Improving Workplace Safety Performance in Malaysian SMEs: The Role of Safety ...AJHSSR Journal
ABSTRACT: In the Malaysian context, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) experience a significant
burden of workplace accidents. A consensus among scholars attributes a substantial portion of these incidents to
human factors, particularly unsafe behaviors. This study, conducted in Malaysia's northern region, specifically
targeted Safety and Health/Human Resource professionals within the manufacturing sector of SMEs. We
gathered a robust dataset comprising 107 responses through a meticulously designed self-administered
questionnaire. Employing advanced partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) techniques
with SmartPLS 3.2.9, we rigorously analyzed the data to scrutinize the intricate relationship between safety
behavior and safety performance. The research findings unequivocally underscore the palpable and
consequential impact of safety behavior variables, namely safety compliance and safety participation, on
improving safety performance indicators such as accidents, injuries, and property damages. These results
strongly validate research hypotheses. Consequently, this study highlights the pivotal significance of cultivating
safety behavior among employees, particularly in resource-constrained SME settings, as an essential step toward
enhancing workplace safety performance.

3. 1.) WEEK 1 ACTIVITY 1.2: APART BUT NEVER ALONE
After reading the article, I realized how important communication is for us during this pandemic. Because with this communication, it helps us to
be alert and aware of what is happening in our surroundings and if there are an emergency that is needed to be announced immediately. It also
helps us to connect with other people especially in our family and friends that is away from us to ask what they are doing and to advise them in
our own knowledge on what should they do. For example, we will experience the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ). Just like when we
experienced ECQ, there were guidelines and protocols regarding leaving the house or schedule of buying essentials that is prepared by the
mayor. This information is disseminated through barangay captains and social media. These kinds of communication are badly needed in order to
spread the information among the citizens of the place. Imagine, if there is no communication how we can know if there is an announcement in
our perspective places.
As a student, communication is very important and that’s why I’m using my social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Messenger and others
which is a big help to check my family members and friends. Using these applications is one of the best and easiest way to communicate with
them. With this type of communication, it can make our family and friends' bond stronger. On the other hand, I also play mobile games to play with
my friends even though we haven’t seen each other for a long time but we can share our experience it.
All of us will experience the new normal that is why we should adjust from what we are usually doing especially for those who go to work and us
students who go to school every day for our safety. That’s why we should use our gadgets properly specially to search for important news during
the pandemic.
4. 2.) WEEK 1 REFLECTION
1. Communication is the directed and purposeful exchange of information and messages between people or groups of people by through verbal
or nonverbal means. This communication involves a sender, receiver, feedback, noise and channel.
Sender – The one who delivers message.
Receiver – The one who receives the message.
Message – a short communication that is sent to the receiver.
Channel – serves as the passageway of the message.
2. Communication is a process because it undergoes a steps and order to successfully communicate with others.
3. The positive influence of media and information to communication are mode of entertainment and self-expression, could be a source of
inspiration, helps develop social skills and many more. Mode of entertainment and self-expression because in using social media platforms
like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, helps each one of us to interact to others where we can show our expression and by that, it can boost
our confidence and self-esteem. Could be a source of inspiration because it is an online documentaries, movies, and inspirational story that
teens can watch to be more inspired. Help develop social skills because there are some people who cannot interact easily to others that is
what we called introvert. Through communication they can meet new friends that they can talk to.
4. The negative influence of media and information to communication are media becomes a source of misinformation and fake news. Publishers
also posts whatever they want and unmindful of the consequences of their posts Social media made everyone feel that they can also post
whatever comes on their mind. It can also pose medical, social and psychological issues because, whatever that is posted on media may
cause addictions and sometimes it can destroy interpersonal relationships.
5. 3.) WEEK 2 REFLECTION
As a student, media information and literacy help me to think critically. It has also the ability to identify different types of media and the
message that they are sending. When we talk about media, it encompasses print media, such as newspapers, magazines, posters and more.
This media literacy can also help us to become closer to God, our family and nation by using media properly like we can search some
information about the bible we can also read bibles using media even we don’t have our bible in our house but still we can still read and use it
as alternative from bible. This can also help to get closer in out family because even they are in work and even though we are not living
together but still with the use of media we can communicate that can make me and my family connected. Last is the nation, we can share our
experience on what is happening to our country that’s why it makes others to be aware on what is happening to our country and it makes them
more prepared and have a knowledge on how to prevent the bad happenings or this pandemic brought to us. This is how media and
information literacy helps us in different ways.
6. 4.) WEEK 4 SKETCH NOTING
1. It makes the students develop critical thinking
skills that can be used in schoolwork.
2. Media can also motivate the students to achieve
and strive for their goals in life.
3.Media is also used in communicating and it makes
people to have more friends.
1.Spending of several hours in browsing through
social media can also affect your mood that can
leads to have a poor mental health and also the
symptoms of anxiety and depression.
