Essay Commentary
Crafting an essay on the subject of "Essay Commentary" poses a unique set of challenges, as it
demands a certain level of self-awareness and introspection. Unlike more straightforward topics,
this task requires delving into the intricacies of one's own writing process, style, and thought
patterns. It's a self-reflective journey that necessitates a critical evaluation of one's choices,
intentions, and the evolution of their writing prowess.
To effectively write an essay commentary about one's own work, individuals must navigate the
fine line between self-praise and constructive criticism. Objectivity becomes a significant hurdle,
as it's challenging to maintain a neutral perspective when discussing personal creations.
Unraveling the layers of thought processes and dissecting the motives behind specific stylistic
choices demand a level of introspection that can be uncomfortable and demanding.
Moreover, the challenge lies in balancing the fine line between being too self-critical and overly
confident. Striking this equilibrium requires a nuanced approach, acknowledging strengths while
addressing areas for improvement. This type of self-analysis demands intellectual honesty and a
willingness to confront shortcomings, making it a complex task that requires both humility and
self-assurance.
Additionally, the essay commentary necessitates a thorough understanding of the writing
context, purpose, and audience. It involves answering questions about the intended impact of
the piece, the effectiveness of the chosen rhetoric, and the alignment of the work with its initial
objectives. This depth of analysis requires a keen awareness of the intricacies of one's own
writing style and its adaptability to different situations.
In conclusion, crafting an essay commentary on one's own work is a challenging undertaking that
requires a delicate balance of self-awareness, objectivity, and the ability to navigate the complex
interplay between self-critique and self-praise. It is a task that demands a profound
understanding of one's writing choices and an openness to growth. As writers embark on this
introspective journey, they may find themselves grappling with the nuances of self-evaluation,
ultimately emerging with a deeper understanding of their craft.

Conserving Biodiversity Conservation And Diversity...
Conservation efforts have been seen by many people as a blockade to the human
agenda of technological expansion and population growth. Conserving biodiversity
and ecosystems may only be acknowledged once the benefits to humans are outlined
and are usually seen as a win win situation. However, the concern isn t enough to
bring the whole population s attention to the problem of biodiversityloss.
Additionally, many countries don t have the resources or the money to invest in
conservation efforts, which is why countries that can implement conservation policy
should. Conservation should be helpful to everyone, ecosystems and organisms
included. Chan et al. (2007) discusses ecosystemservices, the problem with win win
situations, and cost benefit analyses. The first ecosystem service is the production of
goods, such as food, wood, coal, and oil. These are important to humans for
transportation, nutrients and energy, and constructing buildings. The second
ecosystem service is categorized as things we can t survive without, such as water
purification and pollinators. One of the reasons why these are important to humans is
because without pollinators we wouldn t have many of the foods that we harvest
today. The third is life fulfilling processes, such as enjoying recreational outdoor
activities, and inspiration for the arts and sciences. Activities, such as these, promote
human appreciation of the environment. The final ecosystem service is the potential
for future options that

Comparison of Madness and Sanity in Hamlet and Death of a Salesman Could
anyone really determine whether or not a person is mad or sane?
In William Shakespeare s Hamlet and Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman each of
their two main characters, Hamlet and Wily Loman, are put up to this question, but in
each situation their so called madness differs in the cause of them. The ways in which
their madness affects their lives is proven by three actions. These actions are
neglecting their responsibilities, negatively influencing others, and finally distracting
themselves.
It is really never determined whether or not Hamlet and Willy are really mad, but
there is some good details that reflect it. Both characters were once ... Show more

He doesn t even realize that he is jeopardizing his life by not paying attention. Also
Willy wants so much more, but he doesn t even try to make it better. He escapes
like a coward from the present which is the easy way out. With once being in
control and now losing it along with their priorities, it is safe to determine that there
is a bit of madness in them both. As a result of neglecting their responsibilities, they
negatively influence others around them in an indirect way. Hamlet was a nice young
man who was in love at one point. Now by letting everything such as mother s
incestuous relationship with Uncle Claudius and his father s death get to him, he turns
against everyone and becomes a loner. In the first scene he is shown, he is apart
from the crowd. Also once he worshipped his love
Ophelia and now he treats her as if she does not exist. As a result of this bad
treatment, Ophelia goes mad. Here s where all the trouble begins. Because of her
madness, she dies by drowning, but whether or not it is suicide is left up to the reader.
After her suicide, everything comes tumbling down. This begins the downfall of
Hamlet. If he didn t treat her so badly she would not have died and therefore other
deaths would have been avoided. Willy also neglects the ones he loves. He neglects
their feelings, thoughts and also physically neglects them. Happy, his son, lacks a
relationship with his
Comparison Between A Raisin In The Sun And The
American Dream
An American Dream is happy and successful, wanting to make something of
yourself, or the idea that your children will do better than yourself. The two plays
read that are built upon an American Dream are A Raisin in the Sun and A Streetcar
Named Desire. A Raisin in the Sun is a play set in Chicago some time between now
and WWII. The play focuses on a small family, the Youngers, who are living
together each with their own American Dream. In A Raisin in the Sun Mama s
American Dream is fulfilled. In act one scene one of A Raisin in the Sun, the
audience finds out that Mama s husband has recently died and the life insurance
check will be delivered in a short time. Walter wants to use the money from the
insurance to by a bar, but the money belongs to Mama. In order for Walter to figure
out how Mama is going to spend the money he has his wife Ruth sit down and ask
Mama. Mama tells Ruth
I ain t rightly decided. Some of it got to be put away for Beneatha and her schooling
and ain t nothing going to touch that part of it. Nothing. Been thinking that we
maybe could meet the notes on a little two story somewhere, with a yard where
Travis could play in the summertime, if we use part of the insurance as a down
payment and everyone kind of pitch in.
Mama continues on with the idea of getting the family out of the small apartment and
getting a bigger place for her, Walter, Beneatha, Travis, Ruth and the baby on the way.
Just one day after telling Ruth that Mama wants to get a
Research Paper On Emperor Penguin
Emperor penguins are known to be the largest of all penguins, an average bird stands
45 inches tall. The emperor penguins are slow and dignified, it s a beautiful bird with
a blue grey back that shades into a black tail, and a characteristically white belly
flushed with yellow. Penguins interact with humans in a interesting but different way.
The Emperor penguins are near the top of the Southern Ocean s food chain. Their
varied menu changes with the season, some prey items are more important than
others. An adult emperor penguineats 2 3 kilograms each day. When they need to be
fatten up before or at the start of the breeding season, they can eat as much as 6
kilograms per day. Before returning to the colony breeding penguins have to fill up
to feed their baby chicks, and the colonies are... Show more content on

These type of penguins don t have any symbiotic relationships with any organisms
since they are the largest of all penguins and live in the coldest climate on earth.
When resources become limited, organisms must compete for those organisms. Intra
specific competition occurs between emperor penguin species, when they compete for
nesting areas. This event gets intense because members of the same species share the
same resources.
Emperor Penguins are basically endangered species because the majority of
colonies will have lost half of their populations by the end of the century. Every
few minutes, emperor penguins leap out of the water when they are seeking for
food. They are preyed on by seals and other animals, where they become vulnerable
when entering and exiting water at the beginning and end of breeding seasons. The
Emperor penguins mainly feed on fish, squid and krill. They search for their meals
in the open sea or in the gaps in the sea ice. Like other penguins, they are expert
swimmers, usually spending two and half to nine minutes underwater while diving to
depths of more than 400
Kazakhstan And The Soviet Republic
Kazakhstan Kazakhstan was first occupied by a variety of Turkic and Mongolian
nomads during the 13th century. These people almost never united until the 18th
century when the area was conquered by Russia. The nation later went on to become
a part of the Soviet Republic in 1936. Kazakhstan although a part of the Soviet
Republic, was never densely populated until the Virgin Lands program which
encouraged Russians to move to Kazakhstan. This led the foreigners to outnumber the
natives which altered native cultures and traditions greatly. In 1991 the nation along
with 13 others gained independence. Nursultan Nazarbayevwon the first ever election

Kazakhstan is located in central Asia to the Northwest of China stretching slightly
past the Urals in its westernmost locations. The country is roughly four times the size
of Texas and borders the Aral Sea, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Turkmenistan, and
Uzbekistan. The country is the largest land locked nation and boasts a diverse
climate with warm summers and cold winters. The terrain ranges from the Altai
Mountains in the East to plains in western Siberia and from Oases in the north to
desserts in the south. The country has a vast array of petroleum, natural gas, coal,
iron, gold and many other valuable natural resources. However environmentally
radioactive and toxic chemical sites from former defense industry test ranges are
scattered across the nation. Thee pose health concerns to people and animals in these
areas making them unsafe to live in. Industrial pollution became much worse when
the two rivers flowing into the Aral Sea were diverted for irrigation purposes. When
these rivers dried up harmful chemicals were left behind and then swept into dust
storm which spread the pollution across the country.
The government of Kazakhstan is considered a republic however the nation has
always been under the strict authoritarian control of its first president. He gradually

A Minor Contract
In the state of Massachusetts, a minor may enter a contract at their own will, but may
void that contract, therefore any contract with a minor that does not fall under the
exceptions (necessities) is voidable at the minors disclosure. Some necessities can
include, shelter, food.water, clothing. If a minor is taken advantage of, for example,
being told the price of something is more than it really is, a candy bar is 10$ at the
register but $1 on the price tag, the minor may get the difference in relief. The statute
in Massachusetts says that a minor can enter a contract such as a lease, renting an
apartment, or public housing. With housing terms, housing may be considered a
necessity, depending on the minor s status. However Massachusetts courts have not
clearly defined whether they view housing as a necessity. Public housing agencies are
not required to determine whether housing is a necessity when... Show more content

