This document compares epoxy asphalt to alternative pavement types for use on orthotropic steel bridge decks. Epoxy asphalt forms a thermoset polymer system that is more durable and resistant to cracking, rutting, and shoving compared to traditional thermoplastic asphalt types. It provides improved strength, stiffness, fatigue life, and adhesion properties. Case studies show epoxy asphalt pavements can last over 20 years with minimal maintenance, offsetting its higher material costs compared to alternatives like mastic asphalt that typically last only 5-8 years. Epoxy asphalt also allows for potential structural weight savings through lighter deck designs and faster construction speeds.