2. Cyberbullying can be done by using some of your
pictures that others can make fun of it and it also
affects the personality of the person who is being
bullied.
3.Media also makes a person increased the
incidents of anxiety and depression, spending too
much time on social media can lead to poor sleep
3 POSITIVE EFFECTS AND NEGATIVE
EFFECTS OF MEDIA IN THE SOCIETY
7. 5.) WEEK 5 ACTIVITY 3
Guide Questions:
1. What will you do to make your report not boring?
2. Would you exaggerate some elements in your report to make it interesting? Why?
ANSWER:
1. I can catch the attention of my audience by sharing some story that is related to my topic
before I start the presentation. Starting with a good story can make also make the speaker find
creative ways to communicate or explain the purpose of the presentation. The speaker should
also use visuals to his/her presentation to make the audience more focus on what is the topic
all about.
2. I can make the report more interesting by focusing on the topic that you are going discuss.
Also, give the audience a little or short idea on what will be the flow of your presentation. Make
your voice loud and clear so that the audience can understand it well.
11. 8.) WEEK 1 ACTIVITY 1.1
IMPORTANCE OF BEING MEDIA LITERATE
Since technology is very useful nowadays, every user should learn first the rules and regulations in using the media to avoid some harassments
and violations. Being media literate makes everyone who uses the media more effective. They will also know on how is the proper use of media like
they will understand what should they avoid and what should they do when using media.
Example: PHISING
HOW TO PREVENT?
EXAMPLES:
Wilfred starts to download security software that can protect himself to be affected by scammers. He also protects his account by using multi
factor authentication so that his account will asking for two credentials to login his account and for the scammers cannot access it easily. As he
uses the internet, he verifies first the site’s security because it can also a factor of being hacked and they can get your information as well.
Wilfred saw a message sent to his email stating “You won 10,000,000₱ please register to claim” When he clicks the register button it asks for his
information like name, age, address and his card number. So that he decided to stop because he knows that he shouldn’t give his information to
the media because he also knows that it may harm or something bad may happen if he continues.
12. CONCLUSION:
• In all, we as a user of media like social media, we should first know how to be a media literate person. A media literate person knows how to
evaluate, analyze and they can easily recognize if the things that they are doing in media is wrong already. Being a media literate person is a
very big help or you may contribute a lot in your community because, you can share those important things like sharing the news with reliable
sources unlike the others who keep on spreading fake news and misinformation. Since we also know that the media and technology is very
useful in our country because it is where other people are depending. Like they keep on searching some information especially about the virus
that is continuously spreading in the world. Because with this media, it helps us to give and information easily and it is very easy to access by
anyone. That’s why we should think first about the information that we are getting from different types of media or maybe ask someone who
has a knowledge about it before spreading to your family, friends and some relatives. So, try your best on how you can contribute in the
community and so that the people around you will easily trust your works and share it to others who is also needed your information. In this
situation, you should apply also the “Think before you click” or knowing first the result if it is positive or negative effect. Just always remember
that the more media literate person we have, the more information is that can help each and everyone of us.
(CONTINUATION OF #8)
13. People in Media
This is other form of People Media which uses media like text media, visual media, multimedia, etc. and used in disseminating information and imparting
knowledge. The following are also considered as people in media:
Print journalists
Photo journalists
Broadcast journalists
Multimedia Journalist
People as Media
This is also a form of People Media. They are the individual or the people that serves as the channels of information dissemination. They are also the one
who creates the news in forms of essay, and literature to create artifacts. But with the use of technology and social media, people are now able to produce
artifacts by evaluating, analyze and give feedback to a specific information that can be seen in media. The following are also considered as people as media
• Opinion Leaders

• Social Journalists
SIMILARITIES:
They are both express in media and they are also in media.
9.) WEEK 1 ACTIVITY 1.2
15. 11.) WEEK 6 ACTIVITY 6.1
Based on the test that I answered, it is a measure of a person's reasoning ability. In short, it is a test on how can someone
use the information and logic to answer questions or make predictions. The users can access it by searching some online IQ test
websites then after, you can start answering the questions by choosing the correct answer from the choices. For me, it can be
improved in a way that after clicking the answers then it will be automatically proceeding to the next questions because it may
help the user in answering and less time consuming for those will access this website.
16. 12.) WEEK 7 ACTIVITY 7.2
Gadgets (Phone, Laptop etc.)
- This gadget helps me a lot in my daily life because with this device it allows me to communicate with my friends and my family. It is also the
device that I was using when I’m attending my online class. Without this, my life will be different and will be more difficult.
Applications (Google, Microsoft Word, etc.)
- This application is also helping me a lot in my daily lives because I use it when I have something to research and make the things clearer.
Sometimes when I didn’t know the meaning or the word itself, I try to search for it by this application. While the Microsoft Word helps me by
using its paragraph formatting and some other features to construct my sentences in a proper way.
