This document outlines several strategies for helping English language learner (ELL) students understand grammar, including GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design), sentence patterning, sentence frames, expert groups/sentence detectives, word of the day in multiple languages, mimic writing, and sensory field trips. GLAD uses techniques like inquiry charts, big books, chants, and response journals. Sentence patterning teaches parts of speech to a tune. Sentence frames provide structures for writing summaries. Expert groups allow students to become experts on aspects of lessons and help peers. Word of the day introduces vocabulary in multiple languages. Mimic writing has students emulate author styles. Sensory field trips classify the five senses in different locations.

Allow students to choose between prompts for quick writes
Students generate writing for 5 minutes, then count words, and
graph their progress (fast visual for student and teacher)
This can be extended later to any focus in writing (i.e. have
students count mind-movie sentences or vivid verbs or helping
verbs)
It is simple; students with a reluctance for writing will gladly
play this basic “game.”