Massachusetts have adopted the mature minor rule , which entails, if a doctor
believes the child is mature enough and able to give consent to medical care and it
is in the best interest to the minor not to notify the minor s parents, the doctor then
may accept the minor s consent.Minors may also consent to their own treatment for
drug addiction , family planning services, or treatment for sexually transmitted

Temptations In Sir Gawain And The Green Knight
In the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Gawain is a guest at Hautdesert
Castle. During his stay at the castle, three separate hunts take place. These hunts also
parallel temptations aimed at Gawain by the wife of the Lord of Hautdesert Castle.
In each hunt scene, a characteristic of the prey of that hunt is personified in Gawain
s defense against the advances of the King s wife.
The first temptation of Gawain is perhaps the most difficult for him to defend. This
temptation corresponds with the hunt scene involving a deer, In terms of the hunt,
the deer is hunted because it is a staple of the diet, or it is something that satisfies a
person. In the same manner, the Lord s wife viewed Gawain as art animal that she
was hunting. She was pursued him on the sole basis of her carnal desire. This, her
first temptation, is totally sexual. She says Do with me as you will: that well
pleases Inc.,/ For I Surrender speedily and sue for grace Which, to my mind, since
I must, is much the best Course (1215 1217 ) She is viewing Gawain much as a
hunter would view a deer. She has no interest in any kind of relationship, and she is
not extensively flirting with him as she does in the next two temptations; she simply
wants sex from him, plain and simple. She is, in a sense, hunting Gawain; hunting in
that she is pursuing Gawain for the sole purpose of making him her trophy. If he falls
prey to this temptation, then she has slain him. In his reaction to the lady, Gawain
acts much

Glorious Revolution Dbq Essay
Although the Glorious Revolution of 1688 could be considered similar to the Age of
Enlightenment because it stressed liberty and rights of citizens and contributed to a
philosophical movement, it was unlike the Enlightenment due to the fact that it did
not emphasis religious tolerance, help form a new intellectual way of thinking,
contribute to individualism, nor support equality or human dignity.
The Glorious Revolution of 1688 was the peaceful overthrow of King James II by
William of Orange. The event was sparked by tensions between Catholics and
Protestants since James II wanted to end Protestantism in England. Protestants looked
to William of Orange to save Protestantism in England. [The tensions] brought people

Since fighting as a result of religious discrimination was evident during this time,
(Catholics wanted to abolish the Protestant religion forever and Protestants wanting
to overthrow a Catholic ruler), religious unrest and a challenging of religious views
are clear during this time period, despite the fact that it was such an important factor
in the Age of Enlightenment. For example, [the people of England] waded through
seas of blood to drown the idol of arbitrary power, (Document 6) implies that the
English have fought and have undemocratic rulers put into place, leading to even
more conflicts.
The Age of Enlightenment was a time of individual thinking and intellectual change,
in which new ideas were put into place to make society better. With the Glorious
Revolution, however, there were no scholarly changes made to society, only changes
that helped to make England a fairer place to live. It is stated [citizens] submitted
themselves to legislators of their own making (Document 5), meaning that people
submit themselves to their rulers for the rulers to make decisions for them, which is
extremely untrue during the Age of

I want my wedding dress to be crГЁme with lots of lace and a vintage type feel as

odds of my husband being that much taller than me that I need to wear heels is
slim to none. Plus, I have never actually worn heels in my life and I do not plan on

lily would look good in there pockets. My bridesmaids will have bouquet s that look

As for attendant gifts, I plan on giving the bridesmaids and the groomsmen some

As for the bridesmaids I m not one of those people who would write on cute little

will probably give them nail polish to match the wedding colors or take them for a
manicure so they all have nice manicured hands with the right colors for the

which I don t necessarily want for the wedding. For everyone who attends the

Tornado Recovery Summary
This summary will cover the lessons learned and any suggestions necessary
concerning the following disaster. On May 22, 2011 a tornado spawned east of the
Missouri Kansas state line from a massive supercell thunderstorm that quickly
escalated into an EF 5 monster. This monster tornado tore a half mile to three
quarter mile wide path of total destruction through Joplin, Missouri claiming 161
lives (Smith Sutter, 2013). The response by the local and state government was
immediate bringing in a combination of public and private sector efforts. Joplin is
one of the few disasters that displayed how recovery efforts should be executed.
Public sectors after the disaster focused mainly on clearing debris and bringing the
community back into normalcy, while the private sector... Show more content on

One key factor that helped in the timely recovery of Joplin was the massive volunteer
sector efforts. There were more than 92,000 registered volunteers that came from the
United States and as far away as Japan to help restore the community (Smith Sutter,
2013). To house all of these volunteers FEMA provided temporary housing units for
the volunteers and displaced victims. Immediately after the tornado, the American
Red Cross set up shelters for the displaced victims and within two weeks of the
disaster they also had a long term recovery committee functioning. Along with the
tremendous response from public, private, and volunteer sectors the social media
network contributed a huge role in coordinating relief. Most notably the local
churches of St. Paul and College Heights utilized Facebook to contact churches
outside of Joplin bringing in faith based organizations from all over the United States
(Smith Sutter, 2013). The most fascinating aspect of Joplin s recovery was the
autonomous nature that the private and public sectors were able to perform under.

Siella Kingdom
1. I believe one of the most important factor that contributed to Silla s unification of
the Three Kingdom is their strength and their allies. Even though the title is Three
Kingdoms, there were several smaller states which included the Kaya and Puyo.
According to page 30 of A History of Korea , the Kaya states were quite wealthy as
they took an active role in commerce and iron production. However, they failed to
become a larger kingdom which made it easier for the Silla to take over. As for
Puyo, they disappeared even earlier. The main three kingdoms were Silla, Koguryo,
and Paekche. On page 28 29, Seth implies that Koguryo was a powerful kingdom
that often took over nearby cities. In 660, the Tang were frustrated by the power of
the Koguryo, and came... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After defeating Paekche, the Tang went after Koguryo and defeated them. They
offered Silla to become a powerful territory of China, but the Silla refused. Instead,
they took over the Chinese controlled land! They were able to defeat the Tang and
gain control of many territories (page 44 45). What made Silla so powerful?
According to page 39, they relied on their social and political systems. Their
systems includes bone rank system, the Hwabaek, and hwarang. They were also
other factors that contributed to the unification of the Three Kingdoms by Silla. On
page 55, Seth states that the political and military structure provided a stable and
effective government, which carried the country s expansion. They also had long
prosperity, strong economic base, and ways to support their huge military. The
geography also played an important part. Koguryo was dealing with wars on the
northwestern and southern boundaries while Paekche s weak spot to Koguryo was
the north. It was also weak against Silla in the south and China from the sea. Silla
was in the southeast corner and had easier boundaries to defeat. It was also out of
reach from direct assault from China (page
Pink Sheet Stocks Case Study
Elucidation of Pink Sheet Stocks Pink sheet stocks and penny stocks are ways of

speculation houses exchanged organizations over the counter for retail customers.
Financial specialists had a wild time looking forward to discover exact offer
approach spreads for these organizations, and notwithstanding when speculators
found a quote, which took by days and weeks. Out of this franticness emerged the
National Quotation Board (NQB). The early organizers of the NQB set out to give a
thorough rundown to over the counter organizations on a week by week premise.
This gave speculators the capacity to discover quotes on a substantial number of
organizations. This week after week distribution was imprinted on pink colored

Random Forest, An Ensemble Learning Algorithm
3. ALGORITHM BASIS 3.1. Random forest The random forest is an ensemble
learning algorithm that combines the ideas of bootstrap aggregating [20] and
random subspace method [21] to construct randomized decision trees with
controlled variation, introduced by Breiman [22]. According to the theory of
random forest algorithm, for a collection of classifiers h1(x), h2(x), . . . , hK(x),
and with the training set at random from sampled random vector Y, X, the margin
function is termed as: (1) where, I(.) represents the indicator function. This margin
function measures the extent to which the fraction of correct classifications
exceeds the fraction of the most voted incorrect classifications. The generalization
error is given as: (2) where, the probability is over the space X, Y. This depends
upon the strength of the individual weak learners in the forest and the correlation
between them. By definition, in random forests, (3) Therefore, the margin function
for a random forest would be: (4) And the expected strength of the classifiers in a
random forest is: (5) The fundamental idea of the random forest is that at each tree
split, a random sample of m features is drawn, and only those m features are
considered for splitting, where m = в€
љN, N being total number of features. For each
tree grown on a bootstrap sample, the out of bag strength is monitored. The forest is
then re defined based on this out of bag strength by de correlating the irrelevant trees.

The United States Department of Education is committed to ensuring that all students
have access to a quality Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
education ( Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math , n.d.). Despite this
commitment, reports indicate a decline in STEM proficiency as well as a lack of
qualified teachers to respond to the deficiency (Holdren, Lander, Varmus, 2009). The
lack of qualified STEM teachers has resulted in critical shortage areas in many
districts across the United States, prompting policy reform allowing alternative
certification pathways to alleviate shortages ( Alternative Routes , n.d.). Even with a
reduction in critical shortage areas, preliminary reports continue to show little or no...

