◦Robert Robinson in 1758,
◦22 years old
◦was the first hymn in A Collection of
Hymns for the use of the Church of
Christ, Meeting in Angel-Alley,
Whitechappel . . . (1759).

5. Robert Robinson’s fate
◦Robert was born on Sept. 27, 1735, to Mary Wilkin
and Michael Robinson
◦A young boy is forced to grow up without a loving
father. Dad passed away eight years old.
◦Maternal grandfather, Robert Wilkin, a wealthy
man, disinherited his grandson and provided an
inheritance for him of only ten shillings and
sixpence.

◦ Hardship being the breadwinner for his widowed mother and himself.
◦ His formal education was limited. However, his knowledge was
and extensive. There was an adult-like quality deeply ingrained in him,
and it allowed him to accept the responsibilities of adulthood, even as a
teenager.
◦ Mr. Whitfield: “Oh, my hearers! the wrath to come! the wrath to
come!” He was wondrously converted and became a minister of the
gospel; first, in a Baptist church, then in a Methodist church, and
in other denominations.
◦ In one location his congregation grew to 1,000 in attendance.

Condition: unstable and unhappy. His
beliefs and training seemed of little importance

the Lord helped us.”

◦ biblical allusions appears in stanza two: “Here I raise mine
Ebenezer/ hither by thy help I’m come.” The Hymnal Revision
Committee for the 1989 United Methodist Hymnal received
requests to alter this stanza by omitting the term “Ebenezer,”
which means “Stone of Help,” a reference to
◦ 1 Samuel 7:12: “Then Samuel took a stone and set it up
between Mizpah and Jeshanah, and named it Ebenezer; for
he said, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us.’” But not finding a
suitable substitute, the Committee chose to maintain the
original language.

18. Battle between the Philistine & Israel
◦ In 1 Samuel 2:24, we are told, “[n]ay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: ye
make the Lord’s people to transgress.” The elders of Israel fetched the Ark of the
Covenant within the camp, it would provide them with the protection of the Lord in
battle.
◦ After great defeat, the Ark of the Covenant was taken by the Philistines from Ebenezer
to Ashdod.
◦ Priests Hophni and Phinehas were slain. Eli died (1 Samuel 2:34, Prophecy fulfilled.
◦ The Philistines remembered, “these are the gods that smote the Egyptians with all the
plagues in the wilderness” (1 Samuel 4:8).
◦ Nevertheless, the Philistines fought, and Israel suffered
great loss.

In 1 Samuel 7:3, Samuel addressed all of Israel and advised them,
“if ye do return unto the Lord with all your hearts, then put away
strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your
hearts unto the Lord, and serve him only: and he will deliver you
out of the hand of the Philistines.”
