Equal Opportunities Policy
The nursery will ensure that no child is excluded or disadvantaged because of ethnicity, religion,
culture, family background, disability, gender, home language, special educational needs,
rurality or ability. The nursery will ensure that all children feel safe, included and valued.
The nursery will:
 Establish feeling of respect and trust and will all children and their parents and carers.
 Treat each child as an individual and provide equality of opportunity within the nursery
which will ensure that the individual needs are met appropriately.
 Encourage self-confidence and provide a positive approach to learning in all children.
 Talk with parents and carers about the child’s ethnic, religious and cultural heritage and
experiences at home.
 Using this information when planning and carrying out activities within the nursery.
 Ensuring familiar experiences are used as starting points for learning.
 We will consider the issues of equality when planning, setting up and altering rooms,
outdoor areas, displays and equipment within the nursery.
 Ensure children are given support to participate in activities, experiences, visits and
discussions.
 Ensure that all children are listened to carefully and with respect.
 Carefully consider the need for equality of opportunity when planning activities and
experience and staff will modify activities or provide additional equipment or materials to
ensure that children’s needs are met.
Staff will create an environment that encourages a positive attitude to learning by:
 Keeping the nursery free from any discriminatory practice or stereotypical images.
 Valuing the local community and environment as sources of learning opportunities.
 Use displays, resources and equipment that reflect the community in which the children
live as well as in the wider world.
The Curriculum for Excellence includes features to encourage children to respect their own
cultural background and beliefs of those other people. These include:
 Activities relating to a wide range of religious, ethnic and cultural festivals.
 Visits to different places of worship and cultural centres.
 Telling stories, listening to music and looking at pictures and videos from a range of
cultures and religions.
 Role play activities that reflect a variety of cultures.
 Discussion with and between the children about similarities and differences in their
experiences and the reasons for those similarities and differences.

Stronsay Junior High School Nursery Policy Head Teacher: Andrew King Stronsay Junior High School, Stronsay, Orkney, KW17 2AE 01857 616 246 Equal Opportunities Policy The nursery will ensure that no child is excluded or disadvantaged because of ethnicity, religion, culture, family background, disability, gender, home language, special educational needs, rurality or ability. The nursery will ensure that all children feel safe, included and valued. The nursery will:  Establish feeling of respect and trust and will all children and their parents and carers.  Treat each child as an individual and provide equality of opportunity within the nursery which will ensure that the individual needs are met appropriately.  Encourage self-confidence and provide a positive approach to learning in all children.  Talk with parents and carers about the child’s ethnic, religious and cultural heritage and experiences at home.  Using this information when planning and carrying out activities within the nursery.  Ensuring familiar experiences are used as starting points for learning.  We will consider the issues of equality when planning, setting up and altering rooms, outdoor areas, displays and equipment within the nursery.  Ensure children are given support to participate in activities, experiences, visits and discussions.  Ensure that all children are listened to carefully and with respect.  Carefully consider the need for equality of opportunity when planning activities and experience and staff will modify activities or provide additional equipment or materials to ensure that children’s needs are met. Staff will create an environment that encourages a positive attitude to learning by:  Keeping the nursery free from any discriminatory practice or stereotypical images.  Valuing the local community and environment as sources of learning opportunities.  Use displays, resources and equipment that reflect the community in which the children live as well as in the wider world. The Curriculum for Excellence includes features to encourage children to respect their own cultural background and beliefs of those other people. These include:  Activities relating to a wide range of religious, ethnic and cultural festivals.  Visits to different places of worship and cultural centres.  Telling stories, listening to music and looking at pictures and videos from a range of cultures and religions.  Role play activities that reflect a variety of cultures.  Discussion with and between the children about similarities and differences in their experiences and the reasons for those similarities and differences.