Stewart (2014) also proposes a shift from professional development to professional

science knowledge changing at a faster rate than textbooks are being replaced. While
options such as job embedded professional development is a possible solution to time

Gender Bias In The United States
Throughout the history of the United States, gender bias has been and still is an
immense concern. Women have been at the forefront of such prejudice. For several
centuries, women have battled for equity in their everyday lives, academically, and
professionally. The push for justice has been a slow process, with incremental gains.
Initially, educational experiences for women were limited to a curriculum that would
support and/or reinforce the ideas that women were less superior to males. Women
were identified as the homemakers and their essential duties only entailed domestic
skills. There were several ideas that contributed to the connotation of genderbias of
women. Notions such as educated women were dangerous to society, their mental
and physical well being were at risk if subjected... Show more content on

The differences in the interaction between teachers and their male and female
students are vastly different. Teachers have a tendency to be ignorant of their
contribution to the continual trouble of obtaining gender equity. A teacher should be
studying their students, just as must as a student is required to learn from teachers
lessons. Constant awareness of classroom interactions is fundamental to develop and
model equity that is beneficial to supporting each student s ability to be successful. In
more recent years, our educational system has faced challenges that are leading our
country back into segregation. Single sex education has resurfaced; jeopardizing the
gains our ancestors fought so hard for. A few people believe that the biological make
up between genders is significantly different, that having coeducational classes is
doing more harm than good. Conversely, there is no proven study that supports these
claims; however studies have displayed the exact opposite. Separating genders within
the educational system will only perpetuate and magnify

now we value speed, ease, and low prices. The idea of a brandchanges with time due

Brand awareness is the most important indicator of the consumers knowledge about
a brand. Brand awareness and customer loyalty go hand in hand. Loyalty of a
customer is an emotional attachment to the brand. This attachment is driven by
brand image and brand awareness. Brand awareness and brand image should
develop an affection similar to a friendship. When buying a product for the first
time, brand awareness is key. It is what gets the consumer to purchase that product.
Measuring brand awareness is another key part in relating it to consumer buying
behaviors. Three ways to measure brand awareness are spontaneous brand recall, top
of mind recall, and aided recall. The ways that measure brand awareness are key in
successfully marketing your product. Brand awareness is a starting point for all
customer satisfaction.
Another integral part of understanding your customer, conveying your brand s image,
and trying to retain that customer that shows evidence of brand loyalty is the customer
s buying decision process. There are five steps in this process, to briefly gloss over
these steps, they go as follows: Problem Recognition, Information Search, Evaluation
of Alternatives, Purchase Decision, and Postpurchase behavior. Although these are
decisions that the consumer makes, as a marketer for a company, it is extremely
important to understand the importance of each step of this process in order to
The Ideas About Human Communication

COMM330: Elements of Persuasion
How are the ideas about human communication related to the definition of
persuasion? Persuasion can be very complex to define and/or understand. Essentially
by writing this paper, I am attempting to persuade my professor that I understand
persuasion and how it relates to human communication. People use persuasion every
day whether they realize it or not. It can be negative and attempt to manipulate or
deceive. It can also be positive and come in the form of professional persuaders like
clergy or motivational speakers. In this essay, I will attempt to persuade my readers of
the direct and undeniable connection between human communication and persuasion.
Let s first explore the topic of human communication. There are three essential parts
that make up the human communication model, the sender, the message and the
receiver. All three elements are affected by the surroundings where the
communication is taking place. Outside elements or noise can affect the way the
sender communicates and how the receiver interprets the message. To understand this
process let s explore the ecological model of communication. It asserts that
communication occurs in the intersection of four fundamental constructs:
communication between people (creators and consumers) is mediated by messages
which are created using language within media; consumed from media and
interpreted using language. (Foulger, 2004) The sender delivers the
Essay on Pedophiles and the Criminal Justice System
When one thinks of a young child one thinks of joy, innocence, and being carefree.
Too often than not though that innocence is taken from a young child through sexual
abuse. Studies have shown over and over again that a child who has been sexually
abused carries those scars with them into adulthood, many times affecting adult
relationships. When a person thinks of a child molester they see in their minds the
dirty old man image. This is not the case in most abuse cases. Usually the child
knows the person that is going to harm them. The offenderis usually someone that the

Most psychological research on the personalities of pedophiles consists of only
clinical descriptions and case presentations. Bell and Hall represented the clinical
approaches to the study of the personalities of pedophiles. They analyzed the
dreams of a pedophiles and made suggestions about their characteristics. The
inference from their case report was that pedophiles have a basic character disorder
shown by schizoid and passive traits as well as a severe dread of adult sexuality. (Bell
amp; Hall 1971).
Cohen, Seghorn, and Calmas (1969) described three types of child molesters
derived from their clinical studies. One type had a history of relatively normal
functioning and the incident of molestation appears to reflect a reaction to a severe
threat to their sense of sexual adequacy. Another type had a history of poor social
sexual functioning and is regarded as primitive and immature in terms of social
sexual skills. The last type they found in their study had offenses involving cruel and
vicious assaults on children and the act of molestation is regarded as more
aggressive then sexual. (Mc Creary, 1975)
Harding wrote an article on pedophilia stating that pedophilia is a subcategory of a
larger group of sexual disorders commonly classified as paraphilias. These are defined
as recurrent, intense, aphrodisiac fantasies, sexual urges,

Computers And The Single Computer Platform
Whenever people play on their phones, work on their computers, or are just chilling
out and playing games on the gaming consoles they own they don t ever really think
about what s behind the program, app, or game they are playing. The thought of
what makes them up is never really a big deal and the thought of how much work
went into all those tiny details never crosses their minds. It all just comes together in
this one big program that nobody really gives a second thought about. Whenever I
say that word, programming, someone may think just simply building websites or
even making computer games, while these are correct, there is a completely different
side to it that isn t really as fun. This different side includes learning different... Show

many different languages that can be changed into binary code, what you want it

many, if you are just counting main languages there are at a minimum hundreds
and if counting all of them including the obscure languages then over a thousand.
Some of the more common ones some of you might have heard of them, mentioned

This language will also help with the understanding with many higher level

easier to write for higher leveled programs. It can also make small
The Importance Of Community Service
community service they oblige to do, Few of our programs seem to care about the
relationship between service and the classroom. Until then, the relevance is null it
becomes another assignment, compulsory and at risk of being completed half

on the sincerity of the participants, especially when it comes to mandatory service ,
people suspect if students will keep their genuineness and passion of committing
when volunteering becomes mandatory. On the other side, Requiring community
service or granting credit for it does not cheapen it, nor does it lessen the effect of it,
another student wrote in a counterpoint editorial. It gives students who might not
have otherwise done so the chance to understand the most important lesson they can
learn: that they have power to bettertheir world. (Sparks, 2013)
As for China, people started to become familiar with the concept of Voluntary service
after its first being introduced into China in 1990s, and it concentrates mainly in the
fields of social charity, urgent aids, knowledge popularization and public welfare.
(Luckystar, 2012) As an important element of social service (one of the three
functions of institutions of higher education in China), it s a fundamental form of
college students donation with their manual and mental energy to give back to the
world and fulfill their self value.

The Life of Larry Bird
Many people wish for greatness; Larry Bird worked for it until he achieved it,
particularly in basketball. Basketball has always been a fast paced, exciting game to
watch. The sport has even been nationally televised for decades. The game has
gained special popularity because of its superstars. National Basketball Association
(NBA) superstars are recognized by many as the most recognizable pro athletes.
Larry Bird was one of the most famous stars of the league, and his popularity greatly
increased the publics interest in the league. Larry Bird s fame and basketball success
was brought about by his hard work and competitiveness.
It all began on December 7, 1956, in a rural Indiana town called West Baden; Larry
Bird was born (Borden n. pag.). His family s life in West Baden and French Lick
was anything but glamorous. However, Bird said, I just never realized how poor
we were. Nobody in French Lick was wealthy (Borden n. pag.). This poor
community lifestyle led to his eventual interest in basketball, as he and his brothers
couldn t afford other entertainments. They instead competed against each other in
any sport they could. Larry s brothers helped him improve as a player by beating
him so badly that he wanted to practice his skills in order to beat them (Borden n.
pag.).
As he grew up, Larry began to also excel in high school basketball. He drew a great
amount of interest from his community

Human Intelligence in the Internet Era Nowadays, if a young adult hears a new
terminology, instead of going to a library and looking it up in an encyclopedia as
what his or her parents would have done, he or she will pull out his or her
smartphone and google it. Thanks to Google and all other commercial Internet
companies, we are closer to all kinds of information, both useful and useless, than
any other time in human history. In Nicholas Carr s article Is Google Making Us

benefits him largely as a writer (Carr, 589). While enjoying this positive influence of
the Net, however, he brings up a side effect of the Internet which is hardly ever

Overall, as Carr has suggested, we should be aware of the changes in our reading
and thinking behaviors that the Internet causes, try to keep thinking in the deep
and perceptive way and cherish the ambiguity of our human intelligence. In the
article, Carr expresses his concerns about the Internet, but he is not completely
negative about it or against it; he writes ahead that the Internet has been a godsend
to him as a writer (Carr, 589). What he tries to do is to remind us that there are
another possible perspective and guideline when we judge and criticize the
Internet. After describing all his concerns about the Internet and human
intelligence, Carr writes that maybe he is just a worrywart and there s a
countertendency to expect the worst of every new tool or machine and refers to
the example of Socrates and Squarciafico (Carr, 595). He shows his
acknowledgment of the opportunities the Net brings us and his understanding of the
reasonability of possible disagreement with him. You should be skeptical of my
skepticism, he writes (Carr, 596). He expects us to be skeptical of his argument,
because he wants us to think more about both pros and cons of the Net. He does not
try to deny the Internet or convince us not to use it. Instead, he puts forward the other
side of the case to let us have forethought from a different perspective and to be more
critical when judging the Internet. When we agree on the bright side of the Internet,

