GOD’S CALL
1 The word of the LORD came to
son of Amittai
• Hebrew prophet in Northern Israel:
• Bold; Knew his Bible; Always trying to get his
people (Jews) to repent and turn back to God
• Jonah’s name means dove; messenger of peace;
• He would probably have been one of the leaders
in the ‘school of prophets’ when Elisha was
nearing the end of his ministry”
1 The word of the LORD came to
son of
• Jonah and his father, Amittai (my truth) lived in
(a few miles north of Nazareth where the tomb
of Jonah stood until destroyed by ISIS in 2014)
• The Pharisees said
” (John 7:52). They lied. Jonah was a Galilean.
1 The to Jonah
son of Amittai
2 “Go to the great city of
and preach against it, because its
wickedness has come up before Me.”
Will Durant
2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and
, because its wickedness has come up before Me.”
3a But from the LORD and
headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa,
where he found a ship bound for that port…
1.FEAR? Some. Jonah knew of the sadistic cruelty of the hated Assyrians.
He was used to preaching boldly against wickedness and evil people. He
may have been afraid. He knew his message would be unwelcome. But that
was nothing new to Jonah. And we see him boldly go into the city later.
2.PREJUDICE? Some. One commentary says, “No true Israelite could
imagine such a thing as preaching to Gentiles, especially the enemy. But God
had from the beginning intended for Israel to be a light to all nations, a
function which they had failed to honor.”
3.THE REASON IS GIVEN BY JONAH HIMSELF (v 4:3)
He feared that Nineveh might repent and that God, in His grace, would
spare them and not destroy their city.
Seems to
be a LOT
of that
goin’
around.
3a But Jonah ran away from the LORD and
. He went down to ,
where he found a ship bound for that port…
3b After paying the fare, he went aboard and
sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.
3b After paying the fare, he went aboard and
to flee from the LORD.

sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.
1.RICH: 1 Kings 10:9 "Beaten silver is brought from Tarshish…”
2.RESOURCEFUL: 1 Kings 10:22: King Solomon had "a fleet of ships of
Tarshish" that every three years used to “come bringing gold,
silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks to him."
3.POWERFUL: Psalm 72 "May the kings of Tarshish …
render Him (the Messiah) tribute…"
4.FAR AWAY: Isaiah 60:9 "… the ships of Tarshish first,
to bring your children from afar,"
5.CAPITALISTIC: Ezekiel says. "Tarshish did business with you because of your
great wealth of every kind; silver, iron, tin, and lead they exchanged for your
wares." And 27:25 "The ships of Tarshish traveled for you with your
merchandise. So you were filled and heavily laden in the heart of the seas."
3b he and
sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.
•EXPENSIVE! It cost him Money,
his career, his country, and
his relationship with God.
4 Then ,
and such a violent storm arose that the ship
threatened to break up.
4 Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and

5b And to lighten the
ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay
down and fell into a deep sleep.
6 The captain went to him and said,

take notice of us so that we will not perish.”
6 The captain went to him and said, “How can you
sleep? Maybe he will
take notice of us so that we will not perish.”
7 Then the sailors said to each other,

8 “Tell us, who is responsible for
making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you
do? Where do you come from? What is your country?
From what people are you?”

they asked him, “ to
make the sea calm down for us?”
12 “ ,” he
replied, “and it will become calm.
that this great storm has come upon you.”
1.Jonah knew this would calm the sea (As a prophet, he was aware of God’s intent)
2.Jonah was willing to die to save the sailors
3.Was this an act of heroism or the final act of a desperate and disobedient failure?
13 Instead, .

17 Now to
swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the
belly of the fish .
One possibility is the WHALE SHARK,
(largest fish in the ocean)
• Two marine scientists from Sea World in San Diego hypothesize
that it was a GREAT WHITE SHARK
• Common in the Mediterranean Sea and can reach up to 30’
• One picture shows a GWS with a whole 6’ blue shark inside it.
• "in the cold water, with the metabolism of a shark, a man's body
could last three days
without deterioration"
• Creations and Young Earth Scientists believe that the so-called
“prehistoric” MEGALADON SHARK or CARCHARIUS SHARK
may have still been around a few thousand years ago.
Maybe God
prepared a fish
like no other that
has ever lived
“IF HE IS THE ALL-POWERFUL
CREATOR GOD, PREPARING A
FISH AND TIMING THE WHOLE
EVENT WAS NOT A GREAT
DRAIN ON HIS POWER OR
ABILITY.”
-ANSWERS IN GENESIS
1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the
LORD his God.
2 He said: “ I called to the
LORD, and he answered me…”
•Why is it our prayer time gets better when
we are in distress?
•The Lord always answers (yes, no, later).
•Not always the way you want him to.
2b “… I
called for help, and you listened to my cry.”

