This document describes an automatic on-line cleaning system called EQOBRUSH that cleans heat exchangers and condensers without shutting them down. It uses nylon brushes housed in baskets that are propelled through the pipes during brief reversals of water flow to remove scaling and fouling. This leads to energy savings of 10-40% by reducing scale buildup, lower maintenance costs by eliminating manual cleanings, increased capacity by ensuring optimal heat transfer, and reduced water consumption by allowing higher cycle concentrations. It compares favorably to ball-based cleaning systems by cleaning all pipes on each cycle and having lower investment and maintenance costs.