The Innovation Of Deep Web Crawlers Essay
The Innovation of Deep Web Crawlers 1604 Task2 70824 ZHANG Qian (Alice)
With the development of software and network technologies, World Wide Web has
infiltrated into aspects in people s life. The understanding of the significance of
information gathering deepens gradually, because the information contains online
user behavior and potential value. As a result, network information mining has
become a core subject and there is a growing need for a tool to help people gather
online information, which is called web crawlers. Traditional web crawlers have
limitations in mining information from the Deep Web that is hidden, which
means the websites could be accessed when users login, forms are submitted.
However, these shortcomings can be solved by deep web crawlers. This paper will
initially explain the innovation of Deep Web crawlers, then states applications and
evaluates of this innovation. The methods for people to record information have
changed, for different tools are invented to simplify and save time, money and
manpower. Bamboo as well as silk were used in Chins to write before paper
appeared. However, both of them have shortcomings for bamboos are heavy and
silk paper is exorbitant. Lin, Salwen, and Anokwa (2003) point out that in the year
105AD, the invention of paper by Cai Lun improves writing condition, thus, manual
record has become the main way to record data. In their findings (Leiner et al.,

Differences Between Bible Myths And Greek Myths
Last week, I have read the GREEK MYTHS and I found there are some similarities
and differences between Bible and Greek myths, even sometimes are similar with
Chinese myths.
After reading the Bible and Greek myths, you will find the biggest difference is that
the number of gods is totally different. In the Bible, they only believe in one God
faithfully; however, people believe in twelve big Gods and other small Gods in
the GREEK MYTHS, such as Zeus, Athene, Poseidon, Apollo, Cupid and so on.
The reason why they have such a difference is that God in the Bible can do
everything and he controlled all the rights by himself, but in Greek all the Gods had
different abilities and do their best in their fields. Another reason is that God s image

Personality inventories and patient interviews have in fact indicated that people
who abuse or depend on drugs tend to be more dependent, antisocial, impulsive,
novelty seeking, and depressive than other people (Coffey et al., 2003; Cox et al.,
2001; Finn et al., 2000). These findings are correlational, however, and do not
clarify whether such personality traits lead to drug use or whether drug use causes
people to be dependent, impulsive, and the like. In an effort to determine
causation, one study measured the personality traits of a large group of
nonalcoholic young men and then kept track of each man s development (Jones,
1971, 1968). Years later, the traits of the men who developed alcohol problems in
middle age were compared with the traits of those who did not. The men who
developed alcohol problems had been more impulsive as teenagers and continued to
be so in middle age, a finding suggesting that impulsive men are indeed more prone
to develop alcohol problems. Similarly, in one laboratory investigation, impulsive
rats those that generally had trouble delaying their rewards were found to drink more
alcohol when offered it than other rats (Poulos et al., 1995). A major weakness of
this line of argument is the wide range of personality traits that have been tied to
substance abuse
The Gilded Age
Preceding the Progressive Era, the Gilded Age showcased a vast number of changes
in the industrial, economic, political, and social aspects of developing America.
These changes, such as the rise of competitive industries, the continuous diverge of
social and economic classes, and government authority, were issues carried into the
early 20th century. Resulting from these issues were those that emerged, causing a
reform movement, the Progressive Era. These leaders included Woodrow Wilson,
incumbent President William Howard Taft, Theodore Roosevelt, and Eugene V. Debs.
These candidates in the Presidential Election of 1912 campaigns were dominated by
the reform efforts. While the candidates had the similar desire to reform the nation,
their plans contrasted in the aspects of the limitations of the government, control over
businesses in accordance with the economy, and civil rights and service for the
people. Aforementioned, the candidates sought to reform the government in the
manner of how it controlled America, nationally and locally. Prior to the developed
political ideas of the candidates, America was flourishing in industrialization with
new industries in the Gilded Age. Major business tycoons and their corporations such
as John D. Rockefeller and the Standard Oil Company became so powerful that they
ultimately began to control the government. This was also because the government
decided to regulate businesses in a laissez faire manner, which means the government

Reflection On Light And How Light Bendss In The
Whitehouse
This following science lab reflection is about light and how it bends while it travels
from one thing to another. Our main goal for this lab was to discover how light
bends. But the problem is that we have to break in and get past laser security in the
Whitehouse. I hypothesised that, if we can bend the lightaround us then we will be
able to get past the laser security. If we shine water at the light then the light will
bend better and we will be able to get past the laser security and into the
Whitehouse. In this lab we used the mediums: air, water, and glass. We also used
prisms, such as a circle, square, and triangle. These materials all helped us figure out,
which was the best to bend the light with. What we did to find these results was
through a computer simulation to test the way the light bends with others objects and
prisms. This is a short summary about what we did and used for this Science Lab.
When conducting this Lab we found many interesting findings. A few findings were
that when the light from the air hit the water the angle of refractiondecreased to 22o
compared to the angle of incident/reflectionof 30o. The opposite occurred when the
light from the water hit the air. The angle of refraction increased drastically to 42o
when still compared at 30o angle of incident/reflection. With the light from air to the
glass, the angle of refraction decreased a lot to 19o with the 30o angle of reflection
/incident. Things I can say after these results are that the

The Australian Invasion
The European invasion of Australia in 1780 impacted upon the lives of all the
Aboriginal people that lived in and around the invaded areas. When Captain Cook
landed in Australia, he declared it as Terra Nullius, and this alone gives a significant
insight as to the mentality of the British and their willingness to acknowledge the
Aboriginal people and the importance that the land played in their daily lives. As the
invaders brought with them their laws, ideals, diseases, livestock and people, the
need for land increased and settlers began to venture outwards from the main
settlements, the frontier broadened and the Aboriginal population began to shrink.

The Europeans were forcing them off their hunting land and sacred areas. They
couldn t compensate for the increasing population of the settlers. Before long, the
Europeans became annoyed with the Aborigines and violence was inevitable.
Some of the Aborigine groups were able to wage successful guerilla war against
the Europeans, but eventually, the lack of technology became their downfall. Other
groups were forced into hiding while others stayed in camps. Since they were force
off their land, they could no longer hunt or gather food for survival. Spirituality for
Aboriginal people is more than the Christian concept of religion or the word

Dreaming is not a dream, but a reality embodying Aboriginal thought or state of mind
where people were one with the land and all that moved upon it. In this worldview
humans and the natural species were all part of the same ongoing life force.
Aborigines believed that the ancestral beings during the creation time performed

obviously derived from the French New Wave, such as for example the jump cut
which is evidently taken from Godard s film. His use of the Godard ian jump cut
seamlessly blends temporally exclusive scenes together, making the passage of time

She wears the same type of cloths, has the same hair do and her rather eccentric
attitude to life also corresponds to that of her French counterpart.
The primary function of the traditional Hong Kong film industry was to churn out
movies aimed at the general public and make sure that they bring in a profit. This is
much like the French film industry was before the emergence of the French New
Wave. However Wai s ChungKing Expresswas clearly not aimed at the masses, but
rather only at the people who have developed a real understanding and appreciation
for the art of film. Godard s A Bout de Souffle was also a film which was made to
rebel against the old style of French cinema and break the conventions of the film
industry. In this way, both of the film directors have something in common with each
other.
Much of Wai s work has included themes of time passing and how every human
emotion, every material object or specifically tinned food expires. This reoccurring
matter isn t simply an accident but it carries a very significant political message. At
the time that Wai made ChungKing Express , Hong Kong was pending to be handed
over from the British democratic powers, to the Chinese communist government.
This period was very turbulent for the Hong Kong people as they were in
anticipation of a great change, but they didn t know whether it would be negative or
positive.
Dulce Et Decorum Est, By Wilfred Owen
Owen s war poetry is a passionate expression of outrage at the horrors of war and
of pity for the young soldiers sacrificed in it. It is dramatic and memorable, whether
describing physical horror, such as in Dulce et Decorum Est or the unseen, mental
torment such as in Disabled . His diverse use of instantly understandable imagery and
technique is what makes him the most memorable of the war poets. His poetryevokes
more from us than simple disgust and sympathy; issues previously unconsidered are
brought to our attention. One of Owen s talents is to convey his complex messages
very proficiently. In Dulce et Decorum EstIf in some smothering dreams you too

The moment when the women s eyes / Passed from him to the strong men is
wonderfully picked out by Owen, the women s embarrassment at staring, and the
man s misery at no longer being seen as a valid person. Though sleep is relief from
his tortuous life in Disabled , sleep becomes a hell for many of the poems. In Dulce
et Decorum Est In all my dreams . . . He plunges at me and in The Sentry the
persistent memories I try not to remember these things now .
The detail in Owen s poetry puts forward his scenes horrifically and memorably.
His poems are suffused with the horror of battle, yet finely structured and
innovative. His bleeding cough a scene unimaginable by us, something only a true
witness would see and puckering foreheads crisp more than frozen to death, Owen
acutely describes the impact on the skin and face. The scene witnessed by Owen is
so detailed we feel familiar to it ourselves. As with the unseen scars, Owen delves
beneath the surface of cover ups and expectations. As in Disabled and S.I.W. , the full
horror behind these unemotional terms is described.
The particular techniques adopted by Owen in his poetry underline his messages.
His use of speech and present tense give his poems urgency and directness. All the
senses are utilised by Owen, a constant input of sound, smell, touch as well as sight
increase the dimensions of his images and overwhelm us as he must have been.