8 “ cling to worthless idols turn away
from God’s love for them.
•Referring to the sailors who each prayed to his own gods
•He didn’t know that they turned to God after Jonah left
•Also referred to the idolatrous Ninevites that he has been
called to go preach against
•He says they have turned away from God’s love for them
9 But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to
You. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say,
‘Salvation comes from the LORD.’”
JONAH SAYS HE WILL DO 4 THINGS
IF GOD RESTORES HIM
10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it
vomited Jonah onto dry land.
• WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM THIS CHAPTER?
• GOD IS A GOD OF SECOND CHANCES
1.John Mark deserted Paul but later became an invaluable part of his team
2.Samson was blinded due to pride but later defeated an entire city
3.David committed adultery and murder and was later called the friend of God
4.The list is endless – all trophies of the grace of God
•  JONAH HAD TO REPENT BEFORE HE COULD TELL OTHERS TO REPENT (APPLY)
1. MATTHEW 7:3-5 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your
own eye?How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your
own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your
brother’s eye.”
•  GOD RELENTLESSLY PURSUES THOSE HE LOVES AND HAS CALLED
1. John 6:44 “No one can come to Me, unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day”
2. Titus 3:5 “He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the
washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit”
3. Hebrews 12:2, “Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith”
•  GOD DISCIPLINES THOSE HE LOVES AND HAS CALLED
1. REV. 3:19 “Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent”
2. Heb. 12:6 “because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.“
•  SALVATION COMES FROM CHRIST ALONE
• (John 14:6) “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”
• (Acts 4:12) “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by
which we must be saved.”
• (John 3:36) “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of
God abides on him.”
•  GOD IS SOVEREIGN OVER ALL CREATION
• Psalms 135:6, “Whatever the LORD pleases, He does, In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps”
• Psalm 115:3, “But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases”
• Isaiah 46:`0, “Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, 'My
purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure'”

1b “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim
to it the message I give you.”
3 Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went
to . Now Nineveh was a very large
city; it took three days to go through it.
4 Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the
city, , “ and
Nineveh will be overthrown.”
5 The Ninevites believed God. A fast was
proclaimed, and all of them, from the
greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.
6 When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he
rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered
himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust.
7 This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh:
“ Do not
let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste
anything; do not let them eat or drink.

• Remember, this is not Jonah speaking but the evil king.
• He tells them to call on GOD, not their gods.
• Notice the urgency in his command to everyone.

10 When God saw what they did and how they turned
from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring
on them the destruction he had threatened.
1 “But to Jonah this seemed very wrong,
and ”
2 “He prayed to the LORD, “Isn’t this what I said, LORD, when
I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by
fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and
compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love,
a God who relents from sending calamity.”
3 “Now, LORD, , for it is
than to live.”
4 “But the LORD replied,
• “You want to see anger?
I’ll show you anger!”
• “I should have chosen
someone else who
would have enjoyed
this endeavor!”
• “I’m sorry I ever called you”
• “Why can’t you be more like
Elijah”
5 “Jonah had gone out and sat down at a place east of the
city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and
waited to see what would happen to the city.”
6 “Then the a leafy plant and made it
grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his
discomfort, and about the plant.”
7 “But at dawn the next day ,
which chewed the plant so that it withered.”
• GOD appointed this worm to a task
• Generally, worms head for the leaves. This one chewed
through the main part of the plant and caused it to die
• NOTICE: It was God that removed the blessing for His
purpose, NOT Satan
8 “When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east
wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he
grew faint. He wanted to die, and said…“Itwouldbe
betterformetodiethantolive.”
9 “But God said to Jonah…
“Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”
“It is,” he said. “And I’m so angry I wish I were dead.”
10-11 “But the LORD said…
“You have been concerned about this plant, though you
did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and
died overnight. And should I not have concern for the
great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a
hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell
their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”
• To show that God has a calling for each and every
one of His children
• To show the sovereign power of God over nature
(sea, wind, fish, plant, worm, etc.)
• To show that “Salvation is only from the Lord”
• To show that God extends salvation to all who
repent and turn to Him (Jew or Gentile)
• To show Israel how to respond to God’s coming
judgment and how to repent
• To show God’s patience with His erring children
• To show the mercy and compassion
of God for a lost and dying world
• To challenge us to share God’s
compassion with the world
