unity or wholeness is something that s championed by Donald Judd in Specific Objects and by
Robert Morris in Notes on Sculpture 1 3 , with both presenting wholeness in opposition to part by
part art. In the latter, the complexity lies in the relations of internal, compositional factors, and
therefore the viewer focuses on these. This in turn isolates the work, and the viewer, from
external factors such as time and space. Judd criticises part by part painting for the way in which
the composition is contained by, but otherwise ignores the shape of the canvas. For him, this
meant that the painting did not create an overall sense of unity because the pictorial parts were