Ophelia As A Feminist Role In Hamlet
William Shakespeare s Hamlet can be read as a feminist play given Ophelia s
experiences within the Danish society. Through Ophelia s interactions with the men
of the play, the audience can see that the male dominated society brings inequality,
distrust, and destruction. As Ophelia interacts with her brother, her father, and Hamlet
, she is completely unable to assert her own independence, and her lack of personal
autonomy eventually drives her to madness. These three men all deny Ophelia s
individuality and desire for self control because they are accustomed to their male
dominated world. However, once Ophelia is driven to madness, she is regarded as
an individual and finally has political and social power. Shakespeare s Hamlet is a
feminist play located within a misogynistic culture that Ophelia struggles to escape.
Ophelia s interactions with the male characters of the play reveal her limited agency.
As Ophelia tells her brother about her relationship with Hamlet, Laertes responds,
For Hamlet, and the trifling of his favor, hold it a fashion and a toy in blood, a violet
in the youth of primy nature, forward, not permanent, sweet, not lasting, the perfume
and suppliance of a minute, no more (1.3.5 10). By instructing Ophelia on how to
behave in her relationship with Hamlet, Laertes implies that he does not trust Ophelia
s judgement and she needs guidance with her personal affairs.
Furthermore, Laertes continues to micromanage Ophelia and Hamlet s
relationship as he warns her to fear Hamlet s actions. Laertes tells Ophelia, Be
wary then; best safety lies in fear (1.3.42). Laertes s repeated attempts to assert his
control over his sister exposes his belief that Ophelia cannot and should not be
trusted with complete power over her life. Although it can be assumed that
Ophelia does not appreciate this lack of control, societal expectations have been
inculcated into her everyday actions, and she is deeply aware of her social roles.
As a result of this awareness, she promises Laertes that she will follow his advice: I
shall the effect of this good lesson keep as watchman to my heart (1.3.44 45). In
order to maintain peace within her society, Ophelia is forced to conform to societal
expectations. However, as
Sleep Deprivation Paper
The mock study research question I have proposed is What is effect of sleep
deprivation on academic test performance? and the hypothesis I have formulated is
Sleep deprivation will produce poorer performance on test scores. I have designed
a study that will consist of two groups. Both groups will have five members of
different age students ranging from first grade to college graduate level and come
from culturally diverse backgrounds, include members from both sexes, and all with
similar academic standing. The control group will be allowed to sleep, the
experimental group will not. Both groups will be of equal mix and representation, in
an effort to remove factors that could affect the study. The act of sleep will be the
independent variable... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The study design created for this research addresses each of these in an ethical
manner. Beneficence and nonmaleficence is upheld by seeking to benefit the
participants, and cause them no harm. In the study, extra precautions are taken to
ensure the safety of the subjects, and as stated transportation is provided to minimize
risk to the individuals that may have been caused by the experiment, and the
informed consent provides full details on what the potential risks to the subject may
be. The second principle of fidelity and responsibility requires researchers to
safeguard the patients trust and be responsible. The informed consent and
confidentiality procedures, the ability to ask questions, and the ability of the subject
to withdraw create a safe environment for the subject to participate, free from harm
and pressure. The third principle of integrity entails committing no fraud; there is no
deception present in the experiment. Fourth is justice, whereby researchers
acknowledge that their research should be made available to all parties, and further
the science; the study fulfills this requirement. Lastly, respect for people s rights and
dignity is conformed to through the use of the informed consent and the
confidentiality procedures in
Freshman Advice
Coming into high school as a freshman scared and not knowing what to do was one
of the many thoughts that were in my mind, but now as a senior that is ready to
graduate in a couple of weeks I wish I could have known a couple of things before
starting my journey till this day. I have some important advice from my past past
experiences to you as a freshman is: Starting a sport to play, Getting involved with
clubs, and Being social. As my first advice for any freshman is to participate in a
sport you would like and would feel comfortable to be a part of. Just like myself, I
joined the football, track and soccer teams my freshman year, but I was not that
good. I just wanted to be a part of a team that taught me many valuable lessons, but

1/ Please read the following text reproduced from Neil Postman s Amusing Ourselves
to Death (New York: Penguin, 1985. 127 128):
The television commercial is the most peculiar and pervasive form of communication
to issue forth from the electric plug. The move away from the use of propositions in
commercial advertising began at the end of the nineteenth century. But it was not
until the 1950 s that the television commercial made linguistic discourse obsolete as
the basis for product decisions. By substituting images for claims, the pictorial
commercial made emotional appeal, not tests of truth, the basis for consumer
decisions. Which of the following is not a plagiarized version of the above?

Bram Stoker s Dracula Compare And Contrast
Dracula is a work of fantasy published by Bram Stoker. Its uncanny success comes
from its capability to play on all inclusive human fears. The novel is a reflection of
the anxieties and fears which troubled his era; the figure of Count Dracula is both a
timeless vision of evil and the incarnation of turn of the century England s strongest
fears. The 1992 movie Bram Stokers Draculais an adaptation of the 1897 book. This
movie is not the traditional monster movie you would expect at first like the book
itself portrays. Alternately, it s a very affectionate and romantic story, illustrating
Dracula as a tormented being with emotions that much like himself can not die. By
comparing Bram Stoker s novelDracula, to the film adaptation, many differences...

But this high point was also the beginning of a decline in British power. The rise of
the United States and European powers such as Germany and Austro Hungary
threatened to unseat Britain as the world s most powerful nation. At the same time
a steady rise in immigration brought unfamiliar races and cultures onto British soil;
in England as in America, the turn of the century saw a sometimes violent reaction
against the foreigner. Dracula, as an immigrant from the easternmost edge of
Europe, represents many of the popular prejudices of outsiders. Both the book and
the movie mention Dracula s history, but the film s history of Dracula is slightly
different than from the book. The flashback in the movie adds to a love story that
occurs between the Count and his wife Elisabeta. Further on in the film Mina
Harker is believed to be the recreation of Dracula s sweetheart. Romance is Dracula
s motive in the film whereas bloodlust was his motive in the book. Dracula being
capable of emotions such as love in the movie make him less terrifying. Dracula
now has a reason for his horror and this reason of love make him seem less of a
monster. Dracula is just seeking to regain his lost love, unlike in the novel where we

Seat Belts Should Be Required
Imagine this, a church bus crashed into a truck the driver and 12 passengers on the
bus died not including the truck driver who died also. But that actually happened in
Concan, Texas. Why? They were all wearing seat belts, the seat belts just prevented
them from evacuating Now that is really sad, this is why I feel there should be no
seat belts on a bus. Seat belts on a bus should not be required because of the expense
they bring and if there is an emergency it would take longer for the person to
evacuate out of the seat belt.
Most buses don t have seat belts because they are expensive. Therefore, Requiring
seat belts on school buses would be one more thing where dollars need to go (

Analysis Of Composition With Tree Trunks
I viewed Fernand LГ©ger s Composition with Tree Trunks (painted in 1933, using
oil paints on canvas) at the Dallas Museum of Art in their permanent collection, on
September 17, 2016. The painting is placed on the second floor, within a collection
of 20th century European art. This work visually yells at passersby, begging them to
look at it as they move up the staircase. One is invited to stand at the entrance of the
level and contemplate this paintings loose form and captivating use of color and line.
LГ©ger utilizes abstract forms (to create ambiguous objects) with organic and
biomorphic shapes, raw lines and blurred colors to fabricate vague relationships
between these shapes, as well as surrealist qualities to showcase his experiments in
art during the Cubist movement. He successfully captures the grab bag essence of
his work by borrowing ideas from Cubism, Suprematism, Surrealism, and
Expressionism and effectively creates a unified and mystical scene that connects
nature and its biological elements with technology and its mechanical elements. In
the painting, I first noticed the central divide in the composition, creating a left
hemisphere and a right hemisphere. The background is a muted grey, with the
subject matter lying on top of an off white backdrop. There is a fluid, black line
outlining this white region, however, toward the left side, the color begins to
transform into brown. On the right side, I saw spindly, dark treebranches over a
layering of lighter
Bilbo Baggins, An Unlikely Hero
Bilbo Baggins, An Unlikely Hero Heroes are made by the path they choose, not the
powers they are graced with (Ashton, 92). Specific characteristics come to mind when
one envisions are hero, such as extraordinary strength and great courage. Heroes most
commonly receive recognition for notable talents and remembered for their
astonishing deeds and accomplishments. For example, Superman possesses
superhuman strength, speed, and the ability to fly, qualities most frequently
associated with heroes. However, not all heroes fit this model. Just a small hobbit
from The Shire, Bilbo Bagginsdoes not possess any great strengths or abilities, and
many would view Bilbo as the antithesis to Superman. In J.R.R Tolkiens, The Hobbit,
Bilbo Baggins portrays an unlikely hero due to his small size and stout
appearance, his cowardly personality, and his tendency to appear as an onus to the
group. However, through his actions of bravery, Bilbo demonstrates that anyone,
no matter what size or shape, can perform heroic deeds. A hero possesses the
mentality of a person of great courage and ability. Most associate heroes with
extraordinary physical strength and special talents and abilities, such as Anglo
Saxon hero, Beowulf. The Hobbit, depicts a well known hobbit from The Shire,
Bilbo Baggins. Located in Middle Earth, the Shire houses a population of hobbits.
One might not associate a hobbit with the physical appearance of a hero because
hobbits represent the antithesis of a hero s
The Uk And Scottish Governments
The UK and Scottish governments are committed to supporting innovation on
sustainable hydrogen energy for pollution free environment. In the UK, this focus on
innovation is managed by different players such as Government, Research
Organisations and Private Enterprises. Many studies have pointed out the need for
this innovation, which in some cases must be radical, with increases of between 2
and 10 times the current level of innovation. The European Union for example,
mentions that it will take between 48 and 60 billion Euros of investment in
innovative technologies to achieve the objectives of decarbonisation and energy
security. Despite the numerous benefits of innovation in sustainable hydrogen energy,
in particular to Spain, it is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This will ascertain the role governments should play and also private entities, and
the most appropriate instruments to foster innovation. Need of Innovation in
Energy Sustainable hydrogen Energy remains fundamental to economic
development and welfare of society. To reach levels similar to those of developed
countries being, many countries will need, and try to, increase their energy
consumption. In addition, there is still a large number of people (more than a
billion, according to estimates from the IEA) without access to advanced forms of
energy, and will also contribute to increased overall consumption when achieved,
hopefully, this access (Agbossou, et al., 2001). Therefore increasingly global
society need more resources to provide this growing demand for sustainable
hydrogen energy services, which collides with the finite nature of fossil energy
resources, now the main source of energy globally, and with the shortage of other
resources needed to produce, transport or consume energy. This lack of resources is
already leading to significant increases in prices, and more, at high price volatility,
with corresponding negative effects on the global economy and in different countries,
depending on their exposure or dependence energy (Meadowcroft, 2009). Moreover,

