washington were after him again and that if he could come out of this, he would never get himself in this position again. Because of this refusal, he learned of his demotion via the National Intelligencer, a Washington newspaper. Although many leaders in the government continued to resent the commander, he was still... Federal intelligence told McClellan of Lee s plans and the General took this in to this strategy. McClellan was successful in his defeat of Lee, but the outcome was the single bloodiest day of the Civil War. Battle weary and bloodied, Lee called for a time to bury the dead, and the Confederate Army retreated into Virginia under the cover of darkness. With this retreat, Lincoln expected McClellan to give chase to the Confederate Army and became frustrated when the General stated that his men needed to rest and refit. These athletes play for teams hundreds, even thousands of miles away from their homes and families in hopes of winning a championship. They spend weeks on end away from parents, wives, and children. Galloway s case was that he had put up comparable if not better numbers over the previous four seasons. Galloway, From 1995 1998 has had 261 receptions, 4122 receiving yards, 36 receiving touchdowns not including 4 punt returns for touchdowns. Freeman s numbers over the same period of time were 229, 3706, and 36 TD s respectively. (The Topps Company) With neither side was willing to bend, the Seahawks and Galloway created an awful situation. The Seahawks were without their best receiver. Each side of this situation stated they wanted to resolve this matter but nothing was done. Galloway should be commended for sticking to his game plan. He is arguably one of the top five receivers in the NFL if not the better and should hold out if he believes he is not being paid a fair market value. But holding out may have backfired on Galloway. In Galloway s existing contract there is a clause that states that if Galloway were to hold out the entire season the Seahawks would have rights to him for 2 more seasons. This means the only way Galloway can leave after the 1999 season is if the Seahawks were to trade him. Knowing this, and also seeing how well the team is doing without him through October of 1999. Galloway elected to come back to the team and end his 102 day holdout. This enables Galloway to become a free agent at the end of the season and test the market to see ... Neofelis Nebulosais Research Paper There are many regulations and procedures in order to correctly keep animals in captivity; many of which focus on the safety of the viewing public, the staff involved, and the welfare and safety of the animals in question. Appropriate enclosure design is critical to all three parties. Neofelis nebulosais is classed as a dangerous wild animal according to the document produced in 1976. Due to this it is required, by law that the enclosure is suitable and is able to hold the animal securely; monitored by local authorities. This high level of security is also covered by the Zoo Licensing Act (1981), but focuses on the welfare of the animals to ensure they are contained in a suitable environment. • 5. How Did You Become Politically Conscious And Actively... Over the last nine years, people have routinely asked, How did you become politically conscious and actively engaged? It s a fair question. After all, I wasn t raised in a political household, nor were my parents counterculture radicals or hippies. For me, conversations with close friends, books, drugs and music were the key factors in shaping my worldview, morals and politics. In other words, my political consciousness was raised through social and cultural experiences, both collective and individual. Growing Up in a Neoliberal World Born in 1984, I was raised in a neoliberal world. In fact, my generation doesn t recall a time prior to neoliberalism because we ve never lived in a world without it. Our entire experience has been colored and shaped by a hyper materialist consumer culture hellbent on privatizing and commodifying every last inch of the planet. As kids, we didn t dream of helping our neighbors or volunteering in our local communities, at least not in the neighborhoods where I grew up; we dreamed of mansions, vacations in the tropics, fast cars and various other symbols of wealth, not to mention violence, as we were bombarded with militaristic propaganda in the form of Hollywood films, video games and TV sitcoms all of which glorified killing and hyper masculinity. Simultaneously, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, hip hop and alternative rock music were sweeping the American cultural landscape. For me, these art forms represented a break from the ... The purpose of the Berlin Wall was to keep the Western extremist from entering East Germany. The Partitioning of Berlin As World War II was ending in 1945, the territories owned by Germany were being divided. Once it was split, the nation was sectioned into four zones. The east of the country went to the Soviet Union, while the west went to the Allies. Even though Berlin was located in the Soviet part of the country, two agreements known as Yalta and Potsdam, split the city into sections. Crisis in Berlin The existence of West Berlin, which was thought to be a capitalist city deep within the government that made the Soviet Union very upset since they were trying to drive the United States, Britain, and France out of the city. • 8. However, there are some who may be able to forget there will be some, like politicians, that will not forget. The Vietnam War had a terrible impact on both the United States and Vietnam, and more importantly it would affect foreign policy for