The Signs of Easter - May 26, 2019 The 6th Sunday of EasterRedeemerWV
Signs. Signs. Everywhere are signs...
But are there really? Sunday we'll be hearing again the story of the conversion of Lydia told in Acts 16. We see a heart opened by God that hears the Word and receives the gifts from Word and Baptism to create faith. Then we see evidence of that faith in good works.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

SERVICE OF WORSHIP
July 8, 2012
6th of Pentecost
“Home and Away”
The Rev. Dr. David Lee, Pastor
Jaimie Shires, DCE
Gibson Dixon, Director of Music
Sue Heckler, Church Secretary
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people,
in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into
his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you
had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” (1 Peter 2: 9-10)
2. HIGHLANDS UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
A Celebration of Worship
July 8, 2012 -- 6th of Pentecost
“ENTER WITH REVERENCE TO WORSHIP GOD”
TIME OF PREPARATION Mission Yearbook – p.
(Take this opportunity to pause for a moment and pray for God’s presence among us today, our worship leaders,
those who worship with you and for yourself.)
WELCOME AND GATHERING
We gather in this place to worship.
It's a good place to be.
Jesus tells us not to get too comfortable.
Are we going somewhere?
PRELUDE AND BRINGING THE LIGHT
*THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Let us praise God here in this place of worship, in awe over God’s steadfast love.
Your name, O God, like your praise, reaches to the ends of the earth...
Let the whole world rejoice because of your righteous judgments.
Let us pass on the message of God’s greatness wherever we go
So that generation to generation will know that this is our God who will guide us forever.
Come and worship God, our strength and salvation.
*GATHERING PRAYER AND THE LORD'S PRAYER (responsive)
God of faith and truth:
You create and we stand in awe,
You nurture and we are fed,
You offer us grace,
and we experience the assurance that we are never alone.
Help us always to be people of faithful courage, Eager to worship and serve you
In all times and places. Here us now as we pray the prayer Christ
Taught us, "Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy
kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen."
*HYMN OF PRAISE NO. 477 "Ye Servants of God, Your Master Proclaim"
Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim, And publish abroad His wonderful Name;
The Name all victorious of Jesus extol, His kingdom is glorious and rules over all.
God ruleth on high, almighty to save, And still He is nigh, His presence we have;
The great congregation His triumph shall sing, Ascribing salvation to Jesus, our King.
*If comfortable, please stand
3. “Salvation to God, who sits on the throne!” Let all cry aloud and honor the Son;
The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim, Fall down on their faces
and worship the Lamb.
Then let us adore and give Him His right, All glory and power, all wisdom and might;
All honor and blessing with angels above, And thanks never ceasing and infinite love.
"SEEK FORGIVENESS AND FELLOWSHIP"
*CONFESSION AND PARDON
We may boast of all our deeds and achievements, but inside, we know our brokenness,
our failures, our weaknesses. Yet God has promised to heal us, anointing us with the oil
of grace. Let us confess our lives, as we pray together saying,
You come, Crafter of Wonder, longing to be a part of our lives, yet we often find it
difficult to welcome you. You would be our lifelong companion, but we shake you
off, leaving you in the dust as we race after temptation. You offer to be our guide in
this journey we call life, but we brag that we can make our own way. Your love
withstands the force of our stubbornness, Composer of Grace, even as your
forgiveness breaks the power of our fears. As we have heard your words of mercy
echo in our hearts, as we have felt your grace make us whole, as we have seen you
in those who welcome us as sisters and brothers, may we go forth to tell the good
news of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
“Lord, Have Mercy Upon Us,
Christ Have Mercy Upon Us,
Lord Have Mercy Upon us.”
*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
God's love reaches to the ends of creation, and mends our broken hearts. God's hope
echoes through the universe, and sings in our souls. God's grace tenderly,
gently, completely makes us new people.
We have heard the good news spoken to us; we have seen the good news
modeled for us; we will be the good news for others. Thanks be to God, we
are forgiven! Amen.
*THE GLORIA PATRI
“Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.”
“THE PROCLAMATION OF GOD’S WORD”
OLD TESTAMENT LESSON

through the night, Lead me on to the light; Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.
When my way grows drear, Precious Lord, linger near; When my life is almost gone, Hear my cry, hear my call,
Hold my hand lest I fall; Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.

The fellowship of kindred minds Is like to that above.
2. Before our *Father's throne We pour our ardent prayers;
Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, Our comforts and our cares.
3. We share our mutual woes, Our mutual burdens bear,
And often for each other flows The sympathizing tear.
4. From sorrow, toil, and pain, And sin we shall be free;
And perfect love and friendship reign Through all eternity.
.
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (The Apostles’ Creed (Ecumenical) in Unison)
”I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in
Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of
the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; He ascended into
heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the
living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic (universal) church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and
the life everlasting. Amen.”
5. BEING THE CHURCH IN MISSION, PRAYER AND GIVING
Discipleship and Moment for Mission
As We Come to Prayer
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
Have mercy on us, O God, according to your loving kindness; in your great compassion,
hear our prayers. We pray for the whole church, all leaders and ministers, and all the holy
people of God. Wash us through and through,
And cleanse us from our sin.
We pray for our nation, for all the nations of the earth, and for all who govern and judge.
Purge us from our sin,
And we shall be pure.
We pray for those who hunger, those who thirst, those who cry out for justice, those who
live under the threat of terror, and those without a place to lay their head.
Make them hear of joy and gladness,
that those who are broken may rejoice.
We pray for those who are ill, those in pain, those under stress, and those who are
lonely. Give them the joy of your saving help,
and sustain them with your bountiful Spirit.
Even in fearful times we pray for those who seek to deepen their faith, and we pray that
we all might be given the grace and strength to repent and grow closer to you, O God.
Create in us clean hearts, O God,
and renew a right spirit within us.
We pray for those who have are sad today, cast them not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from them.
We especially pray for the sick, those serving in conflicts around the world, for our nation
in its struggle to find itself anew.
Give them your comfort, Lord.
Lord, you call and challenge us to be bold in sharing the faith. You expect us to go and
tell, to live and serve, to be the church.
Make us bold in the going, Lord, and faithful in the serving.
You give us opportunity, challenge and responsibility;
unite us in purpose to be the church. Amen.
GIVING OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS
OFFERTORY

We will go, believing.

Believe that God chooses ordinary people to do extraordinary things.
We will go, believing.

*HYMN OF PARTING NO. 441 “I Love Thy Kingdom, Lord”
I love Thy kingdom, Lord, The house of Thine abode,
The church our blessed Redeemer saved
With His own precious blood.
I love Thy church, O God. Her walls before Thee stand,
Dear as the apple of Thine eye,
And graven on Thy hand.
For her my tears shall fall For her my prayers ascend,
To her my cares and toils be given
Till toils and cares shall end.
Beyond my highest joy I prize her heavenly ways,
Her sweet communion, solemn vows,
Her hymns of love and praise.
Sure as Thy truth shall last, To Zion shall be given
The brightest glories earth can yield
And brighter bliss of Heaven.
*BENEDICTION

Filling all our lives with love and joy and peace.
May the God of justice speed us on our way,