The Concept Of A Naval Battle
The concept of a naval battle has been around since approximately 1210 B.C.E.
However, it would be several thousands of years before its most important and
revolutionary changes would be brought about. The idea of a submersible ship has
been around since the Revolution, although its success was minimal at best. The first
modern submarinewould be developed in the late 19th century and would be first
used successfully in warfare by the Germans in World War1. It arguably led to the
American s victory over Japan in World War II. Since their development submarines
have paved the way for the evolution of strategy, revolutionary new tactics, as well as
playing a vital role in the nuclear triad, redefining war.
No longer would the Mahanian strategy of a decisive battle be the norm, nor
considered the best way to fight naval battles. With the advent of the submarine,
navies could now look into denying their enemies the sea rather than struggling to
control it (Hughes, n.d.). A contributing aspect of this sea denial is the ability to
greatly extend coastal defense. Coastal defense can not be looked at in a traditional
sense. These ships are not looking to simply defend the coast, but rather are cruising
thousands of miles of shore to sink as much of the enemy fleet as possible, thereby
crippling their ability to attack (Lautenschlager, 1987). Submarines also introduce a
new element to psychological warfare. As stated in Karl Lautenschlager s publication
for International Security,
Fair Use Case Summary
The Fair Use Doctrine
Case Summary Libraries have been transitioning to the digitalization of literature for
preservation and distribution purposes. When a group of libraries gave works to
HathiTrust for digital conversion, tension from the owners of the work began to rise.
The Authors Guild, an organization that has been supporting writers and their rights
since 1912, filed a case against HathiTrust to protect intellectual property. Google
formed HathiTrust, an organization that the libraries loaned books to for the purpose
of digital scanning and creating metadata files (Ford, 2011).
Converting books to a digital format allows the libraries to circulate digital copies
without compensating the owner of the copyright. Consequently, ... Show more

The simplified definition of the Fair Use Doctrine is to give the public the right to
make reasonable uses of the copyrighted material, while protecting the interests of the
copyright owners (Samuelson, 1995). The challenge is how the legal system
measures fair use and particularly in this case, transformative use. Judges consider
four factors for measuring fair use. The first is the purpose of character of the use.
Second is the nature of the copyrighted work. The third is the amount and
substantiality of the portion taken. Finally, the fourth is the effect of the use upon the
potential market (Stanford, 2015). When HathiTrust a Google company, began
digitalizing thousands of books from the public library s and creating metadata, the
copyrighted materials were being duplicated by a for profit company.
Although the company who owns HathiTrust is a for profit company, their intended
use and transformation of the material was not with the intent of profit. Yet one
might have a hard time believing Google would fund such an endeavor if they did
not see an opportunity to make money off the digitalization of the works. From a
legal standpoint, a challenge is how the judges measure the portion taken and the
effect of the use upon the potential market, particularly when this is the first time of
mass digitalization. The Actors Guild lost the case because the courts believed the
transformative factor of digitalizing the library books gave the public new
White Zombie Apocalypse
Anyone paying attention has had the privilege of seeing the rotting, disheveled,
missing limb creature inhabiting society in a sensational way. Dating back thousands
of years, zombies were integrated into American society with [the] depiction of the
zombie from 19th century Haitian voodooism (Crockett, 2016) leading to the zombie
epidemic existing today. The dawn of the dead has reigned from as early as the
1930s and now a spin off concept has emerged. A zombie apocalypse has influenced
modern day media such as movies, TV shows and videogames: reflecting the viewers
worst fears and adapting the generation.
The first recorded zombie film White Zombie (1932) told a tale of a white couple
who had an encounter with a Haitian voodoo master. During these years,
spiritualism was at its highest White Zombie stroke America s worst fear of
voodoo aiming to destroy love. Many films proceeded White Zombie, all carrying
the same infectious fear of witchcraft. It wasn t until the 1940s that zombies no
longer began to reflect the fear of voodoo but of nuclear extinction. What began as a
folklore story developed into a part of American society. The films created during
this time period still carried the fear factor, yet laced ... Show more content on

The portrayal of zombies before this film were not scary in a physical sense but in
what they represented. In Romero s zombie films, he made the dead appear more
alive with more gruesome and violent ways. Throughout the years, writers or
directors stepped up the image of the zombie, each time making them one step
closer to vicious annihilating creatures. Movies such as; World War Z, Pride and
Prejudice and Resident Evil are our modern day Night of the Living Dead. These
movies all share a similar theme, a carnivorous survival of the fittest world. Yet
despite the new movies coming out, the hunger for zombies has been fulfilled by TV
shows and
Precious Case Study
Living life within a dysfunctional family and living within a dysfunctional
community that had little trust in societal protections left Precious without many
normal safeguards that might have prevented some of the years of abuse that she
endured. Awareness of Precious first pregnancy at the age of twelve, her morbid
obesity, her violent outbursts and her inability to read or write were all reasonable
cause to suspect that Precious may have been subjected to abuse, neglect. If a Child
Advocacy Center had been used, certain aspects of Precious maltreatment
experience and outcomes could have been completely different. Regardless of
whether a call had been made to the local Child Advocacy Center, the complex
challenges would most likely remain. But more importantly, Precious having access
to mental health professionals, legal experts and physicians would no doubt have
eased the trauma of the overall experience. With the use of an advocacy center, if
someone had called into the hotline when Precious became pregnant at 12, the
information would have been forwarded to the county where Precious resided. CPS

Gopher Tortoise Hypothesis
Background/Introduction: The gopher tortoise plays a crucial role in many
ecosystems across the United States including places such as Alabama, Mississippi,
South Carolina, Georgia, and Louisiana. Gopher tortoises get their name from the
burrows they dig, similar to gophers, that assist in many processes in the tortoise s
ecosystem. When digging these burrows, tortoises are returning leached nutrients
back to the surface. Also, because these animals graze on vegetation, they become
important components in the spreading of seeds of different plants many animals
feed on. Gopher tortoises also tend to move from burrow to burrow rather quickly,
leaving them vacant, providing other animals homes. These animals include those

to 3p.m. This makes logical sense because this is the time of day where the
tortoises would have the most energy. As presented above, it is clearly shown that
a tremendously less amount of tortoises were found mating during the times of
6a.m. to 10a.m. and 4a.m. to 6p.m. This is most likely because this is when the
sun starts do rise or go down, meaning there is less sunlight and therefore less
energy for the tortoises. Discussion: The data collected in this experiment did
support my hypothesis, as discussed in the results. I believe this evidence is also
enough to be able to support my prediction, but may need more trials and
experiments done by others to further prove and support it. Similar experiments
seemed to show the same results. For example, an experiment discussed in the
Introduction talked about the decrease in the abundance of tortoise burrows which
led to the decline of mating and therefore also a decrease in the amount of tortoises
in the area. Studies like that one could definitely be supported by the findings from

Essay Commentary

  • 1. Essay Commentary Crafting an essay on the subject of "Essay Commentary" poses a unique set of challenges, as it demands a certain level of self-awareness and introspection. Unlike more straightforward topics, this task requires delving into the intricacies of one's own writing process, style, and thought patterns. It's a self-reflective journey that necessitates a critical evaluation of one's choices, intentions, and the evolution of their writing prowess. To effectively write an essay commentary about one's own work, individuals must navigate the fine line between self-praise and constructive criticism. Objectivity becomes a significant hurdle, as it's challenging to maintain a neutral perspective when discussing personal creations. Unraveling the layers of thought processes and dissecting the motives behind specific stylistic choices demand a level of introspection that can be uncomfortable and demanding. Moreover, the challenge lies in balancing the fine line between being too self-critical and overly confident. Striking this equilibrium requires a nuanced approach, acknowledging strengths while addressing areas for improvement. This type of self-analysis demands intellectual honesty and a willingness to confront shortcomings, making it a complex task that requires both humility and self-assurance. Additionally, the essay commentary necessitates a thorough understanding of the writing context, purpose, and audience. It involves answering questions about the intended impact of the piece, the effectiveness of the chosen rhetoric, and the alignment of the work with its initial objectives. This depth of analysis requires a keen awareness of the intricacies of one's own writing style and its adaptability to different situations. In conclusion, crafting an essay commentary on one's own work is a challenging undertaking that requires a delicate balance of self-awareness, objectivity, and the ability to navigate the complex interplay between self-critique and self-praise. It is a task that demands a profound understanding of one's writing choices and an openness to growth. As writers embark on this introspective journey, they may find themselves grappling with the nuances of self-evaluation, ultimately emerging with a deeper understanding of their craft. For those seeking assistance with similar essays or other writing tasks, a variety of resources are available, including online platforms like HelpWriting.net, where a wealth of writing services can be explored and accessed. • 2. Conserving Biodiversity Conservation And Diversity... Conservation efforts have been seen by many people as a blockade to the human agenda of technological expansion and population growth. Conserving biodiversity and ecosystems may only be acknowledged once the benefits to humans are outlined and are usually seen as a win win situation. However, the concern isn t enough to bring the whole population s attention to the problem of biodiversityloss. Additionally, many countries don t have the resources or the money to invest in conservation efforts, which is why countries that can implement conservation policy should. Conservation should be helpful to everyone, ecosystems and organisms included. Chan et al. (2007) discusses ecosystemservices, the problem with win win situations, and cost benefit analyses. The first ecosystem service is the production of goods, such as food, wood, coal, and oil. These are important to humans for transportation, nutrients and energy, and constructing buildings. The second ecosystem service is categorized as things we can t survive without, such as water purification and pollinators. One of the reasons why these are important to humans is because without pollinators we wouldn t have many of the foods that we harvest today. The third is life fulfilling processes, such as enjoying recreational outdoor activities, and inspiration for the arts and sciences. Activities, such as these, promote human appreciation of the environment. The final ecosystem service is the potential for future options that