many years to come. Operation Rolling Thunder was a desperate attempt to convince the North Vietnamese to initiate negotiations and hopefully a ceasefire. This operation showed that LBJ was ineffective and ignorant. He was blind to the fact that the North Vietnamese were obviously going to retaliate because of Operation Rolling Thunder. The TET offensive was the retaliation of the North. The north surprised attacked many of the cities and therefore making it so that we had to activate our reserves. • 10. The New Year Essay The New Year is upon us once again, ready or not. This holiday seems to me the one that provokes the most thought and reflection, which is a good thing really. We all need to assess where we are in our journey of life and make adjustments. For the Christian, this is especially important. Ephesians 5:1 2 reminds us to Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. The past year has been a great learning year for me in the area of relationships. I ve learned a lot about myself, others, and especially about how much God loves ME! Some of what I learned was very disappointing as I saw so much selfishness in relationships. I know that I am guilty of it too sometimes, but I just recognized it more, and saw the repercussions many times. Those consequences are painful and the effects are trickle down. It has made me really think about Love a lot more and how Love as God intended it to be should be evident in our lives ALWAYS, and not just when it s convenient for us. God spoke to me about His Love through my dog, Tracker. Yep, this is the Tracker story that I ve been meaning to put out there. This isn t exactly how I thought I d convey it to everyone but as time has passed and I think about it even more, I know without a doubt that the truth that God impressed upon me that night is what is most important about the story. Very few cases in American history have attracted as much attention as the hatchet murders of Andrew J. Borden and his wife, Abby Borden. The bloodiness of the acts in an otherwise respectable late nineteenth century domestic setting is startling. The objectives are: First review use of electronic balance. Next learn to calibrate the glassware. Than learn to use a volumetric flask. After that learn how to determine density. Finally learn how to calculate percent error. It is known that density equals mass divided by volume which is a simple formula that gives half of the desired information. The equipment that was used for this experiment was the Graduated cylinder and the Volumetric flask. Introduction The scenario is that you are a chemical engineer for the Podwitz Pharmaceutical Company. Management of the company has determined there a is a market for off brand contract care solutions, and has chosen you to an important task in quality control. As you must develop a procedure that can be used to as a final check of the same saline strength of the product, and the USP regulations require saline strength to be no more than 5%. The purpose of this experiment is to measure mass and volume, the main focus of this procedure is to determine whether there is any correlation between density and concentration of salt in a solution of water and salt in which the amount of salt is unknown. The purpose is to determine the best procedure for measuring density. Will the graduated cylinder yield more accurate readings or will it be the volumetric flask? • 13. Narrative Style Of Zora Neale Hurston 7 2 Final Project 1 Zora Neale Hurston Zora Neale Hurston was one of the greatest authors in the Harlem Renaissance era, and it saddened me to discover that she died before seizing the benefits of her literary work of arts. Ms. Hurston was often criticized for her substantial use of southern country dialect and folk dialogue; she was a master at creating realistic African American works of fiction. Hurston s style of narrative is divided into direct and indirect dialogue. In her writing, she would employ a third person narrative voice that was vastly intelligent with scholarly techniques such as formal grammar, rich vocabulary, vivid imagery, and allegories to define her settings, locations, and portrayals. Contrariwise, in the same piece, she would display a narrative voice in first person and third person using slang language, informal grammar, and irregular speech patterns. Through Hurston s fictitious creations it enables us to appreciate how significant linguistic choices are used to enrich the production of contemporary literature and how different dualistic styles of narrative can work together in depicting the narration within that story. Hurston was a talented anthropologist with an excellent grasp of storytelling, her realistic artistical writing and deep love for her community and culture showed with every written word in her literary toolbox. The Structural Change Of Silver Nannoparticles Systematic studies on the structural change of silver nanoparticles, which are easy to change shape and exhibit excellent localized surface plasmon resonance effect, were carried out and the predicted shape change was compared to the actual nanoparticles. Herein, key information on the alteration of silver nanoparticles was determined theoretically by a computational method, discrete dipole approximation (DDA). The galvanic reaction and sulfidation reaction were suggested to improve the stability of silver nanoprism (AgNP). In addition, the effect of additionally generated spherical particles, silver nanosphere (AgNS), on the absorbance was studied. Both AgNP and AgNS formed hollow nanostructure after the galvanic reaction, and these... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The п¬Ѓrst solution for the scattering and absorption properties of a spherical nanoparticle was provided by Mie et al. [10,11]. Since the initial development of Mie theory, it is now well known that the strong optical properties of plasmonic nanoparticles result from an induced coherent oscillation of the free conduction band electrons within the plasmonic nanoparticle. Thus, in our previous studies [12,13], bimetallic Au/Ag nanoframes with excellent LSPR feature were prepared via the galvanic replacement reaction and sulfidation and successfully used as the spectator for Co2+ ion. However, there is no theoretical interpretation of color changes with structural transformation of Au/Ag nanoframes from Ag nanoprisms. Therefore, herein, we used a theoretical approach to determine the key information on the alteration of Ag nanoparticles by using a computational method, discrete dipole approximation (DDA). It is very adaptive to deal with various particle shapes, not just limited to highly symmetrical geometries. DDA is used to estimate the optical properties of plasmonic materials responding to external electrical п¬Ѓeld through dipole moments of discretized dipoles [14 17]. The absorbance of the particles was calculated by the Discrete Dipole Scattering (DDSCAT ver. 7.3), which was used to design highly stable nanoparticles with absorbance in the visible ... Iris Marion Young s Birdcage Iris Marion Young in her famous birdcage metaphor depicts how a system of laws, institutions, and practices function as a system in order to restrict the social freedom of minorities (Alexander 184). Drawing from examples in certain sociology novels, I will exhibit how the wires of the birdcage work together to subordinate minorities to the bottom of a racial hierarchy. Furthermore, I will demonstrate why individuals like Dr. Gregorry McGriff feel like they need to go through life at 55 MPH. In the 1980s millions of people in inner city communities, predominantly minorities were left unemployed due to deindustrialization and the outsourcing of manufacturing jobs. As explained in the New Jim Crow The decline in legitimate opportunities among ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Women in the inner cities were forced to join the workforce in order to fill the financial void left by the absent men of the communities (Collins and Mayer 27). However, unlike the factory jobs that paid a living wage and provided benefits to its employees, these service sector jobs were under the terms of the solitary wage bargain (Class Lecture 1/19/16). Under these new terms, the women in these jobs were assumed to be ideal workers, meaning that they were given rigid schedules and paid minimum wage with no benefits. Unfortunately, these low income women had children to take care of and families to support on their own, so they often sought out public assistance to make ends meet. However, the welfare to work reform can be considered another wire in the birdcage because it left many poor minorities lacking the assistance they desperately needed. Its goal to reduce caseloads afforded caseworkers the ability to discriminate among needy women based on race (Collins and Mayer 60). Additionally, as Alexander explains, the reformed welfare program barred individuals with drug related felony convictions from receiving federally funded assistance, (157). So, when the African Americanmen were out of prison, they couldn t receive Welfare to help support their children or families. Historically, dance has been going on forever with male involvement. Research shows that during the renaissance times males participating in dance was, nothing but normal. They almost outshined the females in the system of dance as a whole. But, at a specific time in history the gender roles of dance changed. It was now up to women to lead the system of dance, bringing men down to the bottom of the dance chain. Slowly as this change occurred in the system of dance it became out of place for males to pursue a career in dance and more normal for males to participate only in sports. Research states Dance study has always been seen as an appropriate and viable career path for girls, but often not for boys. (Risner) This became the public eyes perception of male enrollment in dance. The public started just associating the word dance with girl. Boys that pushed back on the system even when they knew it wasn t the norm were called names that people don t even use anymore. This was a huge struggle for males. This situational analysis includes industry forces, company statistics and financial information, a list of environmental factors that deal with how the company operates, and competitor information. Industry Forces The Clorox Company does business within the industry of Nondurable Goods; especially relevant to the product of Disinfecting Wipes, the company is associated with the sub industry of Household Products. Two significant forces should be considered when examining the industry and individual companies within this industry: innovation and competition. Threat of Substitutes and Innovation The threat of substitutes for the Household Products of the Nondurables Industry is high. As mentioned before, each company produces a product that is very similar to its competitors. Customers also have high bargaining power in that they can buy substitute products such as paper towels and disinfecting sprays. If a company does not spend time and effort marketing its products, consumers will not be able to differentiate them from a competitor. By doing that, if maxim capacity was reached, there was a huge possibility of backordering and that would translate in decrease of velocity, inaccurate planning and worse: unhappy customer. Also, the compensation metric for sales used should be the percentage of sell in that became sell through. This way, Leitax would make sure that they are not boosting the numbers as they are compensated by the percentage of sell in that became sell through. This is a representation of McTeigue presenting a realist style to the audience through elements and characters within the film through the effective usage of colors. The usage of costume (with regards to the mis en scene) played an integral role in McTeigue presenting a realist style to the audience. In the sequence we are presented where Evey works, we are exposed to an individual who is dressed differently than anyone else. The long shots and point of view shots were used so that we can have an idea as to who such characters are and how their lives are. For example, in the sequence where the ruler of England is introduced to the audience, the usage of long shots allows us to understand these particular characters and what they do. In addition, we are able to deduct that these five individuals are to be considered as top aides to the ruler of England. Even though they possess a sense of authority, they are still below/under the ruler of England. This was demonstrated through the camera s angling. In this same sequence the camera angle is at a low angle. This low angle is used to demonstrate the amount of power the ruler has over these individuals and over the country. The usage of closeups plays a role in the depiction as to how much power the ruler possesses. Close ups, when effectively used, can portray power. Because of this sequences frequent use of point of view shots, the audience is able to relate and to feel the same way the five characters feel during this sequence (feeling inferior to the ruler of England). The Erie Canal was a vital part of Henry Clay s plan known as the American System, which was designed to link our nation through trade and transportation. The canal that links the waters of Lake Erie to the west of the Hudson River in the east, is the Erie Canal. The Erie Canal is an example of Henry Clay s vision to harmonize and balance the country s agriculture, economy and industries. The building of this canal was first proposed in 1808 and was eventually completed in 1824. At the time, New York State Governor De Witt Clinton envisioned a canal that would link Albany to Buffalo. The idea was criticized by some and given the name Clinton s ditch . The idea turned out to be a critical turning point for the country since it opened up many new possibilities. In the early 19th century the transportation of goods between the east and west was expensive and time consuming. The normal way of transportation before the canal, was by horse drawn carriages. Then the bold idea of the Erie Canal was proposed to ease the tiring commute. The Erie canal was intentionally built to open the country west of the Appalachian Mountains to settlers. In my opinion, Bogard aims to persuade push for action via emotional appeals his readers of the growing dangers of light pollution as opposed to natural darkness. After he presents his main argument, Bogard also sets forth some solutions to the problems to convince the reader that there is still hope. Bogard s reliance on anecdotes from the past suggests this article is targeted primarily towards adults, as they are the ones who can most relate with them. Throughout the article, Bogard uses logos, pathos, and ethos to persuade the reader of his argument. This includes employing vivid language, facts, logical reasoning, emotional appeals, and anecdotes. We will begin by analyzing how Bogard uses logos to convey his point. Bogard first uses logos when he mentions how 8 of 10 children (Bogard line 3) in the United States will never know true darkness. This suggests that natural darkness is decreasing, thus setting the premise for Bogard s argument. This statistic is effective because Bogard uses it to set a sharp contrast between past and present generations. I began to get the feeling like I was about to throw up, but knew that I couldn t stop now. I continued to sprint to the finish, and just as I crossed the finish line I looked to the clock and noticed that I set a new PR. The feeling of happiness that swelled up inside me took me back to the practice on the tuesday of the previous week: That day it was hot as fire... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I have tried to run, but know I m getting a little sore and it s probably alright to walk a mile. Also I don t want to be sore for the meet this weekend. I started to slow down a little bit but then thought No I gotta keep running if not how will I ever run a 5K in under twenty minutes, and if the coach thought we would be sore for the meet he probably wouldn t have made us run this far. So I decided to keep running. I knew that I may be a little more sore tomorrow, but if I was going to accomplish my goals I had to work hard. I kept running, and toward the last mile I began to really feel the burn, but I did push and finished with plenty of time to spare. That practice is what I thought of as i crossed the finish line with a smile on my face. As I headed back to camp still beaming about my time I thought to myself, Wow, hard work does payoff, . This is probably one of the reasons why I love Cross Country. I think the feeling that you get after you accomplish a goal that you have been working towards is one of the best feelings in the world. Cross Country continues to give me this feeling s and has taught me many things about working towards goals, which is why I love it so much and considered one of my favorite ... United States Agency for International Development Essay United States Agency for International Development When the Department of Defense awarded Halliburton subsidiaries billions of dollars to rebuild Iraq in an uncompetitive bidding process, taxpayers and members of Congress alike cried foul. Liberals at Swarthmore College bemoaned the mixture of domestic business interests with foreign policy and reconstruction efforts. Initially, foreign companies were formally barred from the lucrative reconstruction projects. This spring, Halliburton delayed billing the DOD over $140 million under allegations of overcharging for military meals and energy supplies. American bilateral aid, in the form of outright grants or low interest loans, often comes highly qualified and redirects wealth back to the United States by design. The United States no longer keeps track of the level of tied aid, citing statistical difficulties, but USAID reports in 1996 estimated that 71.6% of bilateral aid commitments were tied to the purchase of US goods and services (ActionAid 1). In 1993, USAID generated seven billion dollars in revenue from purchase of American goods and services and claimed it has created thousands of jobs...here at home (Hancock 156). Clearly, the United States reaps a handsome reward from its foreign aid policy. Is this what we want from a supposed exporter of development expertise and the richest country in the world? The two most insidious manifestations of tied aid involve distortions of international markets distortions which bring direct benefit to the United States. Tied aid often requires purchase of American goods and services with markups above international prices. Conversely, tied aid can also involve the sale of goods and services below international prices. Subsidized agricultural exports belong to this category of foreign aid and were the subject of great debate and fury at this year s trade talks in Cancun, Mexico. Aid tied to the sale of expensive American products results in gross inefficiency: goods and services purchased with tied aid tend to be priced well above their actual market value, with ... • 43. Metaphors And Figurative Language Literature Review Nowadays, metaphor is considered as influential in our everyday life and its traces are not only evident in the language but also in thought and action. The function of metaphor in language, culture, and thought has been viewed by various disciplines (Tendahl and Gibbs, 2008). In the discipline of linguistics, in particular, metaphor and figurative language have long been the subject of studies from many different perspectives. From a cognitive linguistic perspective, metaphor is a mental mapping (p. 1825) in the cognitive processes of thinking and reasoning of people in their everyday life (Tendahl and Gibbs, 2008). As noted by Tendahl and Gibbs (2008), the last century ended up with its revolutionary studies on metaphor, most significantly in the realm of cognitive science. They discuss a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We can find several theories in the discipline of Linguistics including relevance theory. Relevance theory, originally proposed by Sperber and Wilson (1986 1987), is discussed in detail by Tendahl and Gibbs (2008). According to Tendahl and Gibbs, relevance theory complements cognitive linguistics in defining metaphor and its functioning. As they point out, in a cognitive linguistic perspective, people use metaphors in their language because they think metaphorically and different language configurations are viewed as conceptual processing mechanisms (p. 1825) where an operation of mapping the concepts in the mind of speakers occurs (Tendahl and Gibbs, 2008). In their view, relevance theory, both by its encoding and decoding pattern of thoughtcommunication and by its view at the intended meaning in a certain context of communication, also has a cognitive look at language and mind, or more specifically at communication and thought. We can clearly see such cognitive perspective in relevance theory as suggested by Sperber and Wilson ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 46. African Slaves During The United States Essay When black slavery first started in the United States, all the slaves were being imported from Africa. Slowly overtime slaves were being born in the United States instead of solely being brought from Africa. The birth rate of the slaves was not high enough to depend on the reproduction of slaves in the south though. This resulted in a combination of both American born slaves and African born slaves on plantations. Eventually, there was a division between the two groups of slaves in the Southern part of the United States. The division was caused as the American, or creole, slave began to assimilate towards the white culture and the African, or saltwater, slaves clung to their native culture and religion. As the American slaves moved closer to the white culture, they began to look upon the African slaves with contempt, found their African traditions barbarous, and the wants of the two groups of slaves began to look very different. The first reason for the division between the creole and saltwater slaves is the view the creole slaves had on the saltwater slaves. The creole slaves viewed the African slaves with contempt and fear . Charles Lyell and Newbell Puckett wrote that the American slaves looked upon the African slaves with the same contempt that the whites looked with upon all negroes . This shows that as the American slaves slowing began to imitate white culture, they began to look down upon those who did not and viewed themselves above the saltwater slave. Lyell goes ...