Comparison of Madness and Sanity in Hamlet and Death of a Salesman Could anyone really determine whether or not a person is mad or sane? In William Shakespeare s Hamlet and Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman each of their two main characters, Hamlet and Wily Loman, are put up to this question, but in each situation their so called madness differs in the cause of them. The ways in which their madness affects their lives is proven by three actions. These actions are neglecting their responsibilities, negatively influencing others, and finally distracting themselves. It is really never determined whether or not Hamlet and Willy are really mad, but there is some good details that reflect it. Both characters were once ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He doesn t even realize that he is jeopardizing his life by not paying attention. Also Willy wants so much more, but he doesn t even try to make it better. He escapes like a coward from the present which is the easy way out. With once being in control and now losing it along with their priorities, it is safe to determine that there is a bit of madness in them both. As a result of neglecting their responsibilities, they negatively influence others around them in an indirect way. Hamlet was a nice young man who was in love at one point. Now by letting everything such as mother s incestuous relationship with Uncle Claudius and his father s death get to him, he turns against everyone and becomes a loner. In the first scene he is shown, he is apart from the crowd. Also once he worshipped his love Ophelia and now he treats her as if she does not exist. As a result of this bad treatment, Ophelia goes mad. Here s where all the trouble begins. Because of her madness, she dies by drowning, but whether or not it is suicide is left up to the reader. After her suicide, everything comes tumbling down. This begins the downfall of Hamlet. If he didn t treat her so badly she would not have died and therefore other deaths would have been avoided. Willy also neglects the ones he loves. He neglects their feelings, thoughts and also physically neglects them. Happy, his son, lacks a relationship with his

Comparison Between A Raisin In The Sun And The American Dream An American Dream is happy and successful, wanting to make something of yourself, or the idea that your children will do better than yourself. The two plays read that are built upon an American Dream are A Raisin in the Sun and A Streetcar Named Desire. A Raisin in the Sun is a play set in Chicago some time between now and WWII. The play focuses on a small family, the Youngers, who are living together each with their own American Dream. In A Raisin in the Sun Mama s American Dream is fulfilled. In act one scene one of A Raisin in the Sun, the audience finds out that Mama s husband has recently died and the life insurance check will be delivered in a short time. Walter wants to use the money from the insurance to by a bar, but the money belongs to Mama. In order for Walter to figure out how Mama is going to spend the money he has his wife Ruth sit down and ask Mama. Mama tells Ruth I ain t rightly decided. Some of it got to be put away for Beneatha and her schooling and ain t nothing going to touch that part of it. Nothing. Been thinking that we maybe could meet the notes on a little two story somewhere, with a yard where Travis could play in the summertime, if we use part of the insurance as a down payment and everyone kind of pitch in. Mama continues on with the idea of getting the family out of the small apartment and getting a bigger place for her, Walter, Beneatha, Travis, Ruth and the baby on the way. Just one day after telling Ruth that Mama wants to get a

These type of penguins don t have any symbiotic relationships with any organisms since they are the largest of all penguins and live in the coldest climate on earth. When resources become limited, organisms must compete for those organisms. Intra specific competition occurs between emperor penguin species, when they compete for nesting areas. This event gets intense because members of the same species share the same resources. Emperor Penguins are basically endangered species because the majority of colonies will have lost half of their populations by the end of the century. Every few minutes, emperor penguins leap out of the water when they are seeking for food. They are preyed on by seals and other animals, where they become vulnerable when entering and exiting water at the beginning and end of breeding seasons. The Emperor penguins mainly feed on fish, squid and krill. They search for their meals in the open sea or in the gaps in the sea ice. Like other penguins, they are expert swimmers, usually spending two and half to nine minutes underwater while diving to depths of more than 400

These people almost never united until the 18th century when the area was conquered by Russia. The nation later went on to become a part of the Soviet Republic in 1936. Kazakhstan although a part of the Soviet Republic, was never densely populated until the Virgin Lands program which encouraged Russians to move to Kazakhstan. A Minor Contract In the state of Massachusetts, a minor may enter a contract at their own will, but may void that contract, therefore any contract with a minor that does not fall under the exceptions (necessities) is voidable at the minors disclosure. Some necessities can include, shelter, food.water, clothing. If a minor is taken advantage of, for example, being told the price of something is more than it really is, a candy bar is 10$ at the register but $1 on the price tag, the minor may get the difference in relief. • 8. Temptations In Sir Gawain And The Green Knight In the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Gawain is a guest at Hautdesert Castle. During his stay at the castle, three separate hunts take place. These hunts also parallel temptations aimed at Gawain by the wife of the Lord of Hautdesert Castle. In each hunt scene, a characteristic of the prey of that hunt is personified in Gawain s defense against the advances of the King s wife. The first temptation of Gawain is perhaps the most difficult for him to defend. This temptation corresponds with the hunt scene involving a deer, In terms of the hunt, the deer is hunted because it is a staple of the diet, or it is something that satisfies a person. In the same manner, the Lord s wife viewed Gawain as art animal that she was hunting. She was pursued him on the sole basis of her carnal desire. This, her first temptation, is totally sexual. She says Do with me as you will: that well pleases Inc.,/ For I Surrender speedily and sue for grace Which, to my mind, since I must, is much the best Course (1215 1217 ) She is viewing Gawain much as a hunter would view a deer. She has no interest in any kind of relationship, and she is not extensively flirting with him as she does in the next two temptations; she simply wants sex from him, plain and simple. She is, in a sense, hunting Gawain; hunting in that she is pursuing Gawain for the sole purpose of making him her trophy. If he falls prey to this temptation, then she has slain him. In his reaction to the lady, Gawain acts much

Glorious Revolution Dbq Essay Although the Glorious Revolution of 1688 could be considered similar to the Age of Enlightenment because it stressed liberty and rights of citizens and contributed to a philosophical movement, it was unlike the Enlightenment due to the fact that it did not emphasis religious tolerance, help form a new intellectual way of thinking, contribute to individualism, nor support equality or human dignity. The Glorious Revolution of 1688 was the peaceful overthrow of King James II by William of Orange. The event was sparked by tensions between Catholics and Protestants since James II wanted to end Protestantism in England. Protestants looked to William of Orange to save Protestantism in England. For example, [the people of England] waded through seas of blood to drown the idol of arbitrary power, (Document 6) implies that the English have fought and have undemocratic rulers put into place, leading to even more conflicts. The Age of Enlightenment was a time of individual thinking and intellectual change, in which new ideas were put into place to make society better. With the Glorious Revolution, however, there were no scholarly changes made to society, only changes that helped to make England a fairer place to live. It is stated [citizens] submitted themselves to legislators of their own making (Document 5), meaning that people submit themselves to their rulers for the rulers to make decisions for them, which is extremely untrue during the Age of

On May 22, 2011 a tornado spawned east of the Missouri Kansas state line from a massive supercell thunderstorm that quickly escalated into an EF 5 monster. This monster tornado tore a half mile to three quarter mile wide path of total destruction through Joplin, Missouri claiming 161 lives (Smith Sutter, 2013). The response by the local and state government was immediate bringing in a combination of public and private sector efforts. There were more than 92,000 registered volunteers that came from the United States and as far away as Japan to help restore the community (Smith Sutter, 2013). To house all of these volunteers FEMA provided temporary housing units for the volunteers and displaced victims. Immediately after the tornado, the American Red Cross set up shelters for the displaced victims and within two weeks of the disaster they also had a long term recovery committee functioning. Along with the tremendous response from public, private, and volunteer sectors the social media network contributed a huge role in coordinating relief. Most notably the local churches of St. Paul and College Heights utilized Facebook to contact churches outside of Joplin bringing in faith based organizations from all over the United States (Smith Sutter, 2013). The most fascinating aspect of Joplin s recovery was the autonomous nature that the private and public sectors were able to perform under. This can be

Even though the title is Three Kingdoms, there were several smaller states which included the Kaya and Puyo. However, they failed to become a larger kingdom which made it easier for the Silla to take over. As for Puyo, they disappeared even earlier. The main three kingdoms were Silla, Koguryo, and Paekche. Random forest The random forest is an ensemble learning algorithm that combines the ideas of bootstrap aggregating [20] and random subspace method [21] to construct randomized decision trees with controlled variation, introduced by Breiman [22]. According to the theory of random forest algorithm, for a collection of classifiers h1(x), h2(x), . . . , hK(x), and with the training set at random from sampled random vector Y, X, the margin function is termed as: (1) where, I(.) represents the indicator function. This margin function measures the extent to which the fraction of correct classifications exceeds the fraction of the most voted incorrect classifications. The generalization error is given as: (2) where, the probability is over the space X, Y. This depends upon the strength of the individual weak learners in the forest and the correlation between them. By definition, in random forests, (3) Therefore, the margin function for a random forest would be: (4) And the expected strength of the classifiers in a random forest is: (5) The fundamental idea of the random forest is that at each tree split, a random sample of m features is drawn, and only those m features are considered for splitting, where m = в€ љN, N being total number of features. For each tree grown on a bootstrap sample, the out of bag strength is monitored. The forest is then re defined based on this out of bag strength by de correlating the irrelevant trees. 3.2.

For several centuries, women have battled for equity in their everyday lives, academically, and professionally. The push for justice has been a slow process, with incremental gains. Initially, educational experiences for women were limited to a curriculum that would support and/or reinforce the ideas that women were less superior to males. It is what gets the consumer to purchase that product. Measuring brand awareness is another key part in relating it to consumer buying behaviors. Three ways to measure brand awareness are spontaneous brand recall, top of mind recall, and aided recall. The ways that measure brand awareness are key in successfully marketing your product. Persuasion can be very complex to define and/or understand. Essentially by writing this paper, I am attempting to persuade my professor that I understand persuasion and how it relates to human communication. People use persuasion every day whether they realize it or not. It can be negative and attempt to manipulate or deceive. It can also be positive and come in the form of professional persuaders like clergy or motivational speakers. In this essay, I will attempt to persuade my readers of the direct and undeniable connection between human communication and persuasion. Let s first explore the topic of human communication. There are three essential parts that make up the human communication model, the sender, the message and the receiver. All three elements are affected by the surroundings where the communication is taking place. Outside elements or noise can affect the way the sender communicates and how the receiver interprets the message. To understand this process let s explore the ecological model of communication. It asserts that communication occurs in the intersection of four fundamental constructs: communication between people (creators and consumers) is mediated by messages which are created using language within media; consumed from media and interpreted using language. (Foulger, 2004) The sender delivers the

Another type had a history of poor social sexual functioning and is regarded as primitive and immature in terms of social sexual skills. The last type they found in their study had offenses involving cruel and vicious assaults on children and the act of molestation is regarded as more aggressive then sexual. As a result, network information mining has become a core subject and there is a growing need for a tool to help people gather online information, which is called web crawlers. Traditional web crawlers have limitations in mining information from the Deep Web that is hidden, which means the websites could be accessed when users login, forms are submitted. However, these shortcomings can be solved by deep web crawlers. This paper will initially explain the innovation of Deep Web crawlers, then states applications and evaluates of this innovation. Personality inventories and patient interviews have in fact indicated that people who abuse or depend on drugs tend to be more dependent, antisocial, impulsive, novelty seeking, and depressive than other people (Coffey et al., 2003; Cox et al., 2001; Finn et al., 2000). These findings are correlational, however, and do not clarify whether such personality traits lead to drug use or whether drug use causes people to be dependent, impulsive, and the like. In an effort to determine causation, one study measured the personality traits of a large group of nonalcoholic young men and then kept track of each man s development (Jones, 1971, 1968). Years later, the traits of the men who developed alcohol problems in middle age were compared with the traits of those who did not. The men who developed alcohol problems had been more impulsive as teenagers and continued to be so in middle age, a finding suggesting that impulsive men are indeed more prone to develop alcohol problems. Similarly, in one laboratory investigation, impulsive rats those that generally had trouble delaying their rewards were found to drink more alcohol when offered it than other rats (Poulos et al., 1995). A major weakness of this line of argument is the wide range of personality traits that have been tied to substance abuse

When Captain Cook landed in Australia, he declared it as Terra Nullius, and this alone gives a significant insight as to the mentality of the British and their willingness to acknowledge the Aboriginal people and the importance that the land played in their daily lives. As the invaders brought with them their laws, ideals, diseases, livestock and people, the need for land increased and settlers began to venture outwards from the main settlements, the frontier broadened and the Aboriginal population began to shrink. Before long, the Europeans became annoyed with the Aborigines and violence was inevitable. Other groups were forced into hiding while others stayed in camps. Since they were force off their land, they could no longer hunt or gather food for survival. Comparing the Narrative and Formal Devices of ChungKing Express and A Bout de Souffle Wong Kar Wai s movie ChungKing Express bears many similarities to Godard s A Bout de Souffle . To start with, Wai employs a number of cinematic techniques, obviously derived from the French New Wave, such as for example the jump cut which is evidently taken from Godard s film. His use of the Godard ian jump cut seamlessly blends temporally exclusive scenes together, making the passage of time unnoticeable. The primary function of the traditional Hong Kong film industry was to churn out movies aimed at the general public and make sure that they bring in a profit. This is much like the French film industry was before the emergence of the French New Wave. However Wai s ChungKing Expresswas clearly not aimed at the masses, but rather only at the people who have developed a real understanding and appreciation for the art of film. Godard s A Bout de Souffle was also a film which was made to rebel against the old style of French cinema and break the conventions of the film industry. In this way, both of the film directors have something in common with each other. Much of Wai s work has included themes of time passing and how every human emotion, every material object or specifically tinned food expires. This reoccurring matter isn t simply an accident but it carries a very significant political message. At the time that Wai made ChungKing Express , Hong Kong was pending to be handed over from the British democratic powers, to the Chinese communist government. This period was very turbulent for the Hong Kong people as they were in anticipation of a great change, but they didn t know whether it would be negative or positive.

  • 39. Ophelia As A Feminist Role In Hamlet William Shakespeare s Hamlet can be read as a feminist play given Ophelia s experiences within the Danish society. Through Ophelia s interactions with the men of the play, the audience can see that the male dominated society brings inequality, distrust, and destruction. As Ophelia interacts with her brother, her father, and Hamlet , she is completely unable to assert her own independence, and her lack of personal autonomy eventually drives her to madness. These three men all deny Ophelia s individuality and desire for self control because they are accustomed to their male dominated world. However, once Ophelia is driven to madness, she is regarded as an individual and finally has political and social power. Shakespeare s Hamlet is a feminist play located within a misogynistic culture that Ophelia struggles to escape. Ophelia s interactions with the male characters of the play reveal her limited agency. As Ophelia tells her brother about her relationship with Hamlet, Laertes responds, For Hamlet, and the trifling of his favor, hold it a fashion and a toy in blood, a violet in the youth of primy nature, forward, not permanent, sweet, not lasting, the perfume and suppliance of a minute, no more (1.3.5 10). By instructing Ophelia on how to behave in her relationship with Hamlet, Laertes implies that he does not trust Ophelia s judgement and she needs guidance with her personal affairs. Furthermore, Laertes continues to micromanage Ophelia and Hamlet s relationship as he warns her to fear Hamlet s actions. Laertes tells Ophelia, Be wary then; best safety lies in fear (1.3.42). Laertes s repeated attempts to assert his control over his sister exposes his belief that Ophelia cannot and should not be trusted with complete power over her life. Although it can be assumed that Ophelia does not appreciate this lack of control, societal expectations have been inculcated into her everyday actions, and she is deeply aware of her social roles. As a result of this awareness, she promises Laertes that she will follow his advice: I shall the effect of this good lesson keep as watchman to my heart (1.3.44 45). In order to maintain peace within her society, Ophelia is forced to conform to societal expectations. However, as

Specific characteristics come to mind when one envisions are hero, such as extraordinary strength and great courage. Heroes most commonly receive recognition for notable talents and remembered for their astonishing deeds and accomplishments. For example, Superman possesses superhuman strength, speed, and the ability to fly, qualities most frequently associated with heroes. However, not all heroes fit this model. Just a small hobbit from The Shire, Bilbo Bagginsdoes not possess any great strengths or abilities, and many would view Bilbo as the antithesis to Superman. In J.R.R Tolkiens, The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins portrays an unlikely hero due to his small size and stout appearance, his cowardly personality, and his tendency to appear as an onus to the group. However, through his actions of bravery, Bilbo demonstrates that anyone, no matter what size or shape, can perform heroic deeds. The idea of a submersible ship has been around since the Revolution, although its success was minimal at best. The simplified definition of the Fair Use Doctrine is to give the public the right to make reasonable uses of the copyrighted material, while protecting the interests of the copyright owners (Samuelson, 1995). The challenge is how the legal system measures fair use and particularly in this case, transformative use. Judges consider four factors for measuring fair use. The first is the purpose of character of the use. Second is the nature of the copyrighted work. The third is the amount and substantiality of the portion taken. Finally, the fourth is the effect of the use upon the potential market (Stanford, 2015). When HathiTrust a Google company, began digitalizing thousands of books from the public library s and creating metadata, the copyrighted materials were being duplicated by a for profit company. Although the company who owns HathiTrust is a for profit company, their intended use and transformation of the material was not with the intent of profit. Yet one might have a hard time believing Google would fund such an endeavor if they did not see an opportunity to make money off the digitalization of the works. From a legal standpoint, a challenge is how the judges measure the portion taken and the effect of the use upon the potential market, particularly when this is the first time of mass digitalization. The Actors Guild lost the case because the courts believed the transformative factor of digitalizing the library books gave the public new
